2024 is a year of the Wood Dragon, starting from Feb. 10 (Chinese New Year) and ending on Jan. 28, 2025 (Chinese New Year’s Eve).

The luckiest Chinese zodiac signs in 2024 are monkeys, roosters, and pigs. Then, with not quite so much luck, come oxes, rabbits, goats, and dogs. Dragons’ fortunes will be influenced by “opposition to Tai Sui”.

The dragon symbolizes power, nobleness, honor, luck, and success in traditional Chinese culture. The dragon is a supernatural being with no parallel for talent and excellence.

New Year holiday road death toll reaches 128

During the final three days of the year, the government recorded 1,150 traffic accidents that killed 128 people and injured 1,151 others across Thailand.

Announcing the statistics for Dec 29 to 31, Deputy National Police Chief Surachate Hakparn said on Monday that the most accidents (44) happened in Kanchanaburi. The western province also recorded the most injured people (43). Continued …

Speedboat Crashes Into Rocks In Phuket, Killing Russian Girl

The Phuket Regional Harbor Office received a report of a marine accident at 3:30 pm on Dec. 31 from the Andaman Marine Traffic and Safety Control Center, stating that a speedboat carrying seven passengers, the captain and one crew member, totaling nine people, had crashed into the rocks on the shore of Mai Thon Island, Chalong subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province.

All of the individuals on the boat, aged 3 to 63, were injured, and two of them were critically injured: the boat driver and a 5-year-old Russian girl who lost consciousness. Sadly, she died later in the Chalong hospital. Continued …

The Board of Investmens (BOI) has approved measures to promote investment to address the issue of PM2.5 particulate pollution, according to the organization’s secretary-general, Narit Therdsteerasukdi.

Economy in China is running low on fuel

Van On Its Way To Hua Hin Crashes, Seriously Hurting American Tourists

A passenger van with a Bangkok license plate collided with a rice-harvesting truck with a Phetchaburi license plate yesterday morning on Petchaburi Road (southbound) in Phetchaburi Province, seriously injuring two foreign tourists.

The rescue team from Tha Yang Hospital used cutting tools to free the two trapped American women from the wreckage at Kilometer 167-600, Moo 3, Tha Yang subdistrict, Tha Yang District, and take them to Tha Yang Hospital. Continued …

Thai Excise Department Eyes Alcohol Tax Reduction

On Dec. 18, Lawan Saengsanit, the director-general of the Revenue Department, publicly revealed the Thai Excise Department is scrutinizing reducing the alcohol tax structure appropriately to support Thailand’s tourism sector.

Dual-Track Railway Challenges: Delays and Upgrades

Suraphong Piyachote, the minister of transport, conducted on-site inspections last week to evaluate the operational efficiency of the newly inaugurated dual-track railway spanning from Ban Kubua Station in Ratchaburi province to Sapli Station in Chumphon province, covering an extensive distance of 348 kilometers. The visit aimed to scrutinize the initial implementation of the revamped timetable accommodating 60 train services.

Challenges have emerged for the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) in adhering to the new timetable. Cabinet caps diesel, electricity prices

The Cabinet has resolved to cap the price of diesel and electricity for households in a bid to ease people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

Srettha, who also doubles as finance minister, said under the measure proposed by the Energy Ministry, diesel will be retailed at no more than 30 baht per liter for three months, while the price of electricity for households using less than 300 units per month will be capped at no more than 4.2 baht per unit. Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

Telco regulator asked to review True’s service charges and quality

Four members of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, have proposed that the commission consider the service charges and quality of True Corp. after the successful merger of Total Access Communications Co. (DTAC) and True Corp. (TRUE) in March this year.

Foreigners Purchase 10,703 Condo Units in Thailand This Year

Fine dust pollution spikes across Thailand

Intensified fine dust pollution has led to heightened levels of fine particulate matter under 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, in 30 provinces across Thailand, including Bangkok. This development was recorded yesterday through the satellite-based Check Foon application, developed by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Samut Songkhram experienced the highest dust level, peaking at 84.1 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) at 8am. This level significantly surpassed the safe threshold of 50µg/m³, making it the only province to reach a code red status, indicating potentially harmful air. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has reported that Bangkok holds the record for the highest number of complaints concerning violence against children and women.

A sanctioned fishing season is underway at the Kaeng Krachan Dam in Phetchaburi, where the Fisheries Department’s inland fisheries prevention and suppression unit is permitting the capture of up to 60 giant Mekong catfish.
