Researchers in Thailand are exploring the science behind herbal compresses

The scent of fragrant lemongrass mingles with earthy ginger and tangy tamarind, punctuated by the sharp, menthol-like aroma of camphor. It’s a familiar smell for spa-goers: a traditional Thai herbal compress. The treatment combines herbs in a cotton cloth, which is wrapped into a compact ball and steamed for around 10 minutes before the practitioner applies it to the body, typically after a massage.

Herbal compresses have been used for centuries for muscle aches, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation. However, it’s unclear how much benefit comes from the herbs: a 2015 review paper highlighted that the effects were mainly associated with heat, which increases blood flow and reduces pain. Consumer confidence rose for a second consecutive month in November, bolstered by government economic measures and tourism, a survey showed on Thursday.

Modest growth likely for Thai vehicle production in 2025

Thailand’s automotive sector continues to face significant economic and financial headwinds as of the third quarter of 2024. According to data provided by the Asean Automotive Federation, total vehicle sales declined by 25.3% year-on-year as of September 2024 to tally 438,303 units.

Vehicle production followed the downward trend in sales, declining by 18.6% year-on-year over the same period to total 1.13 million units. Thailand’s agricultural exports surge to Bt1.54 trillion Jan-Oct

Thailand’s agricultural sector chalked up a trade surplus of over 900 million baht in the first 10 months of the year, driven by strong export performance, a senior official of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) said on Thursday.

Total agricultural trade value climbed to 2.15 trillion baht between January and October, representing a 6.49% increase compared to the same period in 2023, office Secretary-general Chantanon Wannakejohn, said. Heavy rain in Hua Hin and Cha Am are anticipated to impact tourism during the upcoming three-day holiday, potentially worsening domestic visitor numbers. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) identified natural disasters as a critical factor to monitor during the high season.

Earlier this week, continuous rainfall led to flooding in Cha Am, Hua Hin, and parts of Phetkasem Highway, with water levels measuring between 20 and 40 centimeters. Udom Srimahachota, Thai Hotels Assn. Vice president, noted that tourists faced an additional two-hour travel time to reach their destinations in these areas. Medical experts in Thailand are advising high-risk groups to receive boosters for Covid-19, given a recent surge in cases and fatalities. Consumer confidence index plunges to lowest in 14 months

The rising cost of living and the severe flooding in several areas of Thailand are among the reasons the consumer confidence index has once again dropped, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said on Thursday.

UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting reported that Thailand’s consumer confidence index in September stood at 55.3, dropping from 56.5 in July. The index has been falling for seven consecutive months and is now the lowest in 14 months, or since August 2023. Continued …

World Bank lowers Thailand’s GDP growth forecast from 2.8% to 2.4%

The World Bank has reduced Thailand’s GDP growth forecast for 2024 to 2.4%, while projecting that the Chinese economy will decline from 4.8% this year to 4.3% in 2025, owing to a weak property market and low consumer and investor confidence.

The World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific Economic Update forecasts released on Tuesday said that the economy in the East Asia and Pacific region would expand by 4.8% in 2024 but would slow to 4.4% in 2025. Continued …

State revenue collection on course to hit target

The Finance Ministry is confident that revenue collection for fiscal 2024, which ended on Sept. 30, met its target as collections gradually improved, bolstered by higher contributions than expected from the Revenue Department and state-owned enterprises.

Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said the latest report on net revenue collection from the Finance Ministry indicates for the first 11 months of fiscal 2024 (October 2023 to August 2024), the government collected net revenue (after tax refunds) of 2.452 trillion baht, which is 17.4 billion baht or 0.7% less than the target. Approvals granted to 11 out of 14 proposals for industrial estates

Some 14 industrial estates have requested approval for setting up new estates or expanding current ones this year, expecting to support factory investment of 480 billion baht, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) said.

The authority has approved 11 industrial estates, while three others were under consideration, the authority’s director, Sumet Tangprasert, said. Rice prices across major Asian hubs declined to their lowest in more than a year this week, pressured by slow demand and increased supply after top exporter India recently eased restrictions on exports of the staple.

The Labor Ministry has reported that Thailand exported over 55,000 workers during the 2024 fiscal year, resulting in a boost of over 270 billion baht to their families’ incomes.

Thai worker killed in northern Israel

One Thai worker was found dead and another suffered a severe concussion after an anti-tank rocket was fired at the Kibbutz Yir’on Agricultural Estate in northern Israel, near the border with Lebanon on Friday morning, according to the Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv.

Thailand’s legal cannabis story – one year later

In June 2022, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize cannabis following the Food and Drug Administration’s removal of all parts of the plant from the national narcotics list. Thailand had previously legalized medical cannabis in 2019, and its leaves in 2021.

At the time, the Thai government said the new regulations were intended to promote small-scale cannabis farms and bring a much-needed boost to the country’s agricultural sector, which accounts for around one-third of the national workforce. Tourist visa requirements eased for Chinese visitors

The government has further relaxed its tourist visa requirements and shortened the standard time required for approving visas for Chinese visitors, in a bid to make the process easier for people visiting the country.

Last week alone, 95,581 Chinese arrived in Thailand, representing the largest proportion of international visitors, followed by Malaysians (73,810), South Koreans (37,754), Indians (27,707) and Vietnamese (25,717), deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said on Thursday. Continued …

China Expands the Number of Countries for Travel

China has increased the number of countries that its big-spending tourists can visit by more than 70 following the lifting of its last COVID-19 travel restrictions. The decision comes as international flights to and from the country gradually return to their pre-pandemic levels.

Move Forward Party’s Thai PM Candidate Pita Fails First Round of Voting

Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party, has failed to gather sufficient votes of 375 from the joint sitting Parliament, resulting in him failing the first round of the prime ministerial vote.

Pita needed at least 375 out of 749 votes from the upper and lower houses to take the Thai prime minister office. However, the official results are that the PM-hopeful was only able to gather 324 votes, which was not half of the parliament. Moreover, only 674 parliamentarians were present at the time of voting. Thailand is facing a deep political crisis as Pita loses key vote

Thai politics took a step further into what could be a serious political crisis on Thursday when parliament failed to elect list MP Pita Limjaroenrat as Thailand’s 30th prime minister, even after he was the only nominee before parliament supported by an eight-party coalition representing 72% of voters and 62% of seats in the House of Representatives.

In an often ill-tempered and fiery debate, opposition to Pita came from the Senate and MPs aligned with the outgoing government, which decisively lost the May 14 general election. Continued …

National Police Chief Damrongsak Kittipraphat early this morning ordered police nationwide to prepare for possible protests, with Parliament strongly guarded following prime minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat failing to get enough votes to take the helm of the government at a joint House/senate meeting yesterday.

The pro-Pita votes cast by the lawmakers yesterday only accounted for 324 votes, 13 of which came from senators, but it was 51 votes short of a minimum of 375 accounting for more than half the combined total of MPs and senators as required by law. Continued …

Residents of tourist city Pattaya in Chonburi province have urged police to investigate gangs of motorcycle riders in the sois off South Pattaya Road in Bang Lamung district, whose behavior at night has become a noisy nuisance.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) expects a prolonged delay in the selection of a prime minister and formation of a new government, leading to protests that, if violent, will significantly affect tourism revenue, causing a loss of 500 billion baht, or a one percentage point decline in GDP.

Thailand prepares for 14,000+ flights this Songkran

Thailand will facilitate 14,180 domestic and international flights over the Songkran holidays, from today until April 17, according to the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (Aerothai). This represents a 66% increase in flights compared with the same period last year.

On average, there will be 2,026 flights per day, Aerothai President Nopposit Chakrapitak revealed yesterday. Kazakhstani tourist arrested for rampage on southern Thailand beach

Police arrested a Kazakhstani tourist for attacking people and destroying property yesterday at Haad Rin Beach in Koh Pha Ngan, Surat Thani province, southern Thailand.

Nok Air scraps only route to Mae Hong Son in northern Thailand

Nok Air flights between Bangkok and Mae Hong Son Airport in northern Thailand will be discontinued on April 19. The province, home to the popular backpacker town Pai, will only be accessible by road since Nok Air was the only airline servicing the airport commercially.

Hua Hin now has twice-daily bus service to Pattaya, starting Feb. 19. The bus leaves Hua Hin at 9am and 3pm, and departs from Pattaya at 8am and 4pm. Tickets are 473 THB.
