Issara United to launch THB1.7-billion Sasa Hua Hin condo project in Hua Hin

Issara United, a joint venture between SET-listed developer Charn Issara Development and Thai conglomerate Saha Group, will launch a new condo project in Hua Hin worth 1.7 billion baht to capitalize on the robust demand for vacation homes.

Thailand’s exports expected to contract this year

The Thai National Shippers’ Council has predicted that Thailand’s exports this year would contract 1.5% year-on-year.

Council chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said although Thailand’s exports had started to see a brighter trend, its growth would remain negative because of the contraction earlier in the year. Nearly 130 companies in Thailand that violated labor rights have been blacklisted, while six Myanmar companies sending workers to Thailand have had their licenses revoked temporarily, according to the Ministry of Labor.

Kathin ceremony: Ancient, ‘uncertain’ tradition

Kathin is a Buddhist festival that comes at the end of the rainy season and is usually held in October. Traditionally, Theravada Buddhist monks spend the rainy season in retreat at their pagodas and this festival marks the end of that period.

Kathin, or Kathina, is a Pali word referring to the wooden sewing frame used to measure the length and width of the fabric that the robes of Buddhist monks are cut from and held in place if assembled from scraps. Five goat carcasses were found discarded on the roadside in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, raising fears of a disease outbreak. Residents alerted the animal health officials to investigate the situation.

Long boat racing returns to Kao Tao this weekend

Khao Tao Reservoir will host the 16th edition of “Long Boat Racing for River Masters” today through Sunday. Participants from all over Thailand are expected to compete across four boat categories.

The event will feature traditional Lao vessels, ancient long boats, Naga head long boats from Nan province, and iron long boats from Buriram.

The schedule:

November 18: 8:30 am – Opening ceremony; 9 am – Commencement of the long boat races; 7:30 pm – Performance by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation. 8 pm – Performance by artist Tom Dundee.

November 19: 9 am – Semifinals and finals for all boat categories. 3 pm – Presentation of the royal trophy and other awards to competition winners. 4 pm – Closing ceremony.

Earth deity inspires Miss Universe Thailand’s costume

Thai-Danish beauty queen Anntonia Porsild looked stunning in an eye-catching national costume as she competed in the 72nd Miss Universe 2023 pageant being held in San Salvador, El Salvador. The national costume for this year is called “Ayutthaya Kingdom’s Goddess”, and was inspired by the statue of Phra Mae Thorani, the earth deity in Buddhist mythology. Thais believe Phra Mae Thorani brings prosperity to the land and dispels evil. Anntonia, 26, was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2023 in August and has gone on to represent Thailand in the international pageant this week, competing against representatives from over 80 countries. Meteor shower to light up Thai skies tonight

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) said on Thursday that people should keep an eye out for the Leonid meteor shower that will light up the eastern skies from after midnight tolnight to early Saturday morning.

Issuing of gun carry permits suspended nationwide

The issuance of permits for individuals to carry firearms in public has been suspended nationwide to ensure people’s safety, as instructed by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Interior Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern said on Thursday.

Suttipong said an order has been sent to the governors of all 76 provinces and he has coordinated with the national police chief (Gen. Torsak Sukvimol), who has the authority to issue gun-carrying permits in Bangkok, to suspend the issuance of permits until further notice. Continued …

Delay may blunt effect of digital wallet handout

Nine must-do highlights of Hua Hin

Change in the tax law does target expats living in Thailand

A former chairman of an international law firm in Bangkok has warned that a new taxation directive issued by the Revenue Department targeting foreign income sources faces a legal challenge and will create more reporting obligations and confusion. The order published on Sept. 15 2altering a 38-year-old interpretation, is a definite step by the government to widen the tax base, meaning more significant reporting requirements, at the very least for expats living in Thailand.

Kitipong Urapeepattanapong, along with other legal experts, including a Supreme Court judge, is calling on the Thai government to overhaul the tax system thoroughly to make it competitive with Hong Kong and Singapore. Continued …

Open to 4am is OK, but alcohol sales are not

The Thai government will initially permit bars and nightclubs in four provinces, including Chonburi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok, to operate until 4am, as announced by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, however, “Every private sector shall follow the laws, especially, the extension of opening service of entertainment districts to 4am, but it does not mean that selling liquor beyond prescribed legal hours: 2am. That abandoned baby Muntjac deer Expat News reported on a few days ago is now safe and recovering at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). The deer, who has been named Cha Lao, was found all alone and was being chased by street dogs when it was rescued. AT WFFT, he was given a medical examination and has since been receiving specialist care. including regular bottle feeding with warmed milk. Two killed, two injured in violent brawl over a woman

A violent brawl over a woman led to the deaths of two individuals and the injuries of two others in Prachinburi province. The violent brawl incident took place in front of a residential building where the victims were drinking alcohol. The police were able to apprehend one suspect at midnight today.

Burmese man shot dead by Thai police in Kui Buri after knife attack

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in the Kui Buri district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province when a 30-year-old Burmese man was shot dead by local police. Bangkok air pollution back to hazardous as PM2.5 season gets underway

Air pollution in Bangkok rose to the “orange” level (starting to affect health) on Tuesday, signalling the start of the so-called PM2.5 season.

Levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 24.3 to 49.8 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) across the city, according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD). Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

New electricity tariff approved, reducing power bills to end of year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved a new electricity tariff of 3.99 baht per kilowatt-hour, a reduction aimed at decreasing power bills for households and businesses for the remaining four months of this year.

In its initial meeting on Sept.13, the cabinet agreed to lower the electricity tariff from 4.45 baht to 4.10 baht per unit. However, in a subsequent meeting on Sept. 18, it resolved to further reduce the rate to 3.99 baht per unit. Continued …

Rare Bryde’s whale carcass found off Cha Am beach

The remains of a Bryde’s whale was towed by trawler to Cha Am beach, near a fishing pier in Phetchaburi province yesterday, after it was found floating at sea, about five kilometers from the shore.

Commerce Ministry revises inflation forecast amid falling prices

A security screening officer at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province has been suspended after failing to check inside a suspicious piece of luggage, which turned out to contain live animals, the airport said in a statement issued on Thursday.

M&T Computer moving, Hua Hin Mall closing

Expat News has learned that Hua Hin Mall, located just north of the municipal office on Phetkasem Road, will be closing by December. Intown residents are most familiar with the grocery store, which generally has lower prices than Makro, or with the computer repair shop.

Many of the tenants have already moved out, with M&T Computer planning to relocate by Oct. 1 across from the Malee shopping center at 5/233 Soi Village, Khlong Chonprathan Road. M&T is where many people go for computer repairs and equipment. They can be reached at 089-174-0589 or 094-985-9947.

No word yet on where, of if, the grocery or the other stores at the mall will relocate.

New “electrical” blue tarantula species found in Thailand

Entomologists in Thailand have been stunned by an electrifying new species of tarantula found in the southern part of the country.

The spider, known as the Chilobrachys natanicharum, has a “blue-violet hue resembling the color of electrical sparks,” researchers from the Entomology Museum at Khon Kaen University and the Natural History Museum of the National Science Museum said in a paper announcing the find.   • Leaving Hua Hin: 6am, 8am, 10am, 11am, 12:00, 2pm, 4pm, 5:10pm, and 6pm
  • Leaving Suvarnabhumi: 7:30am, 9:30am, 10:30am, 12:00, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm, 5pm, and 6:30pm

The VIP bus service from Hua Hin to Suvarnabhumi Airport has a new Cha Am boarding location in front of Government Savings Bank.

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets
