Military’s business activities in the crosshairs

Race courses, boxing stadiums, golf courses, hotels, and radio and television stations are thought to be significant revenue streams for the armed forces and are commonly referred to as off-budget funds. Continued …

Thailand’s economic challenge: short-term relief vs long-term structural woes

The 5-2 vote by the Thai central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to hold the key policy rate at 2.50% is a hint of an impending rate cut at their next meeting, according to some economists. The MPC decision in January disappointed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his aides, who had been forcefully arguing for the rate cut.

Srettha, who is also finance minister, said that he could not interfere with the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s independence. Two of the MPC members voted for a rate cut because inflation has been negative and economic growth has slowed down. Continued …

Thai 2023 GDP expands at 1.9%, slower than expected

Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 1.9% in 2023, the National Social and Economic Development Council (NESDC) said today, as higher tourist numbers and private consumption were undercut by falls in manufacturing and public spending.

The weaker-than-expected growth raises the case for an interest rate cut at the Bank of Thailand’s next policy review on April 10, after it left the key rate steady at 2.50%, the highest in more than a decade, in a split vote. Continued …

Medical Coverage For Foreigners Won’t Apply to Many Incidents

Last week, the Thai government announced something that seemed to go under the radar of many of our readers and the media, perhaps drowned out a bit by the parole of Thaksin Shinawatra or never-ending U-turns on the status of the cannabis draft law.

(Editor: We have to take exception to the news being “drowned out” in the media. Thailand providing health insurance for foreign tourists has been reported almost everywhere around the world.)

That something is medical coverage for foreign tourists, with some conditions. Get a recap of the official press release from the Thai government PR department here before reading further if you aren’t sure what we are referring to. Continued …

Bangkok airport battles long queues, faulty tech

Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand’s busiest, is facing daily traffic congestion as vehicles compete for parking spaces. The problem is compounded by long queues at immigration and baggage claim areas due to inoperative kiosks and staff shortages.

Tourist complaints prompted an unannounced visit from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who has since ordered airport authorities to quicken procedures to under 30 minutes per passenger. As the country welcomed 3.03 million foreign visitors last month, a rise from the previous year’s 2.1 million, the pressure on airports has increased significantly. Continued …

This defiance comes amid a larger crisis, with 250 firefighters deployed and 1,600 hectares of precious forest land already consumed by flames. Continued …

Slow economic growth, lack of foreign investment are major challenges

Thailand’s biggest economic challenge is that its economy has been growing at a slower pace, about 3% per annum, than Malaysia and China, at about 5% annually, because it lacks the ability to attract foreign investors, according to Kobsak Pootrakool, executive vice president of the Bangkok Bank and a respected economist.

If the slow growth persists much longer, Thailand will lose the status of being the economic leader in the region, which would be a big problem, but not an economic crisis like the “tom yum kung” debacle in 1997, he said. Continued …

Doing good can give a business competitive edge

It seems counter-intuitive, but in a capitalist economy, doing the most good can provide a competitive edge.

I am not referring to businesses that donate a tiny percentage of their profits to charities or tell you that they are reducing greenhouse gas emissions. I am talking about businesses that donate 100% of their profits — or close to it — to effective charities that do a lot of good. Continued …

Why Bangkok is a messy pot of inequality and dysconnectivity

One can experience the heights of human material achievements inside luxury malls, condos, hotels, offices, and supercars. Step outside, and it’s a different world. One would cough up dust, skip over potholes, dodge construction tools dropping down from above, run after buses, sidestep speeding motorbikes, look left and right warily at road crossings as if about to enter a war zone, and always have some cash in hand in case the police stopped you for any reason.

Privileged children spend their lives inside chauffeured vans, eyes glued to their iPads, while outside, unfortunate children try to sell flowers to apathetic drivers, who avert their gaze and move their cars away. Towering high-rises stand next to the poorest slums. The finest European sportscar races past some makeshift crossbreed of a motorbike and a wagon. Continued …

Economic crisis feared amid digital wallet dispute

The Bank of Thailand and the government have been at odds for months, with tensions escalating last week when the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept interest rates at 2.5% despite political pressure for a reduction. This disagreement came to the fore during discussions about the digital wallet scheme, a 560-billion-baht (US$15.58 billion) project that the central bank has urged caution over.

A poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) revealed that 68.8% of respondents wouldn’t be upset if the project was abandoned, while Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai remains committed to the scheme. He argued it is essential for reviving the economy and warned that a crisis akin to the 1997 Tom Yam Kung crisis could occur without some form of stimulus. Continued …

In a lecture at this year’s joint meeting of the Association of Thai Travel Agents and the Thai Hotels Assn. , Professor Dr. Piti Srisangnam, head of the ASEAN Foundation, cited “de-dollarization” as one of “6D” trends that will shake up travel and tourism, the other five being decoupling/derisking of the global value chains, deglobalization, destabilization, the digital divide, and degradation of environment.

The lecture is set to reset the content of industry discourse, in Thailand and beyond. 8-year-old becomes the youngest to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand

Water sports history was written yesterday when eight-year-old Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen became the youngest to windsurf 107 kilometers (66 miles) across the Gulf of Thailand – a claim to fame he most wanted as a gift for his ninth birthday this coming Sunday. It was a case of “third time lucky” for Shane, whose two previous attempts at the epic crossing were scuppered by poor wind conditions.

The boy wonder achieved his kite foil crossing in just four hours and 10 minutes – the fastest time yet for windsurfers of any age. He even beat the four hours and 45 minutes crossing time recorded by a jetskier. Thailand’s wee windsurfing wizard was flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and landed at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

The best time of day to release mosquitoes in northern Australia is midmorning. Later in the day, winds might sweep the insects away and dash any hope that they will find a mate. Earlier than that, the workers who drive around and release containers full of mosquitoes would have to get overtime pay.

And so, on a sweltering January morning at the height of the Australian summer, I climbed into my white van with thousands of mosquitoes stowed in Tupperware cups on the back seat. Continued …
