Floods bring green water to Hua Hin

A plankton bloom has reached the shores of Cha-am and Hua Hin following major flooding, a marine scientist at Kasetsart University has warned, calling for urgent action to address the problem.

Assistant Professor Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a lecturer in marine science and deputy dean for special affairs at the university’s Faculty of Fisheries, said satellite images and oceanographic data had indicated that a bloom was moving toward the two towns along the western side of the inner Gulf of Thailand. He traveled to the area to observe it and found conditions worse than expected. Continued …

Thai DSI probes Chabad Thailand donations and firms

Thai authorities have launched a wide-ranging investigation into the Chabad Foundation of Thailand, examining annual donations said to run into hundreds of millions of baht, possible nominee company structures and land ownership.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI), working with more than 10 agencies, searched three main locations in Bangkok yesterday. Justice Minister Rutthapol Naowarat said four search warrants had been issued by the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road. Continued …

Five days of heavy rain put Thailand on alert

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued Warning No. 5 today, forecasting isolated heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Thailand during Oct. 9–13. Thundershowers, gusty winds and hail are also expected during the five-day period.

The TMD’s latest advisory places the eastern part of the northeast, the east and the south under warning for Oct. 9, with the affected areas changing over the following days. Continued …

Flood damage worse than expected

The expected impact of Thailand’s flooding on GDP varies significantly depending on the economic forecasts provided by different authorities. The Finance Ministry estimates the flooding will have a minimal impact of less than 0.1% on the overall economy, maintaining its growth forecast of 2%-2.5% for 2026.

However, the Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) provides a more severe assessment, suggesting a base-case economic loss of approximately 22.5 billion baht, which is equivalent to roughly 0.11% of the country’s GDP.

Additional economic insights suggest that the service sector is expected to bear a heavy burden, potentially accounting for 66.6% of total losses due to disruptions in tourism, transport, dining, and retail. Some analysts have warned that the impact could be even greater than initial estimates due to forecasted additional rainfall and the rising financial strain on affected households.

While the industrial sector has already faced significant damages — with some estimates reaching 6 billion baht — the Bank of Thailand continues to monitor the situation to assess how the duration and severity of the flooding will ultimately affect the nation’s economic stability. – Bangkok Post AI

What travelers need to know about navigating Thailand’s flood season

Thailand remains open to visitors, but persistent monsoon rains and regional flooding mean traveling requires extra thought. While major tourist infrastructure continues to function, staying informed and remaining flexible will help ensure your trip goes smoothly despite the unpredictable weather. Here is what you need to know about the current situation, along with practical guidelines for your trip.

Major international gateways, including Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, remain fully operational, though ground transport to and from terminals faces heavy gridlock and street waterlogging during intense downpours. Continued …

Aramco warns global oil buffer is running dangerously low

The global oil market is becoming increasingly vulnerable to supply shocks, as readily accessible inventories shrink following heavy withdrawals during conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, according to leading energy executives.

Amin Nasser, president and chief executive officer of Aramco, said global commercial oil inventories had fallen below 6 billion barrels, with only about 10% or less of that volume practically available to the market. Continued …

Brent crude rises 4.1% to $104.28 amid Middle East war and hurricane worries

Oil prices settled 4% higher yesterday in Houston as revived concerns over the ongoing Middle East war and growing supply disruptions from Hurricane Isaias approaching the US Gulf Coast drove intense market volatility.

Brent crude futures closed up $4.08, or 4.1%, at $104.28 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 3.6%, or $3.21, to $91.49. At one point during the session, both contracts gained more than $5 a barrel, with Brent touching its highest level since Sept. 29 amid worries over potential US strikes on Iran. Continued …

Meta bans TikTok advertising on Facebook and Instagram in Thailand

Meta has banned advertisements from TikTok owner ByteDance on Facebook and Instagram in Thailand, the United States and five other markets, escalating competition between the two social-media groups.

The restriction took effect immediately in Thailand, the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam, Meta said yesterday. It also covers advertisements placed by third parties that direct users to TikTok or other ByteDance-owned services in those countries. Continued …

Thailand Must Revamp Strategy to Escape Growth Trap, Says Kasikornbank CEO

Thailand must operate like a disciplined, highly trained football team — with businesses attacking on the front line, banks steering the midfield, and the government securing the defense — if it is to break out of its long-standing middle-income trap, according to Kasikornbank Chief Executive Officer Kattiya Indaravijaya.

Speaking at the Thailand Economic Outlook 2027 conference during a session titled Strategic Opportunities and Challenges in the New Economy, Kattiya warned that rapid global disruptions mean Thailand can no longer afford business as usual. Continued …

Thai Business Leaders Warned to Overhaul Operating Models or Risk Extinction

Thai enterprises face an urgent, structural choice: overhaul their underlying business models and portfolio strategies or face diminishing competitiveness on the global stage. That was the core consensus delivered by top executives from two of the world’s leading professional services networks, Deloitte and PwC, speaking at the Thailand Economic Outlook 2027: New Horizon Beyond the Trap conference.

While approaching the challenge from distinct operational perspectives — Deloitte focusing on organisational redesign and cost efficiency, and PwC emphasizing supply chain resilience and dealmaking capital allocation — both firms converged on a single macro assessment: the era of brief economic crises followed by a return to “normal” is over. Thai consumer confidence index falls to 52.1 in September

Thailand’s consumer confidence fell for the first time in four months in September, with the index dropping to 52.1 as widespread flooding and rising living costs weighed on households. The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) released the findings yesterday, drawing on a nationwide survey of 2,241 respondents.

Thanavath Phonvichai, UTCC president and chief adviser to its Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, attributed the decline mainly to flooding and diesel prices exceeding 40 baht per liter. Thanavath described the setback as temporary, while UTCC maintained its economic growth forecast for 2026 at 2.2%–2.5%. Continued …

Thailand identifies 10 emerging technologies for future growth

The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) has identified 10 emerging technologies that could create new business opportunities, reduce production costs and strengthen Thailand’s competitiveness as industries respond to technological advances and the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Prof. Sukit Limpijumnong, president of NSTDA, outlined the technologies to watch in 2026–27, covering five broad areas: artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies, agriculture and the environment, healthcare and medicine, advanced manufacturing, and energy. Continued …

Foreign visitors could face 2,570 baht in Thailand travel fees

Thailand is moving toward two additional charges on air travel alongside the 1,120-baht international passenger service charge already collected by Airports of Thailand (AOT), potentially bringing the combined cost to 2,570 baht for eligible foreign travelers subject to all three charges.

The three measures are at different stages. The higher passenger service charge (PSC) is already in effect, while a 450-baht foreign tourist fee and a 1,000-baht departure tax remain proposals. Continued …

Travel agents oppose 1,000-baht levy

The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) has opposed a proposed 1,000-baht levy on all outbound passengers, arguing that it would increase the total tax and fee burden for foreign tourists to 2,570 baht per trip. The association has submitted a petition to the finance minister to reconsider the scheme, warning that the additional costs could harm international travel and negatively impact various objectives, such as employment and investment.

ATTA leadership expressed concern that the levy could decrease travel demand and overall visitor numbers, potentially undermining Thailand’s two-way tourism principle. Furthermore, small business operators, students, and families could be particularly affected by the higher costs, and the association noted that the measure could hinder the recovery of small businesses currently struggling with post-pandemic recovery. – Bangkok Post AI

Bangkok voted world’s best city for tourists

Thailand’s capital Bangkok has been named the world’s best city in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards by British travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller. Bangkok was absent from the top 20 of last year’s ranking where Valletta, Malta’s capital, took the No. 1 spot.

“There’s no denying the Thai capital is one of the world’s most exhilarating cities, where buzzy markets, glittering palaces and captivating religious sites unite – street food sellers dishing up tasty food between them. Continued …

Local flavors take center stage at 2026 IMF-World Bank meetings

Thai gastronomy is set to act as a key cultural ambassador at the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group annual meetings, with Executive Chef Songpol Kittikhunwatchana and his team at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) crafting a menu that highlights sustainable, locally sourced ingredients from across the country.

Data Center Boom Puts Sustainability Goals to the Test

ASEAN’s Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), finalized on May 30, represents a landmark achievement as the world’s first regional digital economy agreement. It establishes common rules for cross-border data transfers, e-commerce, cybersecurity, AI, and talent mobility, targeting a projected $1 trillion digital economy by 2030.

However, this ambition exists alongside ASEAN’s equally ambitious sustainability commitments, including the ASCC Blueprint 2025. These goals are increasingly in tension, particularly regarding data centers, which may consume 30% of Malaysia’s national power by 2030 and significantly raise regional carbon emissions.
