Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

Thailand braces for heavy rain and flash floods

Thailand is set to experience heavy rainfall despite hot daytime temperatures, with 33 provinces expected to face severe weather conditions, including heavy rain. The Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts increased rain from today, Aug. 10 to 12, especially in four regions.

The weather forecast for today predicts rainfall in 38 provinces, with heavy rain in the eastern and southern regions at a probability of 60%. This could lead to sudden flooding and runoff, especially in mountainous areas near waterways and low-lying regions. Continued …

Nine police officers wounded in attack by suspected southern insurgents

Ten people were injured, including nine police officers, when suspected southern insurgents detonated three bombs planted at the entrance to the fishing port in Bana subdistrict, Pattani, near police flats.

Seven new boat routes planned for Bangkok to ease traffic woes

Seven new waterway routes are being planned in the Bangkok metropolitan area to ease traffic congestion and boost the comprehensive public transport network in the capital, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning said on Friday.

The Transport Ministry is drafting the “W-Map initiative” to add waterway transport routes in Bangkok from now until 2032, aiming to increase the total distance of boat routes in the capital to 244.2km from the current 131.2km. Continued …

Gold prices surged following a significant drop, according to the latest data from the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA). As yesterday morning, the price of gold jewelry was being sold at 40,950 baht per baht-weight, reflecting an increase of 250 baht compared to the final price the day before.

Unemployment hits 9-month high

Valeura Energy expects production to begin shortly through the MOPU Nong Yao C in license G11/48 in the Gulf of Thailand. It should increase the company’s share of oil production from the greater Nong Yao area to about 11,000 bbl/d at peak.

WTA’s Thailand Open stage to be held in Hua Hin Sept 18

The WTA on Friday announced two key changes to the 2024 calendar during the Asian swing later this season. The WTA 500 sanction previously held by the Zhengzhou Open will be transferred to the Ningbo Open starting in 2024, increasing its status from a WTA 250 event. The new WTA 500 Ningbo Open will take place during Week 42 of the calendar, commencing Oct. 14.

The vacant WTA 250 sanction will see a special one-year return to Hua Hin for the second staging of the Thailand Open this season, which will be held in Week 38 and begin Sept. 16. – wtatennis.com

Online retailers set to hike sales fees

Shopee, Lazada and TikTok are expected to continue to increase sales transaction fees to grow revenue, which raise costs for local merchants. TikTok Shop announced two fee increases this year. A further increase is planned, raising commission fees by roughly 1% per category, which will take effect in September. Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

The Thai currency was trading at 35.72 baht to the greenback around noon Wednesday, compared to Tuesday’s close of 35.99, said Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of the research, banking and financial sector at Kasikorn Research Center. Continued …

The Law Society of Thailand (LST) announced on Wednesday that it will file a class-action civil lawsuit against Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) for damages caused by the infestation of alien blackchin tilapia in water resources across 16 provinces.

At a press conference chaired by LST President Wichian Chupthaisong at the LST head office, the LST did not mention CPF by name but referred to “a business operator that sought permission and imported the alien species for an experiment in 2010.” Continued …

86 communities sign up for first batch of agricultural drones project

The agricultural drones project aimed at improving productivity has secured participation from 86 communities across 22 provinces in the first batch, a statement released by Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency said on Wednesday.

The “Thang Raj” application, which is to be used to register for the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet handout scheme, was set to be ready for users from 8am today, the first day of registration for those who have smartphones, the Finance Ministry announced.

Factory output falls more than forecast as car output slumps

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 1.71% in June from a year earlier due mainly to lower car production and higher energy costs, the Industry Ministry said on Wednesday, missing analysts’ expectations.

Little by little, the canopy of branches and interlocking leaves closes overhead as our vehicle rollicks deeper into the plantation. Pakamart Tongkam points from the driver’s seat into the stark thicket of rubber trees that now surround us: “When I was a child, I slept out there in a small hut while my mum and dad worked in the plantation through the night.”

Heavy flooding forces closures in Khao Yai National Park

Heavy flooding has led to the closure of key sites in Khao Yai National Park, impacting popular tourist destinations and local communities. Takhro Falls and the Sai Yai River in Prachinburi were shut down yesterday, while Nang Rong Falls in Nakhon Nayok followed suit today.

Majority of cybercrime victims in Thailand are working-age women

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) revealed that over two-thirds of cybercrime victims are women, with most being of working age. From March 1, 2022, to June 30 this year, there were 575,507 online complaints, totaling 65.715 billion baht in damages, averaging over 80 million baht per day.

RTP deputy spokesperson Sirivat Deephor highlighted that National Police Chief Torsak Sukwimol is deeply concerned about the public’s vulnerability to various forms of crime, especially cybercrime. Thai rice exports soar in June thanks to Indonesian demand boost

Thailand’s rice exports surged in June, driven by Indonesia’s increased demand to maintain food security, Thai Rice Exporters Assn. President Charoen Laothamatas said on Tuesday.

Heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash 39 provinces across Thailand, with severe weather warnings issued for potential flash floods and runoff. Bangkok is also bracing for significant rainfall, with 70% of the area anticipated to be affected.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, mostly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. The National Credit Bureau (NCB) reported a significant 39% increase in bad debt for pickup truck loans in May, highlighting an alarming trend in the auto finance sector.

Thailand’s instant coffee market is expected to grow by 5% this year as Nescafé Thailand plans to allocate 620 million baht for brand communication advertising.

Months-long sluggish car sales have caused the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) to reduce its car manufacturing target for 2024 to 1.7 million units, down from 1.9 million units.

New Post-Graduate Visa for Foreign Students Implemented

Starting July 15, the Thai government has implemented the Non-Ed Plus Visa, which will allow foreign students studying bachelor’s degree level or above to extend their stay in Thailand for one year after graduation to give them time to find employment, travel, participate in other similar activities, or apply for a new type of visa once employed.

More macaques captured in Lop Buri

Thirty-eight long-tailed  macaques were captured yesterday in a new round of relocations, jointly launched by the Lop Buri municipal administration and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, to contain the population of the monkeys and to reduce the disturbance they cause.
