Summer begins in Thailand at end of February, with hottest spell in March

Thailand will officially enter the summer season at the end of February and it would last until May, the Thailand Meteorological Department said today.

In a bid to tackle online scams using mobile phones, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has suspended the services of more than 13,000 SIM cards used to make over 100 calls per day.

More fuel subsidies ready to launch

Energy authorities are planning more subsidies for gasohol prices by using money from the state Oil Fuel Fund after the ongoing subsidy program ends on Jan. 31.

The government has since November last year reduced the prices of gasoline and gasohol, a mix of gasoline and ethanol, by between 0.8 and 2.5 baht a liter, depending on oil types, to ease the burden on motorists. Continued …

A total of 85,300 companies registered as new businesses in 2023, the highest number in a decade, with combined registered capital of over 560 billion baht, the Department of Business Development said.

Tourist Speedboat Collides with Reef, 12 Tourists and 3 Crewmates Rescued

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday reinstated Pita Limjaroenrat as Move Forward Party MP after it ruled that iTV Plc had not been a media firm since March 7, 2007.

The office of the Constitutional Court announced that the majority of judges had dismissed the request of the Election Commission to disqualify Pita as an MP under Article 101 of the Constitution for holding shares in a media firm. Two baby leopard cats rescued in Phichit province

Thanawat “Shane” Promwen, 8 years old, started his adventure across the Gulf of Thailand this morning, embarking on a journey of 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Pattaya to Pak Nam Pran, in the Hua Hin area, setting the record for being the youngest child ever to achieve this goal. by crossing with kite foil.

Shane has been making waves in the kite and wing foilling world since the age of 3, and his latest adventure marks a big step forward. In preparation for international competition in 2024. At present, he is too young to compete and has to rely on special invitations to participate in adult competitions.

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) predicted rainfall for the next 10 days, from Jan. 22-31. The TMD anticipates thunderstorms in the northern, central and upper northeastern regions, with a temperature rise expected.

COVID-19 hospital admissions increase 12.9% during the past week

Among the 11 soft powers being promoted, food is one industry that the committee hopes to highlight as a cultural export to help strengthen the economy as a whole. Unsafe dust levels in 51 provinces

Fifty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with hazardous levels of ultra-fine dust on Monday morning, most of them in the central plains, the north and the northeast.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said five central plains provinces were blanketed by red (seriously hazardous) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Continued …

Public advised to use N95 mask as PM2.5 in Bangkok at unsafe levels

The public has been advised to wear N95 masks whenever they go outside on Sunday as air pollution in Bangkok remains high, with PM2.5 levels reaching unhealthy levels.

As of 10am on Sunday, the air quality index (AQI) in Bangkok was 187, which is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”. The AQI for PM2.5, which are fine particulates that can penetrate deep into the lungs, is 118. Continued …

PM to submit dust control plan to court

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday that he will submit a plan to solve the PM2.5 fine dust problem as ordered by the Chiang Mai Administrative Court within 90 days.

He said the court requires him and the national environment panel to draft a plan in 90 days following a complaint filed by a network of people in the north. Officials will be invited to discuss the matter and draft the plan as ordered by the court, he said. Continued …

A new blast of cold air is set to lower temperatures by four degrees Celsius, warns the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD). This weather shift, prompted by a strong high-pressure system from southern China and northern Vietnam, is anticipated to affect the northeastern and eastern parts of Thailand today.

The cold weather and strong winds in the northeast are expected to result in a drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius, while the eastern region will experience a 1-3 degrees Celsius decrease. Thailand produces 9.7 million tons of food waste per year, or 146 kilograms for each resident, says Pollution Control Department Director-general Preeyaporn Suwanaged.

Court orders government to form urgent plan to address PM2.5

The Administrative Court in Chiang Mai yesterday ordered Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the National Environment Board to draw up an emergency plan within 90 days to deal with the PM2.5 pollution problem in northern provinces and to develop short- and long-term plans to deal with it.

Split-second decision saved mother’s life at Suphan Buri fireworks plant

As Thailand and the province of Suphan Buri, just to the northwest of Bangkok, mourn the deaths of 23 people in a catastrophic firework explosion, it emerged that one fortunate woman survived. Namfon Bunkom, in a tizzy, just minutes before the explosion, hastily departed the building. Her son, who normally collected money from her, had failed to turn up and was at home instead.

500kg of explosives in storage at factory

Authorities estimate that the fireworks factory in Suphan Buri may have had at least 500 kilograms of explosive materials stored in its compound before the blast on Wednesday afternoon.

The 14.8 million tons of mineral resources discovered recently in Phang Nga province may not be entirely lithium, a rare mineral that is a key component for making batteries for electric vehicles, a government official clarified today.

“The 14.8 million tons discovered are the total amount of mineral resources and not lithium resources,” deputy government spokeswoman Radklao Inthawong Suwankiri said. “Mineral resources could contain several kinds of minerals, including lithium.” Continued …

Thailand halts poultry imports from Belgium, France

Thailand has suspended poultry imports from Belgium and three provinces of France in a bid to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The announcement by the Department of Livestock Development, published in the Royal Gazette on Thursday, will be in effect for nine days.

The move follows a World Organization for Animal Health report on the spread of HPAI in both countries. The announcement noted that the disease could spread widely due to transport of sick poultry or their carcasses, adding that it could affect Thailand’s poultry farming and people’s health. Last year was a bloody 12 months in the ongoing saga of human-elephant conflicts in Thailand, marking the sixth consecutive year of escalating incidents. Records for 2023 show a disconcerting surge in encounters and casualties due to wild elephants across the country.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), more than 13,000 incidents of wild elephant intrusion outside protected forest areas were reported during the 2023 fiscal year. All the 23 workers in a fireworks factory in Suphanburi province were killed in a deadly explosion on Wednesday afternoon, local authorities said. Police and local officials said the accident happened at 3.30pm at the factory in Ban Khoi Ngam or Moo 3 village in Tambon Sala Khao of Muang district.

Rangers in a Phetchabun wildlife sanctuary rescued a baby elephant stuck in a pool of mud and successfully returned it to its herd last week. Ronnarat Sirimakorn, chief of Phetchabun’s Tat Mok National Park, said on Wednesday that a team of rangers spotted the baby elephant stuck in a dry creek at 2pm last Thursday.

The rangers were patrolling the areas of Tat Mok Park, Nam Nao National Park and Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary in Phetchabun’s Muang district when they found the helpless calf stranded in the creek with its legs sunk into the mud. Continued …

Thailand targets 23.1 million MICE visitors in fiscal 2024

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has set a target to attract a minimum of 23.1 million meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) visitors by fiscal 2024. Through this, they aim to generate a revenue of 136 billion baht, which equates to 75% of the income recorded in 2019.

Thai air force to battle surging fine dust pollution crisis

With fine dust pollution surging to alarming levels in Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tasked the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) with spearheading the nation’s countermeasures. Air Force Chief, ACM Phanpakdee Pattanakul, confirmed the directive on Tuesday.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) revealed that the provinces of Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon are presently grappling with high levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (PM2.5). Power bills likely stable in 2024

Electricity bills in Thailand are unlikely to be trimmed from the existing rate, as the power tariff, which is used to calculate the bills, is expected to stay in a range of 4.2-4.25 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), says Khomgrich Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

A bus heading to a pier in Phuket overturned on Tuesday morning, injuring 17 Chinese tourists and three Thais, police said. The accident took place at around 8am on the outbound Thep Kasattree Road in Thalang district.
