The Tour de Thailand 2024 will take place from the Jan. 8-15. The tour includes a trip down to Chumphon and ends in Hua Hin for a total of 783 km spread over the eight days.

190 Killed In New Year Holiday Road Accidents So Far

With four days of New Year holidays having now passed, as many as 190 people have been killed in 1,570 accidents nationwide, while 1,574 were injured, and it was Kanchanaburi where the highest number of accidents occurred, while Bangkok recorded the most fatalities.

Covid-19 cases reach nearly 6,000 a day

The number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand has been on the rise in recent weeks, reaching nearly 6,000 cases per day on Jan. 2, the highest reported caseload since August 2023.

According to a Facebook post by Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine Associate Professor Thira Woratanarat, the increase in cases is due to the spread of the Omicron subvariant BA.2.86.xBA.5, which is more transmissible than previous variants. Continued …

Six tour boats and a fishing vessel have sunk in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea in the past four days. Two passengers, a skipper and five crew are still missing.

Seventy Three Tourists Rescued after Speedboat Capsized in Satun

A tourist speedboat capsized near Bubu Island, about 3 kilometers from Satun’s Lipe Island, Sunday. The boat carried 73 tourists, including three children and four crew members.

A passenger van with a Bangkok license plate collided with a rice-harvesting truck with a Phetchaburi license plate yesterday morning on Petchaburi Road (southbound) in Phetchaburi Province, seriously injuring two foreign tourists.

The Cabinet has resolved to cap the price of diesel and electricity for households in a bid to ease people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

Srettha, who also doubles as finance minister, said under the measure proposed by the Energy Ministry, diesel will be retailed at no more than 30 baht per liter for three months, while the price of electricity for households using less than 300 units per month will be capped at no more than 4.2 baht per unit. Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Board of Investment, which controls the LTR, says about 3,000 such visas were issued since the launch in 2022, but the publicity surrounding the new tax regulation has seen a 14% rise in applications. Continued …

Telco regulator asked to review True’s service charges and quality

Four members of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, have proposed that the commission consider the service charges and quality of True Corp. after the successful merger of Total Access Communications Co. (DTAC) and True Corp. (TRUE) in March this year.

The Energy Business Department will seek Cabinet endorsement for discontinuing the sale of B10 diesel oil, leaving only B7 and B20 oil options available, the department’s chief said.

A recent report from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) revealed that efforts to address poverty and inequality in Thailand have not been entirely successful. Foreigners Purchase 10,703 Condo Units in Thailand This Year

Vichai Wiratkapan, acting director of the Real Estate Information Center (REIC), said that in the third quarter of 2023 the number of condominiums in Thailand transferred to foreigners was 3,365, an increase of 0.4%.

Bangkok struggles with escalating PM2.5 levels

Bangkok is grappling with a severe rise in PM2.5 levels, necessitating immediate intervention from the government. Nearly 29 of the city’s 50 districts have recorded PM2.5 concentrations surpassing 35 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3), making the air unfit for breathing.

Hazardous smog moves to north, west

The levels of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, reached dangerous levels in parts of the north and the western region this morning, while Samut Songkhram was the only province in the red zone, indicating PM2.5 readings exceeded the acceptable standard of 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 9am today that the central province of Samut Songkhram, located west of Bangkok, recorded 77.1 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Continued …

NEPC plans to cap power tariff for Thai households at current rate

The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), in its recent meeting, moved to limit the power tariff for households consuming not more than 300 units a month at the existing rate of 3.99 baht per unit, an insider familiar with the meeting discussions revealed.

In the NEPC meeting, led by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, two main points were reviewed, both related to the proposed tariff of 4.68 baht per unit for the period of January to April of the upcoming year. The Thai government should expedite its efforts to retrieve Thai artifacts stolen from Si Thep historical park in Phetchabun province and currently held in the United States, said Phanombootra Chandrajoti, director general of the Fine Arts Department.

ADB cuts Thailand’s 2023 economic growth forecast to 2.5%

Increases to the daily minimum wage are unlikely to have a substantial effect on the domestic prices of goods and services, insisted the Commerce Ministry’s planning unit.

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), said the analysis conducted by the office on the impact of the minimum wage adjustment by the tripartite wage committee on inflation showed an average daily minimum wage increase of 2.37% to 345 baht would lead to a modest uptick in inflation, about 0.13–0.25%. PM2.5 crisis first major test for Srettha’s government

The air pollution crisis in Thailand, specifically the hazardous PM2.5 particles, presents a formidable challenge to new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his cabinet. This issue transcends mere environmental concerns, morphing into a litmus test for the government’s commitment to public health and its willingness to confront entrenched industrial and agricultural interests.

PM2.5 particles are fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are so small that they can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing serious health risks. 33 provinces still blanketed by thick smog

Dangerous levels of ultrafine dust covered 33 of the 77 provinces this morning, an improvement on 47 provinces on Tuesday morning, and the peak pollution level was also down.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 9am today that red levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) covered five provinces in the Central Plain, compared with 15 provinces on Tuesday morning. Continued …

Tackling scams: Phone numbers exceeding 100 calls per day to be suspended

In a bid to combat call scams, the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry has announced that any telephone number with more than 100 calls per day will be suspended.

Baht weakens to 35.71/dollar as US announces better job figures

The baht slipped to 35.71 per U.S. dollar at the start of trading on Tuesday following improved labor figures in the U.S. The Thai currency had closed at 35.32 per dollar on Friday.

Gulf Energy CEO remains Thailand’s richest man for 5th consecutive year

Sarath Ratanavadi, CEO of Gulf Energy, Thailand’s third largest energy producer, is Thailand’s richest man for the fifth year in a row, with a net worth of 190.8-billion baht, mostly in shareholdings in Stock Exchange of Thailand listed companies, according to the Money and Banking magazine’s December edition.

Cabinet delays decision on minimum daily wage increase

Though Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn presented the new minimum daily wage rates to the Cabinet on Tuesday, he admitted that they need to be reconsidered and revised.

The rates were set by a tripartite committee comprising representatives of employers, employees and the government sector. The committee resolved on Friday to increase the daily minimum wage nationwide within the range of 330 to 370 baht based on provinces from Jan. 1 onward. It’s 5:50am and I’m in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand, following a single-file column of russet-robed monks as they tread barefoot down the red-dirt road that runs between their monastery and the nearby village. Top cop Gen.Surachate Hakparn on Wednesday confirmed disciplinary action and a criminal investigation against two senior police officers in Pattaya in response to the shocking Deutsche Welle TV documentary on the country’s sex industry aired days ago. He also named the 55-year-old German suspect charged with the sexual assault of a minor under 18 years of age, 55-year-old Jens Kirch, as the man at the center of the story who skipped bail after his arrest in September 2022.

Thai rice varieties will no longer enter world’s best rice competition

Thailand did not participate in the World’s Best Rice 2023 competition, held during the International World Rice Commission in Cebu, the Philippines, and will not do so in the coming years, Chukiat Opaswongse, honorary president of Thai Rice Exporters Assn. (TREA), said yesterday.

His announcement came one day after Vietnam’s rice variety, ST25, was voted the best rice variety of the 30 varieties submitted for competition. Thailand’s tourism revenue falls short of annual target

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has projected a shortfall in its annual tourism revenue target, with this year’s earnings expected to reach 2.07 trillion baht (US$ 58,773,427,200) instead of the projected 2.38 trillion baht (US$ 67,575,244,800).

Bt7.9-billion budget for sugarcane farmers to reduce pollution

The buying price of gold bars in the country stands at 33,850 baht per baht-weight and the selling price is 33,950 baht per baht-weight, according to the sixth announcement of the day. Meanwhile, the purchase price for 96.5% gold ornaments is 33,245.88 baht per baht-weight, selling at 34,450 baht per baht-weight. The Notification of the Ministry of Industry on Management of Waste or Unused Materials B.E. 2566 (2023), enacted under the Factory Act B.E. 2535 (1992), marks a pivotal shift in the responsibilities and liabilities of factory operators as waste generators, which under the new notification no longer end when the waste is collected by a third-party waste processor.
