The History of the Loy Krathong Festival

Loy Krathong, meaning “floating basket,” is a Thai holiday in which people congregate along the kingdom’s waterways to release decorated floating relics.

On Saturday, Wang Nam Khiao police officers received a mass shooting report at a wedding ceremony in Wang Nam Khiao, Nakhon Ratchasima. There were five deaths in total reported, including the bride and groom.

One of Thailand’s top mental health hospitals has warned that lifestyle stress is behind a rise in the number of patients seeking treatment for depression.

Bangkok Mental Health Hospital (BMHH) said depression was the most common complaint among the estimated 1,000 patients it treated over the three months up to November. The Cabinet on Tuesday endorsed a bill amending the Civil and Commercial Code, so same-sex couples can marry and have the same legal protections and privileges as straight couples.

Bangkok battles rising air pollution as PM2.5 dust levels exceed safe standards

Air pollution in Bangkok has recently spiked, with 17 locations across the city registering levels of PM2.5 dust particles that exceed safe standards.

The most severe pollution was recorded at the intersection of Mahajai and Phet Kasem 81 in Nong Khaem district, where the PM2.5 level reached 47 micrograms per cubic meter today. Thai abbot disappears from temple with more than 4.7 million baht

A Thai abbot belonging to a temple in the central province of Suphan Buri has disappeared, taking with him a sum of 717,186 baht contributed by local donors and over 4 million baht borrowed from nearly 40 individuals in the temple’s vicinity.

The temple’s finance officer, Chalong Wongchan, filed a complaint with the Mueang Suphan Buri Police Station officers on monday. According to Chalong, the abbot left the temple saying that he would deposit the 717,186 baht donated by locals on Nov. 12 into the temple’s bank account. Continued …

Khao hang, or GABA rice, is a specialty of the northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon, as the method to maintain the grains’ nutritional benefits has been preserved for more than 200 years.

Israel’s Cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with the Hamas militant group that would bring a temporary halt to a devastating war that has stretched on for over six weeks. Under the deal, Hamas is to free 50 of the roughly 240 hostages it is holding in the Gaza Strip over a four-day period, the Israeli government said Wednesday. Meet the New Swedish Ambassador to Thailand

H.E. Anna Hammargren, was named the new Swedish ambassador to Thailand, on Oct. 23. Born in Solna, a prime settlement and municipality located just north of Stockholm, she spent all her childhood in nearby Sollentuna, also north of the capital.

In Sollentuna, Hammargren went to school and after finishing high school, she took a break from studying and decided – like many young Swedish women do – to spread her wings and go abroad. 20 Thai Hostages Reported Safe

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said todayyesterday that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had called to inform that 20 out of 23 Thais held hostage by Hamas fighters are safe, while a search is underway for two to three other captives.

Economy is in troubled waters, with fears for both exports and foreign tourism

Thailand’s economy is facing uncertainty on all fronts as the year draws to a close, with a decline in the projected GDP growth for 2023 to only 2.7% and possibly as low as 2.2% due to concerns not only about the country’s export industry but now also a more sluggish rebound in foreign tourism than predicted, with the Kingdom on target to generate only 61% of the level of income seen in 2019.

PM2.5 dust surge: Bangkok on alert

Bangkok is bracing for an imminent surge in PM2.5 dust pollution from today, with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) preparing strict measures to mitigate the environmental hazard.

The city’s Department of Education, under BMA’s directive, may consider a 15-day halt to school activities if dust pollution reaches a critical red level in two to five districts, according to Deputy Bangkok Gov. Chakkapan Phewngam. Continued …

Under-cooked pork alert: Hearing loss fever claims 24

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has issued a warning against consuming under-cooked or raw pork following an outbreak of Streptococcus suis, otherwise known as hearing loss fever. This outbreak has resulted in approximately 500 infections and 24 fatalities so far.

The announcement was made by Taweechai Wisanuyothin, the director of DDC Regional Office 9 in Nakhon Ratchasima. He revealed that the infection had spread among individuals who had eaten raw or under-cooked pork recently. A closer look at Thailand’s Bt1-trillion land bridge

The plan to build a “land bridge” from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea as a route for international trade was given the green light on Oct. 16. The megaproject will forge a new link between the Pacific and Indian oceans, relieving shipping congestion in the Malacca Straits, currently the main regional trade route for cargo.

A poll conducted by Matichon and Daily News, with over 42,848 votes, reflected the voices of the people from all regions of Thailand. The survey, conducted online from Oct. 1-31, reached people of all ages, occupations, education levels and income levels across the country. Thailand is expected to remain the second-largest digital economy in Southeast Asia in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV) from 2023 to 2030, according to data in the “eConomy SEA 2023” report.

Long boat racing returns to Kao Tao Nov 17-19

Khao Tao Reservoir will host the 16th edition of “Long Boat Racing for River Masters” between Nov. 17-19. Participants from all over Thailand are expected to compete across four boat categories.

The event will feature traditional Lao vessels, ancient long boats, Naga head long boats from Nan province, and iron long boats from Buriram.

This competition is organized by Hua Hin municipality, the Thai PBS television station and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth).

Long boat races on Pranburi River Nov. 26

A second longboat racing event will take place on Pranburi River on Nov. 26, following the longboat races on the Kao Tao Reservoir a week earlier. Teams from all over Thailand are expected to participate.

The government scheme to hand out 10,000 baht in digital money to Thais is expected to start in April or May next year, in line with the period in which the Fiscal 2024 Act will come into effect, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.
