Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. I watch for a while, then return inside, where it takes the nocturnal serenade of an Indian nightjar to lull me back to sleep.

Here’s the really wild part. My tent is pitched in Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest national park and one of the world’s newest UNESCO heritage sites. It’s in the southwest, a £12 taxi ride from the golden beaches of the ritzy resort of Hua Hin, itself a £1 train ride from Bangkok. This could be Thailand’s most accessible, yet biodiverse, jungle experience. Continued …

One of the most common questions I am asked these days is about a potential Phuket real estate bubble. While it’s a popular buzz term, so many who ask the question don’t understand what a bubble is.

The most notable real estate bubble in recent history was the subprime housing crisis in the United States in 2007. In other sectors, there have been bubbles like the dot.com crisis of 2000 and 2018’s crypto-crash. Continued …

Thailand eyes value of durian exports of 1 trillion baht

Thailand is preparing to enact legislation that will regulate the export of young durians in an attempt to serve markets with only the highest quality fruit. The move comes in response to the growing demand for durian, particularly in China, which is increasing steadily each year.

While Thailand has long been a leader in durian exports, the emergence of competitors in ASEAN and China, who are beginning to cultivate and export durians to the market, poses a challenge. To address this, Thailand should focus on maintaining the quality of exported durians and expanding its market share. The current government’s goal is to achieve one trillion baht in durian exports in the future. Continued …

The four-day Songkran festival, held from April 12 to 15, injected around 500-600 million baht into circulation for businesses on Khaosan Road, according to Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khaosan Road Business Assn.

Climate Change Can Make Countries Vulnerable to Heat-Related Health Concerns

A report published in Communications Earth and Environment raised concerns about the impacts of rising temperatures on Southeast Asia, causing potential drought and heat-related health concerns. Hotter weather can be unbearable for communities without cooling systems, causing potential health risks.

In Thailand, a recent report noted that the country is expected to celebrate a water festival time amid the record-high temperatures. However, the unusual heat can likely threaten communities, urging them to prepare and avoid prolonged exposure to heat. Continued …

How to Experience Wildlife Responsibly When Traveling

Brought to Japan as a six-month-old baby from Thailand, the elephant Miyako has spent 50 years living in cramped, solitary confinement at the Utsunomiya Zoo about one hour outside of Tokyo.

Unlike elephants in the wild who live in extended family groups and wander for miles on a daily basis, Miyako spends her days standing listlessly on a small concrete platform amid her own feces. And when she’s not exhibited on that platform for zoo visitors, Miyako is locked in a small, dark indoor space. Continued …

Taking a dip in Hua Hin a long time ago

It is not often I can remember what I was doing five days ago let alone 55 years, but a moth-eaten diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. A brief explanation is necessary.

A few days earlier I had arrived in Thailand after an exhausting overland trip across Asia from London. With me in Bangkok was one of the traveling companions on that journey, fellow Brit Clarence Shettlesworth. We were both broke and our immediate aim was to get to Alor Satar in Malaysia where Clarence had a bank transfer awaiting. We were so low on funds we opted to hitchhike. Continued …

In his Facebook post, the prime minister wrote that he hailed a “Kapor” (a four-wheel public transport vehicle, slightly larger than a tuk-tuk) to the park to participate in the Songkran celebrations. Continued …

Severe weather alert for 36 Thai provinces amid heatwave

This alert comes amid a period of intense heat enveloping the country, with scorching temperatures and sporadic thunderstorms expected throughout the day.

The public is advised to take precautions to protect their health from the extreme heat, including avoiding prolonged outdoor activities. Continued …

April alcohol sales set to double

The CEO of Carabao Group, Sathien Sathientham, predicts that April’s alcohol sales are set to double. This increase is anticipated due to the prolonged Songkran festival and the extension of bar and pub opening hours in several areas, including Bangkok and Phuket.

Nuttapong Boontob, a board member and assistant secretary of the ThaiRoads Foundation, expressed concerns about a potential rise in road accidents as life returns to normal post-pandemic. He highlighted that road accidents tend to surge during the new year and Songkran festivals. Continued …

Report an eye-opener on Thailand’s aging population

April 13 was Songkran Day and also National Elderly Day, marked by the Songkran Festival celebrations, the traditional new year of Thais, when family members gather and pay their respects to the elders by sprinkling water on their hands while seniors give them blessing.

As Thailand moves toward a full-scale aging society, here are some interesting findings and statistics about senior citizens in Thailand from a report of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), published in January this year. Continued …

Preparing for the golden years

The government’s ability to successfully push through the draft National Elderly and Basic Pension Act to garner a first reading — the first stage of a bill’s passage — or acceptance of the principle of the bill from the House of Representatives is considered a crucial cornerstone for building a support system for Thailand’s elderly population.

The main principle is to amend the existing Act on the Elderly to change the system of providing support payments to the elderly from a “livelihood allowance” to a “pension”, so people reaching the age of 60 can receive a secure monthly income from the state. Continued …

Global gold climbs toward record after Iran’s strike against Israel

2024 the year of recovery for Thailand’s economy

The overall outlook for Thailand’s economy remains optimistic, with the tourism industry leading the way and upcoming government stimulus measures expected to provide further impetus, a senior JPMorgan Thailand executive said earlier this month.

The comments by senior country officer Marco Sucharitkul came after several financial institutions, including the Bank of Thailand, reduced Thailand’s 2024 GDP growth forecast from around 3% to 2.3%-2.7% due to weaker-than-expected export growth and declining manufacturing competitiveness. Exodus to Thailand continues after fall of Myawaddy

A stream of people, some fearing air strikes, queued at a border crossing to flee Myanmar on Friday, a day after the strategically vital town of Myawaddy near Thailand fell to anti-junta resistance that is gaining strength.

The loss of the town robs the junta, already grappling with an economy in free fall, of vital earnings from border trade, while strengthening rebel groups such as the Karen National Union (KNU) that led the assault on Myawaddy, analysts say. Continued …

Time banks: Are they the solution to Thailand’s aging crisis?

The millions of Thais heading back to their home provinces to visit elderly parents over Songkran underlines the harsh reality that many of these seniors spend most of the year all alone.

Research by Mahidol University’s Institute for Population and Social Research shows the percentage of elderly couples living alone rose from 16.9% in 2011 to 20.6% in 2017. And that figure is on course to climb to 23% by 2050. Continued …

Phuket’s ‘Russian invasion’ – they’re here to stay

The conflict in Ukraine has reached far beyond its borders, affecting not only the lives of those inside Ukraine but also on global markets and economies. Thailand, although remaining neutral on the matter has been an unexpected beneficiary of Russia’s invasion and the ongoing war.

Thailand even took advantage of the situation, extending the usual 30-day visa exemption for Russian passports to 90 days. More than 60 other countries only receive a 30-day visa exempt period (extendable for another 30 days). This favoring the Russian tourists has not gone unnoticed by just about every other country on 30-day visa exemptions. Continued …

Phi Phi Islands tackle critical water shortage

Krabi’s renowned Phi Phi Islands are currently wrestling with a critical freshwater shortage. The local governing body, Ao Nang’s tambon administration organization (TAO), is considering two primary solutions: establishing a pipeline for water provision from the mainland or resorting to seawater desalination.

Over the last few years, the absence of tap water during the tourist high season, coinciding with the dry spell, has presented a persistent problem. Phankham Kittitorakul, who presides over Ao Nang’s TAO, confirmed the receipt of a budget to explore the aforementioned options. Continued …

More welfare urged for domesticated elephants

The welfare of domesticated elephants is crucial if a negative impact on tourism is to be prevented, experts said in a recent interview. Unlike wild elephants, domesticated elephants have helped build Thailand’s economy by hauling logs since the Rattanakosin era.

The turning point in that role came when more than 50,000 logs swept by floods and landslides hit a community in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Phipun district in 1988, killing 90 residents and injuring more than 200 others. Former Agriculture Minister Sanan Kachornprasart ordered the suspension of forest concessions in response to the incident. Continued …

Dynamic solutions needed to end human/wild elephant conflict

Hua Hin water woes won’t dampen Songkran spirit

To quench concerns over water scarcity threatening the Songkran festival, Hua Hin municipality is taking swift action to ensure the festivities flow smoothly without parching tourism enthusiasm. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul, flanked by municipal bigwigs and key officials, huddled to hash out strategies to navigate the drought as the region gears up for the traditional Thai New Year festivity.

Pranburi Dam, a vital water source for Hua Hin, is dwindling at a mere 26.5% capacity, with the adjacent Phetch Dam chipping in meagerly. Yet, Mayor Wutthikul remains bullish, crediting the confidence to countermeasures being hustled into place to offset the surge in demand from hotels, resorts, and residential haunts throughout the holiday binge. Hua Hin areas expected to be most affected by water rationing

  • Communities along the western railway line, encompassing the Nong Kae community (notably Nong Kae Village and Ton Pho).
  • Chomsin Road’s southern segment post-railway crossing.
  • The vicinity of the golf course community.
  • Somor Prong community on the northern side, stretching from the irrigation canal Soi 1 to Kiang Natee Village or the wooden bridge, alongside the canal bank on the east, and from Hua Hin Soi 2 to irrigation canal Soi 24 on the west, inclusive of Petchkasem Road.
  • Eastward from Hua Hin Soi 1 to Hua Hin Soi 35, and west of Petchkasem Road from Hua Hin Soi 2 to Hua Hin Soi 40/1, covering the entire Bofai community. – HHT

Women and Songkran — A beautiful but unsafe place

When the water guns are filled and people don colorful floral printed shirts, you know it’s Songkran time. Also known as the water festival, Songkran takes pride of place among Thai festivals, as the mostly widely celebrated, the most famous, and undoubtedly the most entertaining.

But Songkran is not without its share of controversies. A survey by Suan Dusit Poll in March, found that 32.4% out of 4,011 Bangkok residents in the past three years had been sexually harassed; 57.8% of the sample group were touched on the face with chalk powder; and 14.2% did not join the water fights because they were afraid of being harassed sexually (or had experienced that and decided to stop going). Road safety concerns rise as upcountry travel surges for Songkran

Amid the Songkran holiday, a surge in upcountry travel has sparked apprehension among road safety champions, who fear a rise in road mishaps outside the designated seven dangerous days of traveling.

The seven dangerous days were initiated today and will conclude on April 17, and it is during these days that the highest incidents of road accidents are expected. Assistant National Police Chief Kornchai Klayklueng revealed that the Royal Thai Police (RTP) aims to reduce road accidents by 5% during these seven days. Continued …

Water woes

Expat News has reached out to Hua Hin authorities for more information on the planned rationing of water in the area. We have asked what subdistricts are affected and whether water for businesses such as water parks, hotels, resorts and restaurants will also be rationed.

We have not received a response, but will alert you once we learn more.

What people say (ignorantly) about other countries

Wherever you live, you’ve heard people make some wild comments about your country. Here are a few comments when asked, “What’s the most ignorant thing a tourist has said about your country?”

“‘So, I’ll be able to make it to New York in a few hours from here.’ Ma’am. You are in Southern California. You’re talking about driving to New York. That is the complete opposite side of the country and is a long way from here. You have no concept of the scale of this country. You’ll be really upset when it takes you six hours to get across Riverside County, let alone the other five days, maybe six or seven, to drive to New York. No, you cannot get to New York in a few hours without flying.”

“These were overheard in a souvenir shop in Amsterdam. Cashier: ‘That’ll be 30 euros, please.’ American tourist: ‘What’s that in real money? (Different) American tourist: ‘What do you mean you don’t accept dollars?'”

“I lived in Costa Rica for several years, working in tourism. Once, a woman said what a lovely island it was (not an island at all). Also, a woman said she was ‘going to complain to Congress’ about the state of the roads. Costa Rica is not part of the U.S., Congress has nothing to do with it.”

You really cannot make this stuff up. Have a great day! Continued tomorrow.

Water rationing – who is affected?

Are Hua Hin restaurants, hotels and water parks also on water restrictions?

While the news today of severe water restrictions for Hua Hin residents was not unexpected (if you follow the news), it has caused some chaos among residents and businesses alike.

According to initial reports, the Waterworks Department of Hua Hin Municipality has announced the water supply will be rationed effective immediately, a measure that highlights the severity of the ongoing water shortage affecting the area.

Residents will have access to public water only between the hours of 5am and 10:30am until further notice. The report did not say when “immediately” means, since the water was still on this afternoon.

The notice, however, did not explain if all areas of Hua Hin will be affected, nor did it say whether the rationing applies to just residences. Are businesses, such as restaurants, also being rationed from 10:30am to 5am the next morning? What about hotels? Are water parks included?

These are questions we have asked city officials. We hope for an answer but are not optimistic, but we’re sure there will be some clarity eventually.

What people say (ignorantly) about other countries

Wherever you live, you’ve heard people make some wild comments about your country. Here are a few comments when asked, “What’s the most ignorant thing a tourist has said about your country?”

“In Thailand, people berate locals for eating Italian food because Thai food is ‘so tasty.’ Boo, Thai people eat Thai food every day. Going out for Italian is like you going out for Thai food in your home country.”

“I was talking to a lady in a bar in NYC once and told her I grew up in Malaysia and she genuinely asked me ‘Do you guys use money there or trade stuff?'”

“Someone compared Canadian money to Monopoly money and then asked if we had Monopoly in Canada.”

You really cannot make this stuff up. Have a great week! Continued tomorrow.

Air conditioners a hot item

Scorching heat and air pollution are driving sales of air conditioners and air purifiers this year in Thailand. The steady growth of the local real estate market is another factor contributing to the industry expansion.

Varut Lekajirakul, assistant general manager of marketing at Siam Daikin Sales Co., the local distributor of Daikin air conditioners, said sweltering temperatures could drive the air conditioner market to exceed 30 billion baht this year, 20% growth from 2023. Continued …

Betting on the future

Opposition parties came out strongly against legalization, put forward by the Pheu Thai-led government, noting that legalization wouldn’t eliminate illegal gambling and the tax revenue could be insignificant based on studies in other countries. Continued …

Report Pinpoints Pivotal Role Of Travel and Tourism In Asia-Pacific

Robust domestic demand, and travel and tourism are the two major factors contributing to the post-Covid economic recovery of the Asia-Pacific region, according to the flagship annual report of the UN Economic and Social Commission for the Asia-Pacific.

The report notes that although GDP growth has resumed, multiple risks loom large, such as a staggering debt burden, the Chinese economic slowdown, impact of conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and the cost of adjusting to upcoming megatrends such as aging populations, climate change and technological disruptions. Thai-US partnership to inject vitality into EEC healthcare

A joint venture is underway between Thailand and the United States, aimed at boosting investments within the healthcare and medical sectors in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). ‘Chinese products unlikely to affected’ by Thai 7% VAT on online imports

The Thai government’s decision to levy a 7% value-added tax (VAT) on goods imported online worth one baht or more beginning in May would not affect e-commerce products from China, Narongsak Putthapornmongkol, president of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said on Friday. Thailand had been exempting VAT for online imported goods priced at less than 1,500 baht per parcel.

Narongsak said that the 7% tax was reasonable and would not affect customers’ decision, as Chinese products sold via online channels already have affordable prices. Continued …

Assessing Thailand’s Massive Cannabis Market Reality

The Thai cannabis market is currently a full-blown recreational model, and it has exploded quicker than any market in legal cannabis history. The only comparable markets would be California 15 years ago and maybe New York in the last year — with steroids added.

Thailand has over 12,000 licensed dispensaries, not including untold numbers of unlicensed vendors. California, which had nearly 3,000 unlicensed dispensaries at the start of its adult-use cannabis market and thousands in New York City within months of decriminalization, comparably pales to Thailand’s growth. Cannabis rules must make sense

It’s quite a relief that Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew is ruling out the recriminalization of cannabis.

Chiang Mai’s Choking Haze

The name Chiang Mai once conjured images of lush mountains, vibrant temples, and a laid-back atmosphere. Now, it’s synonymous with another word: pollution. Every year, a toxic cloud descends upon the city, transforming it into a gasping, coughing mess.

Air-quality levels regularly nosedive into the “hazardous” zone, forcing tourists to flee and locals to live in fear of what they’re breathing in. So, what’s to blame for this environmental nightmare? Continued …

Tourism affected as Chiang Mai chokes on toxic PM dust

Songkran in Chiang Mai is unlikely to be as lively as expected. The fault lies with a surplus of PM 2.5 dust, which is having a negative effect on tourist confidence, especially among Thais.
