The government aims to reduce hotspots by 25% this dry season compared to last year to mitigate air pollution, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong.

Rain is predicted in Bangkok and its vicinity until Monday, according to the Meteorological Department. The agency on Friday issued a 10-day weather forecast, highlighting varying conditions nationwide.

Another leopard spotted in Kaeng Krachan park

A leopard was spotted wandering around a helipad in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, believed to be waiting for its prey. Mongkol Chaipakdee, chief of the national park, said on Friday that park staff in the Ban Krang area observed the male leopard near the helipad.

World’s second-largest solar power plant goes online

China’s CHN Energy has connected the Mengxi Lanhai solar power plant (SPP) with a capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW) to the grid. Residents of the Phuket Villa 3 housing estate in Wichit found themselves in disarray yesterday when a staggering swarm of “norn pradu” worms descended upon their community. Thailand is targeting economic growth of 3.5% in 2025 after 2.7% growth seen this year, and the government will soon consider more stimulus measures and the rollout of phase two of its US$14 billion handout scheme, the finance minister said on Wednesday.

Global EV sales up 35%

Thai Exports Continued to Grow in September

In September, Thailand’s exports totaled USD25,983.2 million, reflecting a modest year-over-year growth of 1.1%. This growth slowed from the previous month’s 7% and fell short of analysts’ expectations of 2.9%.

Notably, the total export value for the first three quarters of the year reached USD223,176 million, indicating a 3.9% growth on a customs basis. Loy Krathong expected to draw 36% more flights than last year

Flight bookings to Thailand are expected to surge by 36% during the Loy Krathong festival, which falls on Friday, government deputy spokesman Karom Polpornklang said on Monday.

According to an Aeronautical Radio of Thailand forecast, 73,500 flights, or 2,450 flights a day, are expected in November, up 36% year on year. Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Carden clarified that only overseas income transferred to Thailand is relevant for taxation. Issues like pre-taxed pensions and double taxation treaties should also be considered. Continued …

Ministry to ease blow of fuel subsidy ending

The Energy Ministry is planning to launch measures to soften the impact of expiring biofuel price subsidies in 2027, as the fuels become more expensive, affecting palm and sugar cane growers.

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Thailand’s digital economy continues to record strong double-digit growth, fueled by the rise of e-commerce, particularly video commerce and online travel services. In 2024, the country’s digital economy is expected to grow 19% over last year to US$46 billion on the basis of gross merchandise value (GMV).

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. Get ready for a dramatic weather shift as northern and northeastern Thailand is set to feel a temperature dip over the next 24 hours, while the southern regions, including Bangkok, face heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

LNG prices to keep power bills stable

Inflation up in Octpber, below forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.83% in October from a year earlier, the Commerce Ministry said today, remaining below the Bank of Thailand’s target range for inflation of 1% to 3%.

Thailand welcomes 29 million tourists, expects more as high season kicks in

Thailand has welcomed more than 29.08 million foreign tourists, generating approximately 1.358 trillion baht in revenue from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year.

According to statistics from the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chinese tourists topped the list of arrivals with over 5.75 million, followed by tourists from Malaysia (4.18 million), India (1.72 million), South Korea (1.53 million), and Russia (1.3 million) during the period. Continued …

Domestic tourists up 9% YOY, but likely to miss Bt1-trillion revenue goal

The number of domestic travelers in the first nine months of this year crossed 148.02 million person-trips, increasing 8.98% year on year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Tuesday. These travelers have generated income to local tourism businesses at around 702.52 billion baht, increasing 12.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, it said.

TAT estimated that total domestic tourists this year could exceed 200 million person-trips, and could even reach 230 million, said Nithee Seeprae, deputy governor for marketing communications. Continued …

Thailand looks to China’s small nuclear reactor for low-carbon energy

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has unveiled more details of its plan for small modular nuclear reactors, aimed at upgrading the country’s energy stability, paving the way for carbon neutrality and keeping power-generation costs low.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) will help cut carbon emissions, as well as electricity costs, EGAT Gov. Thepparat Theppitak said on Monday. Smaller and more flexible than traditional nuclear power plants, an SMR can produce up to 300 megawatts of electricity (MWe), versus over 1,000 MWe produced by large plants. Continued …

Illegal Chinese-owned recycling plant raided, over 41.5 tons of toxins found

Thai police raided a Chinese-owned recycling plant in Prachinburi province on Monday, seizing over 41.5 tons of hazardous waste, officials said.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), in conjunction with the Department of Industrial Works, conducted the raid after receiving complaints from local residents about the illegal operation of three factories in the area, despite one having its license revoked and the other two being ordered to close due to a lack of permits. Midsummer, Saab sign pact for 200 MW solar plant in Thailand

Sweden’s solar energy company Midsummer AB and defense firm Saab AB have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the aim of establishing a long-term partnership in Thailand, which includes the development of a 200-MW facility to produce thin film solar cells.

The MoU aims to establish a long-term, comprehensive framework to explore and identify potential activities for industrial cooperation in Thailand and other export markets. The focus will be on solar energy manufacturing and technology, a core element of Midsummer’s expertise. Continued …

Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. Furthermore, the poll revealed that 55% of respondents had considered traveling out of Thailand during 2024 to avoid a tax liability.

Heavy rain and flash flood warnings for southern Thailand

Heavy rain is set to lash the southern regions of Thailand, prompting the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) to issue warnings of flash floods and overflowing mountain streams in 10 provinces. Meanwhile, the northern areas will experience a drop in temperatures.

High blood pressure was the top medical condition among universal healthcare service outpatients in 2023, according to Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO).

M16 rifle linked to over 25 deaths in southern Thailand

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. The NESDC Office explained that living in their own houses also counted as a cost poor families did not have to bear. Continued …

Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

The company’s managing director, Kessara Thanyalakpark, said that rising household debt was among factors that hurt Bangkokians’ ability to purchase houses. “Currently, there is a disconnect between the demand for housing and the high prices set by property developers,” she said. Continued …

Foreign investment in Thailand rallied 60% to 134 billion baht in value for the first nine months of this year, with Japan continuing to top the list of source countries, a government spokesman said on Sunday.

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. In the first nine months, Thailand’s imports amounted to $229.1328 billion, a 5.5% increase, resulting in a trade deficit of $5.9568 billion, or nearly 200 billion baht. Continued …

One issue the private sector has urged the government to address is the continuous influx of Chinese goods into Thailand, which significantly impacts 23 industry groups, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Foundation documents impact of plastic waste in Thailand

Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Chiang Mai Authority has backed a Thai-Chinese waste-to-energy power plant that is expected to take two years to complete. The joint investment agreement, valued at 2.3 billion baht, was signed on Friday.

Fiscal 2024’s figures saw a dip in OFFO’s losses, thanks to reduced outlays on domestic diesel subsidies. Thailand boosts climate resilience in coastal areas with UN grant

Thailand is enhancing its capacity to tackle the escalating threat of climate change, particularly in its marine and coastal areas. This initiative, a collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is titled “Increasing Resilience to Climate Change Impacts in Marine and Coastal Areas along the Gulf of Thailand”, and is supported by a US$3 million (101.2 million baht) grant from the Green Climate Fund.

Developing countries begin to say no to waste colonialism from developed nations

Despite China’s ban on solid waste imports three years ago, developed countries continue to exploit regulatory loopholes to export waste to developing countries, including China, avoiding higher recycling costs at home. Other developing countries, such as those in Southeast Asia, alongside China, have increasingly restricted foreign waste imports, but this has not halted the practice.

A key driver of this issue is the profitability and low risk of waste trafficking. Developed countries, aiming to cut costs, use “waste colonialism” as a tactic, exporting plastic and other low-value waste, Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs says. The Thailand Consumers Council is urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take legal action against importers of Shine Muscat grapes after lab tests showed some samples were contaminated with chemicals that are banned in Thailand.

According to TCC, 23 out of 24 Shine Muscat grape samples tested by the council last week were found to be contaminated with hazardous chemical residues beyond the acceptable legal limit. Explosion at Thai zinc factory kills 2 Burmese workers, injures 28

A devastating explosion at a zinc production facility in Kabin Buri district, Prachinburi, has left two Burmese workers dead and 28 others injured. Tourism Levy will take at least six months to implement even after a cabinet decision

Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Surawong Thienthong, last week again committed the government to introducing the long-awaited foreign tourist levy. The measure has divided the foreign tourism industry in Thailand. New tourism tax won’t affect foreign residents or workers

Phuket’s office of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MoTS) has confirmed that the upcoming tourism tax, expected to be implemented early next year, will not impact foreigners who reside or work in Thailand.

A MoTS Phuket official clarified that the proposed tax has not yet been presented to the Cabinet for approval. “We should wait for any further information because now the tourist tax has not yet gone to Cabinet, and some things may change once it goes into Cabinet,” the official stated. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says transboundary hydropower dam projects along the Mekong River pose a risk to Thailand’s environment, economy and community safety.

In a letter submitted to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the NHRC said it had outlined its concerns regarding four hydropower dam projects: the Ban Koum Dam, the Sanakham Dam, the Phou Ngoy Dam and the Pak Chom Dam, all on the Lower Mekong along the Thai-Lao border. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rain in 24 provinces and urging vigilance regarding the powerful tropical storm Trami. Northern Thailand will experience cool weather and strong winds, while the southern seas will see high waves.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, particularly in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Cambodian-Thai trade up 10%, tops US$3 billion Jan-Sept

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand continues as usual, reaching over US$3.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, an increase of more than 10% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, after China, the U.S. and Vietnam, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

GDCE statistics show that from January to September, total trade between Cambodia and Thailand amounted to $3.169 billion, up 12.4% from the same period in 2023. Continued …

IMF forecasts 3.2% global growth for 2024-25, with Thailand trailing ASEAN

The global war against inflation has largely been won — and at surprisingly little cost to economic growth, the International Monetary Fund declared Tuesday.

In its latest assessment of the global economy, the IMF predicted that worldwide inflation will cool from 6.7% last year to 5.8% this year and to 4.3% in 2025. It estimates that inflation will fall even faster in the world’s wealthy countries, from 4.6% last year to 2.6% this year and 2% — the target range for most major central banks — in 2025. Tweaks needed for northern Thailand tourism project

The new co-payment tourism promotion program for northern destinations in Thailand will need an upgrade in terms of both the amount of subsidies from the government and number of tourists to receive them, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.

Thailand has reported 26.08 million arrivals in the nine-month Jan.-Sept. 2024 period, up 30.09% over the same period of 2023. A deeper analysis shows how the country is benefiting from both internal peace and external conflicts as it seeks to safeguard the role of tourism as an economic mainstay in the second year of post-Covid recovery.

It had been earlier hoped, although not targeted, that arrivals would hit the 40 million mark of pre-Covid 2019. The bars were targeted following an extensive investigation based on intelligence reports that indicated illegal activities were taking place behind the facade of normal bar operations.

The Department of Rural Roads under the Thai Ministry of Transport has completed the first of the four phases of the 950km coastal road (Riviera) project, which spans 12 provinces from Samut Prakan to Narathiwat.

New stimulus efforts readied

The Finance Ministry is preparing additional stimulus measures, including plans to promote tourism and encourage spending toward the end of the year, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.
