Holiday road accidents claim 143 lives across Thailand

The number of road accidents in the first three days of New Year holiday travel neared 900, with more than 140. fatalities. Ayutthaya recorded the most accidents while Bangkok logged the most deaths.

From Dec. 27 to 29 there were 872 traffic accidents, 143 deaths and 841 injured people. Speeding was the most common cost of the accidents, followed by drink-driving. Motorcycles were the most common type of vehicle involved in the accidents. Continued …

Thailand braces for cold wave with thunderstorms in the south

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecasted a significant drop in temperature across northern and upper southern Thailand due to a cold air mass, with thunderstorms expected in several provinces in the south.

Three Korean Tourists Sought in Fatal Bangkok Hotel Fire Investigation

Thai police are searching for three Korean tourists who were occupants of the room where a deadly fire originated at The Ember Hotel near Khao San Road, Bangkok. The Sunday night blaze resulted in three foreign tourist fatalities due to smoke inhalation.

During an inspection of the fire scene uesterday, Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, reported that the six-story hotel’s structure on Tani Road remained intact. The fire was contained to room 511, where investigators found a severely damaged bed, suggesting it as the likely point of origin. Continued …

Elephants to get birth control shots to limit population

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is looking to use birth control shots on wild elephants to limit their population and lessen attacks on humans.

Thailand is reported to have at least 4,000 wild elephants, with its birth rate up by 7%-8% a year. The wild elephants’ population is predicted to grow to at least 6,000 in the next four years, which is inconsistent with shrinking forest areas. Continued …

Lisa tops ‘soft power’ poll

Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal, the globally renowned Thai K-pop star, is in top spot for the 2024 Thailand’s most powerful soft power poll, followed by the baby pygmy hippo “Moo Deng” and the Butter Bear mascot, or “Nong Mee Noei”.

The poll on this year’s soft power overview was conducted among 1,500 participants between Dec. 24 and 28. Of those, 25.4% voted Lisa the most influential soft power figure of the year, followed by Moo Deng, the celebrity hippo at Khao Kieow Zoo, with 15.2% of the votes and Butter Bear, the mascot of a bakery shop of the same name, with 12.7% of the votes. How Thailand Is Redefining ‘Soft Power’

Moo Deng might seem to most people like just an adorable viral baby hippo, but to the government of Thailand, where she’s from, she’s a cultural ambassador and shining example of the country’s push to boost what it calls its “soft power.”

The term soft power was coined at the height of the Cold War by American political scientist Joseph Nye, who used it to describe “when one country gets other countries to want what it wants” without the use of force, in contrast to the hard power “of ordering others to do what it wants.” Continued …

45th Dugong Carcass Found in the Andaman Sea in 2024

A male juvenile dugong, emaciated and with barnacles attached to its body, was discovered washed ashore near the Ban Bo Mamuang Pier in Khlong Thom District, Krabi. This marks the 45th dugong carcass found in the Andaman Sea this year.

Preliminary examinations revealed that the carcass belonged to a male dugong measuring 200 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 100 kilograms. The animal was not yet fully grown and appeared malnourished. No significant injuries or fishing-related wounds were found. This discovery is the third dugong carcass reported in the last four days. 57 sugar mills ordered to suspend operations until Jan 2 to address air pollution

The Ministry of Industry has ordered 57 sugar mills across Thailand to temporarily close until Jan. 2 to tackle air pollution and improve road safety during the New Year holiday.

The shutdown aims to reduce pollution caused by the illegal burning of sugarcane, which harms air quality. Stopping sugarcane transportation during this period is also expected to lower traffic risks and make travel safer for holiday travelers. Continued …

Five Injured in Bus-Truck Collision in Pran Buri

A traffic collision involving a tour bus and a Isuzu four-wheeled truck occurred on yesterday afternoon, leaving five people injured. The crash took place at kilometer marker 237+500 in Pran Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

According to the Prachuap Khiri Khan Highway Police Rescue Radio Center, the bus collided with the truck around 13:55. None of the 20, bus passengers sustained any injuries, but the passengers in the truck, carrying banquet supplies, were less fortunate. Continued …

Stormy weather forecast

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning for potential severe weather conditions affecting 28 provinces, with the southern region facing heavy to very heavy rainfall that could lead to flash floods and forest runoff. Meanwhile, cooler temperatures are expected in northern Thailand.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms are expected in 70% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, including Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. A delivery rider found himself in a humorous predicament when tasked with transporting a 6-foot mattress on his motorcycle. Baht slumps after US election

The Thai baht reached a two-month low on Thursday, with projections it might dip below 34.5 to the U.S. dollar shortly. This currency pressure follows predictions that the Federal Reserve will maintain higher interest rates longer than anticipated after Donald Trump clinched victory in the recent U.S. election.

According to the Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research), the baht was quoted at 34.34-36 against the dollar, dropping from the prior day’s rate of 34.17. Ultra-luxury houses boom amid slumping property market

Luxury houses priced at more than 100 million baht per unit have enjoyed over 450 billion baht in sales in the past 10 years, with some 394 new units being supplied to the market since 2015, property consultancy firm Colliers International reported on Wednesday.

While the rest of Thailand’s property market is contracting due to the high rejection rate of housing loans by financial institutions, buyers of ultra-luxury houses often pay in cash and therefore do not have to apply for loans, Collier’s research director Phattarachai Taweewong explained. PKK’s Klong Wan: The Hidden Gem Town You’ve Never Heard Of

If you’d asked me three years ago about Klong Wan, Thailand, I wouldn’t have known what to say. I wouldn’t even have been able to find it on a map. But after a three-month stay in Thailand a few years ago, I found myself holed up in Klong Wan for a deliciously unexpected 10 days of bliss.

Klong Wan is a remote village on the Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. EGAT aims to turn hydropower dams into giant ‘batteries’

Three more hydropower dams operated by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will be developed into giant “batteries” under a 90-billion-baht investment to supply clean power to the country, easing concerns about insufficient electricity generated by solar and wind power.

13 million speed pills seized in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Highway police seized over 13 million methamphetamine pills and arrested two couriers in Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan on Monday.

The discovery was made when officers stopped a 22-wheel trailer truck with a Songkhla license plate at a checkpoint at kilometer marker 378 of Phetkasem Road, police said at a briefing in Bangkok on Tuesday. Continued …

Death toll in bus blaze tragedy rises to 22 students, 3 teachers

The death toll from a devastating bus blaze tragedy on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok has soared to 25. Among the victims were 22 young students and three teachers.

According to a grim update, the ill-fated coach was packed with 44 students, aged between three and nine, along with their teachers from Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani. Thailand needs to revamp its rules for school bus operations

As details emerge of the gruesome school bus fire yesterday that claimed the lives of 22 young children and three teachers, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport need to start to ponder on the revamping the rules governing use of vehicles used for transporting children.

In the early afternoon incident yesterday, the three teachers in the back were unable to open the emergency exit’doors and were reportedly covering the students when their charred bodies were found by the forensic team. Water levels in Phitsanulok rise as Yom River receives upstream runoff

The flooding in Phitsanulok province, particularly in the Bang Rakam Model area, is being impacted by the overflow from the Yom River basin, which is flooding both the old and main channels of the Yom River. The affected areas include Phrom Phiram, Mueang and Bang Rakam districts.

The Bang Rakam flood retention field, part of the project to manage floodwaters after the harvest season, has now exceeded its capacity, holding 440 million cubic meters of water (110%). The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for severe weather across Thailand, predicting heavy rains in 80% of Bangkok and surrounding areas, with a high risk of flash floods and landslides.

The TMD forecasts that the upper regions of Thailand will experience unstable weather conditions over the next 24 hours. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain are expected in some north and northeast areas. Python pops into Pattaya mall

A bustling Pattaya City mall turned into a scene of chaos when a nearly 3-meter- long python made an unexpected appearance. Bank of Thailand Intervenes to Manage Baht’s Exchange Rate

Minister pledges Bt400 daily wage by year’s end

Cash transfers reach 14 million Thais

The Finance Ministry has deemed the first round of the cash handout program as successful at stimulating the economy, as more than 14 million people received transfers. Only 2% of the transfers were unsuccessful, said Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO).

Airbnb reports 30% surge in Thailand bookings

As Thailand’s tourism sees a resurgence and the industry prepares for the start of the upcoming high season in Q4, Airbnb has released Thailand travel data for the first half of this year. The data shows an increasing interest in travel to Thailand among guests, with combined domestic and international bookings surging over 30% in H1 2024 compared to H1 2023.

Travel habits among international and domestic travelers were similar, with Bangkok the #1 most-booked destination in Thailand by Airbnb guests in H1 2024. Thailand mulls welfare for all, even in the sex trade

The government is contemplating extending welfare protections to freelance workers, including those in the sex industry, akin to those available to employees registered with the Social Security Fund (SSF), contingent on their payment of income taxes.

Flooding in six Thai provinces

Seasonal flooding is affecting six provinces in the north, northeast and Central Plain, disrupting life in more than 18,0 00 households in 27 districts.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said on Monday that floods triggered by heavy rain had caused major damage in 33 provinces across the country since Aug. 16 – four in the north, six in the northeast, two in the east, three in the Central Plain and eight in the south. The flood situation in Chiang Rai remains critical, as some areas in the province have been hit by more flash floods and landslides, inundating several villages and blocking a main road connecting the province with Chiang Mai.

Moo Deng fever spreads to other zoos

The crowd-drawing power of baby pygmy hippo Moo Deng  is generating a new fervor for her pygmy relatives, attracting people to other zoos hundreds of kilometers away. Moo Deng (bouncy pig) is the two-month-old starlet at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri, where her cute antics have made her a global online celebrity.

Over 190,000 Myanmar workers arrested in Thailand’s crackdown on illegal labor

On the 106th day of Thailand’s 120-day plan to arrest illegal workers, it was reported that 193,430 Myanmar workers have been arrested.

According to the Ministry of Labor, a total of 256,213 illegal migrant workers from countries like Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia were arrested within 106 days from June 5 to Sept. 19. Continued …

Baht at 19-month high against US dollar

The baht surged to a 19-month high against the dollar, driven by a weaker U.S. currency and profit-taking in gold. On Monday, the baht opened at 32.92 per dollar, marking its highest level in 19 months, compared to Friday’s closing rate of 33.60 baht.

Thailand to postpone Oct 1 minimum wage hike

Thailand will postpone a hike in the minimum wage to 400 baht per day scheduled for Oct. 1 by about two weeks due to a lack of a quorum at meetings of the committee working on the increase, a senior labour official said on Monday.

The committee, which includes representatives from employers, labor and the government, had failed to reach a quorum at two previous meetings to discuss the planned hike, Labor Ministry Permanent Secretary Pairoj Chotikasathien said. Continued …

EV firms told to make car parts in Thailand by 2026

Car manufacturers supported by the government’s electric vehicle (EV) promotion measures must invest in producing key EV components domestically by 2026, according to the chief of the Excise Department.

Ekniti Nitithanprapas, director-general of the Excise Department, said the three crucial components of an EV that must be assembled in Thailand are: the electric motor, which converts electrical energy into kinetic energy to power the vehicle; the reducer, which functions similarly to a gearbox in combustion engine vehicles; and the inverter, which converts direct current (DC) from the battery into alternating current (AC) to supply electricity to the motor. Renewable scheme to start in Q4

Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

Thailand is set to experience heavy rainfall despite hot daytime temperatures, with 33 provinces expected to face severe weather conditions, including heavy rain. The Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts increased rain from today, Aug. 10 to 12, especially in four regions.

The National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department is expected to take a few days to consider a request from the production team of “Jurassic World 4”, the latest film the Jurassic Park franchise, to use three national parks as locations.

King cobra nest discovered in Hat Yai rubber plantation

A team of southern herpetologists and rescue workers recently discovered a king cobra’s nest in a rubber plantation in Hat Yai. They plan to incubate the eggs before releasing the hatchlings into the wild.

Upon arrival, the rescue team found a large king cobra consuming a lesser snake beside its nest. They waited for the cobra to finish its meal before attempting to capture it. Nearly 15 Million ‘Fragile’ People Entitled To Digital Wallet by September

Officially named as “fragile” types of people, nearly 15 million nationwide will be entitled to the 10,000-baht, digital wallet handout project before fiscal 2024 ends, government spokesperson Chai Wacharong confirmed yesterday.

Hua Hin’s new downtown food court is a delight

Expat News finally made a visit to Hua Hin’s newest food court, located in the middle of downtown. We were pleasantly surprised.

“The Patio” is hidden down a narrow alley directly across the street from the clock tower. A small blue sign is all that marks the spot. Developers have remade a hollowed-out space within the surrounding buildings, only a short walk through alleys or Phetkasem Road to the touristy Night Market.

Care evidently was taken in selecting food vendors, as there was a wide variety of choices, and not many duplicate vendors. Whole, salted tilapia, baked potatoes with the trimmings, meat and seafood kabobs, a variety of Thai dishes, and even pizza are available, but hardly the end of the offerings. There is also a full bar and live entertainment.

One might expect the prices to mirror the outrageous prices of the Night Market or the Cicada market, but prices at The Patio were much lower, although higher than other food courts where the rent is probably much lower. There is plenty of seating in the open air environment, and even with the crowd we saw that night, the vibe was quiet and friendly.

Public Songkran events in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is gearing up for a vibrant and larger-than-ever Songkran festival, which will take place between April 11-13. Songkran is, of course, the traditional Thai New Year, originally observed as a three-day national holiday from April 13 to 15.

The traditional activities are the pouring of scented water onto sacred Buddha images and the palms of one’s parents, as well as the famous water-splashing activity. But for many people, and in many parts of the country, Songkran means three days of water fights. Continued …

Thai air force to battle surging fine dust pollution crisis

With fine dust pollution surging to alarming levels in Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tasked the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) with spearheading the nation’s countermeasures. Air Force Chief, ACM Phanpakdee Pattanakul, confirmed the directive on Tuesday.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) revealed that the provinces of Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon are presently grappling with high levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (PM2.5). Power bills likely stable in 2024

Electricity bills in Thailand are unlikely to be trimmed from the existing rate, as the power tariff, which is used to calculate the bills, is expected to stay in a range of 4.2-4.25 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), says Khomgrich Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

The commission agreed earlier to reduce the power tariff to 4.2 baht a unit, down from 4.68 baht a unit, applicable from January to April. Continued …

A bus heading to a pier in Phuket overturned on Tuesday morning, injuring 17 Chinese tourists and three Thais, police said. The accident took place at around 8am on the outbound Thep Kasattree Road in Thalang district.

Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Board of Investment, which controls the LTR, says about 3,000 such visas were issued since the launch in 2022, but the publicity surrounding the new tax regulation has seen a 14% rise in applications. Continued …

Most Thais are worried about the impact of PM2.5 air pollution, an opinion poll conducted by Suan Dusit University found.

Uptick in COVID-19 infections is seasonal, will drop in February

The current increase in COVID-19 infections is seasonal, like other respiratory diseases, and will continue until the end of January, returning to normal between February and May, according to Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University.

Telco regulator asked to review True’s service charges and quality

Four members of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, have proposed that the commission consider the service charges and quality of True Corp. after the successful merger of Total Access Communications Co. (DTAC) and True Corp. (TRUE) in March this year.

Only B7, B20 diesel to be available in Thailand from May 1

The Energy Business Department will seek Cabinet endorsement for discontinuing the sale of B10 diesel oil, leaving only B7 and B20 oil options available, the department’s chief said.

People want single minimum wage for the whole country

Most respondents to a recent opinion poll want one minimum wage rate to be applied across the country, instead of several rates, and that the Bt2-16 wage increase proposed by the Wage Committee is too low, according to the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

Foreigners Purchase 10,703 Condo Units in Thailand This Year

Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district has officially opened Chamber 3 for visitors to get a glimpse of how the rescue mission for the 12 members of the “Wild Boar” football team and their coach, trapped in the cave for 18 days following a heavy downpour five years ago, took place.

Visa-free Indians are flocking to Thailand, including Pattaya

The experiment to cancel visas for Indian nationals is bearing more fruit than the similar relaxation for Chinese citizens. Whereas the Chinese seem concerned by media reports that Thailand is unsafe, Indians are flocking here even though airfare costs can be almost double those of the pre-Covid era.

Air India has already announced flights from Delhi to Phuket, which will be daily from the new year. Charter flights from several Indian cities, such as Mumbai and Hyderabad, to U-tapao airport, near Pattaya, are also under discussion, with IndiGo the low-cost airline. Finnish Tourists Falsely Claim Kidnapping in Patong: Overstaying Charges Pressed

On Dec. 15, Thai tourist police received a missing person report from Finnish parents that they could not contact their son, as an anonymous person allegedly impersonated a Phuket police officer and asked for 7,000 euros to release their son.

The tourist police investigated the case and were able to contact the missing person, who was publicly identified as Aki-Perreri Kristian, a 27-year-old Finnish tourist, and his friend, who was publicly identified as Siikalouma Joonass Patteri, a 34-year-old Finnish tourist. Continued …
