Thailand is bracing for a chilly spell, with the Meteorological Department forecasting a temperature drop in northern and northeastern regions by 2–4°C during Dec. 8–10. Meanwhile, central and eastern parts will see a decrease of 1–3°C. The drop in temperature is due to a surge of cold air from China, bringing crisp mornings and chilly winds to many northern areas.

Southeast Asia floods may be the new normal, scientists say

Climate scientists expect the punishing storms, floods, and devastation experienced in Southeast Asia to become the new normal, driven by climate patterns set last year. The unusually severe floods this year, caused by late-arriving storms and relentless rain, have wreaked havoc, catching many places off guard.

Some 1,750 people have died across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, with more than 1,000 still missing in floods and landslides. In Indonesia, entire villages are isolated after bridges and roads were swept away. Bangkok on alert as high tides threaten 11 riverside communities

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has mobilized personnel to closely monitor the high-tide surge expected throughout this week (through Dec.12,), after the Hydrographic Department issued a warning that water levels in the Chao Phraya River will rise significantly, particularly between 8 am–2 pm.

Strong baht shows no signs of weakness, raising questions about Thailand’s economic reality

Despite frustration from long-term visitors, exporters, and tourism operators, the Thai baht continues to show no meaningful signs of weakening. Instead, it remains stubbornly strong, defying the country’s underlying economic conditions and adding pressure on sectors that rely on a softer currency.

Kasikorn Research Center reported last week that the baht closed at 32.02 per USD, slightly weaker than the previous day’s 31.93 but still stronger than many expected. Locomotive Crashes into Tourist Train at Kanchanaburi Station

Eighteen tourists, including both Thai and foreign nationals, were injured on Saturday after a shunting operation went wrong at Wang Yen Railway Station in Kanchanaburi Province, causing a locomotive to crash into a stationary passenger train carriage.

Thailand thanks international partners for flood aid

Prices dip again in November

Headline inflation was negative for an eighth consecutive month in November due to falling energy prices and government measures to reduce the cost of living, according to the Commerce Ministry.

Nantapong Chiralerspong, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), said the headline consumer price index fell by 0.49% year-on-year to 100.5 in November. Thai Economy Shows Moderate Improvement in October

The Thai economy moderately improved in October. Merchandise exports excluding gold expanded, led by electronic products. Foreign tourist receipts also increased in line with higher arrivals. Private consumption improved, partly supported by government measures, which also boosted the service-sector activities.

However, manufacturing production was broadly unchanged, as higher electronics production was offset by a decline in petroleum output due to temporary maintenance shutdowns. A study titled “Survey of Intestinal Parasite Contamination in Fresh Vegetables in Bangkok, Thailand”, conducted by Uthaitip Boonkasem of the School of Health Science at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, and colleagues, has revealed concerning levels of parasitic contamination in commonly consumed fresh vegetables.

The research examined the prevalence of intestinal parasites in fresh produce collected from both local and urban markets across Bangkok. Southern flood crisis deepens: after Hat Yai, Narathiwat now submerged

Severe flooding has struck nine districts in Narathiwat, affecting more than 47,000 households, with one death reported. Authorities have deployed police and district officials to wade through dangerous 2-meter-deep currents to rescue stranded residents.

Authorities today reported that rainfall continues to blanket all 13 districts of Narathiwat, causing water levels to rise rapidly. Desperate calls for help echo in flooded Hat Yai

Screams for help from flood-stricken residents filled the air in Hat Yai of this heavily inundated southern border province last night, leading to a complete evacuation order for the entire district. Historically high rainfall and torrents from higher areas near Hat Yai prompted Songkhla Gov. Ratthasart Chidchoo to mandate the total evacuation yesterday.

In Prachuap Khiri Khan, officers from Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park confiscated 202.5 kilograms of Hin Phra That stones, believed to be intended for sale in the highly sought-after amulet market. Police are pursuing those responsible for the illegal extraction.

Thailand Enforces Stricter Controls on Medical Cannabis Use

Cannabis is now under tighter control in Thailand, with the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine announcing new restrictions. The use of cannabis is permitted strictly for five medical conditions: insomnia, chronic pain, migraines, Parkinson’s disease, and anorexia — only with a doctor’s prescription.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has released new images from camera traps showing rare animals thriving in Khao Laem National Park in Kanchanaburi, highlighting the success of conservation efforts in the Western Forest Complex.The park spans Sangkhla Buri and Thong Pha Phum districts and forms part of one of Thailand’s largest contiguous forest systems.

Tracing ‘waste colonialism’ in Southeast Asia

For much of the last 50 years, high-income countries have consumed massive amounts of plastic and trash and given little thought to what would become of it. This was largely because it was out of sight, out of mind, as much of that trash ended up being shipped overseas, first to China, and then recently to Southeast Asia and other Global South countries.

But this model could be coming to an end as some of the top waste-importing countries in Southeast Asia have started to ban foreign waste imports this year. Thailand and Indonesia both announced they would stop importing plastic waste in January in an effort to combat toxic pollution. Malaysia prohibited the import of plastic scrap on July 1, Vietnam has announced that a ban on plastic waste imports will go into effect sometime this year. Continued …

Nine Thai Army soldiers have been killed during five days of clashes with Cambodian troops in several disputed border areas of northeastern Thai provinces until a mutual ceasefire was declared yesterday. The ninth and latest Thai army troop was reportedly killed yesterday in a clash with the Cambodian intruders in Tamuenthom area of Panom Dongrak district of Surin.

The fatalities and injuries of Cambodian army troops largely outnumbered those on the Thai side, mostly with sorties of air strikes conducted by the Thai Air Force’s F-16 Fighting Falcon and JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets bombarding the Cambodian forces over the disputed areas of Buriram, Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, and Surin. Gunman Kills Five at Bangkok Market Before Taking Own Life

A Thai man opened fire at Bangkok’s Or Tor Kor Market just after midday yesterday, killing five people, including four security guards and a market vendor, before turning the gun on himself. The incident occurred at a donation area associated with social activist “Kan Jompalang”.

The assailant, from Khong District, Nakhon Ratchasima, was a former security guard who had previously worked at the same company as the victims. Sai River overflows in Mae Sai after heavy downpours trigger flash flooding

Residents in several communities in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district began evacuating to higher ground early yesterday after hours of heavy rainfall caused the Sai River to swell and overflow. The Tambon Mae Sai Municipality announced at 8:21am that the situation had become critical, with rainfall recorded at 118.8 millimeters.

According to the municipality, the Sai River’s water level reached 398.31 meters at the Mae Sai Friendship Bridge, leading to overflow and flash flooding. Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in BangkokThe first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

NHSO asked to deal with overwhelming cancer patient surge

Srinagarind Hospital has urged the National Health Security Office (NHSO) to take steps to deal with the influx of cancer patients, as it has witnessed an 830% surge in treatment seekers under the Cancer Treatment Anywhere (CA) program.

Hospital director Dr. Somsak Tiamkao said on Tuesday its facility was overwhelmed by a spike in cancer patients referred to the hospital under the NHSO’s CA program. This has overstretched the hospital’s resources and staffing, he noted. Continued …

Cooking gas price remains capped

The Energy Policy Administration Committee has resolved to extend the capped price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking at 423 baht per 15-kilogram cylinder until March 31 next year.

Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Tuesday the capped retail price extension was effective from Jan. 1. It was based on the wholesale LPG price at refineries, at 20.9179 baht per kilogram. Continued …

Russian fined for Christmas lights on car

A Russian driver was fined 500 baht for covering his car with strings of small Christmas lights. Traffic police spotted and stopped his colorfully lit sedan on Sukhumvit road in Chon Buri.

Cabinet okays raising foreign staff quota

The cabinet has approved in principle increasing the number of foreign workers at businesses to deal with the shortage. According to government spokesman Jirayu Huangsab, under Thai laws the number of foreign workers at a single business is limited to a ceiling of 100 individuals, and for stateless foreign workers, the limit is 50 per business.

Upgrade of Hua Hin Airport to continue next year

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Saturday the ministry had ordered the Department of Airports, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other agencies to develop Hua Hin’s operations, including acquiring a certificate to operate it as an international airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), said the development plan for Hua Hin Airport consists of two major projects. The first, expanding the runway, has been completed. The second, work on related infrastructure aspects of the airport, such as the runway tunnel over the highway, still need 300 billion baht and budget approval. Continued …

“It will be the end of Hua Hin as a laid back beach town resort. Tourist operators from China, India and Russia will promote Hua Hin as a place to have a vacation.”

Wild Elephant Kills Man in Prachinburi

Yesterday, a wild elephant from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary crossed into a village in Prachinburi Province, fatally attacking a 45-year-old man near a sugarcane field.

The Kabin Buri Police Station was notified of the incident in the early morning. The victim was found dead on the edge of a sugarcane field. In an incident on Koh Samui, Surat Thani, a landslide caused by heavy rain buried the makeshift shelters of construction workers, leaving two men from Myanmar missing. The workers were stationed at a site where four vacation homes were being constructed located on a hillside.

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. British pensioners living abroad, including in Thailand, will soon face enhanced scrutiny, as UK banking confidentiality is set to change under new legislation targeting pension fraud. Bombing Attack Injures 5 Officers in Pattani
