Facebook dispute leads to teenager being shot dead in downtown Hua Hin

A dispute that started on Facebook resulted in a 16-year-old teenager being shot dead in Hua Hn on Thursday night. The incident, which also left another person seriously injured, unfolded on Nares Damri Road in the municipal area of Hua Hin.

The altercation began when a local teenager became embroiled in an argument on Facebook over derogatory remarks made about his sister. The online disagreement led to a face-to-face meeting intended to resolve the conflict. However, the situation took a deadly turn, culminating in gunfire. Continued …

54 of 77 provinces face hazardous smog levels

Fifty-four out of 77 provinces in Thailand were blanketed with hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, with 27 provinces, mostly in the north and the northeast, experiencing red (seriously harmful) levels of pollution.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported on Thursday that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, at 128.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Raw pork, pig blood blamed for Streptococcus suis outbreak, five deaths

An outbreak of Streptococcus suis has caused the deaths of five people in Thailand between January and March this year, the Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 9 warned on Thursday.

Medical officials blamed the outbreak on the consumption of raw pork and pig blood, which are used in local Thai dishes, such as Larb, Koi and Naem. This way of consumption has been trending on social media, and some netizens claimed to have consumed raw pork along with alcohol. Continued …

Thai EV sales surge by 603% amid government incentives

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sales in Thailand surged by 603% year-on-year to 73,568 units last year, with the upward trend expected to continue throughout this year, as per the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

This growth is expected to outstrip that of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which witnessed a 13.7% year-on-year sales decline to 238,570 units in 2023, capturing a 30.7% market share in the passenger car segment. National oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc. has greenlighted its 100% owned subsidiary Arun Plus Ltd. to establish two new companies to sell two brands of electric vehicles (EVs) – Zeekr and Xpeng – in Thailand.

PTT President and CEO Auttapol Rerkpiboon noted that Arun Plus has been approved to establish Ze Mobility Plus Ltd. as an authorised dealer of the Zeekr electric vehicles, while X Mobility (Thailand) Ltd. will be the authorised distributor of Xpeng EVs. Continued …
