Satellite images show there are some 600 hotspots in Thailand, mostly on forested land, and more than 4,000 in Cambodia, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Agency (GISTDA) said.

Thailand welcomed 128,969 foreign visitors on Feb. 8, two days ahead of this year’s Chinese New Year, while total foreign arrivals this year nearly reached 4 million, Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said on Saturday.

Boat Carrying Chinese Tourists Capsizes, All Safely Rescued

A long-tail boat carrying seven Chinese tourists plus the vessel’s crew members capsized off Krabi yesterday, but fortunately all were safely rescued by a passing boat. The accident occurred near Koh Lao Lading island, around 300 meters from Koh Hong, with the two islands being part of Krabi’s Than Bok Khorani National Park.

Koh Samui Sees Increase in Visitors Following Visa Exemptions

Wiwat Chuenban, the chairman of the Surat Thani Provincial Tourism Industry Council, revealed an increasing number of foreign and Thai tourists visiting Koh Samui in January and February.

After a visa exemption for Chinese tourists, there were four direct flights from Chengdu, China, to Surat Thani in one week. There was also a direct flight route from Taiwan to Surat Thani, as well, resulting in a surging number of bookings of more than 672 hotels, and 25,000 rooms were reserved, according to Wiwat. 5,000 Chinese tourists a day on Phuket over Chinese New Year

Chinese tourists have descended on Phuket to celebrate Chinese New Year, pushing hotel occupancy on the island to 81%. Phuket has long been a popular destination for Chinese travelers due its strong Chinese heritage and ancestry.

The director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the number of Chinese arrivals has jumped to between 4,000 and 5,000 a day. Lertchai Wangtrakuldee says this is the highest number of arrivals of any nationality and the island expects to see revenue of 6.8 billion baht from the holiday period. Continued …

A 35-year-old Chinese man on vacation with his family in Pattaya for the Chinese New Year reportedly fell to his death from a condo in north Pattaya yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at approximately 2pm at a condo in central Pattaya whose name has been withheld pending further investigation.

The victim, identified by his family to the press and police as 35-year-old Yuanhui Lai, had reportedly fallen to his death from the balcony of a rented condo on the 18th floor of the condominium. Continued …

Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to increase after third runway is operational in July

The construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in time for its use in July, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said Sunday. Once the new runway is in use, the airport capacity will be increased from 67 flights per hour to 94 flights per hour, Suriya added.

8-year-old becomes the youngest to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand

Water sports history was written yesterday when eight-year-old Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen became the youngest to windsurf 107 kilometers (66 miles) across the Gulf of Thailand – a claim to fame he most wanted as a gift for his ninth birthday this coming Sunday. It was a case of “third time lucky” for Shane, whose two previous attempts at the epic crossing were scuppered by poor wind conditions.

The boy wonder achieved his kite foil crossing in just four hours and 10 minutes – the fastest time yet for windsurfers of any age. He even beat the four hours and 45 minutes crossing time recorded by a jetskier. Thailand’s wee windsurfing wizard was flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and landed at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Unsafe levels of smog cover upper Thailand

 

Forty-eight from all 77 provinces, especially those in the northeast, experienced hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported at 10am that 13 provinces were blanketed by red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.8 to 97.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Young organ donor saves lives after death in Hua Hin

Doctors from Hua Hin Hospital and the Thai Red Cross Society have posthumously honored a 13-year-old patient for donating organs following his tragic death.

Patcharaphon Srilert, 13, from Hua Hin recently passed away from a brain aneurysm, with his family choosing to donate his organs to assist numerous patients awaiting treatment. The donated organs, which include the liver, kidneys, and heart valves, were transported from Hua Hin Hospital to Chulalongkorn Hospital by the Thai Red Cross. Continued …

New policies raise prices paid for agricultural products

The prices paid for several agricultural products have increased in the past six months thanks to the Commerce Ministry’s new policies, Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said on Thursday

Phumtham, who is also a a deputy prime minister, said that in the past six months the prices of Hom Mali and sticky rice rose by 12%, tapioca by 49%, oil palm by 9%, rubber by 22%, corn for animal feed by 6%, shallot up 27%, and oranges by 57%. 44.3% jump in spending for inbound Chinese New Year bookings

Data from leading global travel service provider Trip.com Group has revealed that Thailand will see an increase of 44.3% in total trip expenditure for inbound bookings when comparing this year’s Chinese New Year (CNY) festive period with 2023’s CNY period, with expenditure for outbound travelers increasing by 70.8%.

The increase in spending may be attributed to Southeast Asian tourists taking longer trips, traveling beyond Southeast Asia for the 2024 Chinese New Year period. Largest ‘Wai Khru’ Muay Thai ritual wins Guinness World Record

To celebrate Muay Thai Day and promote the country’s iconic martial art as a soft power, the “Amazing Muay Thai World Festival 2024” was launched on Tuesday at Rajabhakti Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin at the well-known tourist attraction in Hua Hin district.

Organized by the Royal Thai Army and private partners, the event was joined by 5,000 Muay Thai fighters from the army and the Muay Thai Prajawsuea Sport Assn. for the Wai Khru ritual to pay respect to Muay Thai masters. The ceremony on Tuesday was recorded as the world’s biggest Wai Khru Muay Thai ceremony in the Guinness World Records. Continued …

Hua Hin’s Pone Kingpetch honored at Muay Thai Festival

The Amazing Muay Thai World Festival 2024, a celebration of Thai boxing heritage, also served as a platform to honor Hua Hin’s own Pone Kingpetch, Thailand’s first boxing world champion, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2023.

Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wutikul was presented with a certificate of honor from the World Boxing Council Asia (WBC Asia) recognizing Kingpetch’s historic achievement. Kingpetch, born Mana Seedokbuab in 1935, started his boxing career in Hua Hin and went on to defeat numerous seasoned champions. Continued …

8-year-old to attempt to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand again today

All eight-year-old Shane wants for his next birthday is the claim to fame that he has windsurfed across the Gulf of Thailand from Hua Hin to Pattaya – a trip of 107 kilometers (66 miles). Today is the big day because wind conditions are finally right for Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen of Pattaya to take up the challenge – just 3 days before his ninth birthday on Feb. 11.

Young Shane excels at “wing foiling” and “kite foiling” – a hydro-foil lifts the board above the water – and plans to enter international competitions this year on an ambitious journey to becoming the youngest wing foiling world champion and representing Thailand at the Olympics.

This will be his third attempt to scud across the Gulf of Thailand, in the hope weather conditions won’t let him down this time. His last attempt was scuppered on Jan. 24, when the wind dropped suddenly after 50 km had been covered.

Thailand’s intrepid windsurfing star-in-the-making will be flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and will land at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Hazardous air pollution hits Bangkok and Thai provinces

Bangkok and 11 other provinces in Thailand are currently grappling with hazardous air quality levels, exacerbated by PM2.5 particulate matter exceeding standard thresholds.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, alongside the National Research Council of Thailand, the Pollution Control Department, Kasetsart University, and Chiang Mai University, are monitoring the situation on an hourly basis through satellite data available on the Air4Thai application. Ministry to roll out ‘dust-free’ hospital rooms for PM2.5 patients

The Ministry of Public Health says it plans to provide “dust-free” hospital rooms for at-risk patients in 30 provinces following a rise in the number of people affected by PM2.5.

The Public Health Ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, said more than 10,000 patients were reported to have been affected by the fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) over the past four months, with 1,407 needing emergency care. Continued …

37 protected forests off-limits to outsiders to prevent bush fires

Thirty-seven protected forests, including several wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, have been declared off-limits to outsiders without prior permission to enter, as the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation ramps up its efforts to reduce bush fires and ease airborne pollution as the dry season approaches.

The department’s director-general, Atthaphon Charoenchansa, said yesterday that the department has set a target to reduce forest fires this coming dry season to half those of last summer, to ease the problem of PM2.5 pollution. Continued …

Dengue fever becoming big problem in Thailand, 8,000+ infected this month

The Disease Control Department (DCD) warned people to protect themselves against mosquito bites, saying dengue fever has become a serious problem, with over 8,000 infected and 13 patients killed, so far.

Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn, DCD director-general, said as many as 8,197 people had been diagnosed with dengue in January, marking a 91.3% increase from January last year, when 4,286 people were infected. Continued …

Much Ado About Elephant Pants

Over the past several days, various Thai politicians and government officials have made headlines, at least on Thai language news, with consistent updates on what they call a pressing issue – elephant pants. Specifically, their concerns have been around illegal imports of the elephant pants from China and how Thai officials feel the prices are undercutting those of Thai-made elephant pants.

Thailand considers elephant pants, commonly seen on tourists and especially backpackers, as a “soft power” and fashion symbol for the country. Well, at least some Thai officials do, not everyone is fond of the elephant pants or believe they are particularly fashionable according to recent conflicting and unconfirmed reports from Thailand’s Soft Power Fashion Committee. Thai Elephant Pants Makers Are Confident In Competing With China

The issue about elephant pants “Made in China” taking over half of the Thai market has caused the Thai government to take action against goods that violate intellectual property rights.

Kingkarn Samorn, managing director of Shinrada Garment Co., a major manufacturer and distributor of elephant pants in Thailand, said the company is not affected by the Chinese production of elephant pants and their export to Thailand. Continued …

Interior Ministry Initiates Draft Gun Amnesty Regulations

The Ministry of Interior has assigned the Department of Provincial Administration to draft an emergency decree, which fundamentally allows for the return of firearms within a specified time frame, with the owners of such firearms not facing any legal repercussions, following the directive from the prime minister.

New cannabis bill ready for cabinet. Rec use is out

A new version of the cannabis and hemp control bill will be proposed at the cabinet meeting next week, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Tuesday.

Corruption potential in the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme

Despite potential warnings from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), the government has confirmed plans to proceed with the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat agreed to let the digital wallet policy committee begin work next week.

The focus of the forthcoming meeting will be on the potential for corruption during the handout process and the strategic planning involved. BOI reports 43% surge in 2023 investment applications; FDI projects soar

The Board of Investment (BOI) announced that applications for investment promotion in 2023 reached a five-year high of 848.3 billion baht, an increase of 43% from the previous year, led by large foreign investments in the five priority sectors in the BOI’s new investment promotion strategy.

Lifting of afternoon alcohol sales ban being considered

The Thai government is considering lifting the afternoon prohibition on alcohol sales in a bid to boost its tourism industry. Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew is planning to ask the government’s alcohol control committee to discuss the appeal by the Thai Alcohol Beverage Business Assn. (TABBA) to revoke the rule that restricts alcohol sales between 2pm and 5pm.

The afternoon ban is not strictly a part of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act but was implemented by a coup-maker in 1972, Dr. Cholnan stated. Continued …

Navy Shelves Project To Salvage Sunken Corvette Sukhothai

The Navy has put an open bidding on hold for the planned retrieval of the sunken navy corvette c (FSG-442) from under the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan for the time being.

January headline CPI drops 1.11% y/y, lowest in nearly 3 years

Ancient marine animal fossils dating back more than 250 million years have been found in Phetchabun, not far from Si Thep ancient town.

A high-pressure system or moderate cold air mass continues to cover Thailand and the South China Sea, leading to cooler morning temperatures across several regions of the country. The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) forecast that the north, northeast, central, eastern, and upper southern parts will experience cold weather in the mornings.

Tourist Speedboat Collides with Reef, 12 Tourists and 3 Crewmates Rescued

On Wednesday, the Trat Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Center (CARDC) received an emergency report of a speedboat colliding with a reef, causing a shipwreck 16 miles away from the Laem Thian area, Koh Kood, Trat.

Court orders government to form urgent plan to address PM2.5

The Administrative Court in Chiang Mai yesterday ordered Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the National Environment Board to draw up an emergency plan within 90 days to deal with the PM2.5 pollution problem in northern provinces and to develop short- and long-term plans to deal with it.

Split-second decision saved mother’s life at Suphan Buri fireworks plant

As Thailand and the province of Suphan Buri, just to the northwest of Bangkok, mourn the deaths of 23 people in a catastrophic firework explosion, it emerged that one fortunate woman survived. Namfon Bunkom, in a tizzy, just minutes before the explosion, hastily departed the building. Her son, who normally collected money from her, had failed to turn up and was at home instead.

500kg of explosives in storage at factory

Authorities estimate that the fireworks factory in Suphan Buri may have had at least 500 kilograms of explosive materials stored in its compound before the blast on Wednesday afternoon.

The explosion occurred at village Moo 3 in tambon Salakhao of Muang district at about 3.30pm, killing 23 workers instantly. The explosion also caused damage to four houses located about 300 meters from the factory. Continued …

The 14.8 million tons of mineral resources discovered recently in Phang Nga province may not be entirely lithium, a rare mineral that is a key component for making batteries for electric vehicles, a government official clarified today.

Thailand halts poultry imports from Belgium, France

Thailand has suspended poultry imports from Belgium and three provinces of France in a bid to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The announcement by the Department of Livestock Development, published in the Royal Gazette on Thursday, will be in effect for nine days.

The move follows a World Organization for Animal Health report on the spread of HPAI in both countries.
