Hua Hin municipality outlines plans for future development

Hua Hin municipality commemorated its 86th anniversary with a merit-making ceremony on Monday. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul led the ceremony, which was overseen by Phra Kru Wichitthamvibhat, the chief of Hua Hin District and the abbot of Wat Busayabunpot.

Two fitness centers open in Hin Lek Fai

On Saturday, Hua Hin welcomed two new fitness centers – Elite Fight Club Hua Hin and CrossFit Hua Hin.

The two centers share a site in the Hin Lek Fai area, offering a mix of martial arts, boxing, yoga and a CrossFit-affiliated gym.

Also offered is an area for athlete recovery, ice baths, sauna, steam room, swimming pool, and massage facilities.

Charity dinner Saturday to benefit breast cancer group

The Pink Ribbon charity dinner will be held this Saturday at the Banyan Golf Club to raise money for the Queen Sirikit Center for Breast Cancer Foundation, during global Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The dinner features a raffle and auction with prizes from a large group of hotels, resorts, wellness and sports centers, and golf companies.

More details on Thai taxation of overseas income

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Prices cut for 150,000 items

The prices of more than 150,000 products and services will be cut by as much as 87%, effective immediately, until the end of December.

As a part of the government’s Quick Win policy to reduce expenses, increase income and expand business opportunities, 288 business operators yesterday agreed to reduce the prices of their goods and services covering 151,676 items across the country for three months until Dec. 31. Continued …

Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

Five other people were also injured, three of whom are being treated at Chulalongkorn Hospital, with two in a serious condition. The two others are being treated at the Police General and Bangkok Christian hospitals. Continued …

PM Puts Weapon Systems Procurement On Hold

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday suspended the procurement of any weapon systems during fiscal 2024, so that, he said, the government’s annual budget could be spent for optimum use.

The prime minister said he has instructed the Ministry of Defense to keep any otherwise-planned procurement of weapon systems and accessories on hold throughout fiscal 2024, beginning on Oct. 1, so an estimated 3.48 trillion baht budget worth of the taxpayer’s money will be used in optimum fashion. 13 Electric Poles Collapse During Installation, 12 Injuries, 2 Deaths

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A rescue squad was urgently dispatched to aid the injured and send them to nearby hospitals.

Helmet heist: Foreign couple’s brazen theft to dodge checkpoint fines

A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint.

The director of the Mae Ping Post Office, Kraisri Thongwirat, discovered that two helmets belonging to the post office had gone missing Monday. The two helmets had been left at his welfare house near the post office. They were red and white and had the Thailand Post logo on them. Continued …

Giant python crashes lunchtime in Yala

A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Weakening baht boosts Thailand’s exports and tourism

Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, pointed out yesterday that the weakening baht, despite its potential negative impact on energy import costs, is actually proving to be a boon for the country’s exports and tourism. The baht had earlier plummeted to an 11-month low against the U.S. dollar, trading at 37.095.

According to Srettha, who also holds the finance minister portfolio, this depreciation isn’t entirely detrimental. It has a favorable effect on the country’s exports and tourism sectors – key contributors to Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP). Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

The tourism confidence index in Thailand has taken a hit, with figures sliding from 91 in the same period of 2019 to 69 in the third quarter of this year, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).

The third quarter’s number also represents a decline from 74 and 72 recorded in the first and second quarters of 2021, respectively. Despite welcoming around 20 million foreign visitors from January to September, the tourism industry is yet to see a significant economic boost, largely due to global economic jitters and high household debt levels. UTCC cuts estimate of economic growth to 3%

Several economic factors are signaling a less-optimistic outlook for the Thai economy, leading to a revised growth forecast for 2023, Thanawat Polvichai, rector of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), said this week.

Thanawat, who also serves as chief adviser to the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, said that the UTCC has now revised Thailand’s economic growth rate for this year to 3% from the initial 3.6%. Labor minister vows to raise daily minimum wage by year-end

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced on Thursday that the raising of the minimum wage would be a New Year’s gift for the labor sector, but could not confirm whether the increase would bring it up to 400 baht per day.

Formal discussions with the tripartite committee, composed of employers, employees, and government representatives, would first be necessary, he said, adding that the decision would be based on inflation rates, minimum wages in each province, varying wages in different industries, and the country’s inflation rate. US dollar surge hits Asian currencies: Thai baht suffers

Asian currencies experienced a dip today, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah bearing the brunt of the losses. Baht expected to continue its slide

Economists are warning the baht will weaken further throughout this month and next because of higher volatility in money and capital markets worldwide after the U.S. Federal Reserve’s hawkish comments about its benchmark interest rate.

Poon Panitchpibun, money market strategist at Krungthai Global Markets, a research center of Krungthai Bank, said the baht opened on Thursday at 36.25 to the U.S. dollar, depreciating from the previous day’s close of 36.07. Continued …

Landscaping of beach road a priority?

Hua Hin municipal officials plan to improve the landscaping of the road leading to City Beach. At a meeting yesterday, the Sanitation and Environment Division was told to improve the landscape down to the beach front.

Given that the road is lined almost in its entirety with businesses and vendor stalls, where landscaping would be installed is a question, as is whether the cost of such landscaping is even necessary. The only break in the vendor lineup are the two Centara entrances.

Previously, “beautification” of the road involved new asphalt, as well as building vendor buildings to replace the makeshift stalls that were present. The result has been a narrowing of the pathway that accommodates motorcycles as well as pedestrians. The vendor improvements were made after a fire near the beach destroyed several stalls.

Officials did recommend also that the road be kept clean and that more trash bins would be installed.

Hua Hin seeks approval to hold long-tail boat racing event Nov 17-19

The Hua Hin municipality has submitted a formal request to provincial officials for the green light to host its annual long-tail boat racing event at Khao Tao reservoir in November.

The heart of the discussion revolved around the municipality’s request for the continuation of the longboat racing event. This event traditionally occurs every November to December at the Khao Tao reservoir, a project that was initiated by royal directive. Continued …

Intense plankton bloom threatens Chon Buri’s marine life and mussel farms

A severe plankton bloom, unusually dense in nature, has emerged off the eastern coast of Chon Buri province, leading to the formation of what marine scientists are referring to as an aquatic “dead zone.” This situation poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of local fishermen and the operations of mussel farms in the region.

(Editor note: Plankton blooms such as this one are generally caused by chemical runoffs from farm activities. With the Chao Phraya River emptying into the Gulf, and carrying runoff from Thailand’s farming heartland, such dead zones are likely to continue, and worsen.)

More than 6% of all Thais still live on less than 2,803 baht per month

Although poverty has decreased in Thailand, incomes have risen and income inequality has decreased, disparities persist and require attention, the National Economic and Social Development Council said in a report.

Baht depreciation expected to deepen amid global market volatility

Financial experts are predicting a further depreciation of the baht throughout this month and next, due to the increased volatility in the global money and capital markets. This follows the U.S. Federal Reserve’s recent suggestion of a potential increase in its benchmark interest rate.

Growing demand for commercial electric vehicles and batteries is expected to boost the total revenue of Energy Absolute (EA), a renewable energy and EV developer and operator, to reach a record high of more than 41 billion baht this year, up from 27.5 billion baht in 2022.

Thai PM says use of cannabis must be regulated within six months

Speaking in New York, Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said that his government will amend the law on cannabis, to restrict its use to medical purposes and to control retail cannabis outlets, within six months. (There are a reported more than 12,000 cannabis-related businesses in Thailand.)

During his interview with Bloomberg, the prime minister said that, since cannabis was decriminalized in Thailand last year, by removing it from the Category 5 drugs list, it has become the first country in Asia where cannabis is available for medical, as well as recreational purposes, resulting in the rapid growth of retail outlets offering cannabis and its extracts over the counter. Thai baht plummets against the US$

The Thai baht has plummeted to its lowest level against the USD since November last year, driven by concerns of “stagflation in countries that heavily rely on energy imports. That includes Thailand.

The baht experienced its second consecutive day of declines against the USD, falling by 0.6% and reaching its lowest point since Nov.10, 2022. As of yesterday afternoon, the baht is valued at 36.2 per U.S. dollar. Govt to finalize implementation of digital wallet scheme in 10 days

The details of the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme would be proposed for Cabinet approval within the next 10 days, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said yesterday.

The government is currently discussing with the Finance Ministry, the Budget Bureau, the National Economic and Social Development Council and various other state agencies. Thai authorities said Thursday they have seized more than a ton of pangolin scales worth over 50 million baht ($1.4 million) that are believed to have been headed out of the country through a land border.

Economy likely grew 3.1% in Q2 on higher tourist arrivals

Thailand’s economy likely grew 3.1% in the April-June quarter from a year ago, up from 2.7% in the previous quarter, driven by increased foreign tourist arrivals, according to the median forecast of 21 economists polled.

On a quarterly basis, gross domestic product (GDP) was forecast to have grown by a seasonally adjusted 1.2%, a slowdown from the 1.9% growth in the preceding quarter, according to a smaller sample of forecasts in the Aug. 14-17 poll conducted by Reuters. Continued …

Foreign investments bolster Thai economy with 58.9-billion-baht boost

From January through July of this year, Thailand saw 377 foreign business people invest 58.95 billion baht in the kingdom, an increase of 17% in the number of investors but a drop of 20% in the value of foreign direct investment (FDI), a senior official said.

Estimates suggest that the Japanese investors led the pack with a total outlay of 19.9 billion baht. Twenty-five tourists recently experienced a “Bird Walk @Hatwanakorn National Park” event at Hat Wanakorn National Park in Thap Sakae. Participants walked along a nature trail that is home to a variety of birds, including the black-winged stilt, hoopoe, yellow-bellied sunbird, common green pigeon, spotted owlet, blue-throated bee-eater, paradise flycatcher, Eurasian magpie, greater coucal, common barbet, swiftlet, and Chinese bittern. Covid-19 survivors have 24% higher risk of developing Type-2 diabetes

Research has revealed that people who test positive for Covid-19 are at an increased risk of developing Type-2 diabetes. The disclosure came from Dr. Thira Woratanarat of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine, who referred to a study recently unveiled on the MedRxiv.org portal.

On the last enrollment day, Aug. 15, that holders of the five-year Elite “easy access”, five-year visas had been instructed to submit an application for a 15 years upgrade to 20 years in total, they have received an email from Thailand Privilege Card Co. informing them the new rule has suddenly and abruptly been scrapped.

The Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. (AeroThai) projects that some 2,600 flights per day will land at Suvarnabhumi during this year’s high tourism season, which would result in a figure of over one million flights for this entire year.

According to Nopasit Chakpitak, president of AeroThai, the figures are expected to approach the levels seen before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019. Thai baht falls on political uncertainties, Asian FX declines

The Thai baht hit a one-week low on Thursday on lingering political uncertainties after the populist Pheu Thai party took the lead in efforts to form a government, while other emerging Asian currencies fell against a firm U.S. dollar. The baht weakened 0.6% and equities in Bangkok shed 0.5%, a day after the Bank of Thailand raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points.

Southeast Asia’s second largest economy has been in political limbo since the May 14 election, and the latest twist came as the Pheu Thai party abandoned support for the reformist Move Forward party that had won most seats but twice failed to get parliament’s approval for its prime ministerial candidate. Heavy rain forecast for 43 provinces

The southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, most of the country, as well as the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure system over the upper coast of Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin, will continue to bring heavy to very heavy rain to 43 provinces,mainly in the north, northeast and eastern regions.

EGAT against further power bill cut

Debt-ridden Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) cannot yield to any further requests for cheaper electricity bills in the next four-month cycle, as this would affect its future investment in the power infrastructure.

In a grisly discovery at a Koh Phangan rubbish dump yesterday, a body part was found in a blue plastic bag, with police suspecting it belonged to a foreign man who had been killed and his body cut up and disposed not more than 48 hours previously.

A pickup truck collided with a train in the early hours of this morning, killing eight Thai people and injuring three others near Klong Udon Chonlajon in Chachoengsao province near Bangkok.

Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station officers and a rescue team promptly rushed to the scene at approximately 3am today. They found a train, laden with containers, positioned on the railway tracks.
