Electricity price will be cut to 4.15 baht per unit for January-April

The Ministry of Energy has agreed to cut the price of electricity by three satang, from 4.18 baht per unit to 4.15 baht, from January through April next year.

Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said the reduction is aimed at easing the burden of the cost-of-living. He thanked the Energy Regulatory Commission, PTT and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand for their cooperation in helping the people. Continued …

Q3 GDP growth camouflages weaknesses of Thai economy

Thailand’s economy grew 3% in the third quarter, exceeding market expectations, but the underlying details do not paint as encouraging a picture. IMF sees Thai GDP growth at 2.7% this year, 2.9% in 2025

Thailand’s economic growth is projected at 2.7% this year and 2.9% next year, reflecting planned fiscal stimulus measures and a pickup in public investment, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said.

Private consumption growth is expected to remain robust, boosted by government stimulus, while private investment is also projected to increase, the Washington-based IMF said in a statement on Tuesday after a staff visit to Southeast Asia’s second largest economy. Continued …

Thai factory output down 0.91% y/y in October, seen rising in 2025

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 0.91% in October from a year earlier, the industry ministry said on Wednesday, falling less than analysts’ expectations. The figure compared with a forecast fall of 1.85% for October in a Reuters poll, and followed an annual drop of 3.51% in September.

Factory output for the first 10 months of 2024 contracted 1.63% from a year earlier, and the ministry forecast it would fall 1.6% for the full year. Output has been weighed down by weaker car production and high household debt that has crimped domestic spending, the ministry said. Continued …

Jetstar plane bound for Thailand makes emergency landing at Sydney Airport

A Jetstar flight bound for Phuket had to make an emergency landing on Wednesday after a wheel was damaged during takeoff, causing a tense situation for all passengers on board.

Flight JQ27, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, landed safely at Sydney Airport just before 5pm after circling for nearly two hours to burn off and drain fuel. Thai PM and Energy Minister clash over clean energy vision

Tensions have erupted in Thailand’s government as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga lock horns over the nation’s clean energy future. A disagreement, which has reportedly been simmering for weeks, boiled over Tuesday, leading to the abrupt cancellation of a joint press conference following a National Energy Policy Board meeting.

According to Government House insiders, the PM pressed for the Energy Ministry to fast-track plans to acquire 2,000 megawatts of clean energy from private providers via the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (Direct PPA). Van crash in Thap Sakae district leaves 3 dead

In the early hours yesterday, a crash occurred on Phetkasem Road Huai Yang subdistrict, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan. A red-plate Toyota van used for transporting a psychiatric patient collided with the rear of a trailer truck, resulting in three fatalities and one injury.

The accident happened at approximately 2: am just 2 kilometers before Wanakorn Beach National Park. The van used by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) to transport a psychiatric patient for treatment in Nakhon Pathom was returning to Chumphon when the crash occurred. Continued …

New Zealand citizen poisoned by tainted alcohol in Laos returns home

A New Zealand citizen poisoned after drinking contaminated alcohol in a popular tourist town in Laos has returned home, authorities said today, as Laos pledged to prosecute those responsible for the incident that has killed six tourists.

“The New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok has been providing assistance to one New Zealander who we believe to have been poisoned with methanol in Laos. They have now departed Laos and returned home,” a New Zealand Foreign Ministry spokesperson said by email, without providing further details on the person. Continued …

The Lao government is “profoundly saddened” by the deaths of foreign tourists from drinking alcohol contaminated with methanol and pledged to prosecute those responsible.

Here’s where methanol poisonings happen most

Two Australian teenagers died this week after becoming ill with suspected methanol poisoning in Laos, along with a dozen other tourists. Six people have now died, and they are all believed to have consumed drinks laced with methanol.

The Australian government has updated its travel advice for Laos, telling residents to be alert to the potential risk of spirit-based drinks, including cocktails. Bangkok choked by pollution

Prof. Rawiwan Oranratmanee was an impressively health-conscious person. Her routine workout included yoga, jogging and cycling, among others. Yet, at the age of only 55, she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

The dean of the faculty of Architecture at Chiang Mai University, Rawiwan passed away shortly after her first chemotherapy session. The malignancy was said to have caused by PM2.5, which resulted in a gene mutation. Continued …

Alarm over end of Thailand’s free medicines policy

A civil society group is unhappy with the Medical Council of Thailand’s legal action against the National Health Security Office (NHSO)’s policy over free medicine for 16 ailments under the universal healthcare scheme. It suggested the council immediately withdraw the lawsuit for the sake of patients.

Saree Aongsomwang, secretary-general of the Thailand Consumer Council (TCC), on Saturday expressed concern about the conflict between the Medical Council of Thailand and the Pharmacy Council of Thailand after the Supreme Administrative Court accepted the council’s complaint against the NHSO policy, which provides free medicine at pharmacies for symptoms on the list. Songkhla mulling tunnel, bridge options for lake

The Department of Rural Roads (DoRR) is conducting a feasibility study for a project to develop an alternative route across Songkhla Lake, connecting Muang district with Singha Nakhon district.

Speaking to a recent meeting of state agencies and locals, Weeradej Cheewapattananuwong, a senior design engineer from the DoRR, said the feasibility study is examining two options — a bridge across the lake or a tunnel. The initial findings are expected next month, he said. Continued …

Passengers record satisfaction with airlines

Airline passenger satisfaction remained high and stable this year, according to the International Air Transport Assn. (IATA), though the association suggested investing more in technology to meet customer demand.

Thailand plans major revamp of venues to host global events

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong outlined plans to revitalize Thailand’s events infrastructure and attract world-class competitions and concerts. He told the press on Wednesday that the ministry will act as a mediator between Chulalongkorn University and private companies to redevelop the National Stadium and the Nimibutr Sports Building.

The Physical Education Department’s contract for the stadium has expired and the owner, Chulalongkorn University, will be encouraged to allow private-sector management to transform it into a “multi-function stadium”. Continued …

THAI Airways to fly wide-body jets on domestic routes this December

In a move that’s sure to delight frequent flyers, Thai Airways (THAI) revealed plans to swap its A320s for wide-bodied aircraft on select domestic routes this December, just in time for the peak holiday season. The airline is ramping up capacity to accommodate the soaring demand during the Christmas-to-New Year rush, from Dec. 20 to 31.

While official word from THAI’s communications team is still pending, several travel sources, including Nation Online, have confirmed the changes. Starting in early December, Boeing 777s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Airbus A330s will replace the smaller A320s on key domestic routes, including those to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Thunderstorms possible tomorrow

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in certain areas. Bangkok and central regions are expected to experience the most severe conditions, affecting 22 provinces in total.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms are expected in 30% of the area, with heavy rain, particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 34°C. Easterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h. Lax Law Enforcement Cited for Alarming Road Fatalities in Thailand

Advocates are raising concerns about insufficient enforcement of road safety laws, which they believe is significantly contributing to Thailand’s staggering road fatality rate. On average, the country registers around 48 road deaths daily.

Speaking at a recent event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, advocates pressed for immediate improvements in law enforcement. The event, supported by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center, threw light on Thailand’s grim statistics. Facebook scams cost 718 million baht in Thailand last year

Facebook scams and fraudulent activities have inflicted significant financial damage, totaling 718 million baht over the past year, according to the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong.

A total of 514,590 krathong floats were collected from Bangkok waterways after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down 19.6% from last year. Lat Krabang district saw the highest number of floats.

Pattaya authorities and fishermen collect debris after Loy Krathong Festival

Officials from the Pattaya Environmental Department, along with local fishermen, launched a clean-up operation along the Pattaya Beach at 3 M on Nov. 16. The team worked together to collect krathong (floating lantern) debris along a 5-kilometer stretch of the beach, including Jomtien Beach.

The clean-up effort came in the aftermath of the Loy Krathong Festival, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, when both Thai and international tourists participated in the traditional ritual of floating krathongs to pay respects to the goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Escaped Monkeys Cause Mayhem at Thai Police Station in Lop Buri

In a bizarre turn of events, approximately 200 monkeys broke free from their enclosure at the Pho Khao Ton monkey nursery, located in Lop Buri’s Muang district, and made their way to the nearby Tha Hin police station. The incident unfolded on Saturday evening, causing significant commotion and surprising both residents and law enforcement officers.

The nursery, which houses about 300 monkeys captured from Lop Buri’s streets, faced an unforeseen challenge when the cage structure failed to contain its inhabitants. Curing loneliness

Studies have shown that loneliness and isolation can have a negative health impact, comparable to risks associated with smoking up to 15 cigarettes or drinking six glasses of alcohol per day.

According to a report by the National Economic and Social Development Council, the number of Thais who received mental health services increased from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023. The National Environment Board has resolved to enforce the Euro 6 standards for petrol internal combustion engines (ICE) from Jan. 1 next year, Industry Minister Akanat Promphan said on Sunday.

Another leopard spotted in Kaeng Krachan park

A leopard was spotted wandering around a helipad in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, believed to be waiting for its prey. Mongkol Chaipakdee, chief of the national park, said on Friday that park staff in the Ban Krang area observed the male leopard near the helipad.

Global EV sales up 35%

Global sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose 35% in October from the same month last year, led by a 54% jump in sales in China, market research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday.

Hua Hin resort owner makes largest single asset hotel transaction on record

Thai developer Property Perfect has sold the Hyatt Regency Sukhumvit in Bangkok for 5.055 billion baht (US$155 million). The property owned by Grand Asset Hotels & Property represents Thailand’s largest single asset hotel transaction on record.

Rising tides threaten to submerge fishing village south of Bangkok

A coastal village in Thailand has already begun to witness the dire consequences of global warming, as its land shrinks and its residents flee from the rising tides. Get ready for a dramatic weather shift as northern and northeastern Thailand is set to feel a temperature dip over the next 24 hours, while the southern regions, including Bangkok, face heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned that a monsoon trough will pass through the southern region, bringing moderate to heavy rains to the Gulf of Thailand and the southern provinces. The incident took place at the entrance of Soi 13/4 on Pattaya Beach Road, where authorities found two groups of Uzbek women engaged in a heated dispute, drawing the attention of tourists and local bystanders. Inflation up in Octpber, below forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.83% in October from a year earlier, the Commerce Ministry said today, remaining below the Bank of Thailand’s target range for inflation of 1% to 3%.

The figure compared with a forecast increase of 0.94% in a Reuters poll, and an annual inflation rate of 0.61% in September. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 0.77% on the year, versus a forecast rise of 0.79%. Continued …

Housing market unmoved by rate cut

The recent 0.25-percentage-point cut in interest rates is unlikely to have an immediate effect on the housing market, as the reduction is too modest to generate a significant impact, according to Sena Development.

Thai cabinet approves 2.5 billion baht to help flood-affected farmers

The cabinet approved a budget of 2.5 billion baht from the Central Fund today, to help farmers affected by this year’s flooding.

Thailand welcomes 29 million tourists, expects more as high season kicks in

Thailand has welcomed more than 29.08 million foreign tourists, generating approximately 1.358 trillion baht in revenue from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year.

According to statistics from the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chinese tourists topped the list of arrivals with over 5.75 million, followed by tourists from Malaysia (4.18 million), India (1.72 million), South Korea (1.53 million), and Russia (1.3 million) during the period. Continued …

Domestic tourists up 9% YOY, but likely to miss Bt1-trillion revenue goal

The number of domestic travelers in the first nine months of this year crossed 148.02 million person-trips, increasing 8.98% year on year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Tuesday. These travelers have generated income to local tourism businesses at around 702.52 billion baht, increasing 12.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, it said.

TAT estimated that total domestic tourists this year could exceed 200 million person-trips, and could even reach 230 million, said Nithee Seeprae, deputy governor for marketing communications. Continued …

Samui to welcome more cruise ships

Twenty-four cruise ships are scheduled to visit Koh Samui in Surat Thani in the current high season, helping the southern province rise two places in the top 10 list of most-visited Thai destinations, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The island on Tuesday morning welcomed 2,830 international visitors on the Celebrity Solstice at Nathon pier in tambon Ang Thong. Thai police raided a Chinese-owned recycling plant in Prachinburi province on Monday, seizing over 41.5 tons of hazardous waste, officials said.

Midsummer, Saab sign pact for 200 MW solar plant in Thailand

Sweden’s solar energy company Midsummer AB and defense firm Saab AB have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the aim of establishing a long-term partnership in Thailand, which includes the development of a 200-MW facility to produce thin film solar cells.
