Thai cyber police bust Hua Hin online luxury accommodation scam

Thai Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) officers apprehended a prominent company for an online luxury accommodation auction scam. The scheme deceived numerous victims and resulted in damages totaling over 3 million baht.

CCIB officers interrogated 46-year-old Busnavee, owner of BluNavy Hua Hin, a company that purportedly offered cheap accommodation but failed to provide the promised services. This inquiry followed complaints from over 20 victims across the country. Continued …

600 million baht sought for Rama 2 road work

The Transport Ministry is asking the Cabinet for 600 million baht from the central emergency budget, so it can boost the liquidity of contractors working on Highway No 35 or Rama II Road.

Caretaker Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said on Tuesday that once these funds are granted, the construction can be accelerated. Rescuers just a meter from trapped tunnel victim

Rescuers digging through the rubble in the collapsed train tunnel were about one meter away from one of the three trapped workers, the provincial governor said on Wednesday morning. Chaiwat Chuenkosum said they were moving very carefully toward the three victims, whose vital signs were still being detected by scanners.

Soil and rocks continued to fall in the under-construction tunnel and the safety of both rescuers and victims was of concern. The rescue tunnel had to be shored up with reinforcing supports as they progressed. Continued …

Survival kits reach flood victims in the north

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has established centers at headquarters and northern offices such as EGAT Mae Moh in Lampang Province and the Northeastern Region Operation Office in Phitsanulok Province to prepare survival kits for the flood victims in the north.

Over 5,000 survival kits, each containing essential living supplies – jasmine rice, instant noodle, and ready-to-eat food – together with 4,000 packs of drinking water have been delivered to the flood victims in Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phrae, Sukhothai, Phayao, and Chiang Rai Provinces. Continued …

Measures are to be put in place urgently to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the recent floods, the Bank of Thailand said on Tuesday.

Scholar calls for booze law overhaul

An instructor at Thammasat University has joined a chorus of voices espousing measures to promote alcohol consumption, including extending the hours of retail sales.

New Rule Lets Convicts Serve Sentences Outside Thai Prisons

Thailand’s Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong justified a new regulation that allows convicts to be held outside traditional prison facilities. This measure, introduced by the Department of Corrections, is intended to help ease prison overcrowding in Thailand, where the inmate population of about 220,000 greatly surpasses the system’s capacity of 150,000 to 160,000.

The regulation, introduced under Sections 33 and 34 of the 2017 Corrections Act, allows for alternative detention, including hospitals for sick inmates. Tawee stressed that this is a practical measure for rehabilitation and career training, rather than a convenience for prisoners. Continued …

From Myanmar to Thailand: Displaced journalists tell their stories

Since the 2021 coup in Myanmar, the military junta has continued its campaign of repression against the country’s citizens. Among the many groups targeted for harassment are independent journalists covering resistance groups. Many fled to Thailand, often illegally. Some later managed to legalize their immigration status by claiming to be migrant workers. However, most journalists have been forced to keep their real occupations secret.

Over the course of the past three years, women and LGBTQ+ journalists have risked their lives in the field while dealing with sexual harassment and the burden of looking after family members while displaced. Digital wallet scheme may be delayed to next fiscal year

The 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme faces potential postponement until the next fiscal year starting Oct. 1 if not implemented by next month, according to the Budget Bureau. Bureau Director Chalermphol Pensoot stated that the details of the cash handout policy would need to be revisited once the new Cabinet is formed.

Thailand’s unemployment hits two-year high at 1.07%

Thailand’s unemployment rate reached a two-year high, with 1.07% of the work force out of a job, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) revealed. The rise marks the highest level of unemployment since the Covid-19 pandemic waned, showing a worrying trend in the nation’s job market.

Thailand’s July exports surge 15.2%, highest in 28 months

Thailand’s exports in July expanded by 15.2% year on year thanks to a drop in global inflation, which put more money in consumers’ pockets, the Commerce Ministry said on Tuesday.

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office, said exports in July alone were worth US$25.72 billion (938.28 billion baht), hitting the highest level since March 2022. Continued …

Car sales fall 20.5% in July amid debt, growth worries

Domestic car sales remained sluggish in July with a year-on-year drop of 20.5%, attributed to high levels of household debt and slow economic growth, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Bangkok Gems Fair Set to Boost Global Trade

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), alongside government and private sector organizers, have announced the upcoming 70th “Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair,” known as “Bangkok Gems.” The event will be held from Sept. 9-13 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) and is projected to generate at least 3.5 billion baht in revenue.

Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, director-general of the DITP, emphasized the importance of the gem and jewelry industry in driving Thailand’s economy. Despite the global economic challenges, the export of this product sector in 2023 grew by 9.6%, valued at over USD8.8 billion. Thai Nippon Secures Exclusive Worldwide Rights for “Playboy” Condoms

Thai Nippon Rubber Industries (TNR) has secured the exclusive rights to manufacture and sell “Playboy” condoms worldwide, except in Mexico, for 30 years. TNR will invest between 500 and 800 million baht ($14.7-23.5 million) in a new factory in Chonburi by 2025 and plans to increase production capacity to 3 billion units per year.

Tourism operators seek long-term flood plan

Regional tourism operators have called for a long-term plan to manage floods and storms to prevent possible damage to tourism and the economy, following the floods in northern provinces and a deadly landslide in Phuket.

In Thailand, Tropical Wine Is Ready for Its Close-Up

It’s a steamy May morning in Thailand’s lush Khao Yai National Park, just a two-hour drive northeast of Bangkok, and the tok-tok call of a gecko sounds as I stand on a balcony overlooking the GranMonte wine estate. Among its holdings are seven guest rooms and 40 acres of vineyards at the edge of a tropical jungle, all baking in the 80-degree heat.

The winery’s workers protect themselves from the sun, wearing wide-brimmed hats and long-sleeved layers as they prune the vines that tangle and twist around dozens of constructed frames. A group of high school students are making soft sleeping mats from old plastic bags and giving them out to homeless people, both recycling the waste and helping the poor.

With PM’s Dismissal, Thailand’s ‘Network Monarchy’ Strikes Back

With another controversial ruling, Thailand’s Constitutional Court has once again returned the country to a new era of political stasis and uncertainty. On Wednesday, the court voted 5-4 to dismiss Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office for a minor “ethical violation,” relating to the appointment to his cabinet of an official who had previously served a prison sentence for bribing a court official.

The Constitutional Court’s decision is just the latest in a long line of significant interventions in Thai politics, and came a week after another ruling that disbanded the Move Forward Party, the largest party in the Thai parliament, and banned 11 of its executives from politics for 10 years. 10 Northeast provinces at risk of severe drought in next 10 years

Ten provinces in Thailand’s northeastern region are likely to experience severe drought over the next decade, according to drought trends forecast by the Climate Change and Environmental Department on Wednesday. The forecast was based on two climate model scenarios: one assuming moderate greenhouse gas emissions and one with high emissions.

The moderate emissions scenario assumes greenhouse gas emissions in 2100 will be close to current levels, potentially raising the global average surface temperature by about 2.7 degrees Celsius between 2081 and 2100. The high emissions scenario assumes emissions will be double the current levels, potentially increasing the global average surface temperature by about 4.4°C. Continued …

Thai-Chinese high-speed railway 36% behind schedule

The first phase of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway running from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima province is currently 71.4% complete, but around 36.4% behind its scheduled opening in 2028, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reported on Thursday.

A woman experienced a terrifying ordeal when the lift she was using at her condo in Bangkok suddenly plummeted from the 32nd floor and stopped at the 15th floor, leaving her shaken.

Thailand halves number of teen mothers, sets more ambitious goal

Through extensive campaigns on sexual well-being at the community level over the past decade, Thailand has successfully brought down the number of teenage mothers (aged 15-19) by half, the Public Health Ministry has announced, as it embarks on a more ambitious goal.

Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said on Wednesday that births in women aged 15-19 years in 2023 was 21 cases per 1,000 female population in this age group, down from 53.4 cases per 1,000 female population recorded in 2012. Continued …

Thaksin Tells Pheu Thai to Abandon Digital Wallet Plan

Thai unemployment drops, except in Bangkok

Thailand’s overall unemployment rate dropped from May to June, except in Bangkok, according to a new survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

The total number of unemployed was estimated at 379,000 in June, down from about 482,000 people in May, said the NSO. The survey was conducted among the working-age population of 59.19 million people aged 15 and older. Continued …

Institute predicts 8.8% jump in food exports to Bt1.6 trillion

The value of Thailand’s food exports is expected to increase by 8.8% year-on-year to 1.6 trillion baht this year, driven by growing global demand and a decrease in the prices of raw materials, says the National Food Institute (NFI).

Haier, the Chinese consumer electronics and home appliance company, has invested 10 billion baht to set up its first air-conditioner manufacturing plant in Thailand to tap the rapid growth of the air-conditioner market in Thailand worth more than 1 billion baht.

Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

Thailand is set to experience heavy rainfall despite hot daytime temperatures, with 33 provinces expected to face severe weather conditions, including heavy rain. The Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts increased rain from today, Aug. 10 to 12, especially in four regions.

Thai housing market slumps

Transfer of residential property to buyers in the first quarter of 2024 fell 13% from the same period last year, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported on Thursday. A total 72,954 units were transferred from January to March, the lowest since 2018.

Thailand’s hot season approaches its conclusion as the rainy season is set to begin in mid-May, according to the country’s Meteorological Department. The hot season peaked on April 15, when the temperature reached a record high of 44.6°C in Tak.

Deputy Director-general Thanasit Iam-ananchai has stated that throughout the weekend daily heat indices or apparent temperatures are anticipated to surge to precarious levels in specific regions, such as Bang Na district in Bangkok, Sattahip district in Chon Buri, and Phuket. The hot weather, currently affecting many parts of Thailand, is being caused by persistent low pressure cell, according to Somkuan Tonjan, head of the Central Weather Forecast subdivision of the Thai Meteorological Department.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned that 59 provinces in the North, Northeast, Central and East will be hit by summer storms from Sunday to Wednesday.

The summer storms are possibly being caused by the influence of a moderate high-pressure system over the South China Sea, TMD said. This high-pressure system is bringing southerly and southeasterly winds to upper Thailand, which are fast gaining strength, it added. Continued …

Thailand’s Industrial Sentiment Index (TISI) was at its highest for a decade in March, boosted by a rebound in domestic demand, production increases and improved performance, with the exception of production costs, said government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri on Sunday.

The index rose to 97.8 points in March, up from 94.1 points and 96.8 points in January and February, respectively, and was the highest since January 2013, he said, adding that he expects the index to pass 100 to 106.3 in the next three months. Continued …

Q1 Foreign Investment Soars by 25%, $960 Million, Japan Top

Thosapone Dansuputra, director-general of the Business Development Department, in his capacity as the secretary of the Board of Investment of Foreign Business, revealed that in the first quarter of 2023 (January – March), a total of 174 foreign businesses were granted permission to invest in Thailand under the Foreign Business Act of 1999, with a total investment value of 33 billion baht (960 U.S. dollars).

Out of these, 56 businesses obtained investment licenses and 118 received a certificate of permission to operate their business. These businesses also created job opportunities for 1,932 Thai people. Continued …

Thailand’s event-management industry is expected to grow by 25%-30% to reach 16-17 billion baht this year, as both the government and private sectors are rolling out events, particularly related to election campaigns.

How Thailand Minister Pushed Through Asia’s First Cannabis Legalization

Until last summer, Thailand had some of the world’s harshest drug laws, with possession of cannabis then punishable by up to 15 years in prison. But on June 9, marijuana was decriminalized and a resurgent cannabis culture has seen dispensaries popping up across the Southeast Asian nation of 70 million.

The move was the brainchild of Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s deputy prime minister and Health minister, whose Bhumjaithai Party is today the junior partner in a military-backed ruling coalition. Anutin’s pitch was that legalizing cannabis could reduce prison overcrowding — more than 80% of inmates in Thai prisons were incarcerated on drug-related charges — while spurring a hemp industry to alleviate rural poverty. Raja Ferry temporarily suspends Pha Ngan–Samui route

Raja Ferry Port Co. has suspended all ferry services between Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Samui in Surat Thani province in southern Thailand from Sunday–Wednesday (April 23-25).

A tour boat with 42 tourists from Phuket became stuck on a sandbank in Phang Nga. The boat was traveling from Phuket with 42 foreign tourists. They were traveling to the Hat Nopparat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi and Ao Phang Nga National Park. Boat crews and foreign tourists tried to push the boat off the bank for half an hour but failed. National Park staffers finally pushed the boat from the sandbank. Chiang Mai beats Singapore as safest city in Southeast Asia

Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand was named Southeast Asia’s safest city and the 32nd safest among 416 cities across the world.

According to the Numbeo website, Chiang Mai won 75.5 points for safety in Southeast Asia, followed by Davao in the Philippines (72.4) and Singapore (70.8).

United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi was named the safest city in the world with 88.8 points, followed by Qatar capital Doha (85.5) and Taiwanese capital Taipei (84.9). Continued …

Thailand’s unemployment rate drops to 1.2% as of November

A new census conducted by the National Statistical Office shows that the number of unemployed persons in Thailand has dropped by 95,000, with 620,000 new people entering the workforce.

Traisulee Traisoranakul, deputy government spokesperson, said on Sunday that statistics show that 39.82 million Thais were gainfully employed as of November last year, up by 620,000 from October.

She said the census found that Thailand has 58.73 million nationals who are at least 15 years old, and 40.36 million are at employment age. Of them, 39.82 million are employed and 460,000 are not. She said 18.37 million are outside the workforce, including housewives, students, and seniors. Continued …

Regulator eyes tariff on factories to boost clean energy

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is working on a “green tariff” that will determine the price of power bills for factory owners that need to use clean energy to achieve carbon neutrality.

Carbon neutrality means striking a balance between carbon dioxide emissions and absorption.

Details for tariff rates, which depend on types of renewable energy, are expected in April after the ERC announces the investors selected to join its 5,200-megawatt renewable scheme, said Khomgrich Tantravanich, secretary-general of the commission. Continued …

China-Laos-Thailand rail link plans up for talks

Thailand and Laos are in talks about the potential of a China-Laos-Thailand railway link that could reduce cargo transport costs by 30%-50% in three to five years, said the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) on Saturday.

Athipu Chitranukroh, deputy director-general of the DRT, and Kitjaluck Srinuchsart, deputy director-general of the Customs Department, visited Laos recently to discuss the matter.

3-airport high-speed rail link completion seen by 2029

The Don Mueang–Suvarnabhumi–U-Tapao high-speed railway, officially known as the High-Speed Rail Linking Three Airports Project, is in progress and expected to be completed by 2029, government deputy spokesperson Tipanan Sirichana said on Sunday.

Tipanan said Prime Minister Prayut, as chair of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Committee, had expedited the construction of the project to ensure a modern, convenient, fast and seamless transport system linking the three airports.

The State Railaway of Thailand (SRT) and the EEC Committee have entered a contract with a private consortium to build the 220-kilometer railway at a cost of 224,544 million baht and operate the system for 50 years. Continued …

Mae Hong Son in dire condition – 135 fire hotspots so far

Northern Mae Hong Son province will likely see an increase in forest fires this year, with as many as 135 fire hotspots having been detected during Jan. 1-27.

The Forest Fire Control Center said it is Mae La Noi district where most of the hotspots were seen, totaling 36, but this is outstripped by 77 detected in the national forest reserve.

Where air quality is concerned, the Zone One Environment and Pollution Control Office said today’s PM2.5 pollution level in Mueang Mae Hong Son reached 39 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³) with 50 µg/m3 or higher considered poor air quality. Continued …

Russians dominate Phuket tourism revival

Phuket is experiencing a resurgence in tourism, with the number of visitors to the island reaching nearly 50% of pre-pandemic levels, according to the director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Office in Phuket, Nantasiri Ronsiri.

According to the local TAT office, from January to December 2022, Phuket saw 9.26 million visitors, with 53.6% being domestic tourists and 46.4% being international tourists.

Ronsiri noted that foreign tourists contributed 70% of the entire revenue, while Thai tourists accounted for around 20%. The top 10 countries in terms of the number of arrivals to Phuket over the last year were Russia, India, Australia, England, Singapore, Germany, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Korea and the U.S. Continued …

Fire destroyed 14 of the 16 house rafts at a resort on the Khwae Noi river in Sai Yok district on Sunday afternoon, causing about 10 million baht damage. There were no casualties.

The deputy spokesman for the Royal Thai Police spoke yesterday after a meeting concerning allegations made by Taiwanese actress An Yu Qing or Charlene An that she and three male friends were extorted of 27,000 baht in Bangkok on Jan. 4.

Huay Khwang in downtown Bangkok has been mentioned as the location of the alleged extortion incident in previous reports.

Security camera footage from several locations in Bangkok shows the Taiwanese actress who claims Thai police extorted 27,000 baht from her after placing a vaping device in her hand using one before and after she was stopped at a checkpoint in the early hours of Jan. 5.

The actress, Charlene An, alleged on Taiwanese social media that she was forced to pay 27,000 baht to Thai police officers after they stopped a taxi she and her friends were traveling in at a checkpoint near the Chinese embassy at about 1 am on Jan. 5.

Over 80% of Thais have ‘hybrid immunity’ against Covid-19

More than 80% of the Thai population has developed “hybrid immunity” to the Covid-19 virus from a combination of vaccination and infection, Professor Yong Poovorawan said on Saturday.

More than 70% of the Thai population, or over 50 million people, were infected with Covid-19, while at least 80% of the population has been fully vaccinated (with at least two doses), the virologist wrote in a Facebook post.
