High temperatures to linger until April

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) is warning the public, especially those living in the country’s northern regions, to brace for higher-than-average temperatures, which are expected at the end of the month and will last until early April.

According to the director of the TMD’s Meteorological Observation Division, Somkuan Tonjan, many parts of Thailand, especially the lower northeast, central and eastern regions, will see some rain between today and Thursday as a result of a prevailing southerly wind. Continued …

Prachuap Khiri Khan welcomes new provincial governor

Prachuap Khiri Khan Province has officially welcomed Somkid Chanthamrik as its new governor in a series of traditional ceremonies.

Chanthamrik’s appointment comes in the wake of a royal command issued on March 21, which saw the transfer and promotion of 10 senior-civil servants from the Ministry of Interior to high-level administrative roles. Continued …

The Consumers Council (TCC) has proposed a temporary reduction in power tariffs to alleviate the financial strain on Thai households during the summer’s peak demand. This request follows the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) suggested alterations to the current power rate, which critics argue would not result in cheaper electricity bills.

Thailand delivered its first batch of humanitarian aid to war-torn Myanmar on Monday, in what officials hope will be a continuing effort to ease the plight of millions of people displaced by fighting.

But critics charge that the aid will benefit only people in areas under the Myanmar military’s control, providing it with a propaganda boost, while leaving the vast majority of displaced people in contested areas without access to assistance. Continued …

PKK one of 10 pilot tourism provinces for wage hikes

A tripartite committee is set to deliberate the proposed daily minimum wage rate for workers in 10 pilot provinces under a new policy, the labor minister said. Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said on Monday that the committee chaired by Labor Permanent Secretary Pairoj Chotikasatien will meet today to consider the new rates proposed by a subcommittee.

The subcommittee resolved on Friday to propose wage increases in 10 provinces, whose main revenue comes from tourism. The provinces are Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, Krabi, Songkhla, Phang Nga, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Rayong. Continued …

Thailand’s medical hub dream shattered by lack of innovation

Thailand’s ambition to become a regional medical hub faces significant challenges, according to two Thai major pharmaceutical companies, who cite lack of innovation and a reliance on imports. Their comments came in response to the announcement that “CPHI South East Asia 2024”, ASEAN’s leading pharmaceutical event, will be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok from July 10 to 12.

Meeting to set time frame for 10,000-baht digital wallet plan

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said the 10,000-baht economic stimulus should reach eligible Thais before year end, once a clear time frame is set by the digital wallet committee.

The minister said on Monday that he believes the committee will reach a final decision on the project’s details and set a time frame for completing key procedures when it convenes on April 10. Italian-Thai behemoth fights for survival and to pay wages

Intensive negotiations are underway to secure the future of Thailand’s top construction firm Italian-Thai Development plc (ITD). At this time, the focus is on securing a financial lifeline for the firm to pay outstanding salaries by the end of April.

Free fertilizers for farmers proposed

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry will seek 33.53 billion baht to buy fertilizers for 4.68 million rice farmers suffering from poverty due to price volatility and rising costs.

Thailand’s customs-based exports rose 3.6% in February from a year earlier, the Commerce Ministry said today, below analysts’ expectations.

Chinese manufacturers fuel EV market, price wars coming

The local electric vehicle market will continue to grow rapidly, driven by more investment from Chinese EV makers in Thailand, causing manufacturers to cut prices to attract consumers, according to major car companies.

‘Strictly screen foreigners entering and leaving the Kingdom’

As Thailand’s tourism industry roars back to full speed, and attracting many new nationalities to the Land of Smiles, there has been a noticeable uptick in cases reported involving foreigners violating the law. Statistically, the rise has not been significant, but the reporting and social media frenzy over recent incidents is spurring the police and Thai immigration officials into a reactive stance.

Police now claim that some of the recent cases “pose significant threats to societal order”. So, Police Gen. Roy Ingpairoj, deputy chief of the Royal Thai Police, is taking decisive action. Thailand eyes special visas for digital nomads

Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Chanthararuangthong said his ministry will seek a special visa for so-called digital nomads in a bid to woo foreign AI experts to work in Thailand.

At the Krungthep Thurakij-hosted seminar on Monday, titled “AI Revolution 2024: Transforming Thailand’s Economy”, Prasert said the country requires some 100,000 experts for artificial intelligence-related jobs. However, he said, the country only has some 21,000 AI experts at present. Continued …
