What We Can Learn from Scam ‘Crackdown’ in Cambodia?

By now, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the obvious; it takes Cambodians with honesty to admit that the cruel and illegal scam operations in Cambodia are on an industrial scale, have gone out of control, and have gone too far.

n the end, it took the death by torture of a 22-year-old South Korean male student to wake up the South Korean public to demand an end to these transnational crimes that involve not only scamming but torture, human trafficking, organ harvesting, and killings. And the Korean government finally acted earlier this week, sending its vice foreign minister to Phnom Penh, who met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Continued …

Pattaya held a public hearing on Friday to review zoning adjustments for entertainment venues in Pattaya, with the goal of updating outdated regulations and aligning them with the city’s current tourism landscape.

Thailand’s Export Growth Slumps Amid Impact of US Tariffs

Thailand’s export growth has significantly decelerated, hampered by the ongoing impact of U.S. tariffs and sluggish global demand. The country’s Ministry of Commerce reported that exports rose just 3.1% year-on-year in August, a stark contrast to a 10.5% increase recorded earlier in the year.

The slowdown reflects broader trends affecting Southeast Asia’s economic landscape. Analysts attribute the decline to heightened tariffs on key Thai products, including electronics and agricultural goods, imposed during ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China. The Thai economy heavily depends on exports, which constitute about 60% of its GDP. Continued …

Phuket’s second-hand property market soars, outpacing new builds

In recent years, Phuket has not only been a prime tourist destination but also a battleground for high-end property developers, particularly those focusing on luxury villa projects scattered across the island’s prime locations.

Villas in Phuket were once sold even before construction began, with prices continually rising. However, in 2025, the landscape took a noticeable shift. Continued …

I went on a 4,000 km motorbike trip across Thailand in 19 days — and here’s what I learned

Instead of only seeing the top-10 attractions, a motorbike trip allows you to stop anywhere — by a rice field, a border river with Myanmar — and often discover places that aren’t on the map. You meet people, experience Thai culture, and realize that sticking only to tourist destinations gives you a distorted picture of a country.

Can Thailand survive Trade War 2.0?

Thai exports of goods, which account for almost 60% of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP), will be negatively affected in the current trade war as tariffs are hiked by the Trump administration, with retaliation from China. This will result in lower global trade growth affecting Thai exports not only to the U.S. but also to other major export markets — China, the EU, Japan, and ASEAN. Continued …

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has elevated Thailand’s aviation safety rating to Category 1. Announced by the Ministry of Transport yesterday, this milestone acknowledges Thailand’s adherence to international civil aviation safety standards, enabling Thai airlines to resume flights to the United States.

This turnaround follows extensive regulatory enhancements after Thailand’s downgrade to Category 2 in 2015. On the quake’s day and the following weekend, Pattaya saw unexpected full occupancy, as many opted for a last-minute escape from the capital.

In contrast, hotels in the typically bustling resorts of Hua Hin and Cha Am struggled, maintaining only 60% occupancy. Thai Baht Plummets with US Tariff Blow

The Thai baht is expected to plunge to 34.50 per U.S. dollar following the U.S.’s unexpected announcement of a hefty 37% reciprocal tariff on Thai imports. Yesterday, the baht staggered to its weakest in two and a half months, recording a value of 34.38 per dollar in trading, primarily due to these severe trade measures.

Kanjana Chockpisansin from Kasikorn Research Center, shared that the latest tariff decisions might drive the baht further downward. The surprising 37% tariff, significantly above the anticipated 10%-25% range, is likely to erode investor trust and stir a “risk-off” sentiment among investors. Continued …

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra acknowledged yesterday that substandard steel may have been used in the construction of the State Audit Office (SAO) building that collapsed during the earthquake last Friday. “Progress updates have been continuously reported, and the issue of (sub-standard) steel is one of the clearer aspects,” she said.

US Tariffs Threaten Thai Economy with Bt360-billion Blow

Devastating tariff hikes from the United States could hit Thailand with a 360-billion-baht loss, shaving 2% off the nation’s GDP, as warned by experts at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC). The clampdown, set for April 9, sees reciprocal tariffs soaring to 37% on Thai goods, thanks to U.S. President Trump’s latest executive order.

These sweeping tariffs, primarily targeted at steel, aluminium, and automotive sectors, could severely dent export values, potentially slashing it from $4.73 billion to $4.08 billion, equivalent to a 22-billion-baht loss. Experts fear an influx of Chinese goods into Thailand as China redirects its exports. Continued …

Thai manufacturers fret after tariff hike

Thai manufacturers plan to attend an urgent meeting held by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) today to discuss efforts to cope with U.S. reciprocal tariffs of 37% on Thai exports, with a proposal expected for increased purchases of American products to ease the trade imbalance.

The White House announced the new tariff policy, saying the U.S. faces “a persistent trade deficit driven by the absence of reciprocity in our trade relationships”. Thailand is bearing the brunt of stiff tariffs, scheduled to go into effect on April 9. Continued …

Analysts estimate widespread tariff damage

Stock market analysts anticipate the U.S. reciprocal tariff, which was higher than market estimates, could reduce Thai GDP by up to 1.2 percentage points, though a severe impact may prompt the Bank of Thailand to cut interest rates to revitalize the economy.

Krungsri Securities (KSS) said the U.S. announced broader reciprocal tariffs than expected, with President Donald Trump setting a 10% base import tariff on 190 countries effective April 5 (universal tariffs), with additional higher tariffs for certain countries, including China, India, the EU, and Thailand. China vows retaliation as Trump unleashes ‘bazooka’ US tariffs

China vowed to retaliate against Donald Trump’s biggest tariffs yet, putting the world’s largest economies on a collision course that risks decimating bilateral trade and upending supply chains.

Trump’s ‘tariffquake’ marks the end of US leadership globally

The sweeping tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump have been termed the end of globalization and free trade. In fact, it marks the end of U.S. leadership worldwide. If trust is the most important criteria of leadership, the U.S. has clearly lost the trust of the vast majority of countries and the global public.

The tariffs cannot be isolated from all the other extreme actions by the Trump regime: the pullout from a number of UN agencies, the attempted grab of Greenland and the Panama Canal, the confrontation with Europe over Ukraine, the support for the barbaric Israeli genocide in Gaza, the shutting down of USAID and Voice of America, the crackdown on free speech on U.S. university campuses, the questionable quality of key Cabinet members, and much more. Anchalee Poomsirkaew, director of the Asia-Pacific International Spirits and Wines Assn., said that relaxing four specific alcohol sale restrictions could maximize revenue impacts, potentially unlocking the full 100 billion baht. This regulatory change presents new opportunities for businesses, industry and the solar sector, while supporting the nation’s sustainability goals.

By removing this requirement, the Ministry of Industry has effectively lowered the barriers for businesses to adopt large-scale rooftop solar systems. Continued …

Amid Climate Uncertainty, Floating Solar Builds Resilience

Southeast Asia is responsible for nearly a quarter of global energy demand growth through 2035, but it is currently heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels and hydropower. Given recent volatility in both fossil fuel prices and increasing severity and regularity of heatwaves and droughts, which make hydropower less reliable, diversification into domestically located renewable energy sources like solar will have energy security benefits.

This is particularly true for countries like Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, which have significant existing hydropower in their power supply and also significant untapped solar potential. Floating solar (FPV) is a low-cost way to quickly diversify the power mix in ways that complement existing hydropower, support water conservation efforts at existing dams, and reduce the need for expensive new dams, which have negative social and environmental impacts. Hua Hin International School teacher shares his thoughts on education

Sixty-five years ago, in a University of Cambridge lecture called “Two Cultures”, the writer and scientist C. P. Snow bemoaned the fact that students saw themselves either as scientists or as following a humanities path. He despaired that “There seems…to be no place where the cultures meet.”

When I was at school studying A levels, it was taken for granted that the boys would choose mathematics and science subjects while the girls would go down the arts and humanities route. Roll forward a few (well, a lot of) years, and this is still a hard nut to crack: I work in an IB school where very few girls choose higher-level physics and only rarely do boys choose higher-level art and design. Thailand’s rice yields are significantly lower than other major Asian rice producers, according to Anon Nonsee, deputy director general of the Department of Rice. While some Thai rice varieties can achieve yields similar to these countries, jasmine rice, renowned for its fragrance and soft texture, brings the average down due to its lower yield of 350 to 400 kilograms per rai. Jasmine rice’s unique qualities are tied to the dry conditions in the northeast and parts of the north, which enhance its aroma but reduce output. Continued …

There is a government agency, the Thailand Film Office, whose task it is to market Thailand to foreign production companies. There are a number of government incentives designed to make shooting in Thailand attractive, such as rebates for productions that meet minimum expenditures and hire locals. Continued …

How Thailand’s New Cannabis Laws Are Reshaping the Expat Experience

On the last day of June 2022, I went to bed knowing that thousands of people were serving decades-long prison sentences for growing or distributing marijuana in Thailand. On the first day of July 2022, I woke up to the news that nearly all those people were released from prison and given their weed back if it hadn’t been destroyed.

The government of Thailand removed cannabis from the Category Five narcotics list, and anyone with a license could freely set up a cannabis business in Thailand. The Thai government handed out one million marijuana plants to Thai citizens, encouraging them to start growing cannabis for profit. Six weeks later, there was a ganja shop 100 meters from my house offering everything from space cake to big bags of high-grade cannabis. Continued …

Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. In 2022, his research team reported that an estimated 25.3 million metric tons of plastic waste has entered our oceans, and nearly two-thirds of that cannot be monitored. Continued …
