Seven killed as Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge collapses on Rama II Road

The under-construction Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge collapsed onto Rama II Road in Bangkok’s Chom Thong district at 1:48 am this morning. Initial reports confirm seven fatalities and many injuries. Authorities are searching for about 30 people believed to be trapped under the debris.

Officials said a concrete beam structure for the new bridge, which is under construction, collapsed onto the existing expressway bridge located about 200 meters from the toll booth. The new bridge is part of the Rama III – Dao Khanong Expressway project. Continued …

Thai Immigration Chief Orders Crackdown on Foreign Nationals in Mae Hong Son

The commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, Police Lt. Gen. Phanumas Bunyaluck, visited Mae Hong Son yesterday to implement stricter measures against foreign nationals causing disturbances. He ordered immediate deportation and blacklisting for those found violating Thai laws or engaging in inappropriate behavior.

Phanumas conducted an inspection at the Mae Hong Son Immigration Office, the focus of his visit being foreign nationals who may not be adhering to visa regulations or who have become a public nuisance. Continued …

European Parliament condemns Thailand’s human rights violations

The European Parliament on Thursday passed a resolution condemning Thailand for deporting Uyghurs to China. Members also urged the European Commission to leverage free trade agreement negotiations to pressure Thailand to reform its lese-majesty law, release political prisoners, and halt Uyghur deportations.

It will now adopt a joint resolution on democracy and human rights in Thailand, focusing on the lese-majesty law (Article 112) and the deportation of Uyghur refugees. Continued …

US hits Thai officials with visa sanctions over deportation of Uyghurs

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday announced sanctions against officials from Thailand, a U.S. ally, for their role in deporting at least 40 Uyghurs to China, where Washington says the members of the Muslim group will face persecution.

The U.S, is “committed to combating China’s efforts to pressure governments to forcibly return Uyghurs and other groups to China, where they are subject to torture and enforced disappearances,” the State Department said in a statement. Continued …

Dengue vaccination trial to begin

The Ministry of Public Health will launch a dengue vaccination trial in Nakhon Phanom province next month. If successful, the vaccine will be included in the universal healthcare scheme, says Minister Somsak Thepsutin.

Somsak said the National Communicable Disease Committee agreed to launch a study into dengue fever vaccinations in children, hoping it will help to decide whether the vaccine is worth investing in as part of universal healthcare benefits. Continued …

A roadside bomb attack injured nine police officers on teacher-protection duty in Mae Lan district of the southern border province of Pattani this morning.

An American influencer who outraged Australians by snatching a baby wombat from its apparently distressed mother flew out of the country yesterday, the government said.

In a now-deleted video posted to Instagram this week, the woman can be seen picking up and running with the hissing wild animal before declaring to the camera: “I caught a baby wombat.” Continued …

Thai stock exchange plunges to pandemic-era levels

After dropping 4.8% in January, the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index continued its decline in February, shedding another 8.4%. The trend remained this month, with the market now around 1,170 points, not far above its low for the year.

Thailand’s $505 Million Aluminum Exports Threatened by New US Tariffs

The U.S. has increased import tariffs on aluminum by 15%, effective March 12. The Thai Ministry of Commerce is compiling information for the U.S. Trade Policy Working Group to determine negotiation strategies.

The tariff increase will have a significant impact on Thai aluminum producers, as the U.S. is Thailand’s second largest export market and accounts for about 15% of Thailand’s total aluminum exports. Songkran Set to Boost Thai Economy Amid Challenges

The Songkran festival is projected to infuse 26.5 billion baht into Thailand’s economy. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), this year’s festival is expected to draw 476,000 international tourists, alongside 4.4 million domestic travelers, bolstering both local and national economies.

From April 1216, international tourism is set to inject approximately 7.3 billion baht, marking a 7% increase compared to last year. Get migrants work permits, employers told

The government is urging employers to obtain work permits for migrant workers who are registered but who lack proper documents by March 30, warning that failure to do so will result in the workers losing their legal status and facing deportation.

Employers must submit health certificates, health insurance proof, social security documents, and a 1,000-baht fee. If the deadline is missed, the workers will be classified as illegal and subject to fines from 5,000 to 50,000 baht. They will then be deported and banned from employment for two years. Continued …

Thai businesses most targeted in ASEAN for financial phishing

Thai businesses are facing a surge in financial phishing attacks, and cybercriminals are exploiting the region’s burgeoning digital economy, according to a report by global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

The company revealed that Thai enterprises were the most targeted in Southeast Asia, experiencing over 240,000 attempted attacks in the past year. Residential developers want urgent support

Residential developers want swift implementation of property measures, including cuts to transfer and mortgage fees and eased lending curbs, while calling on banks to reduce interest rates by 0.25%, the level of the policy rate reduction, instead of 0.05% to 0.10%.

Prasert Taedullayasatit, president of the Thai Condominium Assn., said the housing market slowed significantly in the first two months this year, as the reduction of transfer and mortgage fees to 0.01% for units priced 7 million baht or less expired at the end of last year. Continued …

Fierce competition and lack of confidence in the country’s safety will likely prevent Thailand achieving its target of 39 million foreign arrivals this year, according to the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA).

Foreign pilots face axe on Thai flights

Foreign pilots will not be allowed to fly domestic flights in Thailand next year if the aircraft shortage subsides, the Labor minister says, while the Thai Pilots Assn. has launched legal action to stop the practice.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the approval for foreign pilots is still on a temporary basis, with a duration of six months that can be extended for another six months. As the approval was announced in December 2024, the measure can be extended until the end of 2025. Continued …

Red tide threatens marine ecosystem in Gulf of Thailand

The Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center (Central Gulf of Thailand) is monitoring the red tide phenomenon, which could significantly impact the Gulf’s marine ecosystem.

This came after reports of red tide occurrences in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon from 2019 to 2024, and in Surat Thani from 2011 to 2024. New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Belgian tourist dies kite surfing in Pranburi

A Belgian man lost his life yesterday while kitesurfing off Pranburi’s coastline. The victim, identified as Mr. Brendan, 55, was swept onto rocks by powerful waves at Khao Kalok, located within the Thaokosa Forest Park in Pak Nam Pran, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Local police were alerted to the incident in the evening after the kitesurfer failed to return to shore. Emergency services, including rescue volunteers and forest park officials, responded swiftly, but the challenging weather conditions, including high tides and strong waves, made the rescue operation extremely hazardous. Transwoman robbed by teenager in Hua Hin

An 18-year-old man befriended and later robbed a transwoman, leaving her with nothing. The incident began when the transwoman met a young man named Ball online on Jan. 4, after he posted in an online Hua Hin community group seeking companions.

The transwoman, named Ice Cream, and her friends invited Ball to join them, learning he was alone in Hua Hin and staying at a hotel. The group spent time by the sea, with Ball generously buying snacks and showing kindness, earning their trust. Continued …

Thailand braces for cold snap with Bangkok at 16 degrees

The Thai Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) today issued a weather forecast indicating a further drop in temperatures across Thailand, with Bangkok experiencing lows of 16 degrees Celsius and strong winds. The upper northern and northeastern regions are expected to see cold to very cold weather.

The department advises residents in these regions to take health precautions due to the drop in temperature and to be wary of potential fire hazards due to dry and windy conditions. Huge waves, floods batter Surat Thani, including Koh Phangan

Strong waves and flooding due to higher sea levels wreaked havoc in coastal communities in seven districts of Surat Thani province yesterday. The affected districts were Tha Chana, Chaiya, Tha Chang, Kanchanadit, Don Sak, Muang and Koh Phangan, the popular holiday island.

Strong gusts of winds and three to four meter-high waves battered the coast at Moo 1 village in tambon Chonlakram of Don Sak district in the early morning, causing flooding and forcing 200 families to move their belongings to higher ground with the help of emergency rescuers. Continued …

Unsafe air detected in only 16 Thai provinces

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust were detected in 16 out of Thailand’s 77 provinces, mostly in the north and the northeast, while good air was recorded in many southern provinces, as well as Bangkok and Samut Prakan.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 10am yesterday that the unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) in the 16 provinces were at the orange level (starting to affect health). Continued …

Industry Ministry to propose 7-billion-baht sugarcane subsidy to reduce air pollution

The Industry Ministry is set to propose a subsidy program aimed at encouraging the purchase of all parts of sugarcane from farmers in an effort to reduce the burning of harvest leftovers, a key contributor to PM2.5 air pollution.

With a budget of 7 billion baht, the proposed scheme is designed to incentivize farmers to harvest and sell 100% of their sugarcane, eliminating the need to burn stumps and leaves before the next planting cycle, said Industry Minister Akanat Promphan on Friday. Continued …

American Man Saves Pattaya Woman in Bridge Rescue

A tense scene unfolded in Pattaya on the Saturday evening as a young woman attempted to jump from a pedestrian bridge, only to be rescued by an American bystander.

At approximately 5:30 pm rescue services and police in Pattaya responded to reports of a distressed individual attempting to leap from the pedestrian bridge near Sukhumvit Soi 53. Bomb near police station injures 6 rangers

Six paramilitary rangers were injured when a bomb exploded near Muang Pattani police station in Muang district on Monday morning. The bomb was detonated in an alley behind the TK Park Pattani learning center at 8.07am.

Bangkok ranks 34th most attractive city for investment

Bangkok was ranked the world’s 34th most attractive city for investment in 2024, up 11 spots from 45th in 2023, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said yesterday.

The southern dual-track route from Nakhon Pathom to Chumphon covering 421 kilometers was opened to passengers on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said.

No alcohol sales on Sunday

The sale of alcohol will be banned on Sunday to observe the end of Buddhist Lent. The ban begins at midnight Saturday and ends midnight Sunday. Alcohol sales are not allowed at restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels, convenience stores, and supermarkets, although you can still buy at duty-free shops in airports. Violators can be fined up to 10,000 baht, a maximum of six months in jail, or both.

Legal casinos and gambling in Thailand being weighed carefully

Thailand’s leaders are considering plans put forward last year for legalizing gambling and casinos in the Kingdom. In September, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin came out in favor of the move and has promised to bring the matter to cabinet.

By and large, public opinion is hostile to the prospect, as are many experts, given the history of gambling in the country and the social ills it creates. The 400-kilometer-long double-track railway linking Bangkok’s neighboring Nakhon Pathom province to Chumphon in the south will be ready for test runs in September.

The Mae Hong Son provincial administration is taking care of more than 9,000 Karenni people who have fled an intensifying bombing campaign targeting Karenni Army bases and villages in Myanmar’s Kayah State.

‘Health park” to open in Hin Lek Fai area

Hua Hin Health Park is set to open in the Hin Lek Fai area of Hua Hin. With completion expected in November, the site is located near the Hua Hin International School and Black Mountain Golf Course.

The park will offer a range of health, retail, and food and beverage options, including specialized facilities like the Spine Clinic and the Be Well Medical Center. The park will also include a pharmacy, deli, coffee shop, wine shop and other retail outlets.

Sam Roi Yat marsh boardwalk reopened

The boardwalk at Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, a one-kilometer-long wooden structure stretching over the Thung Sam Roi Yot freshwater marsh on the western side of the park, has been given a new lease of life. Heavy downpours forecast across 42 Thai provinces

The country has been warned of possible intense downpours today by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), affecting 42 major provinces across Thailand, including Bangkok. Residents are being cautioned of sudden flash floods.

At 5am today, the TMD forecasted a 24-hour weather change with the intrusion of monsoons from the north and northeast. Pheu Thai to install Srettha as prime minister with coalition pact with government parties

The Move Forward Party is on the verge of being given a sideways shift by its coalition partner, Pheu Thai, as the country grapples with a political crisis caused by opposition to the Move Forward Party from the unelected Senate and heightened tensions over the radical party’s insistence on pursuing its controversial policy to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code on lèse-majesté.

A report on gender equality and development shows that, despite significant progress in education equality, the disparity still exists. The literacy rate of Thailand’s adult females in 2022 was 92.4%, which was lower than most other ASEAN countries, according to The Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Myanmar military ramps up defenses opposite Mae Hong Son

Some 3,000 soldiers from the Myanmar military army arrived in Doi Sam Muang and Japasa Camp in Kayah State opposite Mae Hong Son’s Muang district on Thursday to reinforce the army’s positions.

The army has been holding these areas to fend off attacks by the Karenni Army (KA) and the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF), and has also prohibited some 400 local villagers from leaving the areas. New firms surge amid Thai recovery

New corporate registrations are expected to reach 83,000-90,000 this year, boosted by the increase in foreign tourists and the Thai economic recovery, outstripping an earlier projection of 75,000-78,000, according to the Commerce Ministry’s Business Development Department.

New government has room to spend 2 trillion baht on populist pledges

The upcoming government is expected to have around two trillion baht at its disposal for implementing its populist policies, according to an anonymous source from the Finance Ministry. Bangkok has highest turnout in voter history

The 2023 General Election witnessed the highest voter turnout in Bangkok’s history. According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), over 74% of eligible voters cast their ballots in the election yesterday.

Representatives from the BMA announced the unofficial election result from 6,360 polling stations in Bangkok in the early hours of this morning. Out of the 4,479,155 eligible voters, 3,339,664 exercised their right to vote, which accounted for 74.9% of the total voters. Government says household electricity charges will be eased

The government has offered an assurance that the electricity charge for households for May through August will be 4.77 baht per unit, instead of the 5.24 baht for the January-April period.

Responding to complaints from householders about the sharp increases in their electricity bills during the hot season, a spokesperson said that the Energy Regulatory Commission has set the fuel tariff (FT) at 98.27 satang/unit for household and non-household electricity, bringing the average electricity charge at 4.77 baht/unit for May through August. A giant panda on long-term loan from China died in a zoo in northern Thailand on Wednesday, six months before she was due to return home, officials from the Chiang Mai Zoo said.

Industry index keeps rising amid tourism recovery

The Thailand Industry Sentiment Index (TISI) continued to rise in March to 97.8 points, the highest in 10 months, thanks to the tourism recovery and farmers’ greater purchasing power, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Restaurants, real estate, and construction businesses saw an upswing in new registrations in the first quarter, pointing to Thailand’s steady economic recovery.

Bomb attack in southern Thailand injures 8 police officers

Eight police officers from Sai Buri Police Station in Pattani province, southern Thailand, were injured in a bomb attack while on patrol last night. Two police vehicles were damaged.

Before the incident, 11 officers went out on patrol in two pickup trucks in Sai Buri district. Assailants detonated a hidden bomb as the officers drove along the Ban Pa Thung–Bang Kao Road in Bang Khao subdistrict at 10:45pm. The assailants fled the scene. Continued …

Tourism fee to take effect in September

The tourism and sports minister has confirmed that collection of the 300-baht tourism fee will not be delayed beyond September, while the ministry plans to ask provincial police to support the tourism police in its operations to clear out “zero-dollar tours” and illegal tours.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the fee will not be canceled, although the collection method of adding it to airfares was criticized by airlines as selective, claiming it violated the International Air Transport Association’s Chicago convention that prioritizes equality. An American tourist drowned at the Viking Cave near Phi Phi Island in Krabi.

The Koh Phi Phi Police said they were notified of the incident on Tuesday (April 18th) when a 51-year-old American man drowned in front of the Viking Cave at a coral diving area near Phi Phi Lay in the Ao Nang sub-district, Mueang Krabi district. The Tao of island travel

After a two-hour ferry ride from Koh Samui, we landed on Koh Tao, where a tremendous influx of foreign and Thai tourists was arriving at Mae Haad Pier in the late afternoon. A crew of hotel guides were shouting their customers’ names from a nearby pavilion, while a fleet of four-wheel-drive pickup trucks were stationed outside to transport visitors to their lodgings.
