Thailand warns of visa revocations over foreign tourist misconduct

Tourism in important economic areas such as Phuket province and Koh Samui is facing a new challenge. There have been reports that some groups of foreign tourists, particularly groups of Israeli tourists, behaved inappropriately and caused trouble and disruption after entering the areas.

The reported behavior has directly affected the tourism atmosphere, safety and the image of the local service sector, as efforts are made to elevate the areas into global destinations. Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said the behavior was a matter of individual conduct and that the ministry would neither ignore the issue nor allow it to spread or escalate. Leaked memo shows how U.S. aims to weaken global limits on plastic pollution

A confidential US diplomatic memo, circulated to a handful of countries in late July, formally committed the United States to blocking binding limits on plastic production and chemical additives at United Nations treaty negotiations — a position that peer-reviewed lifecycle modeling published in January shows is the single most important intervention for reducing a global disease burden currently costing more than $1.5 trillion a year.

The Washington Post published independently on the memo’s contents yesterday, the same day Reuters confirmed its language. According to both outlets, the memo obtained by Reuters — dated July 25, 2026 and written ahead of an informal heads-of-delegation meeting in Nairobi — states that the US “will not support impractical global approaches such as plastic production targets or bans and restrictions on plastic additives or plastic products.” Continued …

Two hours south of Hua Hin, and almost nobody gets off

By Michael Lauritzen

Most people who live in Hua Hin have made the drive south at some point. Pranburi, Sam Roi Yot, maybe as far as Prachuap for the day. Rather fewer keep going, and that is where it gets interesting.

Ban Krut is a village in the south of our own province, roughly two hours down the southern railway line from Hua Hin. It has its own station. Three trains a day stop there. That single fact explains most of what the place is like: it is on the map, it is easy to reach, and almost nobody gets off.

What is there is 12 kilometers of beach. Not a resort strip with a beach behind it, but an actual working coastline with a road along it, coconut groves behind, fishing boats at one end and very little else. There is no beach club. There is no bar street. In the evening, the loudest thing is usually somebody’s motorbike. Continued …

New bank regulatory plan may affect foreigners’ dealings with tougher, intrusive actions

Thailand’s biggest financial regulatory overhaul in 27 years threatens tougher, more intrusive banking for foreigners. The Bank of Thailandn is bringing digital payments and providers under tighter control. Banks must intensify checks on mule accounts, gray capital, foreign QR payments and unusual transfers.

Moreover, many customers initially face daily online transfer limits of 50,000 baht. However, overseas pensions, property purchases and cross-border business income could trigger automated controls. Foreign customers may then face blocked transfers, document demands and compulsory branch visits. Continued …

Koh Pha Ngan land action targets 112 companies in nominee crackdown

Surat Thani authorities are moving to revoke land rights held by 112 companies on Koh Pha Ngan after finding their foreign shareholdings exceeded limits set by law. Gov. Jumpot Wannachatsiri has instructed officials to take action against the landholdings, as part of an ongoing scrutiny of corporate ownership of land on the island.

The cases involve 124 land plots with a combined area of about 87 rai. While the announcement concerns companies rather than individual property owners, it is a reminder for foreign investors and expats using Thai companies to hold land that authorities are examining ownership structures on Koh Pha Ngan. 23,536 violent incidents, 7,790 deaths and 14,794 injuries

Thailand allocated 340.71 billion baht under its principal programs for addressing unrest in the southern border provinces over 23 fiscal years from 2004 to 2026, while separate statistics recorded 23,536 violent incidents, 7,790 deaths and 14,794 injuries between January 2004 and December 2025.

From manufacturing to AI, Thailand must reinvent its growth model

As Thailand prepares to host the 2026 IMF-World Bank annual meetings, it finds itself at an economic inflection point. As the second-largest economy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) after Indonesia, it remains one of the region’s most sophisticated manufacturing and service economies, with an established automotive industry and growing electronics and digital services. Yet, these advantages have not translated into stronger growth.

Although Thailand’s economy has expanded by an annual average of 3.2% over the past 25 years — a little faster than the global average of 3% — growth is expected to slow sharply to around 1.5% in 2026 and 2.1% in 2027. This slowdown reflects Thailand’s heavy dependence on imported energy and urea from the Middle East, as well as its heavy reliance on trade with China, leaving it vulnerable to disruptions caused by the Iran war, intensifying US-China competition, and growing fragmentation in global trade and supply chains. Continued …

Foreign investors show growing interest in Bangkok and Phuket condos

Data from CBRE Research showed that the downtown Bangkok condominium market recorded more new project launches in the first half of 2026 than in the same period a year earlier. Luxury and super-luxury developments were the main drivers, with both segments again attracting developers’ attention.

This trend contrasted with property market conditions in recent years, when economic pressure and weakening purchasing power weighed on the sector. The upper end of the market nevertheless demonstrated resilience, particularly projects in high-potential locations. Continued …

Thailand entry funds: what travelers may need to show

Foreigners arriving in Thailand may be asked by immigration to show they have enough money to support themselves during their stay. Depending on the entry route, the stated requirement is between 10,000 and 20,000 baht per person.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reiterated the rules in July, stressing that proof-of-funds checks are not new. They have formed part of immigration regulations since 1980, while the current thresholds were set in a Ministry of Interior announcement in 2000. Continued …

Growing old, staying rooted: Lives along Bangkok’s floating market

At Wat Nimmanoradee’s 100-year-old market, in Bangkok’s Phasi Charoen district, memories of life along the canals remain vivid among longtime residents, even as the landscape around them has continued to change.

For 73-year-old Orawan Wanasabodeekul, who has lived opposite Wat Nimmanoradee all her life, the canal was once a place to watch sunsets, stars and boats passing by. “I used to sit on the bridge with my legs dangling and watch the sunset,” she said. “Now the view is blocked by condominiums. Thai Well-Being 2 Ways: What Restorative Travel Looks Like in Bangkok Vs Koh Samui

“Oh, we’re on the wrong side of the road,” I blurted out as I hopped into our van after landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport. “It’s not the wrong side,” said Lisa, the journalist I was traveling with. “It’s a different side.”

I’d traveled from Los Angeles to Thailand to experience wellness in two places: Koh Samui and Bangkok. Thailand’s second-largest island, Koh Samui, is home to both luxury spa resorts and holistic retreats where therapists are trained in traditions that trace back to the island’s Buddhist temples. Bangkok, on the other hand, is a tangle of skyscrapers that feels like a dozen downtown LAs stacked together, where motorbikes, tuk-tuks, and trains cut through muggy air. Continued …

Inside Wat Phra Kaew Wang Na, a rare window into Bangkok’s royal past

Hidden within the grounds of the former Front Palace, Wat Bowon Sathan Sutthawat, widely known as Wat Phra Kaew Wang Na, is welcoming visitors into its ordination hall through Sept. 20. The special opening offers a rare opportunity to step beyond its exterior and explore a site where royal court history, Buddhist devotion and early Rattanakosin art converge.

Unlike most temples, Wat Bowon Sathan Sutthawat has no resident monks. Its location within the former Bowon Sathan Mongkhon Palace, or Front Palace, gives it an unusual status comparable in some respects to Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, within the Grand Palace. Reforming solar incentives can accelerate rooftop solar growth in Thailand

A new report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) finds that Thailand can accelerate rooftop solar deployment by reforming its current solar policies. This would reduce dependence on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), improve energy security, and limit future pressure on rising electricity costs.

Thailand’s power sector remains heavily reliant on natural gas, which accounts for 66% of electricity generation. As domestic gas production declines, the country has become increasingly dependent on LNG imports, increasing exposure to global fuel price volatility and supply disruptions. Continued …

Thailand or Vietnam: Retirement choices

Hua Hin CCTV installation details discussed

Hua Hin Municipality officials met this week to discuss the installation of CCTV systems with 100 cameras and equipment in high-risk areas or areas with security needs. The project has already been reviewed and approved in principle.

The committee decided to proceed according to the relevant procedures, prioritizing the setting of project details that are appropriate, transparent, cost-effective, and practical to use.

Fresh attacks on commercial shipping near two of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints have further weakened hopes of a swift end to the Iran war, with Tehran insisting that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until Washington accepts its conditions.

Where to start your Thailand trip, by region and season

Most guides treat Thailand like it has one climate and one obvious itinerary, but we both know it has neither. The country splits into six regions running on different seasonal calendars, and getting that wrong is the difference between a trip that flows and one spent waiting out rain on an island that was never going to be dry in October anyway.

The short version: pick fewer regions and stay longer in each, but this leaves way too much for interpretation. The Andaman coast and the Gulf coast run on opposite monsoon cycles, so “rainy season” depends entirely on where you are standing. Continued …

Climateflation drives up food prices and living costs

Climate change is becoming a direct inflationary force in the global economy, with extreme heat damaging crops, lifting food prices and feeding through to insurance, energy and healthcare costs. Known as “climateflation”, the phenomenon occurs when climate change and extreme weather push up prices and living costs by reducing agricultural output, disrupting supply chains and increasing production expenses.

Food is the most immediate transmission channel, but the pressure is spreading across household budgets and into central-bank decisions. What was once treated largely as a long-term sustainability risk is increasingly affecting current inflation, consumer spending and economic growth. Continued …

As US President Donald Trump’s “four to five week” war against Iran stretches toward the six-month mark, three American allies in the region ― including one armed with nuclear weapons ― announced a regional self-defense pact separate and apart from the United States, another apparent strategic loss for the nation.

Having already killed 18 U.S. service members and wounded hundreds more, depleted the military’s stocks of precision weapons and anti-missile interceptors, jacked up gasoline and diesel prices, slowed economic growth, and left Iran effectively in charge of the critical Strait of Hormuz, Trump’s war of choice now has led to an “attack-on-one-is-an-attack-on-all” alliance among Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan. Baht weakens 5% to rank third in Asia

The baht has weakened by about 5% since the beginning of the year, making it the third-biggest decliner among major Asian currencies. A broader measure of its value against Thailand’s trading partners, however, suggests the depreciation continues to support the competitiveness of Thai exports.

Kasikorn Research Center data showed the baht had fallen 4.9% through Aug. 5, behind only the Indonesian rupiah, which declined 6.9%, and the Indian rupee, down 5.5%. Continued …

Why ASEAN Must Rebuild for a Climate That Won’t Wait

When 35% of a year’s rainfall falls within a single week, as it did in parts of Thailand last year, the failure is not simply meteorological. It is a failure of design, of coordination, and — increasingly — of economics.

That was the argument advanced at a CAsean Forum 2026 panel on “Strengthening ASEAN’s Physical Resilience”, held in Bangkok on Friday, where engineers, a landscape architect and a Japanese development specialist made the case that Southeast Asia’s climate exposure is no longer a side issue for environment ministries but a direct threat to the region’s economic competitiveness. Mental-health problems and violence involving children and young people in Thailand became more severe and complex in 2025 and 2026, with surveys showing that 29% of young people felt lonely or isolated and more than half experienced stress over family relationships.
