Ancient child skeleton unearthed in PKK rewriting prehistory

A remarkable archaeological discovery in a remote cave within Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park has yielded the oldest human skeleton found in Thailand to date, potentially pushing back the timeline of human occupation in the region by tens of thousands of years.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has warned the public about a spike in influenza after 130,000 infected patients were reported over the past two months.

DDC Director-general Dr. Panumas Yanwetsakul said that 131,826 influenza cases were reported from Jan. 1 to Feb. 24, with a dozen being fatal. Most patients were children aged five to nine, followed by babies and toddlers aged 0-4 and 10-14 years old. Continued …

17 killed, 40 injured as tour bus overturns in Prachin Buri

Over 40 people were injured, and 17 lost their lives after an educational field trip bus overturned while descending Khao San Pu Tone mountain in Prachin Buri’s Na Di district this morning.

Thai nominee crackdown uncovers tourism, property chaos

Authorities have announced progress in a crackdown on foreigners using Thai nominees to illegally run businesses, focusing on tourism and real estate. Between September 2024 and January 2025, a multi-agency taskforce led by the Commerce Ministry prosecuted 820 illegal nominee businesses, with estimated damages totaling 12.5 billion baht, officials revealed on Monday.

Council of State Rejects Plan to Lower Electricity Bills

The Council of State, Thailand’s primary legal advisory body, has dismissed a proposal from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) aimed at renegotiating contracts with renewable power firms to reduce electricity bills. Cabinet Set to Reject Casino Entry Rule for Thai Nationals

Thai Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has indicated that a contentious proposal regulating casino entry for Thai citizens is unlikely to win cabinet approval. Thailand’s biometric system overloaded with 50 million records

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has hit a critical roadblock, with its biometric system reaching its maximum capacity of 50 million records, preventing new foreign arrivals from being automatically recorded. The bureau is now forced to manually document arrivals and rely on an online database for security checks until a new system is developed.

Police Col. Neti Khanboon, commander of the database division at the bureau’s IT center, revealed the issue while testifying before the House Committee on National Security, Border Affairs, and National Strategies and Reforms. Continued …

Amid Climate Uncertainty, Floating Solar Builds Resilience

Southeast Asia is responsible for nearly a quarter of global energy demand growth through 2035, but it is currently heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels and hydropower. Given recent volatility in both fossil fuel prices and increasing severity and regularity of heatwaves and droughts, which make hydropower less reliable, diversification into domestically located renewable energy sources like solar will have energy security benefits.

This is particularly true for countries like Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, which have significant existing hydropower in their power supply and also significant untapped solar potential. Floating solar (FPV) is a low-cost way to quickly diversify the power mix in ways that complement existing hydropower, support water conservation efforts at existing dams, and reduce the need for expensive new dams, which have negative social and environmental impacts. New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

  • The bus will leave Hua Hin at 7 am and 2 pm
  • It will depart from Don Mueang at 7:30 am and 4 pm

Coup prevention bill draws opposition

The Bhumjaithai Party has opposed a bill proposed by the ruling Pheu Thai Party to amend the Defense Ministry Administration Act, which is seen as a bid to curb the military’s ability to stage a coup d’etat.

All southern trains will resume normal operations on Thursday, after fatal flooding in the region damaged the tracks, forcing them to terminate at Hat Yai station.

5 Workers Found Dead at Fermented Fish Factory Pit

In an incident in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun province, five workers were found dead in a waste pit at a fermented fish factory in Nong Khwai subdistrict. The incident occurred yesterday.

Another foreigner falls to his death from Pattaya condo

Early this morning, police authorities in Pattaya were alerted to an incident involving the fatal fall of a foreign national from a condominium on Pattaya Second Road, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province.

Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered the lifeless body of the victim, later identified as Tero Sakari Karppinen, a 52- year-old Finnish national. The body was found near the building, severely disfigured with broken bones and serious head trauma. Continued …

Auto sales rut in Thailand to drag on for years

Sluggish car sales are expected to plague the Thai automotive industry for at least another 1-2 years, with total domestic sales projected to plunge to 560,000 units in 2024, according to Hyundai Mobility Thailand, a subsidiary of South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group. Sales tallied 775,780 units in 2023.

Thailand trails Asia in rice yield race – by a lot

Thailand’s rice yields are significantly lower than other major Asian rice producers, according to Anon Nonsee, deputy director general of the Department of Rice. The average rice yield in Thailand is about 400 to 500 kilograms per rai (0.16 hectares), far below Vietnam’s 1,000 kilograms per rai and China’s 1,000 to 1,200 kilograms per rai.

While some Thai rice varieties can achieve yields similar to these countries, jasmine rice, renowned for its fragrance and soft texture, brings the average down due to its lower yield of 350 to 400 kilograms per rai. Jasmine rice’s unique qualities are tied to the dry conditions in the northeast and parts of the north, which enhance its aroma but reduce output. Continued …

Thailand MICE sector grows 42% to 1.16 million tourists in 2024

Thailand’s meetings, awards, conferences, seminars and exhibitions sector (MICE) has seen a 42% increase in international tourist arrivals in fiscal year 2024 (October 2023 – September 2024), with a total of 1.16 million attendees. This growth brings the sector close to its pre-pandemic peak of 1.2 million MICE tourists in 2019, according to the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

Looking ahead to 2025, Thailand is set to continue its growth, with several major international events expected to attract between 5,000 and 10,000 attendees each. The top five markets driving this growth were China, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, the United States and Japan. Hotel booze rules relaxed over New Year’s

Hotel guests will be allowed to order alcoholic drinks to their rooms from in-house bars and restaurants around the clock over the New Year, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The new rule was approved by the board, chaired by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, when it met on Monday.

Normally, guests can only order alcohol to their rooms during the regular hours: until 10pm from an in-house restaurant, or until 2am from an in-house bar. Continued …

The Labor Ministry will study Sweden’s pension system in a bid to improve the Social Security Office’s (SSO) scheme and better address the needs of social security subscribers in an aged society, according to Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

The Commerce Ministry has announced an increase in Thai rice prices for 2024, with both export prices and paddy prices on the rise. Thailand faces severe weather conditions today, as the Meteorological Department (TMD) issues warnings of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flash floods across 51 provinces. The northern and northeastern regions are expected to be particularly affected, with rain predicted to cover 70% of these areas.

PEA leads network partners to restore electricity system for flood victims

From the situation of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides from Typhoon Yangi and Typhoon Soulik, more than 100,000 people in the northern and northeastern regions have been affected, causing widespread damage, such as: electrical systems in homes or even Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution systems.

On the last day of June 2022, I went to bed knowing that thousands of people were serving decades-long prison sentences for growing or distributing marijuana in Thailand. Indian move puts more pressure on Thai rice prices

India is preparing to resume exports of non-basmati white rice, as inventories in the world’s biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop. New Delhi set a floor price for non-basmati exports at $490 per ton, a government order said.

Thai Airways International will no longer keep its loss-ridden Thai Smile Airways budget airline, but will terminate it now that it has transferred a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 planes to THAI, the parent airline’s chief executive officer said.

THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri said that after the fleet was transferred to be under operation by THAI, they generated more income than when they were under operation of Thai Smile. Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rain in three regions, with the northern region expected to face 70% rainfall. Bangkok will experience heavy showers from afternoon to evening.

Top cop Gen.Surachate Hakparn on Wednesday confirmed disciplinary action and a criminal investigation against two senior police officers in Pattaya in response to the shocking Deutsche Welle TV documentary on the country’s sex industry aired days ago. He also named the 55-year-old German suspect charged with the sexual assault of a minor under 18 years of age, 55-year-old Jens Kirch, as the man at the center of the story who skipped bail after his arrest in September 2022.

The deputy national police chief, who was appointed by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to get to the bottom of the affair, pointed out that while Thailand does not have an extradition treaty with Germany, he plans, in due course, to speak with the German ambassador to Thailand to pursue the matter further. Thai rice varieties will no longer enter world’s best rice competition

Thailand did not participate in the World’s Best Rice 2023 competition, held during the International World Rice Commission in Cebu, the Philippines, and will not do so in the coming years, Chukiat Opaswongse, honorary president of Thai Rice Exporters Assn. (TREA), said yesterday.

His announcement came one day after Vietnam’s rice variety, ST25, was voted the best rice variety of the 30 varieties submitted for competition. Thailand’s tourism revenue falls short of annual target

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has projected a shortfall in its annual tourism revenue target, with this year’s earnings expected to reach 2.07 trillion baht (US$ 58,773,427,200) instead of the projected 2.38 trillion baht (US$ 67,575,244,800).

Electricity tariffs: Potential 6 baht/unit increase expected next year

The board of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) voted on Friday evening to approve the takeover of the broadband internet service provider Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by Advanced Info Service (AIS).

Air Pollution Soars Across Most Of Bangkok

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday satellite data appearing on its “Dust Check” application showed that dangerous particles in the air known as PM 2.5 had soared in 48 of 50 Bangkok districts and exceeded the red code, which is 90 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in 34 of them.

According to Thailand’s color-coded air-pollution-warning system, green means moderate or no risk at all; yellow means the air is unhealthy for those suffering from respiratory illnesses, with children and the elderly urged to limit time spent outdoors; orange means it’s unhealthy for all; and red means hazardous. Grab Holdings Ltd. posted its first-ever profit on adjusted basis, a milestone for the decade-old Southeast Asian ride-hailing and food delivery company trying to convince investors of its earnings potential.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced his government’s intention to promote Thailand as a global festival destination, in the hopes of boosting tourism across the country and attracting more foreign tourists over the New Year period.

Srettha announced that Thailand will host two major events, namely the “Thailand Winter Festival”, which consists of 3,000 festivals and local events across the country, and the “Colorful Bangkok Winter Festival 2023”, which includes 200 festivals and events in the capital. Van Overturns In Chiang Mai, Killing 2 Foreigners, Injuring 10

Yesterday, a tourist van traveling from Chiang Mai to Pai overturned on the Chiang Mai-Pai route, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they found two foreign tourists dead outside the vehicle.
