Drunk drivers in Thailand to face more testing

The Royal Thai Police are introducing more options for testing drunk drivers, including more timely hospital testing. The new measures were endorsed by the Thai Cabinet yesterday, says deputy government spokesman Kharom Polpornklang.

The measures are in line with Sections 5 and 142 of the Land Transport Act and have been reviewed by various government departments, including the Justice Ministry, the Public Health Ministry, the Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the Court of Justice. Continued …

Court rules Move Forward attempted to topple constitutional monarchy

The Constitutional Court yesterday unanimously ruled that the Move Forward Party and its former leader Pita Limjaroenrat have attempted to overthrow the constitutional monarchy by campaigning to amend the lese majeste law or Article 112 and ordered them to cease all activities related to it.

Panel eyes boosting minimum wage

The tripartite wage committee is expected to consider another daily minimum wage increase in April, with the new rates likely to rise to 400 baht in some provinces.

This comes as Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said that Pairoj Chotikasathien, permanent secretary for labor, who serves as the committee’s chairman, has appointed a subcommittee to review a minimum wage calculation formula and study the possibility of increasing rates for some provinces and career types. An adviser to the finance minister said on Wednesday that the government was still awaiting a formal letter from the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission before it could go ahead with the implementation of the contentious digital wallet scheme.

The land price per square wah in Bangkok is expected to reach a new record high of more than 4 million baht for a plot on Ploenchit Road owned by the Sukosol family, being purchased by Central Group, according to a source in the property industry who requested anonymity.

January air quality in Chiang Mai sees huge improvement over last year

Chiang Mai locals enjoyed a clear sky on Wednesday as only 67 hot spots were detected by satellite imagery, an 83% drop compared to 395 spots recorded in January last year.

Chiang Mai Deputy Gov. Thossapol Phuanudom said on Wednesday that the overall air quality in the northern province was improving, as can be seen from the 16.8% year-on-year drop in the number of patients suffering from respiratory diseases. Continued …

Fossil findings point to ancient sea

Ancient marine animal fossils dating back more than 250 million years have been found in Phetchabun, not far from Si Thep ancient town.

Apsorn Sardsud, director of the Geology Division Department of Mineral Resources Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, said a team of archaeologists found fossil remains in tambon Ban Phot, Nong Phai district, which also indicated that the area where the ancient town of Si Thep is located was once connected to an ancient sea.
