Rama II Road fix in two weeks, new lane to relieve traffic

The outbound lanes on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon will be re-opened to traffic within 14 days after work to clear the site of Friday’s crane collapse is finished, according to the Department of Highways (DoH).

Director-general Apirat Chaiwongnoi said on Sunday work was underway to remove debris from the collapsed section of the elevated Ekkachai-Ban Phaeo Intercity Motorway 82 (M82) project. Continued …

Rama 2 motorway construction deaths reach 142

Six more workers were killed and 11 injured in Rama 2 motorway collapse, pushing the total death toll to 142 since 2018. Thailand’s police chief ordered a criminal probe, as officials investigate the cause of the disaster and promised compensation for victims’ families.

On Friday, a sixth fatality was confirmed after heavy girders and cement elements crashed during a difficult engineering maneuver. The incident occurred in Samut Sakhon province, south of Bangkok, as workers toiled on the Rama 2 motorway project. Continued …

Driver Fires Shots to Scare Wild Elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park

Authorities are pursuing legal action against unidentified individuals in a black car who fired four gunshots at wild elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The perpetrators face six serious charges under wildlife, firearm, and national park laws.

Mongkol Chaiphakdee, chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, revealed that on Nov. 29, at around 7 pm, a concerned citizen reported the incident, seen via a TikTok video. The footage captured individuals in the car firing shots on Nong Phlap–Huai Sat Yai Road, Huai Sat Yai subdistrict, Hua Hin district. Wild elephants were present on the road during the shooting. Thailand Flooding Kills Nine, Displaces Thousands

Flooding driven by heavy rains in southern Thailand has killed nine people and displaced more than 13,000, officials said Saturday, as rescue teams using boats and jet skis worked to reach stranded residents. Local media footage showed residents wading through murky, chest-deep water and cars submerged in flooded streets.

“Flooding across eight provinces in southern Thailand has affected 553,921 households and claimed nine lives, prompting agencies to mobilize urgent assistance,” the country’s disaster agency said. Continued …

Flooding eases in Hat Yai, but parts of southern Thailand still under water

Hat Yai, the economic hub in Thailand’s south, is slowly getting back to normal, while flooding elsewhere in the southern provinces remains serious after the region was inundated by downpours that triggered deluges.

Greater Bangkok to face thick smog from today to Friday

The Pollution Control Department is warning that people in Greater Bangkok will face thick smog from Monday to Friday due to smoke from farmland and stagnant air over the capital and nearby provinces.

The department said yesterday that on Saturday there were 184 hot spots in Thailand and most of them, about 140, resulted from fires on farmland. The smoke from agricultural areas was blown by northeasterly winds toward the southwest. Continued …

Laos factory owner arrested in methanol poisoning tourist tragedy

In a case that has sent shockwaves across the globe, police in Laos arrested the owner of a factory believed to be the source of a deadly methanol poisoning incident that claimed the lives of six foreign tourists. The factory, situated on the outskirts of Vientiane, the capital city, is suspected of producing toxic batches of the local favorites, Tiger Vodka and Tiger Whiskey.

Factory layoffs dampen economy hopes

According to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), there were 414,000 unemployed people in the third quarter this year, up from 401,000 year-on-year. Foton Motor inaugurates Thailand plant

Chinese commercial vehicle maker Foton Motor celebrated the completion of its Thailand factory last week. At the event, the automaker saw an all-electric heavy-duty truck roll off the production line at the Thai facility, which represents the one millionth vehicle produced for Foton Motor’s overseas business (including export and local production outside of China).

Motorcycle sales set to increase in Q4

Motorcycle sales, especially completely knocked-down (CKD) units, in the final quarter this year are expected to increase, thanks to more purchase orders overseas, which caused exports to skyrocket in October, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Learn about Thailand’s new tax on expat income

Hua Hin Expat News yesterday listened in on an online webinar regarding the new tax on expat income to be implmented in Thailand next year. There is a great deal of confusion on this subject and the group presenting the webinar has researched how it affects expats from a number of countries.

Minister sounds alarm on emissions

Legislation may be needed to enforce carbon reduction if Thailand fails to meet its emission targets, says Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.

In his keynote speech at a seminar on net-zero targets, Pichai said Thailand has committed under international agreements to achieving net-zero carbon emissions within 41 years. PTT ramps up drive to reduce CO2 emissions

National oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc is stepping up efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its businesses by adopting carbon capture technology and preparing to run a trial on hydrogen usage to depend less on fossil fuels.

Bangkok to renew fees to encourage sorting of rubbish

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is expected to renew garbage collection fees next June as part of its efforts to encourage people to sort their household waste.

Public Bus Accidents in Thailand Surge by 46.5%

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has revealed a sharp 46.5% increase in accidents involving public buses in 2023. Buses accounted for the highest proportion of these incidents, with 73.0% of cases, driven by driver errors and poorly maintained, aging vehicles. Additionally, unsafe vehicle modifications have exacerbated the risk.

Public transport remains essential, particularly in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, where over 968 million trips were recorded in 2022. However, a troubling rise in fatalities and injuries was reported, with casualties from public bus accidents increasing by more than 105% compared to 2022. Continued …

Power tariff to be capped until next April

In an extension of the government’s current policy, Thailand’s energy minister plans to cap the power tariff until April next year. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Monday that the policy was to keep the average power tariff at no more than 4.18 baht per unit.

It has been implemented for almost a year. The 4.18-baht power tariff rate set by the Energy Regulatory Commission will expire at the end of this year. Continued …

Police arrested politician Samart Janechaijittawanich in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai on Monday, after he was wanted for alleged money laundering in connection with The iCon Group fraud case.

Unemployment rises by 1.02% in third quarter

Thailand’s unemployment rate in the third quarter this year stood at 1.02%, increasing from 0.99% recorded for the same period in 2023, with about 410,000 Thais unemployed, a 3.2% increase year on year, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its report on Thai society’s outlook for Q3/2024.

The third quarter unemployment rate is, however, an improvement over the 1.07% recorded in the previous quarter, which was a two-year high, NESDC said. Continued …

Thailand’s household debt falls for the first time in 42 months

Thailand’s household debt dropped in the second quarter of this year to 89.6% of GDP, from 90.7% in the first quarter, which is the first fall in three and a half years, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), today.

Although the decrease is a healthy sign, he noted that household debt in Thailand is still higher than in other countries in the region, but added that if the rate of economic growth can be maintained, household debt is likely to improve accordingly. Continued …

Narong Yuenyonghattaporn, a retired civil servant in Bangkok, bought an electric car made by GAC Aion earlier this year. He’s part of a growing number of Thai drivers buying EVs sold by Chinese car companies but made in Thailand, a nation that’s become one of the front lines in the global battle for auto-market supremacy.

Thai October exports rise 14.6% y/y, above forecast

Thailand’s customs-cleared exports rose 14.6% in October from a year earlier, the commerce ministry said today, beating analysts’ expectations. The reading compared with a forecast 5.2% increase for October in a Reuters poll, and followed September’s 1.1% rise.

Exports totaled $27.22 billion, while imports amounted to $28.02 billion, the latter up 15.9% from a year earlier, the ministry said. Exports, a key driver of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, were boosted by stronger shipments of technology-related products, particularly computers, equipment, and components, the ministry said. Chinese firms prep Bt90 billion in Thailand investments

Chinese entrepreneurs are expected to make new investments worth 90 billion baht as they are increasingly concerned about the impact of the incoming U.S. president’s plan to impose high tariffs on Chinese exports, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Van crash in Thap Sakae district leaves 3 dead

In the early hours yesterday, a crash occurred on Phetkasem Road Huai Yang subdistrict, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan. A red-plate Toyota van used for transporting a psychiatric patient collided with the rear of a trailer truck, resulting in three fatalities and one injury.

The accident happened at approximately 2: am just 2 kilometers before Wanakorn Beach National Park. The van used by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) to transport a psychiatric patient for treatment in Nakhon Pathom was returning to Chumphon when the crash occurred. Continued …

A New Zealand citizen poisoned after drinking contaminated alcohol in a popular tourist town in Laos has returned home, authorities said today, as Laos pledged to prosecute those responsible for the incident that has killed six tourists.

“The New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok has been providing assistance to one New Zealander who we believe to have been poisoned with methanol in Laos. They have now departed Laos and returned home,” a New Zealand Foreign Ministry spokesperson said by email, without providing further details on the person. Continued …

Two Australian teenagers died this week after becoming ill with suspected methanol poisoning in Laos, along with a dozen other tourists. Six people have now died, and they are all believed to have consumed drinks laced with methanol.

The Australian government has updated its travel advice for Laos, telling residents to be alert to the potential risk of spirit-based drinks, including cocktails. A civil society group is unhappy with the Medical Council of Thailand’s legal action against the National Health Security Office (NHSO)’s policy over free medicine for 16 ailments under the universal healthcare scheme. Passengers record satisfaction with airlines

Airline passenger satisfaction remained high and stable this year, according to the International Air Transport Assn. (IATA), though the association suggested investing more in technology to meet customer demand.

Thailand’s household debt rises to Bt1.2 trillion

Starting today, petrol and gasohol prices are set to climb by 30 satang per liter, courtesy of PTT Station’s latest price tweak. In contrast, diesel users can breathe a slight sigh of relief as their prices remain untouched.

Expect to shell out 44.24 baht per liter for petrol. Gasohol 95 will hit 35.95 baht per liter, with its sibling, Gasohol 91, coming in at 35.58 baht. Continued …

The airline is ramping up capacity to accommodate the soaring demand during the Christmas-to-New Year rush, from Dec. 20 to 31.

While official word from THAI’s communications team is still pending, several travel sources, including Nation Online, have confirmed the changes. The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in certain areas. Bangkok and central regions are expected to experience the most severe conditions, affecting 22 provinces in total.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms are expected in 30% of the area, with heavy rain, particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 34°C. Easterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h. Lax Law Enforcement Cited for Alarming Road Fatalities in Thailand

Advocates are raising concerns about insufficient enforcement of road safety laws, which they believe is significantly contributing to Thailand’s staggering road fatality rate. On average, the country registers around 48 road deaths daily.

Speaking at a recent event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, advocates pressed for immediate improvements in law enforcement. Officials from the Pattaya Environmental Department, along with local fishermen, launched a clean-up operation along the Pattaya Beach at 3 M on Nov. 16. The team worked together to collect krathong (floating lantern) debris along a 5-kilometer stretch of the beach, including Jomtien Beach.

Curing loneliness

Studies have shown that loneliness and isolation can have a negative health impact, comparable to risks associated with smoking up to 15 cigarettes or drinking six glasses of alcohol per day.

According to a report by the National Economic and Social Development Council, the number of Thais who received mental health services increased from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023. The National Environment Board has resolved to enforce the Euro 6 standards for petrol internal combustion engines (ICE) from Jan. 1 next year, Industry Minister Akanat Promphan said on Sunday.

During its third meeting for this year on Friday, the NEB had emission standards for ICE engines on its agenda, Akanat said.
