Songkran brings 435-million-baht boost to PKK

The Songkran festival brought an economic boost to Prachuap Khiri Khan. This year’s tourism revenue soared to over 435 million baht, marking a 38% increase from the previous year, according to the latest data.

162 killed in Songkran road accidents so far

Songkran’s notorious “seven dangerous days” have, as of Sunday, seen 1,259 traffic accidents, with 162 people killed and 1,279 injured. On Sunday, 317 accidents were reported, with 38 fatalities and 311 injuries.

The assistant national police chief said on Monday that many people have started making their way back to Bangkok and other big cities, opening the door to more accidents and heavy traffic. As part of measures to ensure safety, he said, Traffic Police will coordinate with their provincial counterparts and intensify checks at all roadblocks, especially near event venues and at night. After months of delay, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced the official launch of the “digital wallet” scheme yesterday. The estimated 50 million Thai citizens aged 16 and older will be able to register in the third quarter of this year, with the 10,000 baht to be wired to their accounts in the fourth quarter.

Taking a dip in Hua Hin a long time ago

It is not often I can remember what I was doing five days ago let alone 55 years, but a moth-eaten diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. A brief explanation is necessary.

A few days earlier I had arrived in Thailand after an exhausting overland trip across Asia from London. With me in Bangkok was one of the traveling companions on that journey, fellow Brit Clarence Shettlesworth. Sporting a colorful shirt and shorts and carrying a water gun, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin joined locals and tourists in the resort town of Hua Hin in celebrating Songkran in Pone Kingpetch Park, at an event arranged by the Hua Hin municipality.

In his Facebook post, the prime minister wrote that he hailed a “Kapor” (a four-wheel public transport vehicle, slightly larger than a tuk-tuk) to the park to participate in the Songkran celebrations. Continued …

Selected wage hike to 400 baht takes effect in Hua Hin

This year’s second minimum wage hike to 400 baht/day took effect yesterday, while a 10% increase is state officials’ salaries will be implemented on May 1.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) today issued a severe weather warning for 36 provinces, forecasting thunderstorms, strong winds, and potential hailstorms across the regions. This alert comes amid a period of intense heat enveloping the country, with scorching temperatures and sporadic thunderstorms expected throughout the day.

As of 6am, today, the low-pressure system caused by the prevailing heat has covered upper Thailand, leading to sweltering conditions and the risk of sudden thunderstorms. Thailand Reports Total of 116 Deaths in Three Days of Songkran

A total of 936 road accidents, with 968 injuries and 116 deaths, were reported on Sunday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in three days (April 11-13) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 11-17).

The province with the total highest fatalities was Bangkok with 8 deaths. The total highest number of accidents were Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla with 39 each, and the highest number of injuries was in Songkhla with 45 injuries. Continued …

PM confirms digital wallet to be implemented in 4th quarter

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, along with his wife, visited the Hua Hin market in Prachuap Khiri Khan province on Sunday morning and confirmed that people would receive 10,000 baht under the digital wallet scheme in the fourth quarter of this year.

During his visit to the morning market, he asked merchants how their businesses were doing during the Songkran holidays. Most of them said things were improving this year. FTI defends participation of convenience stores in digital wallet scheme

The chief of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has urged the government to undertake immediate stimulus measures, as there was still time for the digital wallet scheme to be implemented.

Water disruption daily from 9:30am-3:30pm daily

Hua Hin’s mayor has confirmed that the water supply to large parts of Hua Hin will be suspended from yesterday ahead of the Songkran festival, which will still go ahead and which is due to get underway from today.

Hua Hin’s water management authorities have said there will be a temporary suspension of the water supply from the Khao Laeng water production plant. The suspension, aimed at reallocating water resources to meet the festival’s heightened demand, will affect significant portions of the city from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Continued …

Fuel tariff charge for May-August period to remain unchanged

The Energy Regulatory Commission has decided to freeze the fuel tariff (FT) for the May-August period at 39.72 satang/unit, which will keep the price of electricity at an average of 4.1805 baht/unit, excluding VAT, said ERC Secretary-General Komkrit Tantravanich today.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has issued an alert about the escalating risk of influenza and dengue fever this year, amid the persisting threat of Covid-19. The department’s recent communicable diseases report highlights the significance of these health risks.

Department spokesperson Dr. Jurai Wongsawat disclosed that the beginning of the year saw substantial clusters of influenza in schools, prisons, and military camps. Thai labor unions criticize new daily minimum wage

The Thai Labor Solidarity Confederation (TLSC) and State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation (SEWRC) expressed disapproval of the new daily minimum wage of 400 baht approved by the tripartite wage committee. The wage increase is only applicable to some areas in 10 provinces, initiating a wave of criticism from the labor unions, who argue that this decision is unjust.

According to the unions, this wage discrepancy among workers within the same province will generate inequalities. They argue that despite the cost of basic commodities and services remaining consistent across the provinces, the wage disparity will create an unfair system. High temperatures to linger until April

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) is warning the public, especially those living in the country’s northern regions, to brace for higher-than-average temperatures, which are expected at the end of the month and will last until early April.

According to the director of the TMD’s Meteorological Observation Division, Somkuan Tonjan, many parts of Thailand, especially the lower northeast, central and eastern regions, will see some rain between today and Thursday as a result of a prevailing southerly wind. Continued …

A tripartite committee is set to deliberate the proposed daily minimum wage rate for workers in 10 pilot provinces under a new policy, the labor minister said. Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said on Monday that the committee chaired by Labor Permanent Secretary Pairoj Chotikasatien will meet today to consider the new rates proposed by a subcommittee.

The subcommittee resolved on Friday to propose wage increases in 10 provinces, whose main revenue comes from tourism. The provinces are Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, Krabi, Songkhla, Phang Nga, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Rayong. Continued …

Meeting to set time frame for 10,000-baht digital wallet plan

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said the 10,000-baht economic stimulus should reach eligible Thais before year end, once a clear time frame is set by the digital wallet committee.

The minister said on Monday that he believes the committee will reach a final decision on the project’s details and set a time frame for completing key procedures when it convenes on April 10. Intensive negotiations are underway to secure the future of Thailand’s top construction firm Italian-Thai Development plc (ITD). At this time, the focus is on securing a financial lifeline for the firm to pay outstanding salaries by the end of April.

‘Strictly screen foreigners entering and leaving the Kingdom’

As Thailand’s tourism industry roars back to full speed, and attracting many new nationalities to the Land of Smiles, there has been a noticeable uptick in cases reported involving foreigners violating the law. Statistically, the rise has not been significant, but the reporting and social media frenzy over recent incidents is spurring the police and Thai immigration officials into a reactive stance.

Police now claim that some of the recent cases “pose significant threats to societal order”. So, Police Gen. Roy Ingpairoj, deputy chief of the Royal Thai Police, is taking decisive action. Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Chanthararuangthong said his ministry will seek a special visa for so-called digital nomads in a bid to woo foreign AI experts to work in Thailand.

Police chiefs suspended over alleged gambling links

The Prime Minister of Thailand suspended two top police chiefs of the Royal Thai Police (RTP) from their positions due to alleged internal conflict and connections to online gambling.

PM Srettha Thavisin yesterday transferred RTP Commissioner Torsak “Big Tor” Sukvimol and Deputy Commissioner Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, to temporary roles at the Prime Minister’s Office for 60 days. Police Gen. Kitrat Phanphet has been assigned as acting RTP commissioner. Continued …

With a budget proposal of 3.48 trillion baht (US$96.5 billion) for the fiscal year under discussion, the government of Thailand is determined to proceed with a significant 500-billion-baht (US$13.8 billion) digital wallet handout scheme, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the Energy Ministry to speed up measures to allow businesses to buy clean energy directly from generators such as solar farms, the government spokesman said on Wednesday.

What’s with the water bills?

For many in Hua Hin, the home delivery and payment of water bills is over. This week, water bill delivery drivers alerted customers that they needed to head on down to the Water Department office to pay.

Normally, that’s not a big deal, as there are usually only a few people there paying their bills. But with the change came long lines at the Water Department, meaning waits for as long as an hour.

This change does not seem like a budgetary one, as the bills still have to be delivered. And it certainly is not a customer-friendly move. So, what’s going on?

Here’s a clue. We remember last year a news mention that 7-Eleven stores were being asked to take on the bill-collecting task, as they currently do with electric bills. We never heard another word about the convenient option, but our guess is the “pay the bill at the office” mandate will be a short one. – Hua Hin Expat News

Hua Hin Hospital warns of poor air quality in region

Hua Hin Hospital has issued a warning to residents and visitors about deteriorating air quality in the Hua Hin district. The hospital shared concerning data about the current levels of air pollution.

Beverage committee rejects increased alcohol sales hours

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee on Thursday chose not to agree to increasing the selling period of alcoholic beverages from 2pm to 5pm.

Committee secretary Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, who also heads the Department of Disease Control, said the move would violate a coup-era decree going back to 1972. Oil fund deficit headed toward Bt100 billion amid high global price

The Oil Fuel Fund will see its accumulated deficit reach 100 billion baht by April due to high fuel prices and volatile geopolitical risks, an informed source at the Energy Ministry said on Thursday. The fund has been spent on subsidizing diesel prices – at 5.30 baht per liter at present, up by 0.73 baht from 4.57 baht per liter previously.

Satellite images show there are some 600 hotspots in Thailand, mostly on forested land, and more than 4,000 in Cambodia, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Agency (GISTDA) said.

Boat Carrying Chinese Tourists Capsizes, All Safely Rescued

A long-tail boat carrying seven Chinese tourists plus the vessel’s crew members capsized off Krabi yesterday, but fortunately all were safely rescued by a passing boat. The accident occurred near Koh Lao Lading island, around 300 meters from Koh Hong, with the two islands being part of Krabi’s Than Bok Khorani National Park.

Koh Samui Sees Increase in Visitors Following Visa Exemptions

Wiwat Chuenban, the chairman of the Surat Thani Provincial Tourism Industry Council, revealed an increasing number of foreign and Thai tourists visiting Koh Samui in January and February.

After a visa exemption for Chinese tourists, there were four direct flights from Chengdu, China, to Surat Thani in one week. There was also a direct flight route from Taiwan to Surat Thani, as well, resulting in a surging number of bookings of more than 672 hotels, and 25,000 rooms were reserved, according to Wiwat. 5,000 Chinese tourists a day on Phuket over Chinese New Year

Chinese tourists have descended on Phuket to celebrate Chinese New Year, pushing hotel occupancy on the island to 81%. Phuket has long been a popular destination for Chinese travelers due its strong Chinese heritage and ancestry.

The director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the number of Chinese arrivals has jumped to between 4,000 and 5,000 a day. Lertchai Wangtrakuldee says this is the highest number of arrivals of any nationality and the island expects to see revenue of 6.8 billion baht from the holiday period. Continued …

A 35-year-old Chinese man on vacation with his family in Pattaya for the Chinese New Year reportedly fell to his death from a condo in north Pattaya yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at approximately 2pm at a condo in central Pattaya whose name has been withheld pending further investigation.

The victim, identified by his family to the press and police as 35-year-old Yuanhui Lai, had reportedly fallen to his death from the balcony of a rented condo on the 18th floor of the condominium. Continued …

Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to increase after third runway is operational in July

The construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in time for its use in July, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said Sunday. Once the new runway is in use, the airport capacity will be increased from 67 flights per hour to 94 flights per hour, Suriya added.

The airport’s first runway is located on the west side of the airport and the second runway on the east side, separated by passenger terminal buildings and other facilities. The third runway is being built further away from the first runway near the east edge of the airport. Continued …
