All Three Workers Found Dead in Tunnel Collapse

In a conclusion to a 126-hour rescue operation, three workers trapped inside a collapsed railway tunnel have been found dead. Rescue teams encountered numerous challenges in their efforts to recover the bodies and are now preparing to remove them from the site.

Ekarach Sriarayapong, head of the office of the governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), provided an update on the situation. Soil Indicators not Working During Phuket Landslide

The Department of Mineral Resources has confirmed soil indicators used in Phuket to detect possible landslides are not working due to a lack of budget and maintenance. The Geohazard Operation Center, part of the Department of Mineral Resources, said the soil indicator on Nark Kerd Mountain was not operational prior to the landslide incident. The reason for this was a lack of budget for maintenance.

Additionally, the soil indicator had been installed near a tree in the parking area close to the landslide’s starting point. Bangkok Prepares for Rising Waters

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt has ensured the city’s readiness as floodwaters approach, focusing on key flood defense projects. Accompanied by Deputy Gov. Wisanu Supsompol and officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Drainage and Sewerage Department, Chadchart recently inspected vital flood levee repairs along the Chao Phraya River in Yannawa district. Confidence still low among homebuyers

The housing purchase confidence index (HPCI) in Greater Bangkok improved slightly in the second quarter from the first quarter, thanks to property measures, but remained low because of persistent negative factors.

Thailand’s top industrial park developer expects more land sales

WHA Corp., Thailand’s largest industrial estate developer, expects rising demand from foreign manufacturers and companies to trigger a surge in land sales in the second half of the year.

The Bangkok-based company sees land sales jumping to 224 hectares between July and December, an increase of about 40% from the first half, Chief Financial Officer Natthapatt Tanboon-Ek said Wednesday. Another snake in a toilet

A Samut Prakan man making his morning visit to the toilet was startled on Wednesday by a sudden, sharp pain in his testicles after he sat down. He had been bitten by a python hiding in the toilet bowl, after which the reptile remained firmly attached to his scrotum before he was able to shake it off.

Baht poised to reach 34 to the greenback

Strong baht to affect Q4 exports

Meesak Chunharakchoti, former president of the Thai Real Estate Assn., revealed that Chinese investors are increasingly buying land outside industrial estates in the Rayong region, such as in Nikhom Phatthana, Bo Win and Pluak Daeng districts, to set up factories to support investment in electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing in Thailand. Land prices in the industrial estates are relatively high, with some negotiations leading to discounts of up to 50%.

Thai Hotels Report 170-Million-Baht Loss after German Tour Company’s Downfall

A disagreement Sunday morning at an unlicensed Soi 80 Hua Hin pub led to the fatal shooting of Sgt. Major Rojchanaphon Rojchanaphanit, an intelligence officer at Thanarat Camp. The commotion at Tiny Club saw police commissioner Jakkrit Worawongphanitkul allegedly pulling a 9 mm. pistol, fatally shooting Punch and injuring two other patrons.

At approximately 4 am , Hua Hin Police Station received a report about a dispute turning violent in the Tiny Club on Soi Hua Hin 80. 10 Northeast provinces at risk of severe drought in next 10 years

Ten provinces in Thailand’s northeastern region are likely to experience severe drought over the next decade, according to drought trends forecast by the Climate Change and Environmental Department on Wednesday. The forecast was based on two climate model scenarios: one assuming moderate greenhouse gas emissions and one with high emissions.

The moderate emissions scenario assumes greenhouse gas emissions in 2100 will be close to current levels, potentially raising the global average surface temperature by about 2.7 degrees Celsius between 2081 and 2100. Thailand’s overall unemployment rate dropped from May to June, except in Bangkok, according to a new survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

Institute predicts 8.8% jump in food exports to Bt1.6 trillion

The value of Thailand’s food exports is expected to increase by 8.8% year-on-year to 1.6 trillion baht this year, driven by growing global demand and a decrease in the prices of raw materials, says the National Food Institute (NFI).

Kingdom plunged into political turmoil as PM Srettha is removed from office

Thailand was plunged into crisis on Wednesday afternoon when the Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. In effect, the move also collapsed the current coalition government.

The baht appreciated to below 35 per U.S. dollar, driven by a weakening greenback as the market expects a Federal Reserve rate cut following the release of recent U.S. economic data. On Wednesday the baht opened at 35.03 per dollar, strengthening from Tuesday’s close of 35.16.

Chiva-Som Hua Hin marks International Day for Mangrove Conservation

Chiva-Som Hua Hin marked this year’s International Day for Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem with significant steps toward environmental sustainability. The Chiva-Som team, joined by local youth, planted 500 mangrove trees at the Krailart Niwate Mangrove Project, reinforcing their commitment to preserving Hua Hin’s and the world’s ecosystems.

This annual mangrove reforestation initiative has become a tradition for Chiva-Som Hua Hin, with a focus on enhancing the Krailart Niwate Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation Project. Located in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, this urban mangrove forest is the last of its kind in Hua Hin. Thailand awaits court verdict that may topple PM Srettha

A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. The petition against Srettha was brought originally by a group of 40 senators, who claimed the appointment was grounds for his disqualification under the charter. Continued …

Heavy rain warning for three Thai regions

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rain in three regions, with the northern region expected to face 70% rainfall. Bangkok will experience heavy showers from afternoon to evening.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 30% of the area will experience thunderstorms, mainly in Phetchaburi, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C to 34 to 36°C, with southwesterly winds at 15 to 30 kilometers per hour and waves about 1 meter high, increasing in thunderstorm areas. Continued …

Playful mother elephant flips parked SUV in Khao Yai for fun

A TikTok clip that some found shocking and others amusing shows a wild elephant overturning a parked SUV at Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima. The incident took place on Monday at the Thanarat Zone, a popular tourist spot with accommodations and camping grounds.

A former school principal in Nakhon Sawan has been sentenced to 50 years in jail for siphoning some 596,000 baht from his students’ lunch budget in 2021.

Market expectations were jolted earlier this month when the U.S. job market created only 114,000 openings in July, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, the highest since October 2021.

Tax gain from casino legalization ‘not worth it’

Several parties have criticized the government’s proposed bill to allow casinos to operate legally within entertainment complexes in the country, saying that tax revenue gained from casinos would not be worth the ensuing social problems.

A source from the Finance Ministry said this week that the draft of the Entertainment Complex Act is in the final stretch and set to undergo a public hearing this month. The draft stipulates that entertainment complex operators must register as a company in Thailand with registered capital of at least 10 billion baht. Thailand May Set Record for New Business Registrations

Thailand is poised to set a new record for business registrations this year, with over 90,000 new companies expected, driven largely by government measures, including the 10,000-baht handout scheme, the Commerce Ministry announced.

Banks set to connect to Thang Rath app for digital handout

Thailand’s banks are ready to connect to the open-loop payment system of the Thang Rath application, which will be used to disburse 10,000-baht digital payments to eligible Thais under the government’s digital wallet scheme, government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said today.

A random Highway Patrol police stop on Sunday led to the discovery of two unlicensed Chinese-owned factories. Positioning Thailand as a hub for senior citizens to enjoy life post-retirement

The current global trend of social change toward an aging society is becoming more evident. According to the United Nations’ World Population 2022 report, the global population is projected to reach 8 billion, with 10% being over the age of 65. This percentage is expected to increase to 16% by 2050.

In Thailand, by 2024, the country will have fully transitioned into an aging society. Data from the Ministry of Interior shows that in 2023 Thailand had approximately 13 million people aged 60 and above, making up one-fifth of the total population of 66,057,967. Rice farmers to sue if water is drained into their rice fields

Rice farmers in the Sena district of Ayutthaya province are threatening to sue the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) for compensation if the department drains excess water into their rice fields before Sept. 15, flooding their unharvested crops.

Pradab Kongpramoon, a farmer in Ban Krathum in Sena district, said that there are more than 22,400 hectares of rice fields, with only some having been harvested. Of his own 8 hectares, he said his rice plants are about 90-days old and can be harvested in the next 30 days, adding that water from a nearby canal is already flooding his field. Continued …

Thousands of Blackchin tilapia wash up on Phetchaburi beach

Fishermen in Bang Kaeo subdistrict of Phetchaburi province have each reaped a harvest of over 100kg of Blackchin tilapia fish, which washed ashore on Bang Kaeo Beach this morning. Fishermen told the media that they had never seen so many Blackchin tilapia being washed ashore, although they had seen them at sea.

The fishermen kept only the large fish, to be used as food for crabs, and ignored the smaller ones, which were left to die on the beach. Continued …

Thai Police Raid Chinese Factories: Hazardous Chemicals Found Again

Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division police raided illegal aluminum dross-smelting factories, seizing over 10,000 tons of contraband. They identified it as hazardous to living organisms. The owners are Chinese nationals.

On Sunday, police from the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division, armed with a court warrant, searched Phoem Phoon Sap factory in Phrong Madua, Mueang Nakhon Pathom, and Tai Bao Aluminum factory in Bang Kachao, Mueang Samut Sakhon. Continued …

Thailand launches price cuts to boost economy before digital wallet

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat has instructed the Revenue Department to reach out to the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu, which recently entered the Thai market, to encourage it to register for the tax system.

Team Mitsubishi To Compete in Asia Cross Country Rally in Hua Hin

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will be taking on the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2024 scheduled for Aug. 11 to 17. In this competition, which will be held in southern and central Thailand, the team will be driving four Triton1 pickup trucks, aiming to reclaim the title after two years.

A total of 67 vehicles will compete in this year’s AXCR – 46 in the auto category, 19 in the moto category, and 2 in the sidecar category. The rally proper begins with Leg 1 on Aug. 12. Leg 2 is the longest section of the competition, traveling from Surat Thani to Hua Hin, and is expected to be challenging, with large ruts and rock debris on the road surface. Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. Continued …

New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe. Inward immigration may be the only thing that can halt Thailand’s economic decline

As Thailand’s government launched its digital wallet scheme, and with results for the second quarter expected shortly, maybe it is time to look at the bigger picture and confront Thailand’s economic prospects. In short, the genuine likelihood is that its GDP may at some point go into decline if it fails to overcome its population crisis.

This week, an Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) study from Siam Commercial Bank suggested that Thailand is on the same road as Japan. It suggested weak growth extending until 2050. TAT eyes 370-billion-baht tourism revenue from 55 secondary provinces

After launching the “365 Days of Wonders: Amazing Places to Visit” campaign this year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) syas it expects a 40% increase in revenue year on year, or 370 billion baht, from domestic tourists visiting secondary tourist provinces nationwide.

TAT Gov. Thapanee Kiatphaibool said on Friday that the agency estimated that Thai tourists will make some 118 million trips to these second-tier tourist destinations this year, a jump by 18% from the previous year. Continued …

A Thai traditional massage association has appealed to the Minister of Public Health to address issues with massage therapist registration and foreign workers illegally entering the profession.

Pattaya tourism operators seek to shed sordid image

Pattaya tourism operators submitted a tourism development proposal to the tourism minister, aiming to shift its image to family oriented-tourism and remove its associations with sex tourism and illegal gambling. The Association of Chonburi Tourism Federation (ACTF) recently held a meeting with Tourism Minister Sermsak Pongpanit.
