Starting today, petrol and gasohol prices are set to climb by 30 satang per liter, courtesy of PTT Station’s latest price tweak. In contrast, diesel users can breathe a slight sigh of relief as their prices remain untouched.

Expect to shell out 44.24 baht per liter for petrol. Gasohol 95 will hit 35.95 baht per liter, with its sibling, Gasohol 91, coming in at 35.58 baht. Continued …

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for south

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms affecting the southern region, anticipating torrential rain, gusty winds and rough sea conditions from today to Saturday.

The U.S. State Department today confirmed the death of one of its citizens in Vang Vieng, a tourist town where at least 10 people became seriously ill last week from drinking spirits believed to be laced with methanol, a cheap and deadly form of alcohol mostly found in crude or criminal brews. The Criminal Court of Thailand yesterday sentenced the cyanide serial killer to death for her chilling role in the murder of 14 innocent people. The Criminal Court wasn’t pulling any punches, as her accomplices didn’t get off lightly either.

Thailand risks missing its economic growth target next year if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his pledge to raise tariffs, as it could hurt the country’s exports and weaken the baht, according to a study.

Third phase of handout to cost Bt140 billion

The Thai government expects to carry out the third phase of its cash handout stimulus program in the second quarter next year, when 140 billion baht will be distributed to 14 million people, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

The government is planning to solve the debt problems of the public and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by suspending interest payments for three years on accounts that became non-performing loans (NPLs) less than a year prior to October 2024.

The year 2024 marks a golden age for Thai film, according to the “king of cinemas”, Vicha Poolvaraluk. The CEO of Major Cineplex Group says the Thai film industry is experiencing its biggest boom in 30 years, driven by strong domestic and international demand.

Foreign arrivals cross 30 million, generating Bt1.43 trillion

Thailand welcomed 30,564,481 foreign visitors between Jan. 1 and Nov. 17, generating some 1.43 trillion baht for Thai entrepreneurs, the Tourism and Sports Ministry announced on Tuesday.

China was the top source market for foreign tourists to Thailand, with 5,973,990 arrivals, followed by Malaysia (4,361,287), India (1,822,543), South Korea (1,608,369), and Russia (1,405,327). Continued …

Thailand plans major revamp of venues to host global events

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong outlined plans to revitalize Thailand’s events infrastructure and attract world-class competitions and concerts. He told the press on Wednesday that the ministry will act as a mediator between Chulalongkorn University and private companies to redevelop the National Stadium and the Nimibutr Sports Building.

THAI Airways to fly wide-body jets on domestic routes this December

In a move that’s sure to delight frequent flyers, Thai Airways (THAI) revealed plans to swap its A320s for wide-bodied aircraft on select domestic routes this December, just in time for the peak holiday season. The airline is ramping up capacity to accommodate the soaring demand during the Christmas-to-New Year rush, from Dec. 20 to 31.

While official word from THAI’s communications team is still pending, several travel sources, including Nation Online, have confirmed the changes. Starting in early December, Boeing 777s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Airbus A330s will replace the smaller A320s on key domestic routes, including those to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Thunderstorms possible tomorrow

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in certain areas. Bangkok and central regions are expected to experience the most severe conditions, affecting 22 provinces in total.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms are expected in 30% of the area, with heavy rain, particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 34°C. Easterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h. The sea will have waves lower than 1 meter, but thunderstorms may cause waves to exceed 2 meters. Continued …

Lax Law Enforcement Cited for Alarming Road Fatalities in Thailand

Advocates are raising concerns about insufficient enforcement of road safety laws, which they believe is significantly contributing to Thailand’s staggering road fatality rate. On average, the country registers around 48 road deaths daily.

Speaking at a recent event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, advocates pressed for immediate improvements in law enforcement. The event, supported by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center, threw light on Thailand’s grim statistics. Facebook scams cost 718 million baht in Thailand last year

Facebook scams and fraudulent activities have inflicted significant financial damage, totaling 718 million baht over the past year, according to the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong.

500,000 krathong floats collected in Bangkok waterways

A total of 514,590 krathong floats were collected from Bangkok waterways after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down 19.6% from last year. Lat Krabang district saw the highest number of floats.

On Saturday, officials from the Department of Environment, the Department of Drainage and Sewerage and all 50 district offices completed the collection and sorting of the floats around 5am Saturday, having started at 8pm Friday. Continued …

Pattaya authorities and fishermen collect debris after Loy Krathong Festival

Officials from the Pattaya Environmental Department, along with local fishermen, launched a clean-up operation along the Pattaya Beach at 3 M on Nov. 16. The team worked together to collect krathong (floating lantern) debris along a 5-kilometer stretch of the beach, including Jomtien Beach.

The clean-up effort came in the aftermath of the Loy Krathong Festival, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, when both Thai and international tourists participated in the traditional ritual of floating krathongs to pay respects to the goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Though Miss Thailand, Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri, won fourth place in Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico on Sunday, several fans in Thailand praised her for her achievement in the final round. Get ready for a dramatic weather shift as northern and northeastern Thailand is set to feel a temperature dip over the next 24 hours, while the southern regions, including Bangkok, face heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned that a monsoon trough will pass through the southern region, bringing moderate to heavy rains to the Gulf of Thailand and the southern provinces. On the eastern coast, thunderstorms will dominate, with up to 80% of the area affected by heavy torrential rain. LNG prices to keep power bills stable

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices are likely to stay unchanged in early 2025, putting less pressure on the authorities preparing to calculate a new power tariff for electricity bills between January and April next year, says the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

Inflation up in Octpber, below forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.83% in October from a year earlier, the Commerce Ministry said today, remaining below the Bank of Thailand’s target range for inflation of 1% to 3%.

The figure compared with a forecast increase of 0.94% in a Reuters poll, and an annual inflation rate of 0.61% in September. The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 0.77% on the year, versus a forecast rise of 0.79%. Continued …

Thailand welcomes 29 million tourists, expects more as high season kicks in

Thailand has welcomed more than 29.08 million foreign tourists, generating approximately 1.358 trillion baht in revenue from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year.

According to statistics from the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chinese tourists topped the list of arrivals with over 5.75 million, followed by tourists from Malaysia (4.18 million), India (1.72 million), South Korea (1.53 million), and Russia (1.3 million) during the period. Continued …

Domestic tourists up 9% YOY, but likely to miss Bt1-trillion revenue goal

The number of domestic travelers in the first nine months of this year crossed 148.02 million person-trips, increasing 8.98% year on year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Tuesday. These travelers have generated income to local tourism businesses at around 702.52 billion baht, increasing 12.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, it said.

TAT estimated that total domestic tourists this year could exceed 200 million person-trips, and could even reach 230 million, said Nithee Seeprae, deputy governor for marketing communications. Continued …

Samui to welcome more cruise ships

Twenty-four cruise ships are scheduled to visit Koh Samui in Surat Thani in the current high season, helping the southern province rise two places in the top 10 list of most-visited Thai destinations, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The island on Tuesday morning welcomed 2,830 international visitors on the Celebrity Solstice at Nathon pier in tambon Ang Thong. Thai police raided a Chinese-owned recycling plant in Prachinburi province on Monday, seizing over 41.5 tons of hazardous waste, officials said.

Southeast Asia is the second most-affected region in the world when it comes to road accidents, after Africa, and Thailand “tragically leads in this statistics”, said UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt on Monday in Bangkok.

Authorities yesterday discovered the body of a tuskless adult male wild elephant, known as a “Si Dor,” in the Nam Rin stream in Ban Song Khon, Pla Ba subdistrict, Phu Ruea district. Thai Rice Exports Surge 22% in First 9 Months

Thailand exported 7,448,941 tons of rice worth 172.019 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024 (January-September), an increase of 22% in volume and 45.8% in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Rice Exporters Association of Thailand.

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. Thailand might be able to draw at least 60 events to be hosted in the country in the next three years, generating 7.42 billion baht in revenue, according to Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

Foundation documents impact of plastic waste in Thailand

Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

The report indicates that Thailand’s primary plastic production generated up to 27.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) annually, which was equal to greenhouse gas emission from 5.9 million cars. Continued …

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Chiang Mai Authority has backed a Thai-Chinese waste-to-energy power plant that is expected to take two years to complete. The joint investment agreement, valued at 2.3 billion baht, was signed on Friday.

The plant will incinerate 500-650 tons of waste per day to generate 10 megawatts of electricity. The firm’s experience in building waste-to-energy plants in China will be applied to the project in Chiang Mai, which will be located in Ban Luang subdistrict, Chom Thong district. Continued …
