Thai government launches wildfire, haze, and PM2.5 pollution action plans

Hotel booze rules relaxed over New Year’s

Hotel guests will be allowed to order alcoholic drinks to their rooms from in-house bars and restaurants around the clock over the New Year, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The new rule was approved by the board, chaired by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, when it met on Monday.

Normally, guests can only order alcohol to their rooms during the regular hours: until 10pm from an in-house restaurant, or until 2am from an in-house bar. Continued …

Thailand may use Swedish pension scheme as new model

The Labor Ministry will study Sweden’s pension system in a bid to improve the Social Security Office’s (SSO) scheme and better address the needs of social security subscribers in an aged society, according to Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Phiphat, who is leading a Thai delegation of labor officials to Stockholm, paid a visit to the Swedish Pension Agency (SPA) to gather information and exchange ideas aimed at improving the SSO’s pension program. Continued …

Thailand enlists US influencers to boost authentic Thai restaurants

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has sought help from 50 American influencers to promote Thai restaurants in the U.S. that have won certificates of authenticity from his ministry. Pichai presided over a ceremony in Hollywood, California, to award Sa Wad Dee Thai Select certificates to seven U.S.-based Thai restaurants.

The Commerce Ministry invited 50 U.S. influencers with a combined 10 million online followers to join the ceremony, which was broadcast live on their Facebook and other social media. Continued …

Thais over 60 to receive Bt10,000 by Chinese New Year

Thais who are over 60 will be the next group to receive the 10,000-baht cash benefit under the “digital wallet”, payable before the Chinese New Year.

The policy committee on economic stimulation projects, chaired by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, agreed at its meeting yesterday to go ahead with the second phase of the digital wallet scheme by giving the 10,000 baht cash to about 4 million people in the 60-plus age group. Thai rice prices surge in 2024 as demand outstrips supply

The Commerce Ministry has announced an increase in Thai rice prices for 2024, with both export prices and paddy prices on the rise. Jasmine rice has seen a significant price increase, with premium varieties fetching 16,000 baht per ton. Projections suggest exports could hit 9 million tons this year.

Chiang Mai krathong waste drops 25%

Twenty-five tons of krathong floats and garbage have been collected from the Ping River after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down from 33 tons last year.

Chiang Mai Deputy Gov. Tosapol Phuanudom on Tuesday presided over the launch of a campaign to collect krathong floats, garbage and debris from the river at the Pa Dad sluice gate in Muang district. Chiang Mai braces for more flooding

More flooding is expected in beleaguered Chiang Mai later today, with water levels along the Ping River expected to reach 4.95 meters starting in the morning. Recent heavy downpours in upstream areas have caused the Ping River to rise rapidly, Gov. Nirat Pongsitthithaworn said on Thursday.

He advised residents living along the river to move their vehicles and other valuables to higher ground. Hospitals and local clinics in low-lying areas have also been told to move bedridden patients to safer areas in case an evacuation is necessary. Continued …

Stimulus to lift GDP by 0.3 percentage points

The government’s first phase of the cash handout scheme, amounting to 145 billion baht, is expected to help stimulate the economy this year, raising GDP by 0.3 percentage points, with the momentum extending into the first quarter of next year, says Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul.

In fiscal 2024, the Thai Business Development Department identified 26,019 businesses across four key sectors — tourism and related services, real estate and land trading, hotels and resorts, and logistics and transportation — that potentially involve Thai nationals acting as nominees for foreign shareholders.

India’s resumption of rice exports on Sept. 28 has hit Thai exporters hard, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Assn. (TREA).

TREA President Chookiat Ophaswongse said India’s return to the market, combined with the Thai currency reaching a 30-month high of 32.37 per U.S. dollar on Sept. 30, has hurt the competitiveness of Thai rice exporters, cutting their revenues by 3-4 baht per dollar. Continued …

Transforming Plastic Waste Management in Rayong

The study aims to improve the current systems of plastic waste handling by exploring ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while increasing economic value.

The city, located on Thailand’s eastern Gulf Coast, faces challenges in managing significant amounts of plastic waste, much of which is either incinerated for energy or ends up in landfills. Thailand faces severe weather conditions today, as the Meteorological Department (TMD) issues warnings of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flash floods across 51 provinces. The northern and northeastern regions are expected to be particularly affected, with rain predicted to cover 70% of these areas.

Nittorn Intarachuen, 78, a resident of Village 6 in Tha Thong subdistrict in Sukhothai province, is suffering a deep sense of loss after watching her houses being washed away by strong currents in the recent flooding, leaving her just the three sets of clothes that she managed to grab. She saidshe has nothing left, as all her belongings and the two houses were washed away by the swollen Yom River.

PEA leads network partners to restore electricity system for flood victims

From the situation of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides from Typhoon Yangi and Typhoon Soulik, more than 100,000 people in the northern and northeastern regions have been affected, causing widespread damage, such as: electrical systems in homes or even Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution systems.

Mud removers warned over price-gouging in flood-hit provinces

Indian move puts more pressure on Thai rice prices

India is preparing to resume exports of non-basmati white rice, as inventories in the world’s biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop. New Delhi set a floor price for non-basmati exports at $490 per ton, a government order said.

Thai Airways International will no longer keep its loss-ridden Thai Smile Airways budget airline, but will terminate it now that it has transferred a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 planes to THAI, the parent airline’s chief executive officer said.

THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri said that after the fleet was transferred to be under operation by THAI, they generated more income than when they were under operation of Thai Smile. Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. Heavy rain warning for three Thai regions

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rain in three regions, with the northern region expected to face 70% rainfall. Bangkok will experience heavy showers from afternoon to evening.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 30% of the area will experience thunderstorms, mainly in Phetchaburi, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Several parties have criticized the government’s proposed bill to allow casinos to operate legally within entertainment complexes in the country, saying that tax revenue gained from casinos would not be worth the ensuing social problems.

A source from the Finance Ministry said this week that the draft of the Entertainment Complex Act is in the final stretch and set to undergo a public hearing this month. The draft stipulates that entertainment complex operators must register as a company in Thailand with registered capital of at least 10 billion baht. Thailand May Set Record for New Business Registrations

Thailand is poised to set a new record for business registrations this year, with over 90,000 new companies expected, driven largely by government measures, including the 10,000-baht handout scheme, the Commerce Ministry announced.

Almost every night, Tyler Nuckols can hear fireworks and shouting — not celebrating a holiday or marking an occasion, but trying to drive elephants back into the forest. German who skipped bail on sexual assault of a minor charge in Pattaya named

Top cop Gen.Surachate Hakparn on Wednesday confirmed disciplinary action and a criminal investigation against two senior police officers in Pattaya in response to the shocking Deutsche Welle TV documentary on the country’s sex industry aired days ago. He also named the 55-year-old German suspect charged with the sexual assault of a minor under 18 years of age, 55-year-old Jens Kirch, as the man at the center of the story who skipped bail after his arrest in September 2022.

Thai rice varieties will no longer enter world’s best rice competition

Thailand did not participate in the World’s Best Rice 2023 competition, held during the International World Rice Commission in Cebu, the Philippines, and will not do so in the coming years, Chukiat Opaswongse, honorary president of Thai Rice Exporters Assn. (TREA), said yesterday.

His announcement came one day after Vietnam’s rice variety, ST25, was voted the best rice variety of the 30 varieties submitted for competition. Thailand’s tourism revenue falls short of annual target

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has projected a shortfall in its annual tourism revenue target, with this year’s earnings expected to reach 2.07 trillion baht (US$ 58,773,427,200) instead of the projected 2.38 trillion baht (US$ 67,575,244,800).

Air Pollution Soars Across Most Of Bangkok

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday satellite data appearing on its “Dust Check” application showed that dangerous particles in the air known as PM 2.5 had soared in 48 of 50 Bangkok districts and exceeded the red code, which is 90 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in 34 of them.

Thai Anti-Trafficking In Persons (ATP) officers confiscated E-cigarettes, E-liquids, and other equipment, a total of 60,500 units worth over 10 million Baht, at a private distribution center in Bang Pa-in, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

Van Overturns In Chiang Mai, Killing 2 Foreigners, Injuring 10

Yesterday, a tourist van traveling from Chiang Mai to Pai overturned on the Chiang Mai-Pai route, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they found two foreign tourists dead outside the vehicle.

News that Hua Hin’s airport would not be accepting international flights for 2-3 years came as a shock to many local expats, who had been told flights might start later this year. It turns out there is a lot more work to do to bring the airport up to international standards, including a major reconstruction of the highway tunnel supporting the airport runway (that’s sure to foul up traffic on the important north-south expressway). Bhumjaithai comes on board to form government as Pheu Thai accepts its conditions

The Pheu Thai Party and Bhumjaithai Party on Monday evening announced progress in forming a new coalition government. Pheu Thai leader Cholanan Srikaew and outgoing Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul held a press conference at the Pheu Thai headquarters at 4pm.

The news that Pheu Thai is now in an alliance with the Bhumjai Thai Party to form a government should come as no surprise to longtime observers of Thai politics. Machiavellian measures always trumps ideals in this world.

Thailand says no rice export halt, to benefit from India’s export ban

Thailand is benefiting from India’s rice export ban and has no reason to halt its own shipments, as it has sufficient output for exports and domestic consumption, its commerce minister said on Monday.

India in late July ordered a halt to its largest rice export category in a move that will roughly halve shipments by the world’s largest exporter of the grain, triggering fears of further inflation on global food markets. Continued …

Thailand’s 2023 inflation forecast to be 1-2%, the lowest in ASEAN

Thailand’s inflation rate is the lowest among the seven ASEAN countries that have already announced their rates, with inflation for the whole year expected to range between 1% and 2%, according to Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office.

Bangkok has highest turnout in voter history

The 2023 General Election witnessed the highest voter turnout in Bangkok’s history. According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), over 74% of eligible voters cast their ballots in the election yesterday.

Representatives from the BMA announced the unofficial election result from 6,360 polling stations in Bangkok in the early hours of this morning. Out of the 4,479,155 eligible voters, 3,339,664 exercised their right to vote, which accounted for 74.9% of the total voters. Cyclone Mocha to bring heavy rains to much of Thailand over the weekend

The north, central, eastern and southern regions of Thailand will experience isolated heavy to very heavy rains from Friday to Monday due to the influence of tropical cyclone “Mocha”, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said on Friday.

The cyclone, which was hovering over the central Bay of Bengal as of 4am Friday, was moving north at about 10 km/hr with sustained winds of about 105 km/hr. It is expected to make landfall over Myanmar on either Sunday or Monday. Continued …

‘Monster’ Asian heatwave and arrival of El Niño signal severe drought crisis

Thailand is susceptible to the effects of El Niño, which is forecast by the Department of Meteorology and weather experts to commence in June. The world, Thailand included, is expected to face an intense drought due to the occurrence of El Niño, leading to reduced rainfall during the rainy season, or possibly no rain at all.

El Niño is the warm phase of a cyclical climate pattern known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, when temperatures in the Pacific reach more than 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal. Continued …

Exploring the peace corps’ 60-year history in Thailand

The Peace Corps is a United States agency established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to promote peace and friendship worldwide. Peace Corps volunteers have been working in Thailand since 1962, assisting Thai government agencies in various fields.

Currently, they operate in two main projects: teacher collaboration for development and youth development. Over 5,500 volunteers have worked with Thai communities for more than 60 years, but their work was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, Peace Corps volunteers returned to Thailand and underwent a 10-week training program before being dispatched to 29 provinces across the country. After four years of support from the ruling coalition government, Thailand is expected to vote against the decriminalization of marijuana in Sunday’s general election. The current free-for-all and weed shops lining the busy tourist streets appears unlikely to continue in the months after the election and a new parliament is settled.

Almost all of the political parties involved in the 2023 national election are in favor of returning to the previous policies of marijuana prohibition and confining its use to medicinal purposes only. Number of registered businesses at highest level in a decade

A total of 6,041 new businesses were registered in April, an increase of 12.37% over the same period last year, according to data released by the Department of Business Development under the Commerce Ministry.

Asia Biomass Plc (ABM), Thailand’s largest biomass fuel producer and trader by volume, expects revenue to grow by 20% this year to more than 3.6 billion baht thanks to its business expansion amid growing concerns over global warming.

Thailand, the world’s second-biggest rice exporter, is asking farmers to grow only one crop this year — instead of the usual two — as a likely El Nino looks set to reduce rainfall.
