Beachfront buildings demolition to start tomorrow

Demolition work is scheduled to begin tomorrow on a stretch of Hua Hin’s waterfront, between the fishing pier and Chao Mae Thap Thim Shrine. The planned demolition is the latest stage in a dispute dating back at least to 2002. It concerns homes, seafood restaurants, guesthouses and other buildings along a roughly 400-meter stretch of beachfront, with some structures extending over the sea.

According to the municipal demolition notice, the buildings stand on state-owned public land designated for common use. Its owner challenged orders prohibiting the building’s use and requiring its demolition, but the Supreme Administrative Court dismissed the claims. Those judgments are final. – HHT

This strategic move is designed to allow Mars to respond more flexibly to demand and streamline product lines across various global markets.

Millions of Americans travel worldwide every year for medical care. These aren’t just aesthetic procedures; they’re also essential healthcare and life-saving treatments. Many destinations are known for high-quality, relatively affordable healthcare systems, which motivates Americans struggling to pay for similar procedures in the U.S.

Thailand is one option destination where medical tourism is booming. Americans are traveling to Southeast Asia to get full-body checkups, dental treatments, and highly specialized cardiac or hip replacement surgeries. Multi-specialty hospitals in Bangkok cater to an international clientele, so language is not a barrier, and many are accredited internationally, minimizing risks for foreign patients. Continued …

Bangkok’s Khao San Road faces glum high season

The Middle East conflict is hindering the long-haul tourism market, specifically affecting backpackers who frequent Khao San Road. This disruption is causing lower-than-expected forward bookings for accommodations in the area, leading to fears of an unproductive high season for local operators.

In addition, the new cannabis control bill threatens Khao San Road businesses by introducing strict regulations that could force more than 50% of local operators out of business. The Khao San Road Business Assn. expects these measures to significantly impact the area, which typically sees a high occupancy rate during the third quarter.

Thai bill to require environmental impact assessment for data centers

A draft bill on the operation of digital infrastructure services would regulate data centers, cloud services and digital platforms. Operators would need a license from the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, while the rules for applying for, issuing, suspending and revoking licenses for each type of business would be set out in ministerial regulations.

For data centers, the proposals cover project locations, environmental and health impact assessments, electricity and water supplies, and data storage in Thailand. The draft leaves several key numerical thresholds unspecified, so secondary legislation will need to be examined before the costs for individual projects can be assessed. Continued …

Why are Pattaya Soi 6 and Soi 7 off-limits to US Navy personnel after dark?

Personnel from the USS Abraham Lincoln have reportedly been prohibited from entering Pattaya Soi 6 and Soi 7 after sunset as part of safety rules imposed during the aircraft carrier’s port call in Chonburi.

Pattaya Soi 6 is located in northern Pattaya, connecting Pattaya Beach Road with Pattaya Second Road. It is regarded as one of the city’s most distinctive entertainment districts. HIV and AIDS still lurk behind the neon signs of Thailand’s sex industry

Behind the neon signs of Thailand’s vast nightlife industry, HIV remains a deadly and deeply entrenched threat. Prostitutes and customers increasingly arrange paid sex through websites, applications and private messages. They then meet inside hotels, rented rooms or homes, bypassing medical checks once imposed through established sex venues.

UNAIDS estimates that 620,000 people nationwide now carry HIV, while almost 60,000 may remain undiagnosed. Thailand’s infection rate is twice the American level and four times that across the European Union. Meanwhile, 10,217 AIDS-related deaths were projected for 2025, alongside 8,862 new infections. Thailand’s friend-for-hire services grow in Bangkok

Friend-for-hire services are gaining ground in Thailand, with people paying companions to join trips, take photographs or take part in activities.

Providers say demand has risen in recent years as more people live alone, lifestyles change and social media raises the appeal of shareable experiences. Continued …

Thai FTA use hits 1.57 trillion baht

Thailand’s use of trade preferences under free trade agreements reached US$48.069 billion, or approximately 1.57 trillion baht, during the first six months of 2026, rising 7.3% from the same period last year. The Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) reported that preferential treatment was claimed on 80.8% of the value of eligible exports between January and June.

Bangkok’s 34 data centers raise concerns over resource use and safety

The siting of a data center in central Bangkok near Praram 9 Hospital, along with concerns among nearby communities about a data center in Hua Mak storing several hundred thousand liters of fuel, has prompted questions about how such facilities can be located in the capital.

Chaichanok Chidchob, minister of Digital Economy and Society, said in an interview that data centers in Bangkok were located in areas where they were not permitted. Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt, meanwhile, announced that he had ordered a halt to new data center permits in Bangkok and that urban-planning law and the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process would be reviewed. Thailand’s Bet on AI and Semiconductors Tests Asia’s Next Growth Cycle

Asia still accounts for roughly half of global GDP on a purchasing-power-parity basis, and multilateral forecasters expect that share to keep inching up even as headline growth rates cool. The World Trade Organization sees Asia-Pacific trade growth slipping to 3.8% in 2026 from 4.1%, and the Asian Development Bank’s most recent outlook points to a similar moderation across the region.

None of that changes the underlying story: Asia remains the world’s principal growth engine. What has changed is that the opportunity is no longer automatic. It has to be seized, through reform, positioning, and the willingness to move before the window narrows. Thailand and its ASEAN neighbors offer one of the clearer test cases for how that plays out on the ground. Continued …

Thailand sends a message to ‘bad’ foreigners

Thailand has introduced its first official deportation regulation, creating a clearer process for removing foreign nationals who break the law.

The rules also cover conduct deemed contrary to public order, good morals, or public welfare. With Thailand cracking down on transnational crime while pursuing “quality tourism,” the regulation has sparked questions about exactly how those powers will be used. Video …

Thailand Risks Losing Wellness Crown Without Rule Reform

Thailand’s ambition to become a global hub for wellness tourism and preventive healthcare is being held back not by a shortage of talent or infrastructure, but by regulation that has failed to keep pace with a rapidly evolving industry, according to senior executives and experts who spoke at the Bangkok Business Summit 2026 yesterday.

Speaking on a panel titled “The Future of the Human-Centric Economy: Leveraging Tourism, Wellness and Healthcare”, held under the summit’s theme “Reinvent Thailand, Resilient ASEAN”, four prominent voices from medicine, hospitality, neuroscience and landscape design converged on a single message: Thailand has the ingredients for a world-class wellness economy, but bureaucratic constraints are preventing it from realizing that potential. How US Cold War support accelerated Thailand’s rise in Southeast Asia

American money, military spending and technical assistance helped Thailand build roads, airports and modern institutions while neighboring states faced wars. The transformation brought rapid growth, but also strengthened military rule and widened social inequality.

The Friendship Highway between Saraburi and Nakhon Ratchasima looks like an ordinary part of Thailand’s transport network today. When the 147-kilometer road opened in 1958, however, it represented a profound shift in the country’s development. Continued …

New vehicle sales in Thailand increased by over 20% to 59,196 units in July, up from 49,102 units a year earlier, according to the latest data released by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The market was driven higher by continued strong demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), sales of which surged by 122% year-on-year to 20,990 units last month, while sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger cars declined by 35% to 7,553 units. Continued …

Thailand is caught in the tourism trap

For two decades, Thailand was regarded as a sure-fire success story in the Asian travel industry. In 2019, the last year before the pandemic, just under 40 million international visitors traveled to the country, generating revenue of around three trillion baht.

That level is now further out of reach than the official statements of recent years would have suggested. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has lowered its forecast for 2026 to between 30 and 34 million international arrivals, a decline of around 18% compared with the original target. Continued …

The maintenance program will run until April 7, 2027, affecting elevated access routes to and from the terminal, which connect with Motorway No. 7, the Bangkok-Chonburi route.

Three lanes in affected sections will be closed in phases during the work, leaving two lanes open through diversions. Airport authorities warned that this could lead to slower traffic, particularly at busy times. Continued …

Thai passport placed 99th worldwide

Thailand’s passport has been ranked 99th worldwide by Passport Reports, with a mobility score of 93. The assessment places Thailand fifth among the 11 ASEAN countries and 21st among 50 Asian countries assessed.

The score should not be read as visa-free access to 93 countries. It combines 40 fully visa-free destinations, 48 where a visa on arrival or another facilitated entry process is available, and five destinations requiring an electronic travel authorization (eTA). A conventional visa or other advance approval is still needed for 105 destinations, representing 53% of those covered in the report. Continued …

The restaurants Anthony Bourdain visited in Thailand (and what he ate there)

While devout foodies will say he never really leaves the conversation, A24’s recent release of “Tony” arguably catapults the late chef, author, and television host back into the mainstream. Having visited Thailand several times, we put together a kind of checklist of restaurants in Bangkok and Chiang Mai that Anthony Bourdain once visited. True fans will know: he would have hated this listicle.

For many people, Bourdain’s first book, Kitchen Confidential, completely changed perceptions around life in the kitchen and the restaurant industry as a whole. Shattering stereotypes many may have had around the prestigious world of fine dining (verbal abuse, drug abuse, and the secrets of your brunch-time Hollandaise), the brilliant chef-turned-author wrote with incredible relatability, and a refreshingly raw honesty. A Glimpse of Solar Energy in Thailand

Thailand is among the countries in Southeast Asia that are beginning the transition to solar energy. Yet, the journey was not sleek at first. With less than two megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, Thailand’s solar power business was at a halt in 2008.

However, the government was beginning to provide incentives for renewable energy providers, and the cost of technology was decreasing. Also, the country’s concerns over the past decade have changed from depleting domestic gas supplies to figuring out how rapidly it can increase its solar energy capacity. Solar is presently at the center of energy security, trade competitiveness, and rural development. Continued …

Grid modernization strengthens Thailand’s clean energy shift

Thailand’s move toward cleaner energy is putting greater pressure on the country’s electricity network to accommodate more renewable power while maintaining reliability, affordability and system stability.

As climate change intensifies, governments and businesses are accelerating efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Thailand has also stepped up its environmental ambitions, with a national target of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Continued …

Green Rules, Real Risk: Thailand’s Trade Survival Test

Since Aug. 12, any Thai exporter shipping packaged goods into the EU has technically fallen under the bloc’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) – whether they know it or not.

Combined with the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), now in its financial phase, the rules mark a structural shift in how Europe, Thailand’s fourth-largest export market, decides who gets shelf space. EXIM Thailand, the state export credit agency, has already warned that unprepared exporters risk losing orders outright. Continued …

In this exclusive interview, Arada Fuangtong, director-general of the DFT, explains: Why sustainability is no longer an “option” but a compulsory requirement for global trade, and more. Video …

The ongoing war against Thailand’s eco-defenders

Thailand is facing a double crisis: an overwhelming volume of illegally dumped hazardous waste and a deadly climate of intimidation against activists trying to stop it.

In Prachin Buri province, environmental campaigner Sumet Rienpongnam now lives with a bounty of 2 million baht on his head. Sumet, 54, began campaigning when the stench from a local dump site spread across his community, causing daily misery. Continued …

Glacier collapse may have triggered Nepal-Tibet floods

The collapse of the lower section of a Himalayan glacier may have unleashed the ice, rock and sediment that caused catastrophic flooding near Nepal’s border with Tibet, although experts have not established why the glacier failed. Satellite images indicated that part of the glacier broke away at an altitude of about 5,200 meters before plunging approximately 1,200 meters onto the valley floor. Continued …
