Chiva-Som Hua Hin marks International Day for Mangrove Conservation

Chiva-Som Hua Hin marked this year’s International Day for Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem with significant steps toward environmental sustainability. The Chiva-Som team, joined by local youth, planted 500 mangrove trees at the Krailart Niwate Mangrove Project, reinforcing their commitment to preserving Hua Hin’s and the world’s ecosystems.

This annual mangrove reforestation initiative has become a tradition for Chiva-Som Hua Hin, with a focus on enhancing the Krailart Niwate Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation Project. A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. The petition against Srettha was brought originally by a group of 40 senators, who claimed the appointment was grounds for his disqualification under the charter. Continued …

Heavy rain warning for three Thai regions

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rain in three regions, with the northern region expected to face 70% rainfall. Bangkok will experience heavy showers from afternoon to evening.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 30% of the area will experience thunderstorms, mainly in Phetchaburi, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. A TikTok clip that some found shocking and others amusing shows a wild elephant overturning a parked SUV at Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima. The incident took place on Monday at the Thanarat Zone, a popular tourist spot with accommodations and camping grounds.

Several parties have criticized the government’s proposed bill to allow casinos to operate legally within entertainment complexes in the country, saying that tax revenue gained from casinos would not be worth the ensuing social problems.

A source from the Finance Ministry said this week that the draft of the Entertainment Complex Act is in the final stretch and set to undergo a public hearing this month. The draft stipulates that entertainment complex operators must register as a company in Thailand with registered capital of at least 10 billion baht. Thailand May Set Record for New Business Registrations

Thailand is poised to set a new record for business registrations this year, with over 90,000 new companies expected, driven largely by government measures, including the 10,000-baht handout scheme, the Commerce Ministry announced.

New dual-track railway opens on southern line

The southern dual-track route from Nakhon Pathom to Chumphon covering 421 kilometers was opened to passengers on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said.

Tesla has scrapped plans to build plants in the ASEAN countries, according to reports. Quoting an anonymous official source, media reported that Tesla had pulled out the team overseeing the project late last year.

Tesla is currently only discussing charging stations, with factory plans suspended in Thailand and worldwide. “They are not proceeding in Malaysia, Indonesia, or anywhere else except for China, America, and Germany,” said the source. Continued …

Weather office says La Nina already under way

Thailand’s Department of Rural Roads is planning to use a revolutionary asphalt grade for repairs to the road connecting Muang District with Nakhon Ratchasima Airport. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will be taking on the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2024 scheduled for Aug. 11 to 17. In this competition, which will be held in southern and central Thailand, the team will be driving four Triton1 pickup trucks, aiming to reclaim the title after two years.

A total of 67 vehicles will compete in this year’s AXCR – 46 in the auto category, 19 in the moto category, and 2 in the sidecar category. The rally proper begins with Leg 1 on Aug. 12. Leg 2 is the longest section of the competition, traveling from Surat Thani to Hua Hin, and is expected to be challenging, with large ruts and rock debris on the road surface. Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe. Heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash 39 provinces across Thailand, with severe weather warnings issued for potential flash floods and runoff. Bangkok is also bracing for significant rainfall, with 70% of the area anticipated to be affected.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, mostly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. Consumption of shark fin has declined by more than one-third in Thailand since 2017, according to a new report from wildlife advocacy group WildAid. But with more than half of urban Thai citizens reporting they still plan to eat shark in the future, demand remains high.

“Thais are becoming more aware of the importance of sharks to the ocean,” Petch Manopawitr, a conservation scientist and Thailand program adviser at WildAid, said in a statement. “(However), not only does the demand for shark fin persist, but sharks are becoming more commonly used in pet food and snacks, as well.” Continued …

The State Railway of Thailand ( SRT ) stopped services through Phasadet tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in Thailand at 5.2km, yesterday within hours of its opening. The decision was taken after videos of dust blowing into carriages were posted online.

More work ahead on marijuana change

The government’s backtracking from its plan to relist cannabis as a narcotic drug is a step in the right direction. The reversal was ordered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin just days before a meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB).

Cannabis advocates praised the decision, ending a 10-day protest by advocacy group Writing Thailand’s Cannabis Future near Government House. While it has momentum, the advocacy group must work hard to find scientific evidence to justify its pro-cannabis stance and even harder to fight the stigma surrounding this medicinal plant. First, was the loud cries of condemnation against a large billboard solely in Chinese language found in the heart of Bangkok’s Huai Kwang district offering potential Chinese customers to purchase passports and nationalities from four countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Turkey, and Vanuatu.

Instant coffee market set for 5% growth

Thailand’s instant coffee market is expected to grow by 5% this year as Nescafé Thailand plans to allocate 620 million baht for brand communication advertising.

Jojo Dela Cruz, business executive officer of Nestlé (Thai) Ltd.’s coffee and creamer business unit, said that in this year’s first quarter the value of the country’s instant coffee market was 5.7 billion baht, up 5% when compared with the corresponding period last year, while the value of the ready-to-drink coffee market reached 3.8 billion baht, up 10% from the corresponding period last year. People were being invited to experience romantic vibes in the rainy season on a special Kiha 183 tourism train, which will make 16 trips on seven routes in August and September. Lopburi Municipality captures 150 monkeys in new operation

Lopburi Municipality captured over 150 monkeys in the first two days of a new operation aimed at controlling the monkey population in the city. The goal is to capture at least 500 monkeys within 10 days, with support from 12 military personnel from the 13th Military Circle.

New Post-Graduate Visa for Foreign Students Implemented

More macaques captured in Lop Buri

Thirty-eight long-tailed  macaques were captured yesterday in a new round of relocations, jointly launched by the Lop Buri municipal administration and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, to contain the population of the monkeys and to reduce the disturbance they cause.

The current operation will last 10 days, with an aim to capture up to 500 macaques for relocation to a shelter. A big cage has been placed near the old building of the waterworks office, in which to keep the captured primates during the 10-day operation before relocation. Continued … 

Residents squeal in protest as pig farm stinks up Chon Buri canal

Hundreds of residents in Chon Buri’s Phanat Nikhom district gathered yesterday to protest against a major pig farm, accusing it of polluting a local canal and causing a persistent foul odor for several years. The protestors assembled in front of the pig farm, which occupies 20 rai and houses over 8,000 pigs. The government will start buying invasive fish species blackchin tilapia at 15 baht per kilogram starting next month at 49 buying stations in 14 provinces, the Agriculture and Cooperatives ministry said on Monday.

The 49 buying stations will be located at fish markets registered with the Fisheries Department in 14 provinces where high numbers of invasive fish have been reported. Riverside residents and businesses along the Chao Phraya River in Uthai Thani, Sing Buri, Lop Buri, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya and Chainat have been advised to brace for possible flooding, as a result of an increase in the amount of water being released through the Chao Phraya Dam in Chainat province.

Water runoff from northern provinces, following heavy rainfall there over the past several weeks, has increased the volume of water in the reservoir, forcing the irrigation office in Chainat to increase the discharge through the dam, from 100 cubic meters/second to 610 cubic meters/second, to ease the pressure on the dam. – Thai PBS

The revered Korean Dharma master and Buddhist activist Venerable Pomnyun Sunim and volunteers from the Buddhist humanitarian relief organization JTS Korea, accompanied by a delegation from the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB), attended a formal ceremony to inaugurate two new buildings for a Buddhist orphanage in the western Thai province of Kanchanaburi.
