Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defense Conference concludes in Hua Hin

Adm. Samuel J. Paparo, commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and Gen. Songwit Noonpakdee, chief of defense forces for the Royal Thai Armed Forces, cohosted the 27th annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defense Conference, a three-day event held in Hua Hin from Aug. 26-28.

In addition to chiefs of defense and senior military leaders from 29 nations, the Royal Thai Armed Forces headquarters had the honor of welcoming Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Steven Nordhaus, Chief of the National Guard Bureau, who made a special visit to attend CHODs to underscore the National Guard’s commitment to its Indo-Pacific partners under the Defense Department National Guard State Partnership Program. The political future of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is facing its most challenging moment yet, following the release of the audio clip involving Cambodia’s Hun Sen, which has escalated tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border. The country is in an uproar, frustrated by what is perceived as her lack of experience. The prime minister’s fate rests solely on the Constitutional Court, which is expected to issue its ruling today.

Death Toll Rises to 6 in Chiang Mai Landslide, 3 Still Missing

Rescue teams have recovered more bodies from the devastating mudslide that struck Ban Pang Ung village in Mae Chaem district, bringing the confirmed death toll to six, with three people still missing.

The latest bodies, identified as a man and a woman, were retrieved after an intensive day of searching by rescue workers, soldiers, and local volunteers using heavy machinery and bare hands, to dig through meters of mud and debris. Thailand to slam the gate shut with Cambodia border fence

Thailand will construct its first permanent border fence with Cambodia this year. The project, confirmed by the Royal Thai Army (RTA), will begin near Aranyaprathet to address ongoing security concerns along the shared boundary.

The permanent 10-kilometer fence along the Thai-Cambodian border, planned to rise near boundary markers 50 and 51 in Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo province, comes after a joint agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. Customs Cuts 8 Billion Baht from US Imports

The deputy director-general of the Customs Department, Yutana Phoolpipat, announced a hefty reduction in import duties on over 10,000 items from the United States. This sweeping change, aligning with the US tax policy agreement, is set to roll out this year. The expected revenue loss for the Thai government is 8 billion baht in the 2026 fiscal year.

Thai factory output drops more than forecast

Overstaying Scottish tourist shot in road rage incident

A Scottish holidaymaker from Dundee is recovering in hospital after being shot during a road rage incident in Mae Hong Son. Thousands attend Hua Hin Food Festival

The Hua Hin Food Festival 2025 drew thousands of visitors over the weekend, marking the town’s largest culinary event to date and coinciding with the 88th anniversary of Hua Hin Municipality.

PKK debuts emergency warning system to warn of impeding storms

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said the detailed study for Motorway No. 8 (M8) has been completed and the proposal will soon be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

Hua Hin Food Fest 2025 returns to Hua Don Beach this weekend

The Hua Hin Food Fest 2025 is set to return from today through Sunday, bringing a variety of culinary offerings and entertainment to Hua Don Beach in Khao Takiab.

Chamber music series starts tomorrow

Hua Hin Events and Elder Blossom Hua Hin will present “Serenade Hua Hin 2025”, a seven-concert chamber music series running from tomorrow to Sept. 13. The series, hosted at the Elder Blossom Theatre, aims to bring high-quality classical music to Hua Hin.

New Thai tax plan could cost expats

Thailand is preparing to flip its tax system on its head, and expats could soon be caught in the crossfire. By 2027, the government plans to roll out a negative income tax, a major shift in how financial aid is delivered.

Bangkok Shaken by Earthquake

Yesterday morning, a strong 5.4-magnitude earthquake caused tremors in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, testing the nerves of office workers and residents. The quake was registered at 9:58 am, with its epicenter located 10 kilometers underground in the Andaman Sea, approximately 211 kilometers southwest of Mae Sot district in Tak province.

Bangkok moves to reclaim river spaces for public

Thai-EU FTA talks unlikely to conclude this year

The Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) admitted yesterday that talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union are unlikely to conclude this year, despite earlier expectations. DTN Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said obstacles remain, with many sensitive and complex issues still under negotiation.

Chotima explained that negotiations, which began in 2023, cover 20 groups of trade and services across 24 sections. So far, only seven sections have been agreed upon, leaving 17 sections unresolved, mostly concerning market access and investment. Continued …

Panel wants Land Bridge study redone

The House Committee on Land, Natural Resources and Environment is calling for a thorough review of the Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) for the controversial land bridge megaproject, saying the report contains incomplete and/or inaccurate information that could hurt the project’s prospects.

Two more lives lost off Phuket’s treacherous coastline

Two more lives were lost in Phuket’s deadly waters in just 24 hours, sparking urgent calls for more warnings and lifeguards. Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT

Young elephant dies in PKK after attack by larger elephant

A young female elephant from the Pa La-U area was found dead in the Huai Sat Yai reservoir after being fatally injured in an attack by a larger elephant, officials confirmed yesterday.

The carcass was discovered in the “Sao Ha” reservoir area in Ban Khon Nom Pattana, Huai Sat Yai, outside the boundaries of Kaeng Krachan National Park. New rules for SIM cards will require facial recognition

The government has announced stricter measures for SIM card registration to combat rising online fraud, following cases in which criminals have exploited SIM-swap scams to steal from victims.

The system will apply to all new mobile subscribers, both prepaid and post-paid, as well as existing users replacing SIM cards while keeping the same number. The technology verifies identity in real time through facial recognition, similar to banking applications. This prevents scammers from using photos, videos, or 3D masks to impersonate others, a loophole that previously enabled fraudulent SIM registration, he said. Continued …

Jay Fai Fined 2,000 Baht for Unclear Menu Pricing Dispute

The Ministry of Commerce has issued a 2,000 baht fine to Michelin-starred street food vendor Jay Fai following a pricing complaint by a Thai YouTuber.

The controversy began when Pitchaya “Peachii” Chaychana, a YouTuber residing in the UK, visited Jay Fai’s establishment in Bangkok and was astonished by the price of her crab omelette. Wild Elephants Kill Villager in Khon Kaen

A group of wild elephants entered agricultural land in Si Chomphu District, Khon Kaen Province, and fatally attacked a local villager during the night.

Airports of Thailand revises Suvarnabhumi Airport plan, targets 120 million passengers

Hyatt Hotels Corp. has announced that a Hyatt affiliate has entered into management agreements with Chai Talay Hotel Co. for The Barai Hua Hin. Heavy rain forecast for much of Thailand

The Thai Meteorological Department has forecast increased rainfall for today, with widespread showers and isolated heavy to very heavy rain in some areas, particularly in the east and along the western coast of the south.

“It’s good news about the return of the Butterworth service. Further good news would be investment in rolling stock. With the huge outlay on the new track/Hua Hin station, it would’ve been good if some more money had gone into those ancient screeching trains (one is just going by now and the noise is deafening!), and carriages which have seen better days.” – AB

Editor: Patience. The Thai government has limited resources, with all areas of the country clamoring for investment of one kind or another. PKK is just one small piece of the overall equation, and, frankly, other areas could use the money more than this area. And new rolling stock has been purchased, just not for the southern route – yet. (Of course, as the article below illustrates, there always seems to be money for tourism needs.)

Hua Hin 2026 budget seeks over 400 million baht, with water system focus

Hua Hin has requested more than 400 million baht in funding for the 2026 fiscal year, with a significant portion aimed at upgrading the city’s water supply infrastructure.

Fearful residents flee border district

Fearing another round of clashes could break out along the Thai-Cambodian border at any moment, residents of a Sisaket district packed up and left their homes despite no evacuation order being issued, according to a media report.

Two people died in a horrific crash on a deadly curve in Prachuap Khiri Khan yesterday. The notorious spot, long feared by locals, claimed more victims as two others and a 7-year-old were rushed to Thap Sakae Hospital. Fortunately, they are expected to survive.

Thai army: Cambodia insincere about peace, still planting mines

The Thai army will continue to detain 18 captured Cambodian soldiers as long as Phnom Penh continues to break the agreed-on bilateral ceasefire and to use landmines, Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree said yesterday. He said Cambodia’s actions showed its lack of sincerity about restoring peace.

A landmine exploded and cut off a paramilitary ranger’s leg during a border patrol near an ancient temple site in Surin province this morning.

Thailand clears 432 explosives on Thai-Cambodian border in 10 days

The Thailand Mine Action Center (TMAC) has successfully cleared over 400 explosive devices along the Thai-Cambodian border in 10 days, spanning four provinces. Residents are urged to report any suspicious items immediately to authorities.

Yesterday, TMAC and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams announced the successful recovery of 432 explosive items in Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani between Aug. 1-10. TMAC deployed 15 operations teams in collaboration with police EOD units, the Suranaree Task Force, and Region 3 Provincial Police to survey, verify, and eliminate explosives left from past Cambodian attacks. Labor shortage at longan plants, orchards, as over 300,000 Cambodians have left

With over 300,000 Cambodian migrant workers having returned to their homeland due to the five-day clashes along the border that ended on July 28, longan farmers, plus owners of plants processing this fruit, are facing a labor shortage, and while Myanmar workers have been brought in to work in their stead at these plants, it is very difficult to replace those who departed at the orchards.

While the total number of Cambodian workers heading back home via Baan Laem border checkpoint in Pong Namron district of Chanthaburi, across the border from Battambang in Cambodia, has decreased to 2,000 today, approximately 300,000 have already left Thailand. Continued …

DNP urged to speed up elephant tracking system

The Environment and Natural Resources Ministry has told the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) to expedite the development of a wild elephant tracking and alert system to ensure the safety of communities within the animals’ range.

According to Chalermchai Sri-on, the DNP has also been instructed to update its maps, so they could be integrated into a mobile application that provides weekly updates on herd movements. Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Huay Mongkol Temple Mother’s Day draping draws crowd

Crowds gathered at Wat Huay Mongkol Saturday evening to take part in the 12th annual draping ceremony of the giant Luang Pu Thuat statue, held to mark Mother’s Day and honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s 93rd birthday.

More than 1,000 Thai and foreign visitors joined the ceremony, carrying a saffron-yellow cloth measuring 3 meters wide and 247 meters long in a clockwise procession before draping it over the statue, which bears the royal cypher “Sor Kor.” Continued …

South-bound trains resume normal services after Saturday’s derailment

The State Railway of Thailand has resumed its normal south-bound train services after removing three derailed carriages and repairing damaged tracks in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Don’t say the baht is weak — it’s not

While headlines scream about a “weakened” Thai baht, the truth is more complicated — and frankly, misleading. The baht hasn’t significantly weakened in any meaningful long-term sense. If anything, it remains overvalued against several major currencies, especially considering the tourism slump Thailand continues to face.

In the past week, the baht touched its weakest point in over a month, closing at 32.85 baht per USD, compared to 32.38 a week prior. But this slight shift hardly signals a sustained weakening. In fact, KBank expects it to remain in a tight range of 32.30–33.10 next week, depending on U.S. inflation data, foreign capital flows, global gold prices, and — oddly enough — tensions with Cambodia. Coastal communities bear the brunt of Thailand’s LNG boom

Thailand is gradually moving away from coal and oil as part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. A major part of this transition is the expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours.
