Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax
“I just returned from the Prachuap Khiri Khan tax office at the Prachuap provincial office (Not Hua Hin). I had my total amount that was transferred to fill in their forms, as well as proof the the monies were from Social Security office.
“While speaking to the personnel, they asked my wife where did my money come from. My wife showed them my form 1099 that showed how much was paid to me from the SSI. They then told her that all of that income on that piece of paper would be taxed and I would need to pay thousands on it to their office. I tried to explain to them (with wife’s help in Thai) that the DTA for SSI to Thailand is not taxable.” Continued …

A 67-year-old man was fatally crushed by a wild elephant yesterday while inspecting his palm plantation in Khao Sam Roi Yot District.
The head of Kui Buri National Park confirmed the death of Chaliyo from Sam Roi Yot District, who was found lying on his back with severe injuries after being trampled by an elephant. Sixty-seven of 77 provinces in Thailand were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, with the worst smog blanketing greater Bangkok, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTA).

Summer to start as February ends, bringing highs of 43°C
Thailand will officially enter the summer season at the end of February, with high temperatures lasting until May, the Thailand Meteorological Department announced yesterday. The Thai summer is characterized by a hot southerly wind covering the upper part of the country, it added.

PM orders review of 2-5pm, Buddhist holidays alcohol sale ban
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered a review of the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages from 2pm to 5pm following calls by business groups for eased regulations to support tourism.
The ban is not covered in the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act. It was announced in a decree by the coup regime of Thanom Kittikachorn in 1972 to deal with officials drinking during work hours, and has never been rescinded. Continued …

Russian Tourist Dies After Sliding into the Sea from Tour Boat in Pattaya
A 33-year-old Russian tourist lost his life yesterday after sliding from a water slide at the rear of a tour boat near Koh Sak, off the coast of Pattaya.
Rescue personnel from Pattaya’s marine disaster response team and the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene by speedboat. Upon arrival, they found the tourist, identified as Andrew Anganov, lying unconscious without a pulse on the deck of a large tour boat near Koh Sak. Sacred jujube tree takes center stage in annual ceremony in Uttaradit
A significant spiritual event is currently taking place at Uttaradit’s famous Wat Phra Thaen Sila At. Though the royal temple in the Laplae district is renowned for its sacred laterite slab dating as far back as the Sukhothai period (1238-1438), it also boasts a towering 10-meter-tall jujube tree that stands tall on the temple grounds. It is believed that this tree is a descendant of the tree where the Buddha instructed his disciple Ananda to hang his alms bowl.
