Centara’s Hua Hin properties to add 70 villas, 200 rooms

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, the world-renowned heritage resort, will undertake a phased and extensive renovation that will preserve and celebrate the historical and colonial charm of the property, while significantly upgrading all accommodations, public spaces and facilities.

The refurbishment program will also see the creation of a new collection of 70 exclusive villas, which will fall under The Centara Collection. How Often Do Thais Use E-hailing In A Week

E-hailing services are becoming increasingly popular among Thais, with more people relying on them for daily commutes and errands. As urban mobility evolves, Maxim’s analytics team examined user habits in 2024, revealing key insights into ride frequency, preferred services, and spending patterns.

According to the data, 49% of active users book rides twice a week, while 39% use the service once a week. Meanwhile, 10% book between three to six rides weekly, and a small but dedicated 1% use Maxim more than seven times a week. Most rides originate from public spaces, transportation hubs, and workplaces, heading toward residential areas. Regular users often commute across various parts of the city.

Among service options, the car service is used for 53% of rides, making it the most popular. Motorbikes make up 41% of trips because their speed and flexibility make them suited for short journeys in cities. While the remaining 5% consists of other services.

According to the data, 59% spend up to Bt50 per week, 36% spend up to Bt250, and only 13% exceed that amount. On average, users spend approximately Bt108 per week.

Renewed Calls to Phase Out Double-Decker Buses After Fatal Prachin Buri Crash

A fresh push to discontinue double-decker buses has emerged following a series of serious road crashes, including a devastating crash in Prachin Buri earlier this week that claimed 19 lives and injured 32 others. An Italian holidaymaker hurled a tirade of abuse at police who dragged him out of the ocean after he was caught snorkeling in protected waters. The tourist and his wife were paddling in a coral conservation zone off the coast of Krabi, southern Thailand when they were stopped by marine police.

Thai economy improved in January, says central bank

Thailand’s economy in January improved from the previous month, driven by tourism and consumption, the central bank reported yesterday. Government measures such as a week-long public transport fare exemption and consumer tax campaign increased consumption, it said, with auto production showing signs of improvement.

Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy recorded a current account surplus of US$2.7 billion in January, with exports rising 12.9% from the same period last year, the Bank of Thailand (BoT) said, and that imports also rose 7.5% on a yearly basis. Continued …

Thai border trade sees steady growth, riding China export surge

Thailand’s border and transit trade grew by 2.7% in January, amounting to total trade of 145.140 billion baht. New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Smog again covers much of Thailand, PKK at orange level

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust blanketed 48 out of the 76 Thai provinces, and Bangkok, today, with red levels in parts of the central plain and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported.

Forty-one provinces were shrouded with orange levels (starting to affect health) of PM2.5 ranging from 38.6 to 73.3µg/m³. They included Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Samut Prakan. Continued …

Regional deal signed to combat PM2.5 pollution

Thailand has signed an agreement with the entire membership of ASEAN to jointly deal with PM2.5, which is considered to be a transboundary haze. The harmful levels of PM2.5, from domestic and overseas sources, can affect the image of Thailand as an investment destination in Southeast Asia, according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

Operator of plastic waste warehouse that caught fire ‘violated industrial laws’

The operator of Teng Fa Plastic and Metal warehouse in Ban Paew district of Samut Sakhon province, which was engulfed in flames on Wednesday, was allegedly in violation of industrial laws, the Provincial Industry Office said.

A fire broke out at a large pile of recyclable plastic and rubber waste at the 13-rai (2.08 hectares) garbage warehouse compound, destroying two warehouses there. Researchers in Thailand are exploring the science behind herbal compresses

The scent of fragrant lemongrass mingles with earthy ginger and tangy tamarind, punctuated by the sharp, menthol-like aroma of camphor. It’s a familiar smell for spa-goers: a traditional Thai herbal compress. The treatment combines herbs in a cotton cloth, which is wrapped into a compact ball and steamed for around 10 minutes before the practitioner applies it to the body, typically after a massage.

Herbal compresses have been used for centuries for muscle aches, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation. However, it’s unclear how much benefit comes from the herbs: a 2015 review paper highlighted that the effects were mainly associated with heat, which increases blood flow and reduces pain. Thailand’s automotive sector continues to face significant economic and financial headwinds as of the third quarter of 2024. According to data provided by the Asean Automotive Federation, total vehicle sales declined by 25.3% year-on-year as of September 2024 to tally 438,303 units.

Vehicle production followed the downward trend in sales, declining by 18.6% year-on-year over the same period to total 1.13 million units. Thailand’s agricultural sector chalked up a trade surplus of over 900 million baht in the first 10 months of the year, driven by strong export performance, a senior official of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) said on Thursday.

Total agricultural trade value climbed to 2.15 trillion baht between January and October, representing a 6.49% increase compared to the same period in 2023, office Secretary-general Chantanon Wannakejohn, said. Public Bus Accidents in Thailand Surge by 46.5%

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has revealed a sharp 46.5% increase in accidents involving public buses in 2023. Buses accounted for the highest proportion of these incidents, with 73.0% of cases, driven by driver errors and poorly maintained, aging vehicles. Additionally, unsafe vehicle modifications have exacerbated the risk.

Public transport remains essential, particularly in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, where over 968 million trips were recorded in 2022. However, a troubling rise in fatalities and injuries was reported, with casualties from public bus accidents increasing by more than 105% compared to 2022. Continued …

Power tariff to be capped until next April

In an extension of the government’s current policy, Thailand’s energy minister plans to cap the power tariff until April next year. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Monday that the policy was to keep the average power tariff at no more than 4.18 baht per unit.

Unemployment rises by 1.02% in third quarter

Thailand’s unemployment rate in the third quarter this year stood at 1.02%, increasing from 0.99% recorded for the same period in 2023, with about 410,000 Thais unemployed, a 3.2% increase year on year, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its report on Thai society’s outlook for Q3/2024.

Thailand’s household debt falls for the first time in 42 months

Thailand’s household debt dropped in the second quarter of this year to 89.6% of GDP, from 90.7% in the first quarter, which is the first fall in three and a half years, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), today.

Although the decrease is a healthy sign, he noted that household debt in Thailand is still higher than in other countries in the region, but added that if the rate of economic growth can be maintained, household debt is likely to improve accordingly. Continued …

Thailand’s customs-cleared exports rose 14.6% in October from a year earlier, the commerce ministry said today, beating analysts’ expectations. The reading compared with a forecast 5.2% increase for October in a Reuters poll, and followed September’s 1.1% rise.

Exports totaled $27.22 billion, while imports amounted to $28.02 billion, the latter up 15.9% from a year earlier, the ministry said. Thai baht falls on political uncertainties, Asian FX declines

The Thai baht hit a one-week low on Thursday on lingering political uncertainties after the populist Pheu Thai party took the lead in efforts to form a government, while other emerging Asian currencies fell against a firm U.S. dollar. The baht weakened 0.6% and equities in Bangkok shed 0.5%, a day after the Bank of Thailand raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points.

Southeast Asia’s second largest economy has been in political limbo since the May 14 election, and the latest twist came as the Pheu Thai party abandoned support for the reformist Move Forward party that had won most seats but twice failed to get parliament’s approval for its prime ministerial candidate. Heavy rain forecast for 43 provinces

The southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, most of the country, as well as the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure system over the upper coast of Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin, will continue to bring heavy to very heavy rain to 43 provinces,mainly in the north, northeast and eastern regions.

EGAT against further power bill cut

Debt-ridden Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) cannot yield to any further requests for cheaper electricity bills in the next four-month cycle, as this would affect its future investment in the power infrastructure.

A pickup truck collided with a train in the early hours of this morning, killing eight Thai people and injuring three others near Klong Udon Chonlajon in Chachoengsao province near Bangkok.

Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station officers and a rescue team promptly rushed to the scene at approximately 3am today. They found a train, laden with containers, positioned on the railway tracks.
