The team leader, Raymond Leong, said he could hardly sleep because the voices of people screaming for help were still echoing in his mind.

Leong said the powerful currents made rescue operations extremely difficult, and his team managed to save only about 70 people. He confirmed they would immediately return to the flooded area to rescue those still waiting for help. Continued …

3 key future trends set to transform Thai healthcare

Thailand is currently facing a “crisis within a crisis,” with growing economic, social, environmental, and health challenges, particularly from demographic changes.

The rapid increase in the elderly population and the low birth rate — averaging just 400,000 births per year — are leading to a shrinking workforce, rising healthcare costs, and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which claim over 400,000 lives annually. This results in an economic loss of 1.6 trillion baht per year, making urgent health reforms necessary to tackle the forthcoming health crisis. Continued …

The Miss Universe beauty pageant was hit by fresh scandal days after it ended, with the Mexican co-owner of the contest accused of trafficking drugs and arms and his Thai counterpart accused of fraud.

Trump’s tariff sword hangs over Thai economy

The Thai economy is heading for a prolonged slowdown, with the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) forecasting growth of just 1.7% next year.

Growth in 2025 is estimated at 2%, but the third quarter has revealed signs of weakness with a year-on-year expansion of only 1.2%. Of greater concern is the 0.6% quarter-on-quarter contraction, the first quarterly decline in 11 quarters. Continued …

Thailand’s pork industry fears influx of cheap US imports

Stewed, seasoned with sugar and cloves, deep-fried, or dished up in a zingy chilli mince – the diets of most Thais are incomplete without pork. But a $3-billion market – supplied nearly entirely by domestic pig farmers – may be about to face competition like never before from the giant hog farms of the world’s third-largest producer, the United States.

While the fine print of the Thai government’s preliminary trade deal with the US is yet to be revealed, some details have emerged. Washington has a 10,000-item-long wish list of goods it wants to enter Thailand duty-free to reduce its $45.5-billion trade deficit with the Southeast Asian country. The list includes pork, corn, soya beans, and some fruits. Continued …

IMF projects Thailand’s GDP growth to reach 1.6% in 2026

Thailand’s economy is expected to grow by 2.1% this year but slow to 1.6% by 2026 due to mounting economic challenges, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Thailand’s economic growth is being influenced by a combination of global and domestic factors, including supply chain disruptions and a slowdown in key export markets. The tourism sector, a crucial driver of the Thai economy, is also facing uncertainties despite gradual recovery from the pandemic.

For Thailand, the IMF baseline expectation is weak growth around 1.6%–1.7% in 2026, unless tourism rebounds strongly and infrastructure projects accelerate. Policymakers will need to balance stimulus vs. debt sustainability, while addressing structural issues like household debt and competitiveness. Continued …

Thailand’s House Construction Market: How Leading Builders Navigate Rising Costs and Shifting Demand

Thailand’s house construction industry stands at a critical juncture as it enters 2026, with market dynamics revealing a stark bifurcation between robust public sector investment and persistent private residential weakness. Yet, within this challenging environment, strategic opportunities are emerging for builders who can adapt to evolving consumer preferences and geographical shifts.

The sector’s overall performance tells a story of contrasts. Total construction investment reached 340 billion baht in the first quarter of 2025, marking a substantial 16.7% year-on-year increase. Continued …

Repeated corruption in Thai stock market erodes trust as fraud cases shake investors

Corruption in Thai stocks has caused widespread damage to investor confidence, with delays in regulatory action worsening the crisis.

Tracking Thailand’s tigers

Deep in the evergreen jungle of Thailand’s Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex (DPKY-FC), a spring-loaded trap is waiting to catch a tiger. No one knows exactly when the animal will return to mark its scent again — in a week or two, maybe longer — so the trap must be checked three times a day.

Luckily for the big cat, this trap isn’t set by poachers: it’s the work of conservationists, trying to save the species. Thailand is a rare example of tiger recovery in Southeast Asia, but most of that has taken place in the country’s Western Forest Complex, where tiger populations more than tripled between 2007 and 2023. Bangkok Unveils F1 Street Race Plan for 2028

Key landmarks along the route feature Krungthep Aphiwat Central Terminal and Queen Sirikit Park. Continued …

Who profits? The risks and rewards of Thailand’s rare-earth MOU

While the deal was hailed as a development milestone by Thailand’s Department of Primary Industries and Mines (DPIM), numerous environmentalists warn it could add to the country’s existing pollution problems. How to keep Thailand’s EV boom going

The Thai automotive landscape is transitioning from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles due to a combination of factors, including government incentives, evolving consumer attitudes, and rapid advancements in EV technology and affordability.

Despite a significant decline in Thailand’s overall automotive sales – reaching levels not seen since 2009 due to factors like high household debt and stricter lending policies – the EV market continues its upward trajectory. Continued …

Bangkok Prison Probed for VIP Perks and Sex Workers for Inmates

An investigation is underway as the director of Bangkok Remand Prison (BRP) and several guards are accused of giving preferential treatment to Chinese inmates. Allegations include access to electric appliances and arranging visits from Chinese sex workers. Thai prisoners reported these practices, claiming that Chinese inmates had a more comfortable existence within the prison.

Complaints detailed that Chinese prisoners hired Thai inmates who could speak Chinese as servants. Allegations further included that the inmates paid for unauthorized access to items such as microwaves and air conditioners, and influenced prison staff to suit their needs. Accusations involved the arrangement of sex worker visits, with a hidden room beneath a staircase used for these purposes. Continued …

Four major risk signals for Thailand’s 2026 economy

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has released its latest economic assessment, highlighting four major risk signals that could weigh on Thailand’s economic performance in 2026. The council noted that the economy is likely to lose momentum, in line with an expected slowdown in exports after exceptionally high growth last year.

The outlook also reflects the global economic and trade slowdown amid rising US tariff measures, which are expected to continue limiting Thailand’s industrial production and private investment. Meanwhile, high levels of private-sector debt, combined with tighter financial conditions, remain a significant constraint on domestic demand. Continued …

A comprehensive review by Thansettakij and insights from government agencies reveal 45 trends in investment, exports, agriculture, consumer behavior, marketing, and tourism that are set to shape the country’s economic trajectory next year.

GDP expanded just 2.4% in the first three quarters of 2025, with full-year growth forecast at around 2%. For 2026, the IMF and the Bank of Thailand project growth of only 1.6%, citing structural weaknesses, geopolitical risks, US trade policy uncertainty, and high household debt. Continued …

Long-haul tourism to Thailand to hit 11.66 million in 2026

Thailand’s long-haul tourism market is entering a new period of robust growth, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) forecasting another record high in 2026, driven by stronger airline capacity, rising demand from Europe and the United States, and new traveler motivations shaped by the global “WhyCation” trend.

According to Chiravadee Khunsub, TAT deputy governor for international marketing – Europe, America, Middle East, and Africa, the long-haul segment has been one of the brightest engines of Thai tourism throughout 2025, helping offset sluggish recovery in short-haul Asian markets, particularly China and South Korea. Pattaya fractured by nationality clusters as segregated tourism drains city’s soul

Pattaya, long hailed as Thailand’s playground for all, is increasingly losing its charm, as tourists self-segregate into nationality-specific enclaves. Europeans dominate certain streets, Koreans stick to others, Indians and Russians claim their own corners, creating isolated pockets rather than a unified city experience.

Critics argue this fragmentation has stripped Pattaya of its eclectic energy. “The town used to feel alive because everyone mingled,” says a long-term visitor. “Now it’s like each nationality has built its own mini-city. It kills the authenticity and the excitement.” Continued …

Thailand’s green manufacturing at the sharp edge of geopolitics

Thailand is moving to align its low-carbon goals with geopolitical and industrial realities, as rising US–China trade frictions, critical mineral shortages, and the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism reshape manufacturing competitiveness.

While electric vehicle investment and clean-power plans show momentum, gaps in carbon pricing, small- and medium-sized enterprise readiness, and grid modernization threaten to slow progress, making decisive policy coordination essential if Thailand is to turn climate ambition into a strategic advantage. Miss Universe 2025 in Turmoil as Host Clashes with Owner

The 74th Miss Universe pageant, hosted in Thailand, has descended into chaos after a public feud erupted between local organizer Nawat Itsaragrisil and the global Miss Universe Organization (MUO). The dispute has led to police involvement, accusations of misconduct and a contestant walkout, overshadowing one of the world’s most prominent beauty pageants just three days after delegates arrived.

The conflict began when Nawat launched a “Special Dinner” campaign inviting fans to vote via “Likes” for contestants to dine with him and reigning Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig. MUO, co-owned by Raul Rocha Cantu, quickly denounced the event as unauthorized and accused Nawat of infringing on intellectual property rights. Nawat rejected the claims, insisting the activity had been pre-approved under his hosting contract and accusing MUO of misrepresentation. Continued …

Tracing ‘waste colonialism’ in Southeast Asia

For much of the last 50 years, high-income countries have consumed massive amounts of plastic and trash and given little thought to what would become of it. This was largely because it was out of sight, out of mind, as much of that trash ended up being shipped overseas, first to China, and then recently to Southeast Asia and other Global South countries.

But this model could be coming to an end as some of the top waste-importing countries in Southeast Asia have started to ban foreign waste imports this year. Thailand and Indonesia both announced they would stop importing plastic waste in January in an effort to combat toxic pollution. Malaysia prohibited the import of plastic scrap on July 1, Vietnam has announced that a ban on plastic waste imports will go into effect sometime this year. Continued …

5 things Western tourists do in developing countries without realizing how entitled they come across

I was staying in Thailand a few years back, and I watched a fellow Westerner at a local market haggling aggressively over what amounted to about 15 cents. The vendor, clearly uncomfortable, eventually gave in. The tourist walked away triumphant, completely oblivious to the fact that everyone around him was staring.

That’s when it hit me — how often do we travel to developing countries without realizing the impact of our behavior? During my time in Southeast Asia, I witnessed countless moments like this. How the Rural Doctors Movement started a healthcare revolution in Thailand

For Dr. Vichai Chokevivat, the harsh reality of healthcare in rural Thailand wasn’t something he studied; it was something he lived. As a young doctor, he witnessed families, already on the brink of poverty, forced to sell their land, or in some cases, even their children, just to pay for basic medical treatment.

“It was such a painful and bitter experience,” he says. “We dreamed of providing free medical care to the sick.” That dream, shared by many of his colleagues, didn’t take shape in boardrooms but in the remote, underserved corners of the country. Continued …

India, he added, is playing an increasingly interesting role on the global stage, so it is important to monitor how the subcontinent is positioning itself amid these ongoing trade wars and geopolitical conflicts. Like bamboo swaying in the wind

When a powerful country comes courting, a smaller country is wise not to reject the courtship out of hand, even if it isn’t fully swayed or convinced. The lesser of the two powers may appear to be an eager, willing and ready partner, but there may well be a measure of ambiguity behind the ready acquiescence and responsive smile.

Beijing has repeatedly urged Bangkok to inject some speed into a delay-ridden rail project designed to connect Thailand to China via Laos by high-speed train. As Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi put it to the Thais earlier this year, “The two sides should speed up the development of the China-Thailand Railway and push for an early realization of the China-Laos-Thailand connectivity development corridor”. Here’s How the Rich History pf Bangkok’s Canals Connects to the Forward-thinking City

Bangkok’s first boundary was described in water. When King Rama I established the capital in 1782, it was on an island his predecessor had made by cutting a canal across a peninsula in the Chao Phraya River. But when I drift through the city today, it’s easy for me to forget this defining relationship between land and water.

Easy to be lost among malls with names that signal their preeminence (Paragon, Centralworld) or their sparkle (Palladium, Platinum). But then, when I cross a bridge over the Saen Saep Canal, my attention is drawn to the brown water and the commuter boat passing beneath me. I imagine following the boat upriver, past stilt homes, open-air markets, and temples, before it enters another neighborhood: my childhood. Continued …

The biggest killer you never considered

Some of the world’s big challenges get a lot of attention. Climate change, war and immigration are constantly in the news and receive large funding from states and private philanthropies. Other significant problems like tuberculosis and nutrition receive less airtime and awareness but count among major global priorities, with funding allocated.

Even the aptly named “neglected tropical diseases” like rabies, river blindness and leprosy, which kill 200,000 people each year in poorer countries, have their own programs and attention in the World Health Organization. Continued …

Analysts see continued baht decline this year

The baht is likely to plunge to 37.25 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, as Asian currencies slumped to their weakest level since 2022 amid continued outflows from both the Thai stock and bond markets, attributed to ongoing global volatility pending U.S. interest rate cuts, say economists.

The Thai currency fell to 36.99 baht to the greenback on Thursday, the lowest in two months, from Wednesday’s close of 36.82. The yen slid past the key 160-per-dollar level to a 38-year low, while currencies in the region were largely subdued as the dollar strengthened overnight amid prospects that U.S. interest rates may stay higher for longer. Son’s search for his dad’s Thai girlfriend from 1968-1971 comes to an abrupt halt

A curious news story flared briefly this week in Thailand and online, linked with lost love. It was a poignant tale from both the United States and Thailand of an elderly U.S. serviceman and a Thai grandmother lamenting the loss of love from the heady Vietnam War era when American armed forces were stationed in Thailand.

The story came to an abrupt halt when the American son of the serviceman attacked the media. At the same time, the granddaughter of an elderly Thai woman confirmed that both love stories emerging at the same time were not an act of serendipity. Continued …

Thai Banks Are the Top Suppliers of Financial Services to Myanmar’s Military: UN Expert

Thai banks have become the main supplier of international financial services for Myanmar’s military government, enabling its purchases of goods and equipment used to carry out its increasingly bloody war against pro-democracy resistance forces and armed ethnic minority groups, a UN expert said in a report issued Wednesday.

The report by Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, tracks how that country’s ruling military council has been able to continue procuring arms by shifting suppliers of financial services and military hardware as previous sources have been blocked by sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and other states. At the forum, the central bank executives also reiterated that the current benchmark interest rate of 2.5% per annum was suitable for current economic conditions, despite the government’s repeated calls for a cut by at least 25 percentage points. Continued …

Could expanding foreigners’ property rights stimulate Thai economy?

Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, has proposed a policy allowing foreigners to lease land for up to 99 years and to own up to 75% of a condominium project as an economic stimulus measure. He has clarified that this policy would not equate to granting land ownership rights to foreigners.

However, critics contend that such a move could lead to increased land prices, potentially hindering Thai citizens from owning land. Continued …

Global foreign investment is falling

How does today’s climate of international chaos and uncertainty serve as a business barometer for foreign investment? These numbers from the UN’s latest World Investment Report 2024 underscore both a cautious recovery from the pandemic and, even more so, the results of international political discord, civil conflict, and investor nervousness. Continued …

A common ASEAN visa may be too ambitious to realise

In April, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin proposed a Schengen-like visa program with some of his ASEAN counterparts. Srettha’s plan envisages a single or common visa area for the mainland ASEAN states of Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. If the plan follows the EU model, short-stay visitors would, with a single application, have access to the six countries for up to 90 days.

The initiative seeks to boost tourist numbers beyond their pre-COVID levels. In 2023, tourist arrivals to ASEAN countries sat at roughly 70% of their pre-COVID level, with Thailand leading at just north of 28 million, still far shy of its 2019 peak of nearly 40 million. Continued …

Volcanic durian from southern Thailand creates year-long wait list

There’s a reason why Khao Lak is known as ‘Little Thailand’

The smell of coffee fills the warm, humid tropical air. Before a cave in the rainforest, some men have heated water in a bamboo tube over an open fire and then prepared a jet-black brew.
