Thailand needs economic reform, not stimulus

Following the pandemic-induced economic crisis of 2020-21, the new Thai government has been focused on boosting the rate of economic growth. Thailand’s economic growth has fallen more than Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia or Vietnam due to its high dependence on exports and the tourism sector.

In April, the World Bank lowered its growth forecast for the country to 2.8% this year, down from 3.2%, and slightly decreased its 2025 estimate to 3%. To address this issue, the Pheu Thai Party-led coalition government is actively seeking ways to increase growth. Continued …

Why these two celebrity chefs believe Thai cuisine is having its moment now

It’s about time that Thai food is fully recognized for the talent that Thai cooks exhibit. They’re damn fine cooks, they’re instinctive cooks and they are splendid cooks,” says David Thompson with his trademark vigor from his abode in Krabi.

It’s no surprise that the Australian-born, naturalized Brit is so vocal about the talent of Thai cooks — as one of foremost chefs in the Thai culinary space, Thompson has devoted his entire career to promoting the kingdom’s fiery gastronomy. Continued …

Tyrant’s days are numbered as Karen soldiers burn the hated Myanmar flag in Myawaddy

The revolution in Myanmar against the brutal junta regime took a huge step forward in the last week. On Monday, Karen soldiers pulled down the despised Myanmar flag only introduced in 2010 by the military. In short, they burned it and replaced it with a blue, white and red Karen Union flag.

The fall of Myawaddy was completed at the end of the week. It came when the 275th Battalion was routed under rocket, drone and grenade attack, further weakening the junta. Its already cratered economy lost a key border trading point, which, in turn, puts pressure on supplying Yangon, the country’s main city. Continued …

Authorities plan for potential energy cost surge amid Israel-Iran conflict

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has issued directives to state bodies to devise strategies to mitigate potential surges in energy costs in the event of an escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict.

The directive follows Iran’s missile and drone assault on Israel, a retaliatory move against Israel’s alleged attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus earlier this month. This marked the first direct attack by Iran on Israel in a longstanding shadow conflict, typically characterized by Iran launching assaults on Israel via terror proxies. Continued …

Inside the numbers: the potential of a Phuket property bubble

One of the most common questions I am asked these days is about a potential Phuket real estate bubble. While it’s a popular buzz term, so many who ask the question don’t understand what a bubble is.

The most notable real estate bubble in recent history was the subprime housing crisis in the United States in 2007. In other sectors, there have been bubbles like the dot.com crisis of 2000 and 2018’s crypto-crash. Continued …

Thailand eyes value of durian exports of 1 trillion baht

Thailand is preparing to enact legislation that will regulate the export of young durians in an attempt to serve markets with only the highest quality fruit. The move comes in response to the growing demand for durian, particularly in China, which is increasing steadily each year.

While Thailand has long been a leader in durian exports, the emergence of competitors in ASEAN and China, who are beginning to cultivate and export durians to the market, poses a challenge. To address this, Thailand should focus on maintaining the quality of exported durians and expanding its market share. The current government’s goal is to achieve one trillion baht in durian exports in the future. Continued …

He said that this year’s revenue growth can be attributed to an increase in the number of international tourists and the fact that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) organized events in both Khaosan Road and Sanam Luang. Continued …
