Thailand’s Healthcare Expansion Strategy

Thailand’s Public Health Ministry is implementing a comprehensive strategy to enhance healthcare accessibility and attract international patients. The initiative includes establishing a health marketplace that centralizes public and private healthcare services, alongside a data and access initiative linking national health databases to improve service delivery and inform policy decisions.

The ministry will also upgrade i-Claim, the insurance reimbursement system for private claims at public hospitals. By targeting affluent Thai patients, foreign visitors, and overseas governments, particularly from neighboring regions like South Asia, Bhutan, and the Maldives, Thailand aims to generate sustainable revenue for its health system. A key proposal involves making medical visas more flexible to match individual treatment durations, while incorporating electronic appointments, advance referrals, and immigration data integration to streamline the patient experience and ensure security. Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) has issued a warning regarding a severe fever linked to Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), a potentially fatal tick-borne viral infection, following three reported cases and two deaths in the country this year.

DDC Director General Dr. Montien Kanasawat revealed that this year up to yesterday, the country recorded three cumulative cases and two fatalities, representing a 66.7% mortality rate. Stress shows real shipping squeeze may still be ahead

Shipping costs are being driven by a combination of geopolitical tensions, severe weather events, and capacity constraints in critical maritime corridors. Conflicts in the Middle East, specifically involving Iran, have caused shipping standstills in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing vessels to seek alternative and often more expensive routes.

Simultaneously, the El Nino weather pattern has triggered a severe drought in Panama, leading the Panama Canal Authority to restrict daily vessel transits and reduce maximum drafts, which creates significant bottlenecks and increases costs.

These disruptions are compounded by rising fuel prices and increased demand for priority passage through limited channels. For example, a single tanker recently paid a record US$5.3 million to secure a priority transit slot through the Panama Canal to avoid drought-related delays.

Furthermore, the ongoing conflict between the US and Israel and its impact on Iran has pushed more traffic toward the Panama Canal as a fallback for energy shipments. These logistical pressures, alongside broader shifts in trade routes like the emergence of the Arctic as a secondary corridor, are placing sustained upward pressure on global freight demand and costs. – Bangkok Post

Thailand is thus the first country in Southeast Asia to have successfully increased its national tiger population,” says Axel Krumsiek, head of the Asia division at WWF Germany. Inside Thailand’s controversial plan to open forests to industry

Government plans to liberalize forest use have sparked fears that Thailand’s pristine natural landscapes will be opened to industrial activities, including waste disposal. The Cabinet this month approved in principle a draft regulation allowing the commercial and industrial use of larger forest zones – including national reserves. If enacted, the scope of permitted activities will be expanded from the current 10 categories to 16.

The new additions would allow forestland to be allocated not just for waste-management operations but also solar and wind farms, telecommunications towers, and various economic, social and security development projects. Continued …

The Green Money Problem: Why Thailand’s Small Firms Can’t Get In

Thailand has built much of the machinery of sustainable finance — a taxonomy, disclosure rules, transition loans and a coming climate fund. What it has not yet solved is who can afford to use it.

That was the central tension at the second panel of the Nation Visionary Club Roundtable, where a World Bank economist, a Bank of Thailand official, and representatives of two of the country’s largest commercial banks described a system in which the cost of proving environmental performance excludes precisely the businesses that make up most of the economy. FTI Chair Pimjai Leeissaranukul stated the decline was further exacerbated by a prolonged contraction in the automotive sector, due to sluggish sales and tighter credit access. Vehicle sales fell 17.4% year-on-year over the first seven months of this year, while small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) continue to struggle with high production costs, limited access to capital and stiff competition from imported goods. The next step is for the municipality to submit these three draft ordinances to the Hua Hin Municipal Council for approval. This is a crucial mechanism to improve the cleanliness and environmental management of Hua Hin.

There are also reports that, in addition to the aforementioned support, Chairman Dhanin and the CP Group are preparing to provide further support to fund Nene’s journey in the crucial AGT 2026 final round. Previously, Add Carabao, a legendary folk artist, donated 1,000,000 baht in cash to Nene as encouragement for her journey in pursuing her dreams on a global level.

From a young girl from Phuket to the global stage, today Nene is not alone. She is supported by her family, fans, fellow artists, and the private sector. She competes in the America’s Got Talent final competition next week.

EEC’s Hospitality and Retail Bet on Lifestyle

While government officials at yesterday’s “EEC Never Stop: The Next Chapter” roundtable focused on industrial targets and infrastructure timelines, another strand of the discussion argued that the Eastern Economic Corridor’s next phase depends as much on hotel rooms, shopping baskets, and public parks as it does on factory floors.

Industry leaders — including Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun (Thai Hotels Assn.), Nat Wongpanich (Thai Retailers Assn.), Ekanut Ungphakorn (Asset World Corp.), and Meesak Chunharakchote (Thai Real Estate Assn.) — painted a picture of a region with untapped tourism and consumer potential. Continued …

Step-by-step guide to registering a company in Thailand for foreign investors

Foreign investors typically establish a company in Thailand by following steps such as company structuring, reserving a company name, registering with the Department of  Business Development (DBD), and completing necessary tax, licensing, and employment registrations. The specific pathway depends on the company’s activities and the extent of foreign ownership, which influences licensing and regulatory requirements.

A Thai-incorporated company is generally considered foreign under the Foreign Business Act (FBA) if foreigners own at least 50% of its capital. Certain business activities are restricted for foreign investors, making the company’s intended operations vital for determining permissible ownership levels and licensing options. Continued …

Mayor says US Navy visit created ‘new Pattaya image’

The five-day visit by US sailors from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln group has helped promote a “new image” of Pattaya as a diverse tourist destination, rather than mainly about “nightlife and beer bars”, according to Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet.

While Pattaya still has a nightlife scene, the mayor said, it is now concentrated in specific areas. The city also offers a wide range of tourist goods and activities – shopping, restaurants, cultural attractions and activities for different groups of tourists. Continued …

US servicemen left behind a financial windfall in Pattaya but also a spirit of optimism and generosity

The USS Abraham Lincoln left Thailand on Sunday after nearly 5,000 US sailors and Marines poured into Pattaya following 286 days at sea, spending heavily across shops, restaurants, hotels, bars and local services. The five-day visit delivered a major low-season windfall, produced striking stories of 1,000- and 2,000-baht tips, and sent some retail sales surging.

Yet, the sailors also surprised many locals by spreading their spending far beyond nightlife, while workers repeatedly described them as polite, disciplined and generous. After months of combat operations linked to Iran, their first substantial break ashore brought money, momentum and a rare burst of optimism to Pattaya. Continued …
