Rethinking Thai cities’ link to water

Water holds special symbolic significance in Thai culture, from Loy Krathong to Songkran festivals. But as much as we respect the value of water, we must also recognize that failure to care for our water resources puts our lives and well-being at risk.

Over the last four decades, we have transformed the natural landscape of Thailand. As the country has become rapidly urbanized and industrialized, we have filled much of the floodplains, wetlands and even canals to turn water into land, so that we can build and expand our towns, cities and industrial parks. Why are there no indigenous Thai car brands?

The recent meeting between Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and executives from major Japanese carmakers, including Honda, Nissan, Isuzu, and Toyota, brings to light a pressing question: Why hasn’t Thailand, a nation with robust manufacturing capabilities and a strategic geographical position, cultivated its own indigenous car brand?

This question is not just about diversifying Thailand’s industrial portfolio; it’s about seizing an opportunity to assert its soft power and entrepreneurial spirit on the global stage. On this World Elephant Day, the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) is launching the Asian Elephant Alliance (AEA) to secure a future in which loss and fragmentation of elephant habitats are reduced, people and elephants live side by side in a sustainable way, and wild elephant populations are stable.

World Elephant Day was founded in Thailand just over a decade ago to raise the profile of these pachyderms globally, and to garner support to rally around the issues they face. With a philosophy of collective effort at its core, World Elephant Day is meant to galvanize a powerful partnership of governments, the private sector, civil society and citizens to support conservation efforts for wild elephants. Russians fleeing Putin’s war find a home in Phuket

In the humid evenings on the Thai island of Phuket, Aleksei* often sits alone on his balcony, and wonders if the past 18 months have been a strange dream. Last year, he was living with his mother and siblings in Moscow, and working in an IT job in one of the city’s skyscrapers. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, changed everything.

“At that moment, I thought: ‘OK what opportunities do I have here in Russia?’ Go to war, which I don’t want, of course, because Ukrainians are our brothers,” he says. The alternative, to protest, was hopeless. “It is impossible to fight against the government in Russia,” he says. Continued …

Unfortunately, the Thai economy is heavily dependent upon international tourism. For the Thai people, the shutdown was a financial disaster. Continued …

Trump indicted for efforts to overturn 2020 election and block transfer of power

Donald Trump was indicted on felony charges Tuesday for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol, with the Justice Department moving to hold him accountable for an effort to block the transfer of presidential power.

The four-count indictment, the third criminal case against Trump, provided deeper insight into a dark chapter in American history that has already been the subject of exhaustive federal investigations and captivating public hearings. It chronicles a months-long campaign of lies about the election results and says that, even when those falsehoods culminated in a chaotic insurrection at the Capitol, Trump sought to exploit that violence by trying to delay further the counting of votes that sealed his defeat.
