Hotel entrepreneur cites Hua Hin’s possibilities

C9 Hotelworks is involved in everything from resorts and city hotels to ultra luxury private villas, all the way to glamping resorts, private islands, and branded residences in places like the Maldives. C9 Hotelworks founder Bill Barnett offered these remarks in a recent interview concerning Thailand’s real estate possibilities.

Question: When you look beyond traditional mainstream markets like Bangkok, Phuket and Bali, where do you see exciting things happening in real estate?

I always think it’s interesting to look within a short distance of capital areas where people are going. Khao Yai outside of Bangkok is one example where things are happening. And I think Hua Hin will continue to transform.

Hua Hin is interesting because the international school and infrastructure — the highway — have grown along with it. That’s creating a new market for people to live there full-time. It’s transforming from a holiday or retirement place into something where people want to live. Continued …

Millions of us eat soy sauce regularly. Is it bad for you?

Few foods are as versatile as soy sauce. The global soy sauce market is so popular that it’s valued at 48.1 billion in 2022 – a valuation that may nearly double by 2032, according to one estimate. “Soy sauce offers salt, umami and a hint of sweetness that plays nicely with many foods,” says Caroline Susie, a registered dietician and national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. However, according to Eric Maskin, Adams University professor at Harvard’s Department of Economics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, its evolvement has also brought several economic challenges, especially a rise in income inequality and market failures due to carbon emissions.

A 2007 Nobel Laureate in economics for his work in laying the foundations of mechanism design theory, Maskin recently shared his thoughts on social inequality while explaining how the Thai government should prioritize policies amid the economic slowdown and climate change. Continued …

But there are up to 15 critically endangered Indo-Chinese leopards and sick and elderly tigers that still need rescue right now or face life in a zoo (if they survive). These are wild creatures who have lived chained and beaten their entire lives.

Last year, we told you that a horror big-cat breeding facility in Thailand had been shut down, and its resident cats were in urgent need of relocation to our partner sanctuary. We were there in December when the first 15 rescued big cats arrived at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). Some were so sick, weak, tortured and emaciated that even one more day’s delay in their relocation could have made the difference between life and death. Continued …

The intensifying accumulation of PM2.5 pollutants, according to Preeyaporn Suwanakate, the PCD’s director-general, is a consequence of compromised air circulation in several areas across the city. The Evolving Landscape of Cannabis in Thailand

In June 2022, Thailand marked a significant shift in its drug policy by becoming the first country in Asia to fully decriminalize cannabis. This bold move stood in stark contrast to the stringent drug laws prevalent in neighboring countries like Singapore, where drug trafficking can result in the death penalty, and Hong Kong, where even non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) is illegal.

Previously, in 2018, Thailand had already taken a progressive step by legalizing medical marijuana, but the 2022 decriminalization allowed for broader use of cannabis and hemp products, especially in treating illnesses. Continued …

Pot industry pushes back against draft law

The cannabis industry is pushing back at Pheu Thai’s efforts to again criminalize the drug for recreational purposes. This week, Minister of Public Health Dr. Cholnan Srikaew was forced to clarify that a hard line draft bill signed by him was not final. The minister said it was a draft position prepared by his industry for the prime minister’s office.

However, the final law to be presented to parliament would, first of all, be agreed by the cabinet. The bill, which is to be treated as financial legislation, therefore has become one of political importance. In view of the contrast between the policies of the Pheu Thai Party and its coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai Party, the issue has the potential to become as politically divisive as it is within society. Led by a record 60% increase in the 2023/24 fiscal year budget of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Thai government is positioning the tourism industry as “the primary engine of economic growth” this year. However, those hopes are likely to be dashed in the event of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

A detailed analysis of the Thai budget bill, currently going through Parliament, shows that the budget allocation for the TAT is up from 3,258 million baht in fiscal year 2022/23 (beginning in October) to 5,201 million baht in fiscal year 2023/24, the largest percentage increase of any government agency. Poll reveals youth expectations on Thai Children’s Day

Concert and music performance are the most popular Children’s Day activities, while top music artists are the individuals Thai youths are most interested to meet in person, according to a poll jointly conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Suan Dusit Poll. In Thailand, Children’s Day is observed on the second Saturday of January, which falls on Jan. 13 this year.

The Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for hosting Children’s Day activities nationwide, collaborated with Suan Dusit Poll to survey public opinion about Children’s Day this year. A total of 21,627 children nationwide — 58.6% males and 41.4% females — participated in the survey. Continued …

Phayam Island children’s struggle to school spurs calls for new bridge

Children in Phayam Island in the Ranong province have been struggling to reach their schools due to the lack of a bridge. An online post appealing for help has sparked a call for government intervention, suggesting that before the economic bridge is built, these children need assistance.

“Can we gift them a bridge for Children’s Day? Can we pay attention to this issue? When the tide rises, they have to ride a boat to school, but when the tide falls, they need to wade through water to return home because boats cannot operate.” Continued …

Thailand and Cambodia join forces to tackle transboundary haze pollution

Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday unveiled plans to form a joint task force with Cambodia to combat transboundary haze pollution. The decision was made ahead of a scheduled meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet set to take place in Thailand on Feb. 7.

The leaders will undertake a joint study tour to Sa Kaeo province, an area severely impacted by PM2.5 transboundary pollution. The pollution in Thailand’s border provinces, typically caused by wildfires, necessitates coordination with neighboring countries for effective management. Continued …

Pollution Has a Class Problem in Thailand and Beyond

From February to April of 2023, it was an almost daily occurrence in Thailand: a thick blanket of haze sat atop communities. The haze was a result of the toxic air quality, one of the country’s worst years on record.

This is far from an isolated trend. Even higher-income nations, such as the United States, can’t escape the effects of air pollution. In 2023, the United States experienced its worst air quality in recent history as wildfire smoke from Canada and California drifted across the country. Continued …

Man’s best friend? New research shows that pets can carry dangerous pathogens

A wheezing black dog drags its owner up the stairs, into a clinic awash with furry patients. In one pram a chihuahua is dozing, while a golden retriever nearby circles restlessly before settling down on the tiled floor.

Most of the pampered pets in the waiting room at this multistorey veterinary center in downtown Bangkok are not here for anything unusual. Some need vaccinations, others have ear infections or cancer. Continued …

Navigating the rise in sexually transmitted infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections people can get from certain types of sexual activities. There are many such varieties of infections out there, with names like HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes viruses, human papillomavirus (HPV), and now monkeypox (more recently renamed as MPOX).

A series of reports have shown a concerning rise in STIs across the world, including in Thailand. Mortality from STIs is relatively rare in the modern world but the infections may contribute to significant morbidities. For example, the herpes virus is not typically life-threatening; however, it could cause recurrent painful outbreaks and contribute to an increased risk of HIV transmission. Continued …

Will Thailand’s digital wallet scheme rev up the economy?

The government is betting big on a unique economic stimulus: a 10,000-baht digital wallet for most Thais over the age of 16. But will this cash injection actually boost the economy, or simply fizzle out, leaving a huge public debt for taxpayers?

According to the World Bank, the answer hinges on one key question: how much will people spend? International studies cited by the bank suggest that the impact of such “helicopter money” depends on two main factors: Continued …

Ministry focuses on cheap energy

Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga vows to keep energy prices, including electricity and oil, low for households and businesses throughout this year as part of strenuous efforts to regulate power bills that remain elevated compared with neighboring countries.

Various measures such as excise tax reduction, price subsidy programs under the Oil Fuel Fund and help from national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc, as well as the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will be carried out to control energy prices. Continued …

Energy price dilemma: Politics are trumping economics

The government’s expressed determination to prevent a hike in energy prices during the last two months of 2023 was met with cheers from the public and dismay from the Energy Regulatory Commission, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and related agencies.

Obviously, keeping energy prices stable is good politics. But is it also bad economics? My answer is a resounding “yes”. Let me explain why. Continued …

Nissan failed to recognize how quickly Thais would turn to EVs

Thais have traditionally preferred Japanese cars for their personal vehicles, but in the competitive EV market, China is winning, hands down.

One of the reasons is, of course, price: Since 2018, thanks to the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, electric cars imported from China enjoy zero import duty. Continued …

Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) aims to grow its electric vehicle business in ASEAN after developing an EV production base in Thailand, which is scheduled to start selling locally made EVs this month.

The company is scheduled to announce its new business plan on Feb. 9, detailing the investment budget and new car models produced at its factory in Rayong province, said Narong Sritalayon, managing director of GWM. Continued …

A record-breaking 6.6 billion baht was generated by over 466 film shoots in Thailand in 2023, marking an impressive 40% increase in revenue from the previous year. This upturn was largely credited to the production of high-budget films, including a blockbuster with a budget of 3 billion baht.

Jaturon Phakdeewanit, the head of the Tourism Department, noted the significant role of large-scale productions in driving up spending within the country’s local supply chain. Consequently, the department plans to continue its strategy of attracting major productions to the country. Continued …

Will Srettha’s administration have the political will to stop smog problem?

Bangkok, a city famed for its cultural vibrancy and bustling street life, is now grappling with a persistent and dangerous environmental crisis: severe air pollution. At the heart of this crisis is the PM2.5 particulate matter, tiny particles that pose serious health risks due to their ability to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream.

The smog in Bangkok, characterized by high levels of PM2.5, is a complex issue, with agricultural burning to support large-scale corporate agricultural operations being a significant contributing factor. With the new government under Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin in power, there’s a pressing question: Will this administration confront the corporations that are implicated in these unhealthy practices? Electric mass transit pledge to zap pollution in Chiang Mai

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin pledged to foster the development of electric mass transit systems as a solution to the persistent air pollution issues plaguing the northern province. The Thai prime minister noted that the fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) levels had considerably decreased since his visit last year.

(Editor note: While Expat News is “all in” on electric vehicles – as long as the energy is supplied by renewable sources – the PM seems to be missing the boat on this decision. The main cause of the relentless smog is not fossil fuel-powered vehicles, it’s the burning of farm fields and waste. Is he, as the previous article suggests, avoiding the real problem because of corporate interests?)

The air quality has indeed improved since April of the previous year when the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected 302 hotspots, thereby escalating the situation to a critical level. The air pollution problem has adversely affected tourism in Chiang Mai, deterring both local and international tourists due to potential health risks. Continued …

Mixed reactions to Thailand’s proposed cannabis law from tourism industry

The recent draft law on cannabis and hemp, targeting to limit recreational use, is garnering mixed reactions from Thailand’s tourism industry. While it could potentially lead to the closure of several dispensaries, industry insiders feel it wouldn’t have a significant impact on the overall tourism landscape, as cannabis and hemp aren’t primary attractions for international visitors.

The bill, endorsed by Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew, aims to restrict the recreational consumption of cannabis and hemp, focusing primarily on medical use. The draft bill is awaiting Cabinet approval before being presented to the House of Representatives for review. Continued …

Thailand seeks public opinion on draft to end recreational cannabis use

Thailand is canvassing public opinion on a draft bill outlawing recreational use of cannabis after more than a year in which marijuana-related businesses flourished following legalization and insufficient regulation.

The first Southeast Asian nation to decriminalize cannabis in 2021, Thailand spawned an industry worth up to a projected $1.2 billion in the next few years, as thousands of dispensaries sprang up, along with spas, restaurants and festivals. Continued …

Thailand to boost tourism to drive economic growth

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is on a mission to stimulate tourism, focusing on boosting revenue in 55 secondary provinces by 20%, aiming for a grand total of 91 million trips this year. This ambitious goal, however, falls short of the mark for key provinces.

For the first nine months of the previous year, the 55 secondary tourism provinces attracted 73 million trips out of a total of 185 million. These journeys raked in revenue of 169 billion baht, contributing to the projected domestic revenue for the full year, set at 900 billion baht. Continued …
