Thai Police arrest one of Europe’s most wanted in Hua Hin

The Royal Thai Police, led by Immigration Bureau Division 3, struck hard yesterday afternoon, capturing one of Europe’s most wanted fugitives. Using stealth and precision, officers took down 33-year-old Finnish national Daniel Reio Karvonen in a bold operation in Hua Hin.

Teacher’s suicide exposes Thai education crisis

Chamber frets over export threat in H2

Thailand’s trade deficit with China has widened significantly, reaching 768 billion baht in the first five months of 2025 (January–May) — a sharp increase of over 200 billion baht from the same period last year, according to a report from the Ministry of Commerce.

Total trade between Thailand and China during this period stood at US$57.71 billion, up 26.1% from US$45.76 billion a year earlier. Thai exports totalled US$17.21 billion, while imports surged to US$40.50 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of US$23.29 billion. Continued …

Thailand car production rises for first time in nearly 2 years

Car production in Thailand rose 10.3% in May from a year earlier, with the first annual rise in 22 months helped by higher pickup truck output for export markets, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on  Tuesday.

    • Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

Bangkok Bank Bars Tourists from Accounts in Fraud Crackdown

Thailand’s tourists and short-term visitors are hitting a banking brick wall, with Bangkok Bank axing account services for those without long-term visas. Faulty Equipment Said to Blame for Helicopter Crash

A senior Royal Thai Police official has confirmed that the recent police helicopter crash in Prachuap Khiri Khan province was caused by mechanical failure, not sabotage or external attack.

According to the investigation, the crash occurred when the helicopter’s main rotor malfunctioned, resulting in one of the blades severing the tail rotor. Covid Cases Surge to 67,484 in a Single Week

Schools told to stay open despite Covid

Schools should not be closed to control a seasonal surge of Covid-19, as proper screening and isolation measures are sufficient to limit the virus’s spread within education institutions, says the Department of Disease Control (DDC).

In a deadly assault on yesterday morning, a group of approximately 10 armed insurgents launched a coordinated attack on Chanae Police Station in Narathiwat province, resulting in the death of one police officer and serious injury to another.

Two local festivals this weekend

Volunteers Improve Local Temple Road

Covid-19 cases top 53,500 in week, Bangkok most infected

There were 53,563 covid-19 cases reported in Thailand last week, with five deaths, and Bangkok had the most infections, according to the Department of Disease Control. Of the cases, 2,827 were inpatients and 50,736 outpatients.

Residents of a 900-unit condominium in the Chokchai Ruammit area of Bangkokare furious with their juristic person because even though two months have passed since the big earthquake on March 28, they are still unable to live in their homes.

Baht poised to weaken further

The baht is expected to depreciate to around 33.80 against the U.S. dollar this week, driven by a firmer greenback following the temporary pause in the U.S.-China tariff war. However, the Thai currency is expected to remain volatile.

Roong Sanguanruang, senior vice president for global markets planning at Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), said the bank expects the baht to depreciate to a range of 33.00-33.80 per dollar this week due to heightened uncertainties. Continued …

Warning over new VAT proposal

The proposal to lower the value-added tax (VAT) registration threshold to include businesses with annual revenue of less than 1.8 million baht could increase the burden on small retailers already grappling with weak consumer spending and intense competition, according to the Thai Wholesale and Retail Trade Assn.

Only businesses with annual revenue of 1.8 million baht or more are required to register for VAT in the current tax code. Once registered, they must submit VAT documents to the Revenue Department every month, even if there is no VAT due for that period. Continued …

Thailand welcomes nearly 13 million foreign tourists, a 1.04% decline

As of May 11, a total of 12,948,032 foreign tourists have entered Thailand since Jan. 1 — a 1.04% decrease compared to the same period last year.

New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

New expat tax: What was your experience?

Earlier this year, Thailand’s expat community learned it would have to pay taxes on any money brought into Thailand. Expats were told they are required to file a Thai tax return if their income is not explicitly excluded under a dual tax agreement (DTA). Since Thailand has more than 90 different country DTAs, Immigration officials were said to be unlikely to handle foreign tax treaties directly and may default to asking for a Thai tax return during visa renewals.

Expat News would like to hear from our readers about this issue, now that the tax filing deadline of March 31 has passed. Have you rcently applied for a retirement visa extension? What was your experience? Was a tax filing required for your renewal? Were you denied an extension for not have filed for Thai taxes? Did Immigration understand that your country’s DTA with Thailand meant you didn’t have to file a tax report? Did Immigration even bring the subject up?

“I just emailed my tax attorney because I have not gotten updates since April 2. I’m told that nothing has happened vis-à-vis the Department of Revenue. They did say that in Jomtien they are refusing to issue TIDs unless one has a work permit. So it’s completely up in the air for us at this point, but at least our taxes have been filed.” – PB

Chamber predicts 2% Thai growth this year

Thai exports are expected to post marginal growth or contract this year and next, largely due to the anticipated U.S. tariff hikes set to commence in the second half of 2025.

AirAsia flights to China face cuts amid sluggish demand

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

New expat tax: What was your experience?

Earlier this year, Thailand’s expat community learned it would have to pay taxes on any money brought into Thailand. Expats were told they are required to file a Thai tax return if their income is not explicitly excluded under a dual tax agreement (DTA). Since Thailand has more than 90 different country DTAs, Immigration officials were said to be unlikely to handle foreign tax treaties directly and may default to asking for a Thai tax return during visa renewals.

India-Pakistan airspace closure affects flights until Saturday

National flag carrier Thai Airways International has issued a notice regarding the closure of airspace at the India–Pakistan border, which will remain in effect until Saturday, May 10. The closure has resulted in several flight adjustments:

Flights between Bangkok and Pakistan (Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi) are directly affected. Flights to and from India continue to operate as scheduled. Flights between Thailand and Europe will experience extended flight times of approximately 30–40 minutes due to rerouting to avoid restricted airspace. This may cause delays in arrival times. Wet weekend forecast

The Meteorological Department has warned of thunderstorms in the upper part of the country between tomorrow and Monday and forecast rainfall for Bangkok throughout the week. In its seven-day forecast, the department said thunderstorms are predicted in the northern and northeastern regions, with some hail, strong winds, heavy rain and lightning in some areas.

Two soldiers were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting military engineers from the 15th Engineer Battalion. The incident occurred yesterday in Raman district, Yala province, as the soldiers were returning to their base after completing a canal dredging mission.

Video glimpse of tree-dwelling predator in Kaeng Krachan park

A tourist passing through a national park in Thailand struck gold with a chance encounter with an exceptionally rare wildcat. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has found 30 forged engineers’ signatures on documents for the collapsed State Audit Office (SAO) building in a probe into alleged nominee practices by China Railway No.10 (Thailand), one of the contractors of the collapsed SAO building.

Thailand inflation drops 0.22%

Thailand’s inflation turned negative for the first time in more than a year on cheaper fuel prices and increased fresh food supplies, creating more room for the central bank to cut rates further to deal with the impact of the trade war.

New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Aircraft Wreckage Recovery Delayed Following Police Aviation Crash in Sea

Authorities have successfully retrieved the main wreckage of the aircraft from the sea and have collected scattered debris from the surrounding area. These parts are now being stored along the Hua Hin beach, near the 509th Special Operations Airwing in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

The recovery and the transfer of wreckage from the police aviation havs been delayed. Experts are expected to arrive between May 3 and May 8 to assist in the removal operation. Continued …

The State Railway of Thailand plans to provide a free wi-fi service on long-haul trains to the north, northeast and south, starting late this year.

Severe Diarrhea Outbreak in Lampang Affects Over 3,000

Lampang province is experiencing a severe outbreak of diarrhea, with over 3,000 cases reported. The outbreak is widespread, with no apparent link to consumption of specific foods, and is believed to be triggered by the unusually hot weather making food spoil more easily.

Volunteer Officer Ambushed and Killed Near Base in Yala

A volunteer security officer in Bannang Sata district, Yala province, was ambushed and killed late on 27 AprilSunday while on a brief trip to a local shop, just 300 meters from his operational base. The attackers later set fire to both the officer’s car and his body.

The victim had driven from his base at Taling Chan subdistrict to purchase supplies at a grocery shop. As he exited his vehicle, gunmen hiding in nearby overgrowth opened fire with automatic weapons. Thailand is waiting for the United States to give a reply on when it will hold talks on trade tariffs, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

US Government Finalizes Tariffs on Southeast Asian Solar Imports

The U.S. government has finalized severe tariffs on imports of solar panels from four Southeast Asian countries, in connection with a complaint filed last year by major U.S.-based solar manufacturers.

The tariffs varied widely depending on the company and country, ranging from just over 41% on Jinko Solar products from Malaysia to over 375% on products manufactured by Trina Solar in Thailand. New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

China Defends Companies Behind Bangkok Building Collapse

The Chinese embassy has implored against defaming Chinese firms following the collapse of an unfinished State Audit building during last week’s earthquake in Bangkok. The contractor, ITD-CREC, is a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development Plc and China’s Railway Number 10 Engineering Group, with the latter holding a 49% stake.

Chatuchak rescuers daunted after frantic work to extract 40,000 tons of rubble

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt gave two updates to the press yesterday, both contained devastating news. He said that despite excavating 40,000 tons of rubble from a spot where a voice was heard yesterday, teams were still confronted by insurmountable obstacles. Indeed, he said that experts have suggested it may take 30-60 days to completely excavate the structure.

In the meantime, the rescue leadership has sought help from Japan to try to find some new technology to address the daunting challenges teams face. Several quakes reported in Myanmar

A total of eight earthquakes were recorded in Myanmar from midnight yesterday to 9 am today, according to the Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation Division. The earthquakes ranged from 1.7 to 3.8 in magnitude, with depths of 3 to 10 kilometers, and epicenters located 353 to 40 kilometers to the northeast of Mae Hong Son province, the division said.

Better late than never? Thailand’s Cell Broadcast system ready for emergency notifications

Thailand’s Cell Broadcast (CB) system is ready to send notifications to Thai citizens and foreign tourists in the event of natural disasters, relevant agencies confirmed. True Corp., the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC), and the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry conducted CB testing yesterday.

A Thai court issued an arrest warrant for an American academic on charges of insulting the monarchy, a rare use of the country’s “lese majeste” law against a foreigner, according to a document reviewed yesterday.

Two Monks Electrocuted While Preparing for Songkran Festival in Buriram

Yesterday at Wat Pho Yoi in Ban Yang subdistrict, Lam Plai Mat District, Buriram Province, three monks received electric shocks while helping to set up decorations for an upcoming Songkran celebration. Two monks lost their lives, and one was injured.

The monks were working with local villagers to erect bamboo poles intended to hold decorative flags and lighting around the temple’s floating pavilion. Eyewitnesses say the incident happened when a bamboo pole came into contact with a high-voltage power line. The pole, which may have still been damp from residual moisture and conducted electricity. Inflation moves higher for 12th straight month in March

Headline inflation rose by 0.84% year-on-year in March, marking the 12th consecutive monthly uptick, according to the Commerce Ministry. The increase was driven by rising prices of non-alcoholic beverages, meat, and ready-to-eat meals, along with increases in diesel fuel and housing rental costs.

Thai Households Spending Over Bt20,000 Monthly, Driven by Rent and Transport Costs

Thai households are spending an average of 21,027 baht (approximately $US 615.54) per month, with rent and transportation costs consuming the largest portion of their budgets, according to the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).

Data from the TPSO’s Economic and Trade Index Division reveals that non-food and non-alcoholic beverage expenses accounted for a substantial 60.9% of average monthly household spending. A report by the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP) shows concern over the impact of a renewed trade war under U.S. President Donald Trump, who has announced new import tariffs affecting several countries, including Thailand, set to take effect on April 9.

6 Foreign Tourists Injured as Tour Bus Skids Off Highway in Surat Thani

A tour bus crashed yesterdayin Surat Thani, which left six foreign tourists injured while en route to Koh Samui. The crash occurred  along Southern Seaboard Highway 44 in the Phra Saeng district. The bus, operated by Rittichai Tourism, had departed from Ao Nang in Krabi and was heading toward the island destination when it veered off the road, reportedly due to wet surface conditions.
