Soi 94 resurfacing, drainage improvements planned

Hua Hin municipality has announced that extensive resurfacing work will soon commence on Soi 94, one of the most uneven and damaged road surfaces in central Hua Hin. The project, which includes the installation of new drainage, is expected to take approximately seven months to complete.

The repair work will involve the installation of drainage pipes and resurfacing the road from the western railway intersection to Baan Chang Heng, extending to the far end of Soi 94 where the road turns right. The project scope includes the stretch from the railway tracks toward Lucky 13, Amara Resort, and The Happy Pig, reaching the top of the soi. Continued …

Thai health care is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations. Chinatown fire victims mostly migrant workers

More than 260 people have registered for assistance following the Yaowarat fire on Saturday night in Bangkok’s Chinatown, most of them migrant workers, according to the permanent secretary for human security.

The fire in Trok Pho community started about 8.40pm on Saturday. Sixty-six wooden houses in the community were burned down or badly damaged. A can of Heinz beans went viral on social media site TikTok last week. Two young tourists from Ireland and the United Kingdom expressed horror at the price tag of Bt420.

Although probably an error or mistake, it comes with a growing conflict between reports from ordinary people, including expats and Thais, about the cost of living and official Thai government data. It came in a week in which the Ministry of Commerce confirmed 0% inflation for the first six months and when June’s inflation rate was only 0.67%, defying a Reuters poll that predicted 1.13%. The majority of more than 300,000 laid-off industrial workers from recent factory closures are flocking to the services sector, particularly the hospitality industry, according to the Tourism Industry Council of Thailand’s most recent Tourism Confidence Index report.

Tourists rescued after speedboat sinks off Surat Thani coast

A speedboat carrying tourists on a fishing trip was hit by large waves, causing it to take on water and eventually sink. Five people were left stranded in the sea before being rescued by local fishing boats and the marine police.

Blaze Takes Lives of 21 Cats from Poor Woman, 5 Survive

A tragic fire broke out at 4-story commercial building in a residential area in Bangkok, late Sunday night, killing 21 cats that were under the care of a female traditional massage therapist.

Officials took 10 minutes to control the fire. There were no human injuries or fatalities. However, 21 cats on the second floor died. Officials managed to save five cats that had inhaled smoke. Cannabis advocates are calling on the government to set up a committee to study the impacts of the plant before proceeding to relist it as a narcotic.

Recriminalization of hemp, pot would wipe out Thai cannabis market worth billions

More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.

The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. Auto output could hit 14-year low

 

Thailand’s automotive production could plunge to a 14-year low this year, excluding the pandemic years of 2020-22, dipping to 1.65 million units, though monthly production is expected to start improving slowly in the fourth quarter, says Krungsri Securities (KS).

Regarding this year’s tourism revenue goal of 3.5 trillion baht ($95 billion), with 36.7 million foreign tourists expected, Minister of Tourism and Sports Sermsak Pongpanich expressed serious concerns about reaching the target.

Twin-track railway to Chumphon fully operational ‘by August’

The Nakhon Pathom-Chumphon double-track railway will be fully operational in August, with round-the-clock service along the 421-kilometer route, Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote said.

“Bung” Netiporn Sanesangkhom, a 28-year-old political activist who advocated for youth to demand reform of the monarchy under the group “Talu Wang” (meaning “breakthrough the palace”), passed away shortly before noon on May 14 at Thammasat University Hospital in Pathum Thani province after being transferred from prison with sudden cardiac arrest.

Baht likely to face near-term volatility

The baht is likely to be volatile in the near term, pending clear signs from the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) concerning interest rate cuts, with the Thai currency expected to slide to 37.25 baht to the dollar within 1-3 months, bouncing back to 36 to the greenback by year end, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

Survey finds schooling expenses have gone up 43% to a 15-year high

The cost of schooling is at an all-time high because of higher tuition fees, instruction fees and increasing prices of school supplies, amounting to an estimated 60.322 billion baht, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said.

Thanawan Polwichai, advisory chairman of the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecast, said the survey on “Cost of back to school 2024 for guardians” had 1,365 respondents throughout the country and was conducted from May 1-6. Continued …

Bangkok Metropolitan Police arrested a 20-year-old woman for allegedly creating fake accommodation booking pages to scam and defraud victims. Despite her denial of any wrongdoing, the Thai authorities affirm that the evidence against the woman, Kanyawee Prompichai, is substantial.

A study recently published in the eBioMedicine journal shows that human-induced climate change could increase the mortality rate in patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially among vulnerable groups, based on a survey in China.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. The Livestock Development Department has warned that eggs will become more expensive because hens and ducks are laying fewer eggs due to the heatwave.

The department said on Tuesday that the sweltering heat has prompted many poultry farms to report a significant drop in egg production and seek permission to raise prices. Taking a dip in Hua Hin a long time ago

It is not often I can remember what I was doing five days ago let alone 55 years, but a moth-eaten diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. A brief explanation is necessary.

A few days earlier I had arrived in Thailand after an exhausting overland trip across Asia from London. With me in Bangkok was one of the traveling companions on that journey, fellow Brit Clarence Shettlesworth. A total of 936 road accidents, with 968 injuries and 116 deaths, were reported on Sunday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in three days (April 11-13) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 11-17).

The province with the total highest fatalities was Bangkok with 8 deaths. The total highest number of accidents were Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla with 39 each, and the highest number of injuries was in Songkhla with 45 injuries. Continued …

Top industry body predicts frugal Songkran celebrations by the public

Thailand can expect an extremely crowded 2024 Songkran festival, but spending will not be as high as expected, according to the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking (JSCCIB).

Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said that this year’s Songkran festival would witness a big increase in the number of Thai and foreign tourists nationwide. 25% jump in foreign condo purchases in 2023

Foreigners spent more than 73.16 billion baht to buy a total of 14,449 condominium units in Thailand in 2023, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported on Wednesday.

Thailand’s Kaeng Tai Pla voted ‘worst food in the world’

Thai netizens are disappointed after the signature dish of the southern region, “Kaeng Tai Pla” (fish entrails sour curry), was ranked in the number one spot by TasteAtlas on its list of “100 Worst Rated Foods in the World” published last month.

Their disagreement with the list has resulted in the hashtag #saveแกงไตปลา (save Kaeng Tai Pla) trending on several social media platforms this week. Many have been posting in English urging visitors to Thailand to give this dish a chance before judging by the ranking. Continued …

A tasting tour of the Thai town obsessed with breakfast

Huge fans stutter on once-white walls. A lady wearing red lipstick and a silk dress settles into a plastic chair and points at tiny saucers on the marble table in front of her. There are two or three pork dim sum on each; she jabs one with a small fork, swipes it through a sauce that matches her outfit and pops it into her mouth. It’s 6.30am.
