Council of State Rejects Plan to Lower Electricity Bills

The Council of State, Thailand’s primary legal advisory body, has dismissed a proposal from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) aimed at renegotiating contracts with renewable power firms to reduce electricity bills. The north, northeast, eastern and central regions, including Bangkok, will experience a hot day and isolated thunderstorms today, the Thai Meteorological Department said this morning.

Cabinet Set to Reject Casino Entry Rule for Thai Nationals

Thai Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has indicated that a contentious proposal regulating casino entry for Thai citizens is unlikely to win cabinet approval. The policy, suggested by the Council of State (CoS), requires Thais to maintain a minimum of 50 million baht (approximately US$ 1.5 million) in fixed deposits for at least six months to gain entry to casino entertainment complexes.

Amid Climate Uncertainty, Floating Solar Builds Resilience

Southeast Asia is responsible for nearly a quarter of global energy demand growth through 2035, but it is currently heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels and hydropower. New 1st-class bus service from Bangkok airports to Hua Hin, Pattaya

State-run Transport Co. will launch a first-class bus service from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Hua Hin and Pattaya on March 8.

There will be two round trips daily between Don Mueang airport and Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a distance of 216 kilometers per trip. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. Continued …

Thailand Faces Surge in Influenza: 100,000 Cases, 9 Deaths

Thailand is grappling with a serious influenza outbreak, having witnessed nearly 100,000 infections alongside nine fatalities in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed this increase, underlining schools as significant hotspots. In response, the government is mobilizing efforts, including the distribution of 4.5 million vaccine doses, to curb further spread.

Cyber Police in about-face on scam workers: Most were trafficked

The cyber police said most of the 260 scam workers who have been screened are victims, with only two to three having volunteered to work for the call-center criminals rather just one of them being trafficked as earlier stated.

The head of the Technology Crime Suppression Division police, said 50 cyber policemen are working with frontline agencies in collecting information on criminal activities of these call-center gangs. They are also checking information on mobile phones and other electronic devices of the 260 scam workers who crossed over from Myanmar’s Myawaddy township to Phop Phra district of Tak province. A minivan traveling downhill collided with an elephant crossing the road in Chonburi province early yesterday morning, leaving two people injured. The elephant initially walked away from the scene but was later found dead.

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) forecasts the country’s economy to expand by 2.8% in 2025, supported by rising government spending and tourism recovery.

Danucha Pichayanan, NESDC secretary-general, reported yesterday that Thailand’s economy grew 3.2% in Q4/2024, bringing the full-year growth to 2.5%, up from 2% in 2023. The driver confessed to transporting the workers from Damnoen Saduak district to a destination in the south. Endangered Leopard Cat Cub Rescued from Roadside in Lampang After Fleeing Wildfire

Officials from the Wiang Kosai National Park rescue team have successfully rescued a male leopard cat found collapsed at the side of the road, believed to have fled from a nearby wildfire. The team discovered the exhausted young leopard cat cub lying near the road leading to the Lam Huai Samai Luang forest, just outside the park’s protected area. Measures being advanced to restructure nine target industries

Industry restructuring is a key engine for driving the country’s economy, particularly in boosting the national GDP. For this reason, the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) is advancing measures to restructure nine target industries as part of the policy “Industrial Reform for a Modern, Clean, Convenient, and Transparent Economy”, aiming to increase gross domestic product by at least 1%.

The plan is expected to be presented to the Cabinet this month. Thailand May Ease Overseas Income Tax Rules Amid Global Changes

In a move that could significantly impact expatriates and Thai nationals alike, Thailand’s government is contemplating adjustments to the taxation of overseas income. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira has indicated that the global economic landscape necessitates a re-evaluation of current tax regulations, though specific details were not provided.

Presently, the Thai Revenue Department (TRD) stipulates that, effective Jan. 1, 2024, any assessable income transferred into Thailand from abroad by either Thai citizens or foreigners residing in Thailand for at least 180 days within a calendar year will be subject to personal income tax. Wildfires rage across northern Thailand

The north of Thailand is grappling with a surge in wildfires, with 401 hotspots detected across 17 provinces, the Region 3 Forest Fire Control Center said. Fishing ban off Prachuap Khiri Khan coast starts tomorrow

A fishing ban has been issued to allow fish stock to recover off the coasts of Prachuap Khiri Khan down to Surat Thani, says the Department of Fishery (DoF). The ban is issued over two periods — from Feb. 15 to May 15 and from May 16 to June 14, affecting multiple maritime zones.

The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax

“I just returned from the Prachuap Khiri Khan tax office at the Prachuap provincial office (Not Hua Hin). I had my total amount that was transferred to fill in their forms, as well as proof the the monies were from Social Security office.

“While speaking to the personnel, they asked my wife where did my money come from. My wife showed them my form 1099 that showed how much was paid to me from the SSI. They then told her that all of that income on that piece of paper would be taxed and I would need to pay thousands on it to their office. I tried to explain to them (with wife’s help in Thai) that the DTA for SSI to Thailand is not taxable.” Continued …

A 67-year-old man was fatally crushed by a wild elephant yesterday while inspecting his palm plantation in Khao Sam Roi Yot District.

The head of Kui Buri National Park confirmed the death of Chaliyo from Sam Roi Yot District, who was found lying on his back with severe injuries after being trampled by an elephant. Sixty-seven of 77 provinces in Thailand were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, with the worst smog blanketing greater Bangkok, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTA).

Summer to start as February ends, bringing highs of 43°C

Thailand will officially enter the summer season at the end of February, with high temperatures lasting until May, the Thailand Meteorological Department announced yesterday. The Thai summer is characterized by a hot southerly wind covering the upper part of the country, it added.

PM orders review of 2-5pm, Buddhist holidays alcohol sale ban

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered a review of the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages from 2pm to 5pm following calls by business groups for eased regulations to support tourism.

A 33-year-old Russian tourist lost his life yesterday after sliding from a water slide at the rear of a tour boat near Koh Sak, off the coast of Pattaya.

Rescue personnel from Pattaya’s marine disaster response team and the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene by speedboat. Upon arrival, they found the tourist, identified as Andrew Anganov, lying unconscious without a pulse on the deck of a large tour boat near Koh Sak. Smog again covers much of Thailand, PKK at orange level

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust blanketed 48 out of the 76 Thai provinces, and Bangkok, today, with red levels in parts of the central plain and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported.

Forty-one provinces were shrouded with orange levels (starting to affect health) of PM2.5 ranging from 38.6 to 73.3µg/m³. They included Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Samut Prakan. Continued …

Regional deal signed to combat PM2.5 pollution

Thailand has signed an agreement with the entire membership of ASEAN to jointly deal with PM2.5, which is considered to be a transboundary haze. The harmful levels of PM2.5, from domestic and overseas sources, can affect the image of Thailand as an investment destination in Southeast Asia, according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

Bringing turtles back from the brink

The most recent discoveries of a female leatherback coming ashore to lay her eggs last month in Phang Nga province not only brought joy to conservationists but are also helping to shape future restoration plans for the endangered species to ensure that they will return to the Thai shores year after year.

“We’re glad to learn that leatherback is once again using the beaches in the Andaman Sea for nesting. We hope more will come this season,” says Hirun Kanghae, senior marine biologist at Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC), and leader of the center’s mission – to bring the threatened species including leatherbacks – back from the brink of extinction. Thailand’s EGCO Group to Invest Bt30 Billion in Renewable Energy Expansion

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has announced that its subsidiary, EGCO Group, plans to invest Bt30 billion (approximately USD836 million) in 2025 to expand its electricity generation capacity by 1,000 MW. The investment will primarily focus on accelerating renewable energy projects and strengthening cross-border investments.

EGCO Group’s renewable energy portfolio currently accounts for 21% of its total power generation, amounting to 1,440 MW. The company is actively developing biomass, solar, hydro, onshore and offshore wind, as well as battery and energy storage solutions. Continued …
