State revenue grows 2.1% in first months of fiscal year

The Revenue Department reported its revenue collection in the first two months of fiscal 2025 grew 2.1% year-on-year, attributed to efforts to bring individuals outside the tax system into compliance and stricter enforcement of tax evasion measures.

British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

British man’s Thai-high trip goes up in smoke at Manchester customs

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Demand for nursing homes and residences for the elderly has surged as Thailand has entered an aged society, according to results of a survey by the Real Estate Information Center (REIC) released on Sunday.

Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

Collision on Chao Phraya River Near Bangkok Bridge, One Boat Sinks

A boat collision occurred on the Chao Phraya River near the Bangkok Bridge yesterday, resulting in one vessel sinking and damage to five others. Police officers from Bang Kho Laem Police Station, along with the Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department and the Marine Department, were dispatched to the scene to investigate.

1,000 arrests made in crackdown on proxies

More than 1,000 Thai and foreign nationals have been rounded up in a joint operation by police and commerce ministry authorities for the use of Thai nominees by foreign businesses over the past few weeks, authorities said on Wednesday.

Thailand’s headline inflation rose by 0.95% in November, driven by rising diesel prices and higher cost of food and beverages, the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) reported on Wednesday.

Steel Beam Collapse on Rama II Road Death Toll Rises to Six

The construction incident on Rama II Road has claimed the lives of six people, as rescue and recovery efforts are expected to take two to three days. Authorities have temporarily closed the road and diverted traffic and advised motorists to avoid the area.

Samut Sakhon Gov. Narit Niramaivong and other key officials, including Lt. Col. Santhiti Thammajai from the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, inspected the site. “Our priority is clearing the debris and restoring traffic on this vital route, which serves many commuters,” said Narit. Thai factory output down 0.91% y/y in October, seen rising in 2025

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 0.91% in October from a year earlier, the industry ministry said on Wednesday, falling less than analysts’ expectations. The figure compared with a forecast fall of 1.85% for October in a Reuters poll, and followed an annual drop of 3.51% in September.

Factory output for the first 10 months of 2024 contracted 1.63% from a year earlier, and the ministry forecast it would fall 1.6% for the full year. Output has been weighed down by weaker car production and high household debt that has crimped domestic spending, the ministry said. Continued …

Public Bus Accidents in Thailand Surge by 46.5%

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has revealed a sharp 46.5% increase in accidents involving public buses in 2023. Buses accounted for the highest proportion of these incidents, with 73.0% of cases, driven by driver errors and poorly maintained, aging vehicles. Additionally, unsafe vehicle modifications have exacerbated the risk.

Public transport remains essential, particularly in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, where over 968 million trips were recorded in 2022. However, a troubling rise in fatalities and injuries was reported, with casualties from public bus accidents increasing by more than 105% compared to 2022. Continued …

Power tariff to be capped until next April

In an extension of the government’s current policy, Thailand’s energy minister plans to cap the power tariff until April next year. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Monday that the policy was to keep the average power tariff at no more than 4.18 baht per unit.

It has been implemented for almost a year. The 4.18-baht power tariff rate set by the Energy Regulatory Commission will expire at the end of this year. Continued …

Police arrested politician Samart Janechaijittawanich in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai on Monday, after he was wanted for alleged money laundering in connection with The iCon Group fraud case.

Unemployment rises by 1.02% in third quarter

Thailand’s unemployment rate in the third quarter this year stood at 1.02%, increasing from 0.99% recorded for the same period in 2023, with about 410,000 Thais unemployed, a 3.2% increase year on year, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its report on Thai society’s outlook for Q3/2024.

The third quarter unemployment rate is, however, an improvement over the 1.07% recorded in the previous quarter, which was a two-year high, NESDC said. Continued …

Thailand’s household debt falls for the first time in 42 months

Thailand’s household debt dropped in the second quarter of this year to 89.6% of GDP, from 90.7% in the first quarter, which is the first fall in three and a half years, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), today.

Although the decrease is a healthy sign, he noted that household debt in Thailand is still higher than in other countries in the region, but added that if the rate of economic growth can be maintained, household debt is likely to improve accordingly. Continued …

Narong Yuenyonghattaporn, a retired civil servant in Bangkok, bought an electric car made by GAC Aion earlier this year. He’s part of a growing number of Thai drivers buying EVs sold by Chinese car companies but made in Thailand, a nation that’s become one of the front lines in the global battle for auto-market supremacy.

Thai October exports rise 14.6% y/y, above forecast

Thailand’s customs-cleared exports rose 14.6% in October from a year earlier, the commerce ministry said today, beating analysts’ expectations. The reading compared with a forecast 5.2% increase for October in a Reuters poll, and followed September’s 1.1% rise.

Exports totaled $27.22 billion, while imports amounted to $28.02 billion, the latter up 15.9% from a year earlier, the ministry said. Exports, a key driver of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, were boosted by stronger shipments of technology-related products, particularly computers, equipment, and components, the ministry said. Chinese firms prep Bt90 billion in Thailand investments

Chinese entrepreneurs are expected to make new investments worth 90 billion baht as they are increasingly concerned about the impact of the incoming U.S. president’s plan to impose high tariffs on Chinese exports, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Starting today, petrol and gasohol prices are set to climb by 30 satang per liter, courtesy of PTT Station’s latest price tweak. In contrast, diesel users can breathe a slight sigh of relief as their prices remain untouched.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for south

THAI Airways to fly wide-body jets on domestic routes this December

In a move that’s sure to delight frequent flyers, Thai Airways (THAI) revealed plans to swap its A320s for wide-bodied aircraft on select domestic routes this December, just in time for the peak holiday season. The airline is ramping up capacity to accommodate the soaring demand during the Christmas-to-New Year rush, from Dec. 20 to 31.

While official word from THAI’s communications team is still pending, several travel sources, including Nation Online, have confirmed the changes. Starting in early December, Boeing 777s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Airbus A330s will replace the smaller A320s on key domestic routes, including those to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Hotel booze rules relaxed over New Year’s

Hotel guests will be allowed to order alcoholic drinks to their rooms from in-house bars and restaurants around the clock over the New Year, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The new rule was approved by the board, chaired by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, when it met on Monday.

Thunderstorms possible tomorrow

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in certain areas. Bangkok and central regions are expected to experience the most severe conditions, affecting 22 provinces in total.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms are expected in 30% of the area, with heavy rain, particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 34°C. Easterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h. The sea will have waves lower than 1 meter, but thunderstorms may cause waves to exceed 2 meters. Continued …

Lax Law Enforcement Cited for Alarming Road Fatalities in Thailand

Advocates are raising concerns about insufficient enforcement of road safety laws, which they believe is significantly contributing to Thailand’s staggering road fatality rate. On average, the country registers around 48 road deaths daily.

Speaking at a recent event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, advocates pressed for immediate improvements in law enforcement. The event, supported by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center, threw light on Thailand’s grim statistics. Facebook scams cost 718 million baht in Thailand last year

Facebook scams and fraudulent activities have inflicted significant financial damage, totaling 718 million baht over the past year, according to the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong.

Highlighting the efforts of the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center (AOC) during a recent briefing, Prasert revealed the center’s impact from Nov. 1 last year to Nov. 14 this year, during which it received over 1.17 million complaints via the 1441 hotline. Continued …

500,000 krathong floats collected in Bangkok waterways

A total of 514,590 krathong floats were collected from Bangkok waterways after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down 19.6% from last year. Lat Krabang district saw the highest number of floats.

On Saturday, officials from the Department of Environment, the Department of Drainage and Sewerage and all 50 district offices completed the collection and sorting of the floats around 5am Saturday, having started at 8pm Friday. Continued …

Pattaya authorities and fishermen collect debris after Loy Krathong Festival

Officials from the Pattaya Environmental Department, along with local fishermen, launched a clean-up operation along the Pattaya Beach at 3 M on Nov. 16. The team worked together to collect krathong (floating lantern) debris along a 5-kilometer stretch of the beach, including Jomtien Beach.

The clean-up effort came in the aftermath of the Loy Krathong Festival, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, when both Thai and international tourists participated in the traditional ritual of floating krathongs to pay respects to the goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Though Miss Thailand, Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri, won fourth place in Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico on Sunday, several fans in Thailand praised her for her achievement in the final round. A 21-year-old Phuket native, her family runs a hotel in the southern island province. She is currently studying in Thammasat University’s Faculty of Political Science. Escaped Monkeys Cause Mayhem at Thai Police Station in Lop Buri

In a bizarre turn of events, approximately 200 monkeys broke free from their enclosure at the Pho Khao Ton monkey nursery, located in Lop Buri’s Muang district, and made their way to the nearby Tha Hin police station. The incident unfolded on Saturday evening, causing significant commotion and surprising both residents and law enforcement officers.

The nursery, which houses about 300 monkeys captured from Lop Buri’s streets, faced an unforeseen challenge when the cage structure failed to contain its inhabitants. Curing loneliness

Studies have shown that loneliness and isolation can have a negative health impact, comparable to risks associated with smoking up to 15 cigarettes or drinking six glasses of alcohol per day.

According to a report by the National Economic and Social Development Council, the number of Thais who received mental health services increased from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023. Between Oct. 1, 2023, and April 22, 2024, it was found that 17.2% of Thais were at risk of depression, 15.5% experienced high levels of stress and 10.6% were at risk of suicide. Continued …

The U.S. Embassy in Thailand celebrated the completion of a landmark 12-year restoration project at Wat Chaiwatthanaram on Loy Krathong Day, marking one of the largest cultural preservation initiatives ever undertaken by the U.S. government in Thailand.

Stimulus package slated for year-end

The government is poised to introduce an economic booster package at year-end, extending into 2025. Q3 GDP up 3% y/y, above forecast

The Thai economy expanded 3% in the third quarter from a year earlier, official data showed today, beating the median forecast of 2.6% growth in a Reuters poll of analysts.

The popular full moon party and the Loy Krathong festival on Koh Phangan drew more than 9,000 tourists on Friday night, with the situation returning to normal by morning despite rumors of a possible threat to Israeli tourists on the island.

Environment board to enforce Euro 6 standard on petrol engines

The National Environment Board has resolved to enforce the Euro 6 standards for petrol internal combustion engines (ICE) from Jan. 1 next year, Industry Minister Akanat Promphan said on Sunday.

During its third meeting for this year on Friday, the NEB had emission standards for ICE engines on its agenda, Akanat said.
