The Food and Drug Administration approved Eli Lilly’s Kisunla on Tuesday for mild or early cases of dementia caused by Alzheimer’s. Bangkok has been ranked third among the costliest cities in Southeast Asia for international workers by business adviser Mercer.

Thailand-China Railway Project: Enhancing Regional Connectivity

Thailand is developing an 873-kilometer high-speed rail project that will connect Bangkok with the Laos-China railway. Cabinet approves additional Bt276 billion in borrowing

Why are so many foreigners residing in Thailand problematic types?

I can’t help but notice all the negative aspects about many of the expats I’ve come across in Thailand. It’s disheartening to see that so many foreigners seem to fall into one of several categories: unpleasant, criminal, or otherwise problematic.

Firstly, the number of rude and disrespectful expats is staggering. It’s as if some people left their manners at the airport. From obnoxious behavior in public to a complete lack of respect for Thai culture and people, these individuals don’t add anything positive to the backdrop. Heavy flooding after torrential rains in Phuket

Heavy rainfall in Phuket disrupted flights and caused widespread flooding across the tourist island province. Starting at 7am yesterday, persistent rain forced the diversion of around 10 inbound flights to other airports, including Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Krabi, Langkawi, Penang, and Surat Thani.

The price of cooking gas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), will remain fixed at 423 baht per 15-kilogram cylinder until Sept. 30 as energy officials have agreed to extend subsidies from the Oil Fuel Fund.

Thai Banks Are the Top Suppliers of Financial Services to Myanmar’s Military: UN Expert

Thai banks have become the main supplier of international financial services for Myanmar’s military government, enabling its purchases of goods and equipment used to carry out its increasingly bloody war against pro-democracy resistance forces and armed ethnic minority groups, a UN expert said in a report issued Wednesday.

The report by Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, tracks how that country’s ruling military council has been able to continue procuring arms by shifting suppliers of financial services and military hardware as previous sources have been blocked by sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and other states. Bank of Thailand sees economic stability from Q3

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) expects the economy to start stabilizing from the third quarter thanks to accelerated growth and potential to meet the 2.6% expansion target this year. Senior BOT executives voiced these optimistic views at the second Monetary Policy Forum for this year on Wednesday.

Bank of Thailand Forecasts Modest Growth for Remainder of 2024

The Bank of Thailand anticipates slower economic growth in the upcoming third and fourth quarters, attributing this to a high base effect. Thailand Targets 2.4 Million Indian Tourists with Visa-Free Policy

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has revised its target for Indian tourist arrivals from 2.3 to 2.4 million this year, spurred by the recently introduced visa-free policy for Indian nationals. New foreign business investment rises 58% in first 5 months

Investment by new foreign businesses rose 58% in the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year, the Department of Business Development announced on Tuesday.

Newly registered foreign firms rose 16% to 317 and invested a combined 71.702 billion baht in Thailand from January to May 2024. They hired 1,212 Thai employees, a fall of 60% from the 2,999 Thais hired by new foreign firms during the same period of last year. Continued …

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)’s Automotive Industry Club announced on Tuesday that Thailand’s auto production in the month of May had dropped by 16.2% year on year to 126,161 vehicles.

Public cloud spending set to soar

Worldwide end-user spending on public cloud services is forecast to grow by 20.4% to $675 billion in 2024, from $561 billion in 2023, according to the latest forecast from Gartner Inc. The growth is being driven by demand for generative AI (GenAI) and application modernization.

“It is upsetting the Thai tax authorities want to double tax expatriate retirees, etc. As most of us live on a fixed income, it is already difficult to pay for food, rent, utilities, etc.

“Many of us pay heavily to support a Thai family and outside relatives with consistent monetary support. Now we are to be burdened with additional taxation? In many countries where we originated from, we are already taxed heavily and every dollar counts.

“This new idea of double taxing expatriates will have unintended consequences for Thai revenue aspirations. Many retired people will not be able to pay more tax than they already are already paying in their home countries. Or, even if they are able, they will deeply resent being double taxed. This idea of double taxation will have unintended consequences for the Thai economy.

“Many of us who have bought homes and condos will sadly be leaving Thailand. Some of us who support entire Thai families will reluctantly be doing the same. Those who are renting homes or apartments can leave more easily. The Thai economy will be impacted by the exodus of retired expats. This is an ill conceived idea but I am sure this Thai double tax will continue to be enacted by the Thai tax enforcers.

“Many foreigners who have lived in Thailand for years or even decades will soon leave Thailand, and not look back. It feels like the Thai government, by double taxing us, does not want foreigner retirees to live in Thailand. If that is their goal then they will surely succeed.” – Left Already

(Editor note: Scores of countries already have tax agreements with Thailand that will protect expats living in Thailand from the planned tax. The author apparently hails from a country that does not have such a tax treaty with Thailand. Expats from those countries will definitely feel the effects.)

Lots of rain forecast for Hua Hin

The Thailand Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning, forecasting heavy rain for Hua Hin over the next week.

Thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rainfall in some places such as Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung. Temperatures will range from 23-27°C at the minimum and 31-34°C at the maximum.

Thailand mulls allowing foreigners to buy 75% of condo units

The Thai Cabinet has tasked the Interior Ministry with amending the Condominium Act to increase the foreign ownership limit in condominium projects from 49% to 75%. Additionally, they have been directed to modify the Land Act to allow foreigners to lease land for 99 years, up from the current 50 years.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated on Friday that the Land Act requires minimal changes. The existing law already permits a 50-year lease with an option to extend for another 50 years. Thailand has approved the collection of 7% value-added tax (VAT) on imported goods sold for less than 1,500 baht (US$40.93) from July to December, a finance ministry official said on Friday.

Golfing in Hua Hin

Few golf course deals can equal the one hatched on the Royal Hua Hin course in 1932. In the middle of a game, Siam’s King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) learned that a powerful alliance of bureaucrats and soldiers in Bangkok were demanding he replace his country’s 700-year old absolute monarchy with a constitutional one. Two black panthers were spotted by tourists at Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, calmly walking along the road to Panoen Thung without showing signs of fear toward vehicles. Mongkol Chaiphakdee, head of Kaeng Krachan National Park, confirmed that a tourist named Amy captured the rare sighting near Kilometer 20 on the way to Panoen Thung.

Covid-infected PM visits Hua Hin Airport

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin conducted another inspection of Hua Hin Airport on Sunday, providing an update on the redevelopment plans announced last month. The redevelopment includes a major expansion and renaming the airport to “Phetch Hua Hin” airport.

The prime minister highlighted the progress, stating, “The Phetch-Hua Hin airport has made significant progress. We are moving towards becoming an aviation hub and tourism hub. Previously, I inspected the readiness and expedited the runway expansion here. Today, I took some time during the holidays to check the readiness again because AirAsia now offers commercial flights on the Hua Hin-Chiang Mai route with one flight per day. Heavy Rains and High Waves Forecast in 39 Provinces

Thai Baht Leads Decline as Asian Currencies Dip Amid Quiet Trade

Emerging Asian currencies faltered in today’s holiday-thinned trade, with the Thai baht bearing the brunt of the decline. The U.S. dollar’s continued strength and mixed Chinese economic data have further exacerbated the downward trend.

Ambassadors from eight Islamic Cooperation countries explore potential of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat/

Ambassadors from eight Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries visited Thailand’s southern border provinces recently to study the multicultural society and potential for trade, investment, tourism and education.

The delegation included ambassadors from Brunei, Egypt and Iran, as well as chargés d’affaires from Malaysia, Nigeria, and the Maldives. Joining them were deputy chiefs of mission from Indonesia and Uzbekistan, along with Thai ambassadors to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Turkey. The OIC comprises 57 members. Thailand arrests 26,000 undocumented workers, 20,111 from Myanmar

The Thai Labor Department announced that over 26,000 undocumented foreign workers from Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam were arrested within a week.

As part of the Thai government’s 120-day crackdown on illegal workers, Thai authorities inspected 1,774 factories, workplaces, and job sites across Thailand from June 5 to June 12. These inspections led to the arrests of a large number of undocumented foreign workers. Continued …

Decade-Old Rice Auction Fetches Nearly 300 Million Baht

In a significant move by the Public Warehouse Organization (PWO), 10-year-old rice stocks from Thailand’s Yingluck administration’s rice pledging scheme have been successfully auctioned. The auction saw considerable interest, reflecting the rice’s maintained quality despite a decade in storage.

V8 Intertrading Co., based in Kamphaeng Phet, emerged as the top bidder for rice stored in two warehouses located in Surin province. Central bank unfazed by factory closures

The Bank of Thailand says new business registrations still outnumber factory and business closures, with no adverse impact yet on the country’s employment figures.

According to Piti Disyatat, assistant governor for the monetary policy group at the central bank and secretary of the Monetary Policy Committee, the central bank is not concerned about factory and business closures, as the number is lower than new business registrations. Continued … 

280,000 workforce targeted in high-tech sectors over 5 years

Thailand aims to create a workforce of 280,000 in advanced industries over the next five years, along with an ecosystem that supports new investments, to help the country become a high-tech hub, the government said on Monday.

The government wants to produce a workforce of 80,000 in the semiconductor industry, 150,000 in electric vehicles (EVs) and 50,000 in artificial intelligence (AI), it said in a statement. Continued … 

Reversal? Digital wallet funds to exclude mobile phones

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat urged the Commerce Ministry to reconsider its decision to permit recipients of the 10,000-baht payout from the digital wallet scheme to use the funds on mobile phones. He argued that this move would not benefit the domestic economy as intended.

Land prices high in Phuket, but real estate continues to be in high demand

Speaking at the seminar “Investment Opportunities in Phuket Real Estate–Latest Market Trends” held on June 14 at the Novotel Phuket City Phokeethra Hotel, Sopon Pornchokchai of the Thai Real Estate Research and Valuation Center, Agency for Real Estate Affairs Co., lamented that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find land in Phuket due to the ever-rising cost of land.

“Based on a survey of market land prices from 2004 to 2024, we see that land prices have increased on average by 7.47 times, or 10.7% annually, which is quite high compared to other areas in Thailand,” he said. Continued …

Tourism compensation scheme to be extended until end of year

The Tourism and Sports Ministry wants to extend compensation for injured and deceased tourists to the end of this year after only 3.9 million baht from the 50 million allocated for the scheme was used.

Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanit said the compensation was disbursed to seven eligible cases, comprising four deaths and three injuries, out of 50 applications that the ministry received. Continued …

Tourism Ministry Seeks 1 Billion Baht for New Routes

The primary goal is to develop new tourism routes linking major cities to 55 notable destinations and enhance existing infrastructure, including the improvement of restrooms in these secondary cities.

This ambitious proposal aims to foster long-term tourism strategies, ensuring that both local and international visitors have a significantly improved travel experience. While the focus is on internal developments and events, the ministry isn’t seeking additional funds for international marketing. 2 foreign men, 1 Thai woman drown off Phuket beaches

The bodies of an American citizen and a Thai woman were found on Mai Khao beach in Phuket on Monday, police said, while a Russian man drowned off Surin beach on Sunday.
