256 tons of electronic waste seized from Laem Chabang Port

The Customs Department has seized over 256 tons of electronic waste smuggled from Japan and Hong Kong via Laem Chabang Port, department spokesperson Panthong Loykulnanta told a press conference.

Panthong said that the Customs Department has been vigilant in monitoring illegal imports of electronic waste. Austrian packaging manufacturer Alpla posted positive financial results in 2024, increasing its turnover to €4.9 billion, up 4% from €4.7 billion the previous year. The company said its commitment to the circular economy is ‘paying off’ as it announced a goal to double its current plastic recycling capacity to 700,000 tons/year by 2030.

As virgin and recycled plastic production shifts eastward, Alpla announced it will open a new plant in Thailand in 2025, without offering more details. Green jet fuel production starts in Thailand

PTT Global Chemical says it has started producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Thailand for the first time, with planned annual output of 6 million liters for the first phase.

Expat tax returns due by March 31

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

To file online 

Changes to tax regulations in 2023 make all income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year declarable. The income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin. The question now is how many foreign taxpayers will file returns between now and March 31. After that, it remains to be seen if follow-up actions will be taken against those who fail to do so. Forty-three people were killed and 200 injured in road accidents across Thailand on Thursday, the seventh of the “10 dangerous days” of the New Year holidays.

The casualties were recorded in 196 road crashes, the Road Safety Directing Center of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported yesterday. Thunderstorms possible tomorrow

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in certain areas. Bangkok and central regions are expected to experience the most severe conditions, affecting 22 provinces in total.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms are expected in 30% of the area, with heavy rain, particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 34°C. Easterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h. Lax Law Enforcement Cited for Alarming Road Fatalities in Thailand

Advocates are raising concerns about insufficient enforcement of road safety laws, which they believe is significantly contributing to Thailand’s staggering road fatality rate. On average, the country registers around 48 road deaths daily.

Speaking at a recent event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, advocates pressed for immediate improvements in law enforcement. Facebook scams and fraudulent activities have inflicted significant financial damage, totaling 718 million baht over the past year, according to the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong.

A total of 514,590 krathong floats were collected from Bangkok waterways after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down 19.6% from last year. Lat Krabang district saw the highest number of floats.

Pattaya authorities and fishermen collect debris after Loy Krathong Festival

Officials from the Pattaya Environmental Department, along with local fishermen, launched a clean-up operation along the Pattaya Beach at 3 M on Nov. 16. The team worked together to collect krathong (floating lantern) debris along a 5-kilometer stretch of the beach, including Jomtien Beach.

The clean-up effort came in the aftermath of the Loy Krathong Festival, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, when both Thai and international tourists participated in the traditional ritual of floating krathongs to pay respects to the goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Studies have shown that loneliness and isolation can have a negative health impact, comparable to risks associated with smoking up to 15 cigarettes or drinking six glasses of alcohol per day.

According to a report by the National Economic and Social Development Council, the number of Thais who received mental health services increased from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023. FED (Foundation for Education and Development) in Thailand announced that the Thai government has allowed undocumented workers from four countries, including Myanmar, to make new registrations and accompanying children under the age of 18 to stay legally in Thailand.

For workers whose permits will expire on Feb. 13, 2025, the duration of each residence and work permit will be extended twice from two years to four years, and the period for changing jobs will be increased from one month previously to two months. Continued …

All police stations nationwide are being alerted to guard banks where “fragile” groups of people are withdrawing 10,000 baht handouts, after finding out that loan sharks were waiting there to grab the money. A Maha Sarakham police team tightened security at the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and other bank branches in this central northeastern region.

Police Col. Kraithong Chaisingh, head of Maha Sarakham city police station, said he sent a team of policemen to maintain law and order at this BAAC branch, which was crowded with farmers, and other bank branches and locations where vulnerable groups of people and the disabled are streaming in to check whether the 10,000 baht giveaway had been deposited before queuing up to withdraw money either via ATM if they have a card or wait to do so from a teller. Thailand sees 1.9 million new electric vehicle registrations, a 13% decline

As many as 1,876,356 electric vehicles (EVs) were registered in Thailand in the first eight months of 2024, a nearly 13% drop compared to the same period last year. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) said on Friday that registrations had declined by 280,091 vehicles from the 2,156,447 in the same period last year.

The department said that despite the lower number of registered EVs in 2024, the trend of new EV registrations was still growing, especially after January. Continued …

Famous Tham Luang cave faces worst flooding in 13 years

Mae Sai district’s most famous cave, Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non, is currently facing its worst flooding in 13 years, after the mountain range was lashed by torrential rain, measured at 263mm yesterday alone.

British cave explorer Vernon Unsworth, who has been living in Mae Sai district with his Thai wife for more than a decade, inspected the cave and said that the water rushing out of the cave’s entrance is stronger than a waterfall, indicating that all the chambers in the cave are now flooded. Massive amounts of support reaches flood victims in Chiang Rai

Manpower, equipment and relief supplies from various sources have been arriving in Chiang Rai province to help flood victims, many of whom remain stranded in their homes by the worst flooding for three decades.

Runoff water from a mountain range in Myanmar’ Shan state and from watershed areas is yet to reach the Sai and Ruak rivers. Satellite images, provided by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), show 767 hectares on the Myanmar border under water, while nearly a thousand hectares in Mae Sai district are flooded. Thailand is seeing increasing cases of diseases caused by flooding, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Wednesday, urging the public to avoid wading through floodwater and mud.

The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) today warned residents in 48 provinces of flash floods and water runoff due to heavy rains brought by the monsoon trough over the upper country from Friday to Wednesday (Sept. 13-18).

The office also predicted that water levels in the Mekong River would rise by 0.5 to 1 meter from today to Wednesday due to heavy rains in the north, the upper northeast, and Laos. Two Russians among 10 killed in Phuket landslide

Ten people were killed when their houses were buried by a landslide in Phuket province on Friday. The landslide from the Nakkerd Mountain killed two Russians, six Myanmars and one Thai citizen. As for the 10th deceased, there is no information regarding nationality yet.

10 Northeast provinces at risk of severe drought in next 10 years

Ten provinces in Thailand’s northeastern region are likely to experience severe drought over the next decade, according to drought trends forecast by the Climate Change and Environmental Department on Wednesday. The forecast was based on two climate model scenarios: one assuming moderate greenhouse gas emissions and one with high emissions.

The moderate emissions scenario assumes greenhouse gas emissions in 2100 will be close to current levels, potentially raising the global average surface temperature by about 2.7 degrees Celsius between 2081 and 2100. Thai unemployment drops, except in Bangkok

Thailand’s overall unemployment rate dropped from May to June, except in Bangkok, according to a new survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

Institute predicts 8.8% jump in food exports to Bt1.6 trillion

The value of Thailand’s food exports is expected to increase by 8.8% year-on-year to 1.6 trillion baht this year, driven by growing global demand and a decrease in the prices of raw materials, says the National Food Institute (NFI).

Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

At least 10% of people in Thailand have indulged in heavy drinking over the past 12 months, a recent report released on Monday by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation shows.

The Thai Electric Vehicle Assn. (EVAT) is urging manufacturers of electric vehicles (EVs) in Thailand to prepare for oversupply in the next few years due to the production requirement under the EV 3.0 policy.
