Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Carden clarified that only overseas income transferred to Thailand is relevant for taxation. Issues like pre-taxed pensions and double taxation treaties should also be considered. Continued …

Ministry to ease blow of fuel subsidy ending

The Energy Ministry is planning to launch measures to soften the impact of expiring biofuel price subsidies in 2027, as the fuels become more expensive, affecting palm and sugar cane growers.

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Digital economy seen growing 19% in 2024

Thailand’s digital economy continues to record strong double-digit growth, fueled by the rise of e-commerce, particularly video commerce and online travel services. In 2024, the country’s digital economy is expected to grow 19% over last year to US$46 billion on the basis of gross merchandise value (GMV).

The country’s digital economy expanded 26% in 2023 to generate a GMV of $39 billion and it is projected to reach a GMV of $100-165 billion in 2030, according to a report jointly produced by Google, Temasek and Bain & Co. Continued …

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. Thailand braces for chill in the north, rains in the south

Get ready for a dramatic weather shift as northern and northeastern Thailand is set to feel a temperature dip over the next 24 hours, while the southern regions, including Bangkok, face heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned that a monsoon trough will pass through the southern region, bringing moderate to heavy rains to the Gulf of Thailand and the southern provinces. On the eastern coast, thunderstorms will dominate, with up to 80% of the area affected by heavy torrential rain. LNG prices to keep power bills stable

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices are likely to stay unchanged in early 2025, putting less pressure on the authorities preparing to calculate a new power tariff for electricity bills between January and April next year, says the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

In an incident that unfolded near Pattaya Beach yesterday, police were called to break up a brawl between two groups of foreign nationals. The fight, allegedly sparked by competition over illegal sex work in the area, involved several Uzbek women who had reportedly divided into rival factions to argue over territorial boundaries.

The incident took place at the entrance of Soi 13/4 on Pattaya Beach Road, where authorities found two groups of Uzbek women engaged in a heated dispute, drawing the attention of tourists and local bystanders. Inflation up in Octpber, below forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.83% in October from a year earlier, the Commerce Ministry said today, remaining below the Bank of Thailand’s target range for inflation of 1% to 3%.

The figure compared with a forecast increase of 0.94% in a Reuters poll, and an annual inflation rate of 0.61% in September. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 0.77% on the year, versus a forecast rise of 0.79%. Continued …

No matter how the United States presidential election turns out, a new round of the U.S.-China trade war is almost inevitable, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday, urging Thai businesses to prepare for the impact, namely the shifting of manufacturing and export bases.

“No matter who becomes the next U.S. president, the trade war with China will pose a new challenge for Thai businesses,” TNSC chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said, adding that both the U.S. and China have been Thailand’s biggest trade partners in the past years. Continued …

Thailand welcomes 29 million tourists, expects more as high season kicks in

Thailand has welcomed more than 29.08 million foreign tourists, generating approximately 1.358 trillion baht in revenue from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year.

According to statistics from the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chinese tourists topped the list of arrivals with over 5.75 million, followed by tourists from Malaysia (4.18 million), India (1.72 million), South Korea (1.53 million), and Russia (1.3 million) during the period. Continued …

Domestic tourists up 9% YOY, but likely to miss Bt1-trillion revenue goal

The number of domestic travelers in the first nine months of this year crossed 148.02 million person-trips, increasing 8.98% year on year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Tuesday. These travelers have generated income to local tourism businesses at around 702.52 billion baht, increasing 12.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, it said.

TAT estimated that total domestic tourists this year could exceed 200 million person-trips, and could even reach 230 million, said Nithee Seeprae, deputy governor for marketing communications. Continued …

Samui to welcome more cruise ships

Twenty-four cruise ships are scheduled to visit Koh Samui in Surat Thani in the current high season, helping the southern province rise two places in the top 10 list of most-visited Thai destinations, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The island on Tuesday morning welcomed 2,830 international visitors on the Celebrity Solstice at Nathon pier in tambon Ang Thong. Pattaya City and the Marine Department have launched “Better Pattaya Bay” – aimed at improving the management of speedboat, jet ski and banana boat services along Pattaya Beach.

Midsummer, Saab sign pact for 200 MW solar plant in Thailand

Sweden’s solar energy company Midsummer AB and defense firm Saab AB have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the aim of establishing a long-term partnership in Thailand, which includes the development of a 200-MW facility to produce thin film solar cells.

The MoU aims to establish a long-term, comprehensive framework to explore and identify potential activities for industrial cooperation in Thailand and other export markets. The focus will be on solar energy manufacturing and technology, a core element of Midsummer’s expertise. Continued …

Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. High blood pressure was the top medical condition among universal healthcare service outpatients in 2023, according to Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO).

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. The NESDC Office explained that living in their own houses also counted as a cost poor families did not have to bear. Continued …

Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

The company’s managing director, Kessara Thanyalakpark, said that rising household debt was among factors that hurt Bangkokians’ ability to purchase houses. “Currently, there is a disconnect between the demand for housing and the high prices set by property developers,” she said. Continued …

Foreign investment in Thailand rallied 60% to 134 billion baht in value for the first nine months of this year, with Japan continuing to top the list of source countries, a government spokesman said on Sunday.

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. In the first nine months, Thailand’s imports amounted to $229.1328 billion, a 5.5% increase, resulting in a trade deficit of $5.9568 billion, or nearly 200 billion baht. Continued …

One issue the private sector has urged the government to address is the continuous influx of Chinese goods into Thailand, which significantly impacts 23 industry groups, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Foundation documents impact of plastic waste in Thailand

Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Chiang Mai Authority has backed a Thai-Chinese waste-to-energy power plant that is expected to take two years to complete. The joint investment agreement, valued at 2.3 billion baht, was signed on Friday.

Weather warnings have been issued for 33 provinces in Thailand, forecasting heavy rain covering 30% of areas due to a new wave of cold air bringing strong winds and a significant temperature drop expected today.

In the south (east coast), thunderstorms are expected in 40% of the area, with heavy rain in some places, mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces. The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) uhas nveiled its plan to keep Thailand’s diesel prices under 33 baht per liter, even though the current subsidy scheme is coming to a halt. This decision steers from an unexpected upturn in OFFO’s finances, courtesy of plummeting global oil prices.

Fiscal 2024’s figures saw a dip in OFFO’s losses, thanks to reduced outlays on domestic diesel subsidies. Thailand boosts climate resilience in coastal areas with UN grant

Thailand is enhancing its capacity to tackle the escalating threat of climate change, particularly in its marine and coastal areas. This initiative, a collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is titled “Increasing Resilience to Climate Change Impacts in Marine and Coastal Areas along the Gulf of Thailand”, and is supported by a US$3 million (101.2 million baht) grant from the Green Climate Fund.

Developing countries begin to say no to waste colonialism from developed nations

Despite China’s ban on solid waste imports three years ago, developed countries continue to exploit regulatory loopholes to export waste to developing countries, including China, avoiding higher recycling costs at home. Other developing countries, such as those in Southeast Asia, alongside China, have increasingly restricted foreign waste imports, but this has not halted the practice.

A key driver of this issue is the profitability and low risk of waste trafficking. Developed countries, aiming to cut costs, use “waste colonialism” as a tactic, exporting plastic and other low-value waste, Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs says. Bangkok police detained seven individuals yesterday, including six officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, linked to an elaborate Bt300-million extortion scheme involving a fake search warrant and passport forgery accusations. Rocket Fire from Lebanon Kills 4 Thai Workers

Thai economy continued to grow in Q3, but slowed in September

Thailand’s economy in the third quarter this year expanded from the previous quarter, but economic activities began slowing in September, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) said in its monthly report on economic and monetary conditions.

The central bank said the trend in September was mainly the decline of exports after strong growth in August. Private consumption also declined, it said, particularly in durables, consistent with a decrease in manufacturing production, while private investment was stable. Continued …

The Thai industrial sector is at risk of flood and drought triggered by global warming, and those disasters were likely to become more severe in the future, the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) warned on Wednesday.

The Thai cabinet has decided to grant Thai citizenship to about 483,000 migrants who have been living in Thailand since 1984 and children born in Thailand to parents in ethnic minority groups.

Spokesman for the prime minister’s office, Jirayu Huangsap, said that since these documented migrant workers have been working in Thailand for a long time, the cabinet feels that it is appropriate to grant them Thai citizenship, so they can travel freely and still beneficially contribute to the development of the Thai economy. South Thailand braces for downpour

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning, highlighting light rain in Bangkok and its vicinity, the central region, and the east, while the south braces for heavy rainfall affecting 60% of the area.

Violence erupts in Deep South as deadline on Tak Bai case nears

Three violent attacks were carried out in Pattani and Narathiwat Wednesday evening and early Thursday in what are suspected to be symbolic attacks related to the Tak Bai massacre case, the statute of limitations on which is due to expire today.

Tak Bai massacre families left without justice as charge deadline expires

Khalijah Musa was just 12 years old when her brother Sari was stuffed into a Thai army truck, hands bound, joining a pile of arrested protesters who all suffocated to death.

Twenty years after the Oct, 25, 2004, tragedy, known as the “Tak Bai massacre”, Musa and the other relatives of the 78 victims are mourning the fact that the killers will never be brought to justice. Chinese-grown Shine Muscat grapes contaminated with dangerous chemicals

Shine Muscat grapes imported from China have been found to be heavily laced with dangerous chemicals, including chlorpyrifos, the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-Pan) and the Foundation for Consumers announced.

The two consumer protection organizations recently conducted laboratory tests on 24 samples of the juicy and popular grapes purchased from retail outlets, vendors and wet markets. Nine samples were imported from China, while the remaining 15 samples were imported from unknown sources. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices take a dive

Gold prices have taken a nosedive in Thailand, with gold ornaments now pegged at 44,100 baht per baht weight. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reports a 300-baht drop from yesterday, putting an end to the recent upward streak.

As of this morning, gold bullion is fetching 43,500 baht to buy and 43,600 baht to sell per baht weight. Meanwhile, 96.5% purity gold ornaments are being snapped up for 42,720.88 baht but hitting the market at 44,100 baht. Continued …

Phuket cannabis shop owner finds thieves for a taste of revenge

One of the cannabis shop owners in Phuket who fell victim to two foreign thieves, yesterday tracked down the suspects and physically assaulted them at their accommodation.

Several cannabis shop owners in Phuket reached out to other vendors to warn them after losing products to the two foreign thieves, whose identities remain undisclosed. CCTV footage from some of the ganja shops showed the thieves stealing entire jars of products from each shop. Continued …

Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. It added that the government’s state welfare card scheme in 2023 accepted applications from those who had missed the application deadlines in the previous rounds, allowing more people to gain access to state-funded services and benefits. Thailand’s vehicle production hits the brakes

The automotive industry in Thailand has experienced a significant downturn in vehicle production, with September seeing a total of 122,277 units produced, marking a 25.5% decrease from the same period last year.

This decline reflects a 15.8% reduction in vehicles manufactured for export, totalling 87,666 units, and a 42.3% drop in vehicles produced for domestic sales, amounting to 34,611 units. Continued …

The Ministry of Finance has rolled out new registrations for the 2025 state welfare card, aiming to wrap up all the eligibility checks by March 31 next year. A fresh round of financial lifelines is coming with 1,545 baht heading straight into the pockets of those who qualify.

Costco Shipping Ports Ltd. has acquired 12.5% and 30% ownership holdings in Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co., (TLT) and Hutchison Laem Chabang Terminal (HLT).

ZHAO Fengnian, the chief accountant, signed the project agreement with collaborating firms at the project signing event in Vietnam on Wednesday, in the presence of ZHU Tao, the chairman of the board of Costco Shipping Ports. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $110 million, which includes the Berth A2
in TLT, Berths A3, C1-C2 and D1-D3 in HLT, where D1-D3 is partly under construction. Continued …

Bangkok housing market set to decline amid poor economy

SCB EIC, the research center of Siam Commercial Bank, predicts that the transfer of new residential units in Greater Bangkok will decline by 10% this year, with a further contraction of 1%-3% projected for 2025, mainly due to the country’s sluggish economy.

People living in Bangkok and its surrounding areas are being advised by the Pollution Control Department to get ready for the first wave of PM2.5 (particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter) in the air from Thursday until Sunday, due to the arrival of a moderate cold front from China and poor air circulation.

According to police reports submitted to the Senate committee on public participation, human rights, and consumer protection, all 14 defendants and suspects involved in the two Tak Bai massacre cases have left Thailand. The committee, chaired by Sen. Angkhana Neelapaijit, a prominent human rights defender, received the update as both cases near their expiration on Friday.

Among the high-profile figures is Gen. Pisarn Wattanawongkiri, former Fourth Army Region commander and a former party-list MP of the ruling party, who is believed to have fled to Tokyo. Almost 7,000 fraud complaints have been laid against The iCon Group, with total reported losses exceeding 2 billion baht.

Koh Samui Villas Encounter Demolition Delay as Legal Dispute Unfolds

In a standoff on Koh Samui yesterday, local authorities’ attempts to enforce demolition of 11 unauthorized luxury villas hit a legal roadblock. The villas, part of the Ariya Residence project, are situated in Moo 3, Maret, and have been under scrutiny due to violations of the Building Control Act of 2522 (1979).

Leading the operation, Koh Samui Mayor Ramnet Jaikang and legal officer Pallop Meepian, accompanied by police and environmental officials, sought to implement a demolition order issued in 2019. Bangkok motorists may face congestion fee

The Transport Ministry will spend six months to a year studying the feasibility of imposing a congestion fee on motorists using busy roads in Bangkok, said Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit.

Expats’ demand for luxury condos jumps 8%

Foreigners snapped up 33% of the luxury condominium units sold by CBRE Thailand in the first half of 2024, increasing from 25% recorded during the same period of the previous year, the property agent/real estate consultant said on Monday.

The rising demand for luxury condos among foreigners is in line with the increasing number of expats in Thailand, standing at 188,232 people as of the end of 2023, said Artitaya Kasemlawan, CBRE’s head of residential sales, adding that the number is close to that of before the Covid-19 pandemic. FPO says 14.1 million received handout

Some 14.1 million people classified as vulnerable have received the government’s 10,000-baht cash handout, according to the chief of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO).
