Expats in Hua Hin left stranded as bank accounts locked without warning

Foreign residents in Hua Hin and across Thailand are reporting significant inconvenience after Bangkok Bank froze their accounts without prior notice, leaving many unable to access funds for daily expenses, bills, and emergencies.

The stricter identity verification measures, which began intensifying in May 2025, follow regulatory measures from the Bank of Thailand to curb financial fraud, money laundering, and so-called “mule” accounts used in scams. Tourists and residents gathered at the Chao Mae Tubtim Shrine yesterday to take part in Hua Hin’s annual “Sea Misfortune Sending” boat release ceremony, a tradition dedicated to making merit for ancestors and seeking protection for the local fishing community.

Saran Withee Festival in PKK Sept 12-13

The Saran Withee Festival: The Colors of the Wind 2025 will take place Sept. 12–13, from 5-9pm in Prachuap Khiri Khan about an hour’s drive south of Hua Hin. The event wil be held at the Saran Withee Bridge Pier.

The event features a hot air balloon show, an lluminated bridge, concerts by artists and local students, local food, and fresh seafood.

Hua Hin Soi 106 railway crossing underpass ruled out

Local residents in the Nong Kae community of Hua Hin are calling for safer and more convenient ways to cross the railway at Soi 106 after officials confirmed an underpass cannot be built at the site.

On Friday, the mayor of Hua Hin City Municipality assigned Natthawan Mitdee, the mayor’s secretary, along with City Council President Cheep Suksri, council member Sorayut Premkamolnet, the director of the engineering office, and relevant officials to meet with representatives from the State Railway of Thailand, the head of the Nong Kae community, and local residents. Truck overturns on Phetkasem Road spilling 5 million meth pills

A lorry carrying millions of methamphetamine tablets crashed after a tire burst, scattering its illicit cargo across a stretch of Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) in Kui Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The driver fled the scene.

The crash occurred at around 7.30 am yesterday near Ban Samrong, Sam Krathai subdistrict. Police and rescue teams found a white Isuzu truck with Bangkok registration plates, its rear tires blown and the vehicle resting against a guardrail. No driver or passengers were found at the scene. Anutin formally appointed Thailand’s 32nd prime minister

The Bhumjaithai Party held the royal command ceremony in which Anutin Charnvirakul, party leader and MP on the party-list system, was formally appointed as the 32nd prime minister of Thailand yesterday.

Arphat Sukanan, secretary-general of the House of Representatives, brought the royal command appointing the prime minister to the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters on Phaholyothin Road. He then read out the royal command, in which His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (King Rama X) formally appointed Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister of Thailand. Heavy rainfall alert issued for 50 Thai provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rainfall across 50 provinces, including Bangkok and its vicinity, with an expected 80% coverage of intense downpour.

UK man the latest foreign tourist to die in high rise balcony fall in Pattaya

Twelve people have been arrested after authorities raided a suspected illegal gambling setup operating out of a private residence in the coastal district of Thap Sakae. The late-night operation saw gamblers scatter in all directions as officials closed in on the property.

Thai woman dies in attack by wild elephant in Surat Thani forest

A Thai woman lost her life in an attack by a wild elephant while traveling on a motorcycle with her son through a forest in the southern province of Surat Thani. Officers rushed to Thap Nok Forest within the Khlong Yan Wildlife Sanctuary after being alerted to the elephant attack by one of the victims, a 37-year-old woman.

Thailand’s trade deficit with China has widened significantly, reaching 768 billion baht in the first five months of 2025 (January–May) — a sharp increase of over 200 billion baht from the same period last year, according to a report from the Ministry of Commerce.

Thailand car production rises for first time in nearly 2 years

Car production in Thailand rose 10.3% in May from a year earlier, with the first annual rise in 22 months helped by higher pickup truck output for export markets, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on  Tuesday.

Bangkok Bank Bars Tourists from Accounts in Fraud Crackdown

Thailand’s tourists and short-term visitors are hitting a banking brick wall, with Bangkok Bank axing account services for those without long-term visas. In a bid to ward off international cybercriminals, the bank, Thailand’s largest, has stopped tourists from opening deposit accounts, applying for credit cards, and using mobile services.

Faulty Equipment Said to Blame for Helicopter Crash

A senior Royal Thai Police official has confirmed that the recent police helicopter crash in Prachuap Khiri Khan province was caused by mechanical failure, not sabotage or external attack.

According to the investigation, the crash occurred when the helicopter’s main rotor malfunctioned, resulting in one of the blades severing the tail rotor. Organizers said over 1,000 participants gathered at Rajabhakti Park yesterday for the third stage of the “Run Khan Do II” wellness running series, an event aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and boosting local tourism in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Covid Cases Surge to 67,484 in a Single Week

Thailand is grappling with a growing Covid-19 crisis, as 67,484 new cases were reported within a week, alongside eight fatalities. Schools told to stay open despite Covid

Schools should not be closed to control a seasonal surge of Covid-19, as proper screening and isolation measures are sufficient to limit the virus’s spread within education institutions, says the Department of Disease Control (DDC).

Dr. Jurai Wongsawat, spokeswoman for the DDC, yesterday said cluster outbreaks of the virus have been identified in several settings: six outbreaks in prisons involving 198 cases, five in schools with 258 cases, two in military camps, totaling 178 cases, and one hospital cluster with 35 cases. New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

The current global trend of social change toward an aging society is becoming more evident. According to the United Nations’ World Population 2022 report, the global population is projected to reach 8 billion, with 10% being over the age of 65. This percentage is expected to increase to 16% by 2050.

In Thailand, by 2024, the country will have fully transitioned into an aging society. Data from the Ministry of Interior shows that in 2023 Thailand had approximately 13 million people aged 60 and above, making up one-fifth of the total population of 66,057,967. Rice farmers to sue if water is drained into their rice fields

Rice farmers in the Sena district of Ayutthaya province are threatening to sue the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) for compensation if the department drains excess water into their rice fields before Sept. 15, flooding their unharvested crops.

Pradab Kongpramoon, a farmer in Ban Krathum in Sena district, said that there are more than 22,400 hectares of rice fields, with only some having been harvested. Of his own 8 hectares, he said his rice plants are about 90-days old and can be harvested in the next 30 days, adding that water from a nearby canal is already flooding his field. Continued …

Fishermen told the media that they had never seen so many Blackchin tilapia being washed ashore, although they had seen them at sea.

NACC probes ‘tea money’ demands to get children into Khon Kaen schools

Eight secondary schools in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen are under investigation by officials from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC,) for allegedly demanding “tea money” of up to 100,000 baht from parents of students who fail the entrance examination.

Top industry body predicts frugal Songkran celebrations by the public

Thailand can expect an extremely crowded 2024 Songkran festival, but spending will not be as high as expected, according to the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking (JSCCIB).

25% jump in foreign condo purchases in 2023

Foreigners spent more than 73.16 billion baht to buy a total of 14,449 condominium units in Thailand in 2023, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported on Wednesday.

Thai ferry fire: Authorities blaze into action saving all aboard

Like many locations in Thailand, Hua Hin has seen a significant rise in air pollution, as levels of PM 2.5, the fine particulate matter known for its adverse health effects, have reached concerning levels over the last 24 hours.

Old and sick brutally abused tigers in condemned Asian breeding horror

We have just helped rescue 15 elderly and sick tigers and leopards from a condemned breeding mill in Thailand and likely helped save them from death. But there are up to 15 critically endangered Indo-Chinese leopards and sick and elderly tigers that still need rescue right now or face life in a zoo (if they survive). These are wild creatures who have lived chained and beaten their entire lives.

Last year, we told you that a horror big-cat breeding facility in Thailand had been shut down, and its resident cats were in urgent need of relocation to our partner sanctuary. We were there in December when the first 15 rescued big cats arrived at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). Thai data privacy watchdog uncovers massive breach involving over 5,000 organizations

Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) recently uncovered a significant privacy breach involving 5,261 organizations. Among these, a majority of 4,886 were government agencies from both central and local sectors. The lapse in data protection was observed between Nov. 9 of the previous year and Jan. 12.

The violations were primarily due to excessively revealing personal data on various websites and a noticeable absence of necessary security measures to safeguard this private information. As Hua Hin prepares to welcome its new elevated train station, set to open on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand has released a revised train schedule effective Dec. 15, offering enhanced travel options for commuters between Hua Hin and Bangkok. The Notification of the Ministry of Industry on Management of Waste or Unused Materials B.E. 2566 (2023), enacted under the Factory Act B.E. 2535 (1992), marks a pivotal shift in the responsibilities and liabilities of factory operators as waste generators, which under the new notification no longer end when the waste is collected by a third-party waste processor.
