PAT sterilizes and vaccinates over 1,500 street animals in Cha Am this year

People & Animals Thailand (PAT), an initiative under the umbrella of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, is making strides in the battle against street animal overpopulation and the spread of rabies in the region.

Since the beginning of the year, PAT has treated over 1,500 animals at its state-of-the-art sterilization and vaccination clinic situated between Hua Hin and Cha Am. Continued …

Petrol prices to drop by 2.50 baht as new year gift

The deputy prime minister and minister of energy announced plans to reduce petrol prices by 2.50 baht per liter as a new year’s gift to the Thai people. The minister, Peeraphan Saleerathaviphak, also revealed the establishment of an official committee to investigate fuel pricing.

Peeraphan revealed that the Ministry of Energy is considering ways to reduce petrol prices to help the public with cost of living expenses, comparing this with previous reductions in diesel prices. He highlighted that the idea is to offer a new year’s gift to the people of Thailand. Continued …

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

The announcement appears to clearly state that VAT will be collected at 6.3%, reduced from 7%. But is this true or is there more to it than meets the eye? Continued …

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. The higher cost of imports from the weak baht impacts the production costs and prices of Thai products, affecting the competitiveness of Thai exports. Continued …

Late king, Rama IX, remembered in Hua Hin

Over a thousand people yesterday attended ceremonies honoring the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Participants carried the royal cypher of His Majesty from Phon Kingphet Public Park to Wang Klai Kangwon. Hua Hin’s blue swimming crab bank initiative honored

Hua Hin has been listed in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories for 2023 for the “blue swimming crab bank” initiative in Khao Takiab. The initiative is organized by the local fishing community of Khao Takiab and focuses on the conservation of the blue swimming crab population.

Under the initiative, any gravied female crabs caught by the local fishing fleet are released back into the sea after they are placed in a nurturing condition to spawn. From October 2018 to May 2023, the crab bank initiative released over 150 million crab larvae into the sea, representing an economic value exceeding 1,000 million THB (approximately 28.5 million USD).

The crabs are released back into the sea every morning from 9am on the beach next to Amazon Coffee in Khao Takiab,. Anyone can take part in the releasing of the crabs.

Australia is interested in investing in infrastructure development projects, water resources in particular, in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), according to Thailand’s trade representative Nalinee Taveesin.

Mama noodle maker sets out expansion plans

Thai President Foods, the manufacturer of Mama instant noodles, plans to invest more than 2 billion baht over a three-year period to expand its production capacity in response to anticipated future growth, both domestically and abroad.

Orchid Palm Homes Cup VIII set for Oct 29

Football players from all over the province will be traveling to Hua Hin to compete in the Orchid Palm Homes Cup VIII on Oct. 29. Six teams have signed up, with clubs making the journey from Pranburi, Bang Saphan and Thap Sakae.

The six-a-side tournament is set for the Black Mountain Hua Hin Football Academy and will be for Under 11 teams. This will be the eighth edition of the biannual Orchid Palm Homes Cup, which was founded in 2020. Continued …

Families of those who died in mall shooting to get Bt6.2 million compensation each

The families of the two people who were killed in the Siam Paragon shooting will each receive 6.2 million baht in compensation from the Thai government and the mall’s owners, while the injured will each receive 350,000 baht each.

Of the 6.2 million baht for the families of the Chinese and Myanmar nationals, 1.2 million baht will be from the government and the rest from the owners of the mall, who will also contribute 300,000 baht each for the injured, in addition to the 50,000 baht from the government, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol. Over the past one and a half years, a staggering 365,000 online fraud cases have been reported, inflicting a massive loss of 45 billion baht, revealed deputy government spokesperson Karom Phonphonklang.

Bangkok to procure over 2,000 electric buses in next five years

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) plans to procure 2,013 more electric buses within three to five years under a budget of around 5.5 billion baht, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Friday.

Even during rainy season, Korat water supplies ‘alarmingly low’

The amount of usable water across 27 medium-sized reservoirs across the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has dropped to alarmingly low levels despite the rainy season, raising fears of an impending drought, according to a provincial irrigation office official.

Suspected killer’s third wife arrested on murder charges relating to 4 infant boys

The third wife of the suspected serial killer, 46-year-old Songsak Songsaeng, was arrested by police on Friday on charges including murder. She appeared before the Criminal Court on Saturday in connection with the deaths of four infants between 2013 and 2018.

Jessada Meepian is the 33-year-old mother of a 12-year-old girl, Wiyada, the only surviving child out of five from the relationship between the pair who, it was revealed, on Friday, alerted authorities and activists to the murder of a two-year-old girl at the hands of Songsak and his fourth wife Sunan Nahuanin, the mother of the baby girl. M&T Computer moving, Hua Hin Mall closing

Expat News has learned that Hua Hin Mall, located just north of the municipal office on Phetkasem Road, will be closing by December. Intown residents are most familiar with the grocery store, which generally has lower prices than Makro, or with the computer repair shop.

Many of the tenants have already moved out, with M&T Computer planning to relocate by Oct. 1 across from the Malee shopping center at 5/233 Soi Village, Khlong Chonprathan Road. M&T is where many people go for computer repairs and equipment. They can be reached at 089-174-0589 or 094-985-9947.

No word yet on where, of if, the grocery or the other stores at the mall will relocate.

New “electrical” blue tarantula species found in Thailand

Entomologists in Thailand have been stunned by an electrifying new species of tarantula found in the southern part of the country.

Govt to finalize implementation of digital wallet scheme in 10 days

The details of the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme would be proposed for Cabinet approval within the next 10 days, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said yesterday.

The government is currently discussing with the Finance Ministry, the Budget Bureau, the National Economic and Social Development Council and various other state agencies. Prachuap Khiri Khan officials are asking tourists, Thai and foreign, to participate in a survey regarding potential new flight routes to and from Hua Hin Airport. The goal of the anonymous survey, according to the officials, is to tailor transportation development, particularly in aviation, to meet the exact needs and preferences of tourists.

Expat News has viewed the survey and it is meant only for tourists, not local Thai and foreign residents. It asks only about travel preferences within Thailand. International flights to and from Hua Hin are not mentioned. The survey

Thailand launches online platform for foreign tenant registration

Immigration has called for property owners and managers across Thailand to register for the new online notification platform for foreign tenants. This system, which became operational yesterday, replaces the previous one.

This digital registration demands the submission of pertinent documents, but immigration officials have guaranteed that the approval process will be automatic. Labor minister promises minimum wage hike as New Year’s gift

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn promised on Friday that the minimum daily wage would be raised by November as a “New Year’s present” for Thai workers.
