At least 2 dead as flood victims await evacuation in Chiang Mai

Evacuations are underway to help people stranded at numerous locations in Muang and Saraphi districts of Chiang Mai province, which were heavily hit by the overflowing Ping River from late Saturday night.

The level of the Ping River at the Nawarat Bridge in Muang district reached a historic high of 5.30 meters on Saturday night. The level declined to 5.15 meters at 4am and 5 meters at 8am on Sunday. Continued …

Cleanup begins in Chiang Mai as flood recedes

Chiang Mai Municipality started a major cleanup on Monday as the huge flood that paralyzed the northern city began draining off.

Tractors and water trucks were deployed to help workers remove the thick alluvial sediment from areas around three bridges crossing the Ping River, Naowarat, Nakhon Ping and Rattanakosin. Authorities are rushing to clear roads to rescue people stranded in Muang Khong, a famous tourist destination in Chiang Mai province, after multiple landslides cut off access. Heavy rains in the province have caused widespread flooding, not only in the main city district but also in neighboring areas.

Monk Leads Elephants to Deliver Supplies to Flood Victims

Two elephants drown at Chiang Mai’s Elephant Nature Park

A religious ceremony was held to bid farewell to “Fah Sai” and “Ploy Thong”, two female elephants from the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai province, who were washed away by a flash flood on Friday.

Rescue of more than 100 jumbos from flooded sanctuary in Chiang Mai accomplished

More than 100 elephants were safely evacuated over Friday and Saturday from the flooded Elephant and Environment Foundation, in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai province, according to the Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang province.

The center said that it received a call for help from the foundation on Friday morning and immediately sent a team to assist. All road access to the foundation was flooded by overflows from the Taeng River and the currents were strong. Communication by cellphone was cut off and only radios were working. Continued …

It is not lost on some that internet sensation Moo Deng, the baby pygmy hippo, already lives inside a zoo enclosure – the perfect pedestal from which onlookers so possessed by her cuteness can gawk, heckle, and harass her so much that they’ve confessed to wanting to ball her up and swallow her whole. After all, her name translates to “bouncy pork.”

DDC warns against uncooked pork after 12 deaths in Thailand

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) issued a warning yesterday regarding the consumption of uncooked pork, following 12 fatalities linked to Streptococcus suis in four provinces in the lower northeastern region of Thailand.

Dr. Taweechai Wisanuyothin, head of DDC Office 9, reported that from Jan. 7 to Sept. 3 there were 149 cases of hearing loss caused by this bacterium in the surveillance areas of Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, and Chaiyaphum. Continued …

More flooding is expected in beleaguered Chiang Mai later today, with water levels along the Ping River expected to reach 4.95 meters starting in the morning. Recent heavy downpours in upstream areas have caused the Ping River to rise rapidly, Gov. Nirat Pongsitthithaworn said on Thursday.

Business debt is now nearly as high as household debt, manufacturing faces contraction

The head of one of Thailand’s key economic agencies highlighted another critical problem for the economy. In the course of explaining a projected contraction in manufacturing for 2024, Worawan Chitarun of the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) underlined the sky-high level of business debt acting like a weight on economic development.

In short, this is in addition to household debt. Presently, Thailand’s level of business debt is 87.6% of GDP, nearly the same as the country’s household debt level, which is 90.8% of GDP. Continued …

Fiscal 2024 sees highest revenue for Thai Treasury Dept in 91 years

The Treasury Department reported total earnings of 14.38 billion baht for fiscal 2024, making this the highest revenue earned in 91 years, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said on Monday. He noted that this figure represents a 57.9% increase from the previous fiscal year’s revenue and is 25.4% higher than projected.

Paopoom attributed this surge in revenue to the department’s expedited bidding and leasing contracts for its properties, as well as the extension of contracts with major tenants. New business registrations increase slightly

Only four out of more than 26,000 businesses in Thailand inspected by the Business Development Department were found to be illegally operating through nominees, while 64 others were found to have violated the accounting law.

Department Director-general Auramon Supthaweethum on Monday said that her department recently inspected 26,019 businesses across four sectors, including tourism and related services, real estate, hotels and resorts, and logistics, in a bid to find foreign-owned businesses run through Thai nominees. Surge in Chinese arrivals, tourism income expected during Golden Week

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimates that between 132,000 and 183,000 Chinese tourists will enter Thailand during China’s Golden Week which runs from today until Oct. 7.

Overflowing Ping River continues to affect downtown Chiang Mai

The flooding triggered by the overflowing of the Ping River in Chiang Mai’s Mueang district is even worse than in 2011, according to a report. Roadside bomb injures eight soldiers in Narathiwat

Eight soldiers sustained injuries in a roadside explosion in Rangae district, Narathiwat, believed to be orchestrated by insurgents. Mortgage growth forecast to plunge

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) is likely to contract by 1% this year, given the declines recorded during the first eight months of the year, caused by a raft of economic problems and the impact of severe floods, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presided over the handing out of 10,000-baht to the first group of recipients on Wednesday morning and pledged to hold the second and third phases soon. Playful rain, cheerful mist at Ban E-Tong

As soon as we arrived at Ban E-Tong, a small village in Kanchanaburi province, in the late afternoon, everyone found themselves in a kingdom engulfed by mist. The familiar scenes were almost entirely swallowed up. We willingly stepped out of the car, humbly embracing the clarity of the season.

B.Grimm Power Public Co. Commerce Ministry to explore why pork prices are so high

The Commerce Ministry is inspecting pork prices nationwide in a bid to reduce expenses for Thai consumers and boost the competitiveness of producers.

Ministry spokesperson Wittayakorn Maneenetr said on Tuesday that the decision was taken after Thailand’s pork price was found to be higher than in other countries. Pit Bull Attacks & Kills 67-Year-Old Woman Cycling in Pathum Thani

A 67-year-old woman in Pathum Thani was fatally attacked by a Pit Bull while cycling near her home in Chiang Rak Noi, Sam Khok District. The woman was found with severe bite wounds over most of her body. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

3 million to get handout funds today

The first 3 million needy and disabled people — out of a total of 14.5 million — will receive their 10,000-baht handout under the government’s digital wallet program today, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

10,000-Baht Grant for Over 30 Million People Unlikely This Year

It is unlikely that over 30 million Thai citizens will receive a 10,000-baht grant under the second phase of the Pheu Thai-led populist handout scheme this year, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated yesterday.

Out of approximately 45 million Thais, around 14.5 million will start receiving the funds through their state welfare cards today, with the remaining 30 million expected to wait until next year, according to Julapun. The manufacturing and sales of vehicles in Thailand fell by more than 20% in August compared to the same period last year, stats from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) show.

Mechanic Crushed to Death by Truck in Cha Am

An incident claimed the life of a 28-year-old truck mechanic yesterday while he was repairing the undercarriage of a 10-wheeler truck. The incident occurred at a truck repair shop along the Cha Am-Pranburi bypass, heading toward Bangkok.

According to police reports, the mechanic had finished replacing parts under the truck and was preparing to reattach the rear wheels. Suspected Drunk Drivers to Face New Testing Methods

A Life Changing Move to Rural Thailand

Charissa Enget needed to find an engineering course she could afford. She found one in rural Thailand, where she got a scholarship and living costs were low. It took her six months to learn the language so she could communicate with fellow students, make friends, and travel round the country at weekends.

“I think living abroad is a lot different from traveling abroad, just because you really get to know the people and experience the culture, and it changes your way of thinking a lot more. Thailand changed the way I interact with people in a lot of ways, and I feel bonded to Thailand for the rest of my life. It really changed the way I want to live my life, and I’ll never stop loving Thailand or traveling back there as much as I can.”

Tropical storm Soulik to hit Thailand with heavy rain for 5 days

Tropical storm Soulik over central Vietnam is forecast to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rain to several parts of Thailand for the next five days, the Thai Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

Thailand’s cannabis scene is about to get a whole lot more official but there are big consequences for those who don’t play by the rules. From Jan. 1, 2025, consumers will still have access to the country’s wide variety of dry flowers but breaking key regulations could land you in hot water.

The rules are simple: no smoking in public, no extracts with more than 2% THC without permission, and no use for anyone under 20, pregnant, or breastfeeding. Bangkok Restricts Street Vending to Low-Income Thais

Condo group calls for looser real estate lending rules

The government is advised to ease lending restrictions and reduce interest rates as newly completed condo units worth more than 86 billion baht are awaiting transfer in the fourth quarter, which could lift both the property sector and the entire economy, says the Thai Condominium Assn.

FTI proposes corporate tax exemption for businesses affected by flooding

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has proposed to the government that it make an exemption from paying corporate income tax, extends the period for the submission of tax returns and exempts import tariffs on machinery for businesses hardest hit by the flooding.

FTI President Kriangkrai Thiennukul said the industrial confidence index for August was 87.7, which was lower than the preceding month, due mainly to a slowdown in demand, particularly for durable goods like automobiles. Continued …

A depression is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm today, land in Vietnam and cause heavy downpours across Thailand until Monday, according to the Meteorological Department.

Flood warnings issued for northeastern provinces

Authorities are closely monitoring water levels along the Mekong River, particularly in Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces, as rising waters threaten low-lying areas.

Consumer spending to finally recover this year

Navy rescues 130 tourists stranded on an island off Phuket

About 130 Thai and foreign tourists, mostly Chinese, were safely rescued yesterday after they became stranded on Racha Yai Island, off Phuket, due to rough seas and strong winds, making it impossible for the tourist speed boats to pick them up.

Alerted by a call for help, the Royal Thai Navy sent a coastal patrol vessel to the island to take the stranded tourists back to the shore of Phuket. A naval officer said that the rescue mission was hampered by rough seas, but all the tourists were safely rescued. Continued …

Thailand’s energy-related CO2 emissions down 2.5% in first half of 2024

Thailand’s carbon dioxide emissions from energy usage from January to June stood at 121.9 million tons, down 2.5% year on year (YoY), the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) reported on Wednesday. The office said electricity generation emitted the most CO2 at 48.1 million tons, increasing 5.8% YoY.

In second place was the transport sector, which emitted 41.5 million tons of CO2, down 1.2% YoY. The industrial sector, meanwhile, emitted 25.6 million tons of CO2, decreasing 16.8% YoY. Continued …
