Soi 80 gunman out on bail, bar closed

The accused in a fatal shooting of a sergeant in a local pub has been given bail by a Hua Hin court. The head of the Hua Hin Police Station’s Police Affairs Monitoring Committee confirmed that the suspect has been suspended to ensure a fair investigation and comfort the victim’s family.

The accused is 34-year-old Jagkrit, an adviser to the Hua Hin Police Affairs Monitoring Committee in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. He is accused of shooting and killing 31-year-old Sgt. Major Rochnaporn, also known as Sergeant Punch, a soldier from the Thanarat Camp in Pranburi. Continued …

Thailand offers a multiplicity of long-term visas for women and men well past the first bloom of youth. They include annual extensions of stay, the 5-20 years Elite visa and the 10-year long-term residence (LTR), each of which has its own scale of charges with assorted pluses and minuses.

None of them allows direct ownership of land by foreigners, nor guarantees a path to permanent residency or citizenship. Purchase of condominiums is allowed but does not generally result in visa concessions. Tobacco health warnings ‘mandatory’, with Bt5,000 fine

A new control measure on cigarette and tobacco sales takes effect today, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has announced, saying that violations carry a maximum fine of 5,000 baht.

According to DDC Director-general Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, the measure requires retail vendors and establishments selling cigarettes and tobacco to display a 7x21cm poster showing the harm smoking causes at sale points during all operating hours. Continued …

Painter Falls to His Death from 49th Floor of Bangkok High-Rise

Yesterday, police from Phra Khanong Police Station received a report of a fatal fall at a building in Soi Sukhumvit 64/2, Phra Khanong District, Bangkok. The victim, a 30-year-old painter from Laos, had been working on the exterior of a 49-story building under renovation.

Witnesses reported the victim had been rappeling down from the 49th floor to paint the building when an accident occurred. It is suspected that the safety equipment and rope securing him had shifted, causing him to fall to his death. – aseannow.com

The Suphalak cat breed has been recognized as an international breed by the World Cat Federation (WCF), according to WCF Thailand.

Thai Red Cross offers mpox vaccine for 8,500 baht per dose

The Thai Red Cross Society has initiated mpox (formerly monkeypox) vaccinations for the public, priced at 8,500 baht per dose, primarily targeting men who have sex with men and individuals with multiple sexual partners.

The Thai Red Cross has imported the vaccine, which reportedly reduces the severity of the disease by 68 to 80%. Upon verifying with the Thai Red Cross Society, it was confirmed that there is currently no direct mpox vaccine. However, a two-dose subcutaneous vaccination, spaced at least 28 days apart, shows an efficacy rate of 80% to 85% in preventing mpox. Continued …

An endangered tapir previously thought to be extinct was spotted in a forest in southern Thailand. Footage shows a rare Malayan tapir roaming in the undergrowth at the Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province on Aug. 18.

The Malayan tapir is distributed throughout the tropical lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra in Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Thai economy said ‘nearly in crisis’

Thailand’s economy is nearly in crisis due to declining exports and uncompetitive manufacturing, caretaker Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said today.

Exports accounts for 70% of the economy but the manufacturing sector cannot meet market demand, Pichai told a business seminar. “We can’t compete. We can’t adapt in time,” he said. Continued …

Thai economy has bottomed out; economists expect stabilization in 2025

Economists have come out to say that Thailand’s economy may have bottomed out and the outlook is a little more optimistic for the year ahead after the country’s economic growth was slightly better than expected, as announced by the National Economic & Social Development Council (NESDC).

The NESDC announced the Q2 2024 gross domestic product (GDP) for 2024 at 2.3%, bringing the 6-months to June 2024 GDP growth to 1.9%, and expectation that for 2024 the GDP growth could be around 2.5%. Continued …

No problems with cash distribution via digital wallet scheme

The Budget Bureau would have no objection if the government were to change the disbursement of the 10,000-baht financial benefit under the “digital wallet” scheme from “digital money” to cash, as long as the objective of the scheme is to stimulate the economy and the disbursement begins in September, Chalermphol Pensoot, the bureau’s director, said today.

He noted, however, that the government has not yet decided in what form the benefit will be. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has hinted that the digital wallet scheme will have to be reviewed, in line with changes in the economic situation. – thaipbs

Following the waste that’s choking the Chao Phraya

The Chao Phraya River is born from mountain streams in northern Thailand, flowing hundreds of kilometers south to the sea. By the time the river travels through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand, it is carrying huge quantities of plastic waste – an estimated 4,000 tons every year. The plastic clogs the river along its course, drastically impacting communities and the waterway’s ecology.

Govt to buy alien blackchin tilapia at 15 baht/kg to make fertilizer

Dengue infections in Thailand reach record 44,387 cases in first six months of 2024

The latest epidemiological surveillance report from Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DCD) has revealed an alarming surge in dengue fever cases in 2024. As of July 10, the number of reported cases has reached 44,387, representing a 1.06-fold increase from the same period in 2023.

African swine fever outbreak reported in Chiang Mai

In a significant and concerning development, Thailand has reported its first outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) for the year, as confirmed by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). This outbreak has occurred in Luang Nuea Village, located in the Doi Saket District of Chiang Mai Province.

A tragic incident occurred when a couple on a motorcycle collided with a wild elephant late at night, resulting in the husband’s death and the wife’s injury. The woman, still in shock, reported having no memory of the event.

At Monday’s meeting of the economic cabinet, PM Srettha Thavisin outlined strategies to address household debt and restore economic confidence. He proposed the Bank of Thailand reduce the minimum credit card repayment rate and said he was planning discussions with financial institutions to extend housing debt terms and find measures to solve the issue of repossessed vehicles. Acknowledging that debt resolution is complex, he emphasised the need for unconventional measures.

Energy authorities are planning to conduct a feasibility study on small nuclear power plant development in line with the revised power development plan (PDP), which promotes greater use of clean energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, says an Energy Ministry official.

This type of nuclear power technology is called “small modular reactor” (SMR), with a capacity of up to 300 megawatts per unit, about one-third of the generating capacity of larger, traditional nuclear power reactors, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Continued …

Relisting cannabis ‘will cause 27-billion-baht loss’

The government’s plan to put cannabis back on a list of illegal drugs will cause a 27-billion-baht loss to the local cannabis industry, said Wisan Potprasat, CEO of the Cannabis Medical Industrial Estate Assn. of Thailand.

Wisan, who is also the president of the Community Enterprise Network of Western Herbal Alliances, which is the largest licensed cannabis grower in the country, was commenting on the Public Health Ministry’s committee plan to relist cannabis as a narcotic. Continued …

Thailand Secures Live Broadcast of UEFA Euro 2024

Headline inflation up 1.54%, above forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.54% in May from a year earlier, after the previous month’s annual rise of 0.19%, the Commerce Ministry said today.

The May figure compared with a forecast increase of 1.19% in a Reuters poll and marked the first time since April 2023 that the headline inflation rate returned to the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%. Continued …

The Thai Condominium Assn. is calling on the Bank of Thailand to ease its loan-to-value (LTV) ratio measure when considering housing loans, as well as consider lowering interest rates to help revive the real-estate sector.

World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31, with ashtrays and fresh flowers used as a common symbol in marking the occasion. Thailand, however, doesn’t use any common blooms to mark this important day but rather a specific flower – leelawadee.

Leelawadee (plumeria or frangipani), a small flowering tree often grown as cosmopolitan ornamentals, has long been used by Thais as a symbol of quitting personal vices. Factory output unexpectedly rises for first time in 19 months

Thailand’s manufacturing production index unexpectedly rose 3.43% in April from a year earlier, increasing for the first time in 19 months, helped by higher exports and tourism, the Industry Ministry said on Thursday.

TC Subaru (Thailand) announced recently that all Subaru vehicles will be imported now that Tan Chong International (TCIL) and Subaru Corp. have decided to cease car-assembly operations in Thailand by year end.

300 baht landing fee ‘unlikely to be scrapped’

Thailand is unlikely to abandon the controversial tourist tax called “Kha Yeap Pan Din” (fee for stepping on Thai soil), also known as a “landing fee”, according to new Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanich.

Hua Hin takes ‘long term’ measures to improve water supply

Hua Hin is making strides to address the region’s water supply challenges amid a severe drought by enhancing its infrastructure. On Tuesday, Siraphan Kamonpramot, adviser to the mayor of Hua Hin, led the 12th Coordination, Monitoring, and Inspection Committee meeting to discuss the water supply crisis.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Atichat Chaisri detailed plans to install a new raw water pipeline to bolster the production of tap water. Exports down but manufacturers told not to worry

Thailand’s export value in March dropped to $24.96 billion, a decline of 10.9% year on year and the lowest in eight months. The contraction was also the largest in the region, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday.

China’s exports in March contracted by 7.5%, Malaysia’s were down by 6.1%, Indonesia’s by 4.2%, and Singapore’s by 3.4%, TNSC President Chaicharn Charoensuk reported. Taiwan and Vietnam, however, saw increased exports in March at 18.9% and 13%, respectively. Continued …

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Temperatures in the capital could reach 41°C today

The sun will be perpendicular to Bangkok today, with shadows exactly under their respective objects at 12.16pm due to this phenomenon, the Thai Meteorological Department said.

The department forecast a hot day with isolated thundershowers for Greater Bangkok on Friday, with maximum temperatures of 37 to 41°C. It advised people to avoid staying outdoors for extended periods to prevent heatstroke. Continued …

Heavy rain, storms forecast for mid-May as dry season nears end

Now that the dry season is drawing to a close, Thailand can expect to be hit by at least three storms by mid-May, the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) said.

Surasee Kittimonthon, ONWR secretary-general, said at a recent monitoring and assessment meeting on water situations that the dry season is expected to conclude by the end of April. The current water level across the country stands at 45,099 million cubic meters, approximately 55% of capacity and though it is 2% less than the same period last year, it is still satisfactory. Rise in Malaria Cases Spurs Action in Thailand, PKK affected

Thailand’s Tak province is seeing a surge in malaria cases, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC). Since January, 2,913 infections have been identified, largely among foreign residents accounting for 60% of the cases. Other regions affected include Mae Hong Son, Kanchana Buri, Ranong and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

DDC Chief, Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn confirmed a comprehensive strategy is underway to handle the increase, especially in the border provinces. Health officials are now on high alert to ensure early detection and prompt treatment to prevent further spread. Continued …

Anzac Day ceremonies held at Death Railway in Kanchanaburi

Anzac Day was marked on Thursday with special remembrance rites in Kanchanaburi, honoring soldiers who died building the Death Railway in slave-like conditions during World War II.

A private hospital in Samut Prakan has been fined 100,000 baht by the Emergency Medicine Committee (EMC) for refusing to treat a critically injured patient, who later died after being rushed to another hospital.

A defense volunteer was killed and five others were injured in a shooting, followed by an explosion, in Bannang Sata district of Thailand’s southern province of Yala today.

According to police reports, Mada-oh Waeyeegao, a defense volunteer, was shot by the pillion passenger of a motorcycle, as he was riding another motorcycle back to his home after attending a prayer at a masjid in his village in Bacho subdistrict. He died at the scene. Continued …

No wage hike on Labor Day

The government will not raise the minimum daily wage to 400 baht on Labor Day as previously announced. Instead, it will wait for the results of a tripartite committee on May 14.

Karom Polpornklang, deputy government spokesman, confirmed yesterday that the minimum wage increase will not take effect on May 1. Before the new wage kicks in, it first needs to be approved at the 22nd tripartite wage committee meeting scheduled for May 14, he said. Continued …

The Federation of Thai Tourism Associations has issued a warning to the Thai government alerting that the level of tourism has reached a critical point. According to forecasts, the number of foreign visitors in 2024 will be about 40 million, similar to the last pre-COVID year, 2019. This could strain both local environments and tourist experiences.

Phuket and Pattaya are the cities most affected, with 118 and 99 foreign visitors for every local resident, respectively, as per a study by MoneyTransfers. But this data is already several months old and the actual ratios could be even higher. Pump prices of diesel will increase by 50 satang a liter today morning amid rising concern about the cost of subsidizing the fuel, said Wisak Watanasap, director of the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO). The new price of diesel B7, B10 and B20 will be 30.44 baht per liter.

Premium diesel will cost 42.44 baht, according to announcements issued on Friday evening by the country’s two largest fuel retailers, PTT Oil and Retail Business and Bangchak Corp. Continued …

Spate of university deaths raises PM2.5 fears

The recent death of an academic in Chiang Mai from lung cancer has heightened concerns about PM2.5 pollution in the northern province, which has consistently ranked as one of the world’s most air-polluted areas.

Asst. Prof. Pichaarpa Pisutserani, a lecturer at Chiang Mai University’s (CMU) faculty of political science, said the academic is the most recent CMU lecturer to succumb to lung cancer. According to Pichaarpa, three other CMU lecturers have died from lung cancer since 2022. Continued …
