“Serious actions against burning garbage could lead to a quick and effective improvement of air quality but it seems authorities are not much interested.” – RB

Expat News: If only it were that simple. First, most of the air pollution is caused by agricultural burning, not garbage burning. Second, much of the air pollution from burning is coming from neighboring countries and most is from agriculture. Third, unless somehow Thai farmers are provided with modern farming equipment, which they cannot afford and which will cause the price of their products to escalate, they will continue to do what they have done for centuries.

Bangkok plans 20-baht flat fee for electric rail

The Transport Ministry has announced plans to allocate an annual budget of 8 billion baht to support a 20-baht flat fee policy for all electric rail services in Bangkok.

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit stated that a dedicated team will be formed to expedite the policy’s implementation, aiming to cap the maximum fare for all electric rail services in Bangkok and its surrounding areas at 20 baht by September 2025. Continued …

Century-old parkia speciosa tree generates 40,000 baht annually

A century-old parkia speciosa tree in Trang province has captivated the market due to its large, long pods and superior taste, generating up to 40,000 baht annually from a single tree.

At Suan Ta Chan Tonmai Panpi in Trang’s Na Yong district, 53-year-old Satit Ramna hired locals to climb and harvest the pods from his four 100-year-old parkia speciosa trees. Despite a prolonged drought lasting over three months, each tree is expected to yield between 800 and 1,000 pods this year, slightly less than usual. Baht volatility against the dollar exceeds regional peers

The baht has been exhibiting a greater degree of volatility against the U.S. dollar than its regional peers, mainly due to market expectations of a U.S. policy rate cut and Thailand’s gold imports. Year-to-date, the baht’s rate of volatility stands at 7.3%, slightly below the Korean won at 7.4%.

Value of food delivery, ride-hailing sales hits $5 billion in H1

The combined gross merchandise value (GMV) of Thailand’s online food delivery and ride-hailing services in the first half of 2024 reached US$5 billion, according to India-based Redseer Strategy Consultants.

Thai software sector sees growth of 12.8%

The software sector outperformed three other digital sectors last year with strong growth of 12.8%, reaching a value of 215 billion baht. The software sector is projected to maintain a growth rate of 9%-10% between 2024 and 2026, according to a survey.

New expat tax regime may link visas and tax returns

The Revenue Department is preparing draft legislation to further its global tax initiative, including plans to tax all foreign residents on their worldwide income, irrespective of whether the money is remitted to Thailand. However, for most expats and those considering Thailand as a place to live, the discussion is only just beginning.

In the meantime, the key consideration is that for those who stay over 180 days in Thailand this year, a tax return is due by March 31, 2025. Certainly, at the very least, foreigners should have obtained and studied their country’s tax treaty with Thailand. Afterward, how the Revenue Department moves to impose its new powers remains to be seen. For instance, it may choose to link tax reporting with the issuance of long-term visas very shortly. Why is Thai healthcare so good?

Thai healthcare is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations.

Last year, a whopping 99.5% of the population of 72million was covered by health insurance. Remarkably, Thailand has achieved this as a developing country: its income per person was roughly $7,000 in 2023, more than 11 times smaller than America’s. Even in the middle of the pandemic in 2021, its public-health bill was 6% of GDP, compared with 17% in America and 11% in the European Union. Continued …

Low measles vaccination in 3 southern border provinces causes 5 deaths

The Disease Control Department plans to rush measle vaccines to young school kids in the three southern border provinces after the disease outbreak killed five people there last month, the department chief said.

Director-general Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn said on Saturday that measles and German measles were communicable diseases of concern in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces because of the low vaccination rate in the Muslim-dominated southern border provinces. Continued …

Bangkok hospital director promises ‘gas chambers’ for defiant smokers

The director of Mongkutwattana Hospital in Bangkok has vowed to lock defiant smokers on his premises in “gas chambers” until they inhale 100% of their cigarette smoke.

Fisherman survives four days at sea off Satun

A fisherman miraculously survived after floating in the sea off Satun in southern Thailand for four days. Despite exhausting his strength, he managed to stay alive by drinking from a floating bottle of sugarcane juice. His ordeal concluded when waves carried him to Bulon Mai Phai Island.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn insists on increasing the daily wage to 400 baht nationwide on Oct. 1 despite concerns that the rise will harm businesses.

Gold price falls as baht strengthens

The domestic gold price has dipped by 2,000 baht per baht weight in just over a month, as the Thai currency appreciated by more than 7% during the period, with the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) noting prices may continue to decline if the value of the baht appreciates.

Hat Yai has declared it wants to be a medical and wellness hub in the southern region. Sitthisak Tonmongkol, secretary-general of Hat Yai Economic Forum (HEF), said several development projects will be launched to develop the southern city.

Hotel Prices Rise as Phuket Sees 42% Increase in Foreign Tourists H1 2024

Carlos Martinez, director of research and advisory at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co., a Thai real estate advisory firm, commented on the overall tourism industry in Phuket for the first half of 2024, stating that the industry has recovered strongly with a total of 4.3 million tourists, which is only 7% below pre-COVID-19 levels.

The number of foreign tourists increased by over 42% year-on-year to 2.6 million, close to pre-COVID figures. The improvement in air transportation capacity is expected to support further growth in international tourist numbers in the second half of the year. Continued …

Thai police probe Russian mafia link to tourist’s death on Phuket

A Russian tourist found dead in Phuket a few days ago was possibly the victim of a mafia hit, police suggested. The body of 27-year-old Ilia Orlov showed signs of torture and was left in the open in a popular tourist area near Karon Beach.

Which EV markets and models have performed strongest so far in 2024?

In terms of new electric vehicle (EV) volumes, no market was able to pull ahead of China. In the first six months of 2024, the country recorded nearly 4.3 million plug-in deliveries. This meant that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) made up 43% of the market. BEVs alone made up 25% of sales in this period.

With 41,000 EV registrations, Thailand’s plug-in market recorded growth of 5% in the first half of 2024. This followed a surge in deliveries during the same point last year, when 89,000 units hit the roads, up 327% year on year. However, the market could soon see electrification accelerate again. Driver Trapped Underneath Overturned Road Roller in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Rescue teams responded to a distress call regarding an accident involving a steamroller at Village No. 6, Baan Bo Phai, in Sai Thong subdistrict, Bang Saphan Noi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The incident prompted a swift response from emergency services, including rescue teams equipped with cutting tools, as well as an ambulance and medical personnel from Bang Saphan Noi Hospital.

Upon arriving at the scene, rescue workers discovered an overturned road roller with its driver trapped underneath. The driver was pinned by the vehicle’s steel frame, which had fallen across his hip and right leg. Continued …

The increasingly frequent deaths involving high buildings and falls are leading to such stories barely registering as news in Thailand anymore. Indeed, in recent years, the reporting of such incidents increasingly leaves out key details. For instance, the identities of victims and the progress of police inquiries.

Thai man walks over 200km to hospital for daughter’s treatment

A Thai man walked over 200 kilometers to take his one-year-old daughter, who suffers from heart disease and a severe lung infection, to a hospital in Chiang Mai‘s city center. A rescue team came to his aid after observing him weeping by the roadside.

The rescuer from the Nopparat Rescue Foundation in Chiang Mai offered a free ride to the 24-year-old single father and his daughter on Friday, after witnessing the man sitting and crying because he could not afford a trip back home. Continued …

Eighth Fatality in Bangkok Methanol Poisoning

The methanol poisoning crisis in Bangkok has claimed its eighth victim, with five others still on ventilators. The situation continues to develop, with health officials and police working to trace the source and prevent more casualties. The latest death occurred at Kasemrad Ramkhamhaeng Hospital, with the patient already in critical condition upon arrival.

New PM under fire, lawsuits challenge her election

Paetongtarn Shinawatra could lose her position as prime minister and leader of the Pheu Thai party following new lawsuits linked to the impeachment of her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, last month. Phuket’s newest millionaire is none other than a chief mechanic, who struck gold in the government lottery’s latest draw.

Jirasak “Ton” Saewun, who works at Anuphas Ford in Phuket, scooped 30 million baht after hitting the jackpot with five first-prize tickets. Baht weakens as China falters

The baht led Asian currencies that weakened against the dollar on Monday on a faltering Chinese economy, with analysts suggesting the baht could be on a depreciating trend for the remaining months of this year if the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) cuts rates by less than the 1% reduction anticipated by the market this year.

The baht slipped 0.5% to below 34.20 baht to the dollar on Monday, compared to the 13-month high of 33.85 last Friday, as emerging Asian currencies also weakened against the greenback. Continued … 

Private investment falls sharply in Q2

Private investment contracted significantly in the second quarter, primarily due to a decline in investment in commercial vehicles as financial institutions tightened lending, according to the Finance Ministry.

Bill to get southern Thailand’s land bridge going

The southern land bridge megaproject will move forward, as the government is currently drafting the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) bill, which is required for the project to continue, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said on Monday.

The one-trillion-baht project, which will see a shipping shortcut and various supporting infrastructure built to connect Ranong and Chumphon in the south, will carve out an alternative route for cargo ships heading from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand and vice versa. IEAT sets new record in selling, leasing land in industrial estates

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) said it has hit a new record in selling or leasing land in fiscal 2024. A total of 6,174 rai (987.84 hectares) of land in IEAT-managed industrial estates has been sold or leased between October 2023 and July 2024.

The Royal Forest Department (RFD) on Saturday seized about 5 rai of land at the top of Nak Koet hill in Phuket believed to be linked to the Aug. 23 landslides that killed 13 people.

Flooding disrupts Thai agriculture, vegetable prices surge

Flooding in several provinces across Thailand has led to significant disruptions in the supply of agricultural products, prompting the Commerce Ministry to closely monitor price movements. According to Wattanasak Sur-iam, director-general of the Internal Trade Department, the floods have reduced supply, causing a noticeable increase in vegetable prices compared to last week.

Thailand to launch digital money handout in two weeks

The coalition government is set to initiate its policy implementation, including the digital money handout scheme, in two weeks, according to caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

Agency for Real Estate Affairs (AREA) points to the trend toward foreign ownership: a new post-COVID peak will be reached in 2024. It is estimated that 5,700 units will be transferred by the end of this year, surpassing the 1,000-5,000 units that weretransferred annually in 2020-2023.

More than 12 million foreign arrivals expected before end of year

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimates that 12.22 million foreign tourists will visit Thailand in the last four months of 2024, pushing the total for the year to nearly 36 million, surpassing the target of at least 35 million. Revenue from international markets is expected to reach 1.8 trillion baht.

TAT Gov. Thapanee Kiatphaibool says the foreign tourism market in the last four months of 2024 is showing signs of improvement compared to the same period last year. It is expected that 12,226,500 foreign tourists will visit, a 20% increase and generating 652.826 billion baht in revenue, 29% more than the same period in 2023. NESDC releases report on Thailand’s economic performance

Kingdom plunged into political turmoil as PM Srettha is removed from office

Thailand was plunged into crisis on Wednesday afternoon when the Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. In effect, the move also collapsed the current coalition government.

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday, in a majority 5-4 decision, declared an end to Srettha Thavisin’s tenure as prime minister. In effect, Thailand’s government has now also been struck down. The decision will likely spark a political and constitutional crisis. Continued …

Baht appreciates to below 35 per dollar

The baht appreciated to below 35 per U.S. dollar, driven by a weakening greenback as the market expects a Federal Reserve rate cut following the release of recent U.S. economic data. On Wednesday the baht opened at 35.03 per dollar, strengthening from Tuesday’s close of 35.16.

Pathum Thani police on Wednesday launched a hunt for a gang of four Chinese nationals following an armed robbery at a luxury house located on a golf course in Muang district of Pathum Thani province.

Ke Jibao, 34, a Chinese businessman, told officers of Pak Klong Rangsit police station that four armed men of Chinese nationality wearing ski masks barged into the house on Tuesday night. Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

The Thai currency was trading at 35.72 baht to the greenback around noon Wednesday, compared to Tuesday’s close of 35.99, said Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of the research, banking and financial sector at Kasikorn Research Center. Continued …

The Law Society of Thailand (LST) announced on Wednesday that it will file a class-action civil lawsuit against Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) for damages caused by the infestation of alien blackchin tilapia in water resources across 16 provinces.

The agricultural drones project aimed at improving productivity has secured participation from 86 communities across 22 provinces in the first batch, a statement released by Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency said on Wednesday.

First day of digital wallet registration is today

The “Thang Raj” application, which is to be used to register for the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet handout scheme, was set to be ready for users from 8am today, the first day of registration for those who have smartphones, the Finance Ministry announced.

Factory output falls more than forecast as car output slumps

Little by little, the canopy of branches and interlocking leaves closes overhead as our vehicle rollicks deeper into the plantation. Pakamart Tongkam points from the driver’s seat into the stark thicket of rubber trees that now surround us: “When I was a child, I slept out there in a small hut while my mum and dad worked in the plantation through the night.”

Several years later, as an adolescent, Pakamart helped her parents with their daily rubber tapping. The routine was grueling, she says during a visit to Nathawi district in southern Thailand’s Songkhla province, a heartland of rubber production.
