La Nina to bring more rain to Thailand until next year

Laboratory tests of 191 Mpox patients in Thailand have found that the viruses are of Clade 2 strain, presenting in eight subvariants, with C.1 subvariant found in most cases in the Kingdom, the Department of Medical Sciences said on Monday.

Thailand’s dominant subvariant C.1 of Clade 2 strain is different than the one currently spreading in Africa, which is the original strain from Clade 1 and has now evolved into Clade 1b, he said, adding that the Clade 1b strain is more easily transmissible and can infect anyone in close proximity to a patient in just four hours. NESDC releases report on Thailand’s economic performance

Small and medium-sized herbal business operators will be given help to improve their products for export, following sluggish domestic sales due to weak consumer spending, which could lead to factory shutdowns, says the Herbal Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

A week on Thailand’s Koh Samui and Koh Phangan islands provided a great escape from a cold and sometimes wet winter without having to stress about the lawn getting out of control, as well as a complete break from New Zealand’s eternal debates in the media about everything that’s wrong in this country.

I hadn’t realised just how depressing exposure to politicians indulging in puerile arguments and constant whining on radio, TV and in the papers can be. Soldier shot, killed at soi 80 bar

A disagreement Sunday morning at an unlicensed Soi 80 Hua Hin pub led to the fatal shooting of Sgt. Major Rojchanaphon Rojchanaphanit, an intelligence officer at Thanarat Camp. The commotion at Tiny Club saw police commissioner Jakkrit Worawongphanitkul allegedly pulling a 9 mm. pistol, fatally shooting Punch and injuring two other patrons.

At approximately 4 am , Hua Hin Police Station received a report about a dispute turning violent in the Tiny Club on Soi Hua Hin 80. Responders, including high-ranking officers and forensic teams, quickly arrived at the chaotic scene littered with broken bottles and a large pool of blood. Continued …

Thai window cleaner falls to death from 31st floor of Bangkok hotel

A Thai window cleaner fell to his death on Saturday after his scaffold gondola platform collapsed and plummeted from the 31st floor of a hotel in Soi Sukhumvit 24, Bangkok.

A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. Heavy rain warning for three Thai regions

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rain in three regions, with the northern region expected to face 70% rainfall. Bangkok will experience heavy showers from afternoon to evening.

Tax gain from casino legalization ‘not worth it’

Several parties have criticized the government’s proposed bill to allow casinos to operate legally within entertainment complexes in the country, saying that tax revenue gained from casinos would not be worth the ensuing social problems.

A source from the Finance Ministry said this week that the draft of the Entertainment Complex Act is in the final stretch and set to undergo a public hearing this month. The draft stipulates that entertainment complex operators must register as a company in Thailand with registered capital of at least 10 billion baht. The southern dual-track route from Nakhon Pathom to Chumphon covering 421 kilometers was opened to passengers on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said.

Weather office says La Nina already under way

Thailand’s revolutionary plastic road

Thailand’s Department of Rural Roads is planning to use a revolutionary asphalt grade for repairs to the road connecting Muang District with Nakhon Ratchasima Airport. Recycled plastic waste will be used in the asphalt mix for the 3km road stretch. Work on the section of Highway No 3140 will commence in the third quarter of 2024 and continue until the third quarter of 2025.

Team Mitsubishi To Compete in Asia Cross Country Rally in Hua Hin

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will be taking on the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2024 scheduled for Aug. 11 to 17. In this competition, which will be held in southern and central Thailand, the team will be driving four Triton1 pickup trucks, aiming to reclaim the title after two years.

A total of 67 vehicles will compete in this year’s AXCR – 46 in the auto category, 19 in the moto category, and 2 in the sidecar category. The rally proper begins with Leg 1 on Aug. 12. Leg 2 is the longest section of the competition, traveling from Surat Thani to Hua Hin, and is expected to be challenging, with large ruts and rock debris on the road surface. Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. Continued …

New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe. Heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash 39 provinces across Thailand, with severe weather warnings issued for potential flash floods and runoff. Bangkok is also bracing for significant rainfall, with 70% of the area anticipated to be affected.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, mostly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. China’s demographics alone – even if you ignore its increasing marginalization from global trade, its dependency on food and energy imports, and President Xi Jinping’s utter gutting of the bureaucracy of anyone who might bring him accurate but unwelcome news – could collapse its economy in the coming decades. In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. Pickup truck loan defaults surge 39% in May

The National Credit Bureau (NCB) reported a significant 39% increase in bad debt for pickup truck loans in May, highlighting an alarming trend in the auto finance sector.

The government’s backtracking from its plan to relist cannabis as a narcotic drug is a step in the right direction. The reversal was ordered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin just days before a meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB).

Cannabis advocates praised the decision, ending a 10-day protest by advocacy group Writing Thailand’s Cannabis Future near Government House. Instant coffee market set for 5% growth

Thailand’s instant coffee market is expected to grow by 5% this year as Nescafé Thailand plans to allocate 620 million baht for brand communication advertising.

Jojo Dela Cruz, business executive officer of Nestlé (Thai) Ltd.’s coffee and creamer business unit, said that in this year’s first quarter the value of the country’s instant coffee market was 5.7 billion baht, up 5% when compared with the corresponding period last year, while the value of the ready-to-drink coffee market reached 3.8 billion baht, up 10% from the corresponding period last year. People were being invited to experience romantic vibes in the rainy season on a special Kiha 183 tourism train, which will make 16 trips on seven routes in August and September. Thailand saw a surge in investment project proposals, led by electrical appliances and electronics, during the first half of 2024, with total proposals soaring by 64% year-on-year, worth 458 billion baht, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Months-long sluggish car sales have caused the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) to reduce its car manufacturing target for 2024 to 1.7 million units, down from 1.9 million units.

New Post-Graduate Visa for Foreign Students Implemented

Starting July 15, the Thai government has implemented the Non-Ed Plus Visa, which will allow foreign students studying bachelor’s degree level or above to extend their stay in Thailand for one year after graduation to give them time to find employment, travel, participate in other similar activities, or apply for a new type of visa once employed.
