Hua Hin-Chiang Mai flights go daily May 4

Air Asia has announced a significant expansion of its flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. Travelers can look forward to daily flights from May 4 through June 14.

Flights will depart from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin at 10:20am and from Hua Hin to Chiang Mai at 12:20pm every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Continued …

Hua Hin love triangle tragedy: Millionaire and secretary’s deaths linked to affair

The police suspect that a love affair and jealousy may have been the motives behind the deaths of a millionaire and her secretary in a house located in the Hua Hin district of Prachuap Kiri Khan province. This suspicion arose after the secretary’s friend informed officers that the two individuals shared a relationship that extended beyond mere colleagues and friends.

The dead bodies of two Thai women were found in the bedroom of Suphatta Suwantanon’s residence in Hua Hin. Suphatta, aged 64 and a millionaire, had suffered a gunshot wound to her chest. Thai man survives black bear attack during ant egg hunt

A Thai man survived an attack by an Asian black bear while hunting for ant eggs within the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Isaan province of Buriram on the weekend.

The victim’s wife shared details of the incident on Sunday. She explained that her 60-year-old husband, Phumin Joysaku, entered the forest in the morning to search for ant eggs. The eggs and pupae of weaver ants are also known as Khai Mod Daeng in Thai. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices hit new high, breaking 37,000 baht mark

Gold prices continue to surge in Thailand, with the cost of gold ornaments breaking the 37,000 baht mark for the first time. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reported a significant increase compared to the previous day’s rate, where the selling price of gold ornaments reached 37,100 baht per baht-weight as of the latest update on March 11.

The domestic buying price for gold bars was set at 36,500 baht per baht-weight, with the selling price slightly higher at 36,600 baht. The price for gold ornaments was quoted at a buying rate of 35,838.24 baht and a selling rate of 37,100 baht. In the international market, the gold spot price stood at $2,180 per ounce. Continued …

Thailand is making plans to shift its trade focus away from China and toward India in the longer term. It comes as news emerged this week of contaminated fruit and vegetables being dumped on Thai markets from China. PM Budgeted 139 Million Baht To Fund World Tours

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been given a sum of 139 million baht in government funding at his disposal with which he may travel the world over for the current fiscal year, according to a government official.

Progress on 6 Thai FTAs now under negotiation

Thailand is negotiating 11 free trade agreements, including five related to upgrading existing FTAs, along with developing six new FTAs, as the kingdom aims to expand trade and investment with key trading partner countries near and distant.

According to information from the Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand appears to have successfully negotiated and implemented a total of 15 FTAs with trading partners from 18 countries or territories. Discounted domestic flights for Songkran announced

Extra flights scheduled for passenger convenience during Songkran

Sarun Benjanirat, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Office of Thailand (CAAT), has announced that 38 additional flights have been scheduled to transport passengers during the upcoming Songkran festival in response to the directive of Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit to implement short-term measures to counteract high airfare prices. Special promotions for airfares on all domestic routes will also be offered.

Health Ministry Sets Alcohol Sales Guidelines for Songkran

The Ministry of Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew chaired a meeting of the Alcohol Control Committee, approving guidelines for alcohol control during the 2024 Songkran Festival. The MRT’s Yellow Line, which connects Lat Phrao (a neighborhood popular with backpackers) to Samrong in eastern Bangkok, opened in June 2023, while the MRT’s Pink Line, connecting the riverside district of Nonthaburi to Bangkok’s Min Buri district, launched at the end of the year. Marijuana ban put on hold

The proposed legislation that would ban recreational cannabis use in Thailand has been delayed by the government to gather further public feedback, according to Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew.

Slow economic growth, lack of foreign investment are major challenges

Thailand’s biggest economic challenge is that its economy has been growing at a slower pace, about 3% per annum, than Malaysia and China, at about 5% annually, because it lacks the ability to attract foreign investors, according to Kobsak Pootrakool, executive vice president of the Bangkok Bank and a respected economist.

If the slow growth persists much longer, Thailand will lose the status of being the economic leader in the region, which would be a big problem, but not an economic crisis like the “tom yum kung” debacle in 1997, he said. Continued …

Consumer confidence up for sixth month in a row

Consumer confidence rose for a sixth consecutive month in January, reaching the highest level in 47 months since March 2020, propped up by the government’s stimulus measures to propel spending and reduce electricity and fuel prices.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) reported on Tuesday the consumer confidence index rose to 62.9 in January, up from 62.0 in December, 60.9 in November, 60.2 in October, 58.7 in September, 56.9 in August and 55.6 in July. Continued …

AOT sees soaring profits as global aviation industry thrives

Airports of Thailand (AOT) on Monday reported a profit of 4.56 billion baht in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 (October-December 2023), a jump of 1,231% compared to the same period last year, which saw 342.77 million baht of profit.

The airport authority said it had enjoyed significantly increased revenue from both its aviation and non-aviation businesses. According to Chenwit Musikarat, AOT’s executive vice president for accounting and finance, AOT’s total revenue from sales and services increased 78% year on year to 6.88 billion baht. Continued …

200 million passengers by 2031?

Chinese New Year Brings 13.3% More Tourists to Thailand

Sudawan Wangsuphakitkoson, minister of tourism and sports, revealed on Tuesday that Thailand has attracted a large number of tourists in the past week during the Chinese New Year festival (Feb. 5-11), particularly from East Asia and Southeast Asia, such as China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea, in comparison to the previous week.

This brings Thailand’s total number of foreign tourists to 872,235, up from 102,227 the previous week, or 13.28%, with an average of 124,605 foreign tourists visiting Thailand each day. Continued …

Elephant Tramples Owner to Death

A mother elephant trampled its owner to death by the roadside in Nakhon Sawan province. Initial speculation suggests that the owner may have attempted to separate the mother and her calf, resulting in the mother elephant becoming agitated and harming the owner.

Thailand said not in a big enough crisis to warrant huge loan for digital wallet

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has come up with an opinion on the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, questioning its transparency and necessity in the current economic climate.

The severe consequences of climate change could potentially be curbed in Thailand by the expansion of forest coverage on unused lands, asserted a water expert. Electricity and fuel prices are expected to increase next year

Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. PM rejects electricity tariff hike proposal

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin rejected the electricity tariff hike approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday, explaining that he was worried the increase would be too burdensome for consumers. Most of the general public are currently facing rising cost of living. Srettha added that the increase could hurt the government’s popularity in the next general election.

Pork prices sizzle down, fueling October’s inflation cool-off

A decline in pork prices significantly contributed to a reduction in the inflation rate in October, an anonymous figure within the Finance Ministry has revealed. Informal debtors owing Bt1.5 billion flood govt mediation service

Over 37,000 people owing a combined 1.5 billion baht applied for the government’s informal-debt resolution program in its first two days, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern revealed that 37,579 people had registered for debt mediation as of Saturday at 4pm. Of these, 36,338 registered online, while 1,241 visited Debt Relief Assistance Centers set up around the country. Cruise ship docks off Hua Hin

The luxury cruise ship MV Europa is docking today off Hua Hin near the Hua Hin fishing pier. Boats ferried passengers to the Hua Hin fishing pier for various different trips around Hua Hin. The ship carries 290 passengers, and after its one-day stay off Hua Hin will head to Laem Chabang. (HHT)

Why Thailand golf courses are appealing to Aussies again

After three years of government lockdowns, curfews and border closures, golf tourism in Southeast Asia has begun to recover. Thailand, in particular, is approaching pre-COVID levels of golf as international tourists return.

During a national three-month lockdown (March-May 2020), the seaside retreat of Hua Hin resembled a ghost town with a 9pm curfew. Hua Hin, three hours from the Thai capital, is now coming back to life as a golf destination. Ten fishing boats sunk by storm, three crew drowned

A violent storm sank 10 of 60 fishing boats that left ports in five coastal districts of Nakhon Si Thammarat on Sunday morning, and three crewmen were confirmed drowned.

Members of the new trilateral security pact AUKUS (Australia, UK, United States) are concerned that the building of a ship canal on the Isthmus of Kra would give China easy access to the Indian Ocean, a source said today.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has estimated that Songkran celebrations have seen about 18.5 billion baht in spending by revelers across the country.

For this year, the TAT estimates total revenues from tourism at about 2.38 trillion baht, including 1.5 trillion baht from as many as 30 million foreign arrivals and about 800 million baht from Thai tourists. Continued …

Covid-19 cases will probably rise after Songkran festival

Covid-19 infections are expected to increase two weeks after the Songkran festival, but the situation will remain under control, because hospitals have the capacity to take the extra patients, according to Associate Professor Dr. Nitipat Jiarakul, director of the Thoracic Society of Thailand.

He noted that during the pre-Songkran period the number of COVID-19 patients admitted for treatment at large hospitals had increased from March, but most of the patients had mild symptoms. Continued …

The Ministry of Public Health is modifying its Covid-19 vaccination strategy to handle the sudden increase in infections amplified by Songkran festivities.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) announced the change on Sunday in response to a surge in new Covid-19 cases last week. DDC Director-general Tares Krassanairawiwong said a total of 435 new inpatient Covid-19 cases were recorded, or about 62 cases per day, from last Sunday until Sunday, a 2.5-fold increase compared to the infection rate of the previous week. 8 victims injured during Songkran party shooting in Bangkok

Police arrested a gunman in connection with a shooting at a Songkran party in front of Onyx bar at the popular entertainment venue Royal City Avenue (RCA) in Bangkok. Four victims were injured by gunfire, while four others were hurt while trying to flee the scene.

Delay to 2024 confirmed for Hua Hin railway and new station construction

The double track rail line between Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan is set to be open by next year, a spokesperson for the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has said.

Over 100 lives lost, 1,000 injured in road accidents

According to the director general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Boontham Lertsukheekasem, 114 fatalities and 1,064 injuries were recorded due to road accidents nationwide during the Songkran holiday. Between Tuesday and Thursday, there were 1,055 traffic incidents leading to these casualties a report today revealed.

Chiang Mai, a province in the north, experienced the most accidents with 38 reported incidents. Bangkok saw the highest fatality rate with nine deaths. Chiang Mai, along with the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, had the highest count of injured individuals, with 40 each, according to Boontham. Continued …

Pathum Thani’s Klong Luang district held a two-day Songkran festival, but it wasn’t all fun and games. In an effort to promote safety and prevent violence, officials set up checkpoints around Khlong Sam Road to check for weapons and drunk drivers.

Sisaket Police Seize Over 200 Cars, Arrest 346 Drunk Drivers During Songkran

According to statistics released by the Sisaket Provincial Police, during the Songkran Festival a total of 1,470 people were arrested, 346 of whom were arrested for drunk driving.

Thousands for people descended on Hua Hin on Wednesday to celebrate the Songkran festival.

People took part in water splashing and partying across town in Soi 94, Soi Bintabaht and Soi 51 from mid-mid morning and well into the night.

74 deaths already during ‘Seven Deadly Days’ of Songkran Festival

The Thai government has issued a warning to drivers who are traveling during the Songkran Festival, urging them to be careful on the road. This warning comes after the Thailand Road Accidents Data Center for Road Safety Culture (ThaiRSC) reported 74 fatalities and 2,322 injuries on the first day of the “Seven Deadly Days” of the Songkran Festival. As of today, on day two, there have been 37 fatal injuries and 1,771 injuries reported.

Chotnarin Kerdsom, the Interior deputy permanent secretary, stated that speeding was the primary cause of “Seven Deadly Days” accidents (35%), followed by cutting in front of other vehicles (25%). Most accidents involved motorcycles (79%), and the majority of crashes occurred on main roads (87%), followed by highways (48%). Continued …

Elderly citizens being abandoned as population change grips Thailand

While family gatherings are common during the Songkran festival, many elderly Thais will be spending the holiday alone, just as they do for the rest of the year. At the age of 74, Buakaew is one of them.

“I am childless and now a widow,” the elderly woman said. “Although I raised a niece, she moved to another province three or four years ago.”

Her relatives have not completely abandoned her. Her niece has kept in contact. But Buakaew knows not to bother or burden her younger relative, as they no longer live under the same roof. Continued …

Late last year, news broke that Apple Inc. was planning to shift production from China to Thailand; it now appears that this move is becoming a reality.

According to a report, the multinational technology company based in California is currently in discussions with suppliers regarding the manufacturing of MacBooks in Thailand, as part of its strategy to expand manufacturing outside of China.

Sergeant major surrenders after allegedly hacking 55 million Thais’ data

The sergeant major accused of hacking the personal data of 55 million Thais surrendered to police this morning. The alleged hacker, Sgt. Maj. Khemarat Boonchuay, arrived at the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) this morning with his wife for questioning. Police said the suspect remained silent and did not respond to any questions.

Khemarat was suspended by the Royal Thai Army (RTA) on Friday for being absent without leave (AWOL) since April 3. The sergeant major was issued an arrest warrant for computer crime, leading to his suspension. Continued …

Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) will switch to 100% recycled plastic for its 550ml Pepsi bottles, expected to enter the market later this month, under the campaign “Appreciate Fizz: Dare to Change the World.”

Chiang Mai held a merit-making ceremony to celebrate its 727th anniversary. The event was held to pay respect to the founders: King Mangrai, King Ngam Mueang and King Ram Khamhaeng. The VIP bus service from Hua Hin to Suvarnabhumi Airport has a new Cha Am boarding location in front of Government Savings Bank. The one-way fare is 325 baht.

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has twice-daily bus service to Pattaya, starting Feb. 19. The bus leaves Hua Hin at 9am and 3pm, and departs from Pattaya at 8am and 4pm. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets
