Thailand’s oldest human skeleton found in Sam Roi Yot National Park

A pre-historic human skeleton from the Palaeolithic period, believed to be more than 29,000 years old, was recently found in a limestone cave, about 125 meters above mean sea level, in the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Sam Roi Yot district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Phanombootra Chantarachot, director-general of Fine Arts Department, and Chidchanok Sukmongkol, deputy director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, told the media that, in addition to the skeleton, several pre-historic paintings were found on the cave walls. Truck falls through damaged bridge in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Three days after warnings were issued about the condition of a bridge in Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, a truck carrying rubber wood fell through a large hole on Saturday.

Prior to the collapse, a local had posted warnings on Feb. 19 about the deteriorating state of the bridge in a Facebook group. The post alerted residents in Prachuap Khiri Khan to the risks on the elevated U-turn road on Phetkasem road, leading to the first Huakheun bridge, which had previously been rebuilt but quickly became unusable once again. Baht Poised for Dip to 35 per USD by Mid-2025

The Thai baht is predicted to weaken to around 35 per U.S. dollar by mid-2025, according to forecasts from Standard Chartered Bank (Thai). This anticipated dip is largely attributed to escalating global trade tensions, particularly between the U.S. and China.

Tim Leelahaphan, vice president and economist at the bank, highlights trade disputes among international partners as a principal factor in the baht’s expected depreciation. The prediction notes that by the second quarter of 2025, these tensions will negatively impact the baht’s strength, though the currency is anticipated to partially rebound to approximately 34.50 by the year’s end. Thousands of Foreigners Trapped at Thai-Myanmar Border After Scam Busts

Thousands of foreigners are stranded at the Thai-Myanmar border after a crackdown on scam centers operated by criminal gangs. This joint operation by authorities from China, Thailand, and Myanmar targeted illegal online operations, where victims were forced into online scams in unsanitary and often harrowing conditions.

Over recent weeks, efforts have increased to dismantle these centers along the border. Such operations are part of a wider criminal network across Southeast Asia. Continued …

Thailand’s Fiscal Position Strengthens as Revenue Exceeds Expectations

Thailand’s Finance Ministry has announced that government revenue for the first four months of the 2025 fiscal year is exceeding targets by 10.38 billion baht. A surge in value added tax (VAT) revenue from domestic spending, up 13% compared to the same period last year, is a key driver of this performance.

Pornchai Thirraveja, director of the Fiscal Policy Office and spokesperson for the Finance Ministry, confirmed that net revenue reached 826.998 billion baht between October 2024 and January 2025. This is 1.3% higher than anticipated and almost matches the revenue generated during the same period last year. Continued …

Thailand’s Auto Output Drops 24.6% as Domestic Sales Falter

Thailand, a key player in Southeast Asia’s automotive industry, has seen a sharp decline in car production, with a notable drop of 24.6% in January compared to the same period last year. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) revealed that production numbers plummeted to 107,103 units in January, primarily due to weakening domestic sales and falling exports.

As the region’s largest automotive production hub, Thailand hosts factories for prominent global manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda. The recent figures highlight an 18-month streak of consecutive production decreases. December saw a 17.8% year-on-year drop, making January’s figures particularly concerning. Continued …

Japanese Firms Eye Thailand as Production Hub Amid China Concerns

Japanese companies are considering relocating some production from China to Thailand, seeking supply chain resilience and reduced exposure to U.S. trade tensions. This comes after a successful investment mission to Japan by the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).

BOI Secretary-General Narit Therdsteerasukdi reported strong interest from Japanese businesses during the visit. He emphasized the focus on diversifying production away from China to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities and potential U.S. trade restrictions. Continued …

Thai Workforce Needs Foreign Skills: Academics Dismiss Job Fears

Recent concerns over Chinese students in Thailand potentially outcompeting Thai graduates have been played down by leading academics. They argue that rather than edging out Thai job seekers, these students help plug the skills gap and enhance economic relations.

The debate sparked after Prof. Supachai Pathumnakul from the Ministry of Higher Education shed light on Chinese investment in three Thai private universities. This led to fears about Chinese graduates competing against locals, particularly in companies requiring Chinese language proficiency. Continued …

Fear is spreading fast! Thousands of Chinese tourists are cancelling flights, ditching Thailand for safer destinations like Japan and Singapore. In January alone, flight cancellations to Thailand skyrocketed 94%, leaving airlines scrambling. Continued …

Tourism chiefs call for free visa rethink

Tourism leaders in Thailand are urging the government to revise its free-visa policy, not by scrapping it altogether, but by shortening the permitted length of stay. The call comes amid growing concerns about the behavior of some foreign visitors and the impact on local communities.

Representatives of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) and the Thai Hotels Assn. (THA) raised these concerns at their 21st annual joint meeting in Bangkok yesterday. They argued that the current 60-day free-visa allowance for 93 countries is excessive and that a 30-day limit would be more appropriate. Continued …

Is Thailand’s healthcare more affordable than in the West?

Healthcare in Thailand is known to be much more affordable than in many Western countries. Medical services, from check-ups to surgeries, can be up to 75% cheaper.

Thailand’s healthcare system includes both public and private hospitals, with modern facilities and skilled doctors alike. Because of this, Thailand attracts medical tourists due to its lower costs and reliable care, though pricing varies between facilities, and private hospitals often charge higher fees for foreigners. Pai’s Tourism Woes: Over 1,600 Foreigners Arrested in a Year

In 2022, Pai district in Mae Hong Son saw the arrest of over 1,600 foreigners, mostly for traffic and immigration violations. Among those detained, 13 were Israeli visitors for immigration infractions, according to local police reports.

Police Major Gen. Songkrit Ontakrai, Mae Hong Son’s police commander, has responded to rumors on social media about difficulties with unruly Israeli tourists. He clarified that, in total, 1,634 foreigners were arrested over the year, out of which 27 were for immigration issues. Despite claims of thousands of Israeli tourists, Pai’s capacity of 3,257 rental rooms means these numbers are overstated, the officer explained. Continued …

Thailand Faces Backlash Over Rise of Illegal Hotel Operations

Thailand’s thriving tourism industry is facing a new challenge: the surge in illegal hotel operations. Particularly in hotspots like Phuket and Bangkok, the practice of renting out residential properties as short-term lodging is raising concern.

The Thai Hotels Assn. (THA) has highlighted this issue, pointing fingers at both foreign and local investors for circumventing the Hotel Act’s regulations, which stipulate a minimum 30-day rental period for such accommodations. Continued …

White Lotus Effect Could Be a Disaster for Thailand’s Koh Samui

The Four Seasons positioning itself with The White Lotus is one of the smartest marketing partnerships in travel. It is a master class in old-school, top-of-funnel marketing, achieving something few luxury brands manage: catapulting into mainstream awareness while maintaining exclusivity.

My beef here is that much of the media coverage surrounding this phenomenon (and the launch of the new season set in Thailand) has been largely uncritical. The surge of attention is set to bring an influx of hyper-tourism to Koh Samui, a small Thai island already grappling with infrastructure challenges: namely water scarcity and issues with garbage processing. A beautiful island is in danger of being completely overloaded. Continued …

Ethics in Thailand’s elephant tourism?

An elephant experience is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist attractions; however, tourists should exercise caution and adopt ethical practices by refraining from touching the elephants when visiting elephant camps.

World Animal Protection Thailand has called on camps to stop using elephants to entertain tourists, specifically requesting that hands-on participation by tourists in bathing and feeding activities be banned. Continued …

Passing the buck on paying for emergency medical treatment in Thailand

An unfortunate British tourist Gatehouse is facing medical and repatriation costs of around 80,000 pounds (3 million baht) and much more if a private plane evacuation proves necessary. Her husband says their travel insurance proved worthless because they visited India before Thailand, a technicality that invalidated all claims.

Inevitably, the British embassy was contacted but there is no slush fund to cover non-insured tourists or expats. Indeed, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London has in the past pointed out that British taxpayers cannot, and should not, subsidize overseas tragedies no matter how pitiful. Pad Thai: A wartime invention turned global culinary icon

Pad Thai, a dish now synonymous with Thai cuisine, has a fascinating origin rooted in necessity. During World War II, Thailand faced a severe food crisis. Rice, the nation’s staple, became scarce and expensive, putting pressure on the government to find an alternative to sustain its people.

This led to a creative solution by then-prime minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, introducing a new national dish that would reduce rice consumption while fostering a sense of unity among Thais. That dish was Pad Thai. Continued …

Koh Mak: The tiny island that’s redefining travel to Thailand

As season three of The White Lotus prepares to thrust Thailand’s islands into the global spotlight, drawing fresh waves of visitors to the already bustling shores of Phuket and Koh Samui, a very different story is unfolding across the Gulf of Thailand. Here, a speck of an island named Koh Mak has quietly positioned itself as a model for sustainable tourism, offering a rare vision of what the future of travel in Thailand could be.

Heading toward Koh Mak’s southern shores by speedboat, my first impression was disarmingly simple: golden sand curving into clear shallows while coconut palms leaned toward the sea as though caught mid-bow. There were no high-rises, no blaring beach clubs. Instead, low-slung bungalows peeked through the trees and bicycles outnumbered cars on the island’s quiet roads. Continued …

Thailand: A Surfer’s secret stash of hidden waves

While it might not boast the legendary waves of Hawaii or Bali, Thailand has plenty to offer, especially for those just starting out or looking for a relaxed surf trip.

The best time to catch some waves depends on which coast you’re hitting. The Andaman Sea side, home to Phuket and Khao Lak, gets its best swells from May to October, thanks to the southwest monsoon. Over on the Gulf of Thailand, around Hua Hin and Rayong, the waves are smaller but still fun from October to December. Continued …

EGAT tasked with studying small modular nuclear reactors

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has been told to accelerate the study of nuclear power plants using small modular reactors (SMRs) to boost Thailand’s energy security. A source from the Energy Ministry said laws and regulations should be implemented to supervise private companies’ investment in SMRs in order to ensure safety.

The most difficult part, however, is creating an understanding with the public sector, a source said, adding that Thailand would look at setting up national nuclear power plants before allowing private investment. Continued …

The effects of Trump’s Ukraine deal

At the end of World War I, John Maynard Keynes was part of the British delegation to the Paris Peace Conference, where the victorious Allies dictated the peace terms for the defeated Central Powers. He emerged from the conference distraught. As he subsequently wrote in The Economic Consequences of the Peace, delegates’ focus on short-term political considerations, including the desire to “punish” Germany for its aggression, would come at the cost of long-term social and political stability in Europe. It is a warning worth remembering today. Continued …

Immigration Biometric System Fails to Record Data for 17 Million Travelers

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has admitted to lapses in its biometric system, affecting the tracking of about 17 million travelers last year. According to opposition MP Rangsiman Rome, the system’s capacity was maxed out, halting biometric data collection and posing security risks by potentially allowing criminals to re-enter undetected.

Rangsiman, chairing the House Committee on National Security, revealed that since the licensing for the system expired, the Bureau has only been capturing facial images and fingerprints, not true biometric data. He warns it could take up to 29 months to reinstate a functioning system, with procurement yet to commence. Continued …

The proposal sought to decrease electricity costs by 0.17 baht per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from the current 4.15 baht per unit.

Under pressure from the Pheu Thai-led government, efforts have been underway to lower power prices below 4 baht per unit to alleviate financial strain on consumers and businesses. Continued …

Lifting Alcohol Restrictions Could Boost Thai Economy by Billions

Easing Thailand’s existing restrictions on afternoon alcohol sales could inject an additional 50-100 billion baht into the economy, predominantly through increased spending by foreign tourists, experts in the industry suggest.

Recent findings hint that so-called “high-quality” tourists are prepared to pay an extra $250 (approximately 8,400 baht) daily for premium food and beverage experiences. Anchalee Poomsirkaew, director of the Asia-Pacific International Spirits and Wines Assn., said that relaxing four specific alcohol sale restrictions could maximize revenue impacts, potentially unlocking the full 100 billion baht. Cabinet Set to Reject Casino Entry Rule for Thai Nationals

Thai Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has indicated that a contentious proposal regulating casino entry for Thai citizens is unlikely to win cabinet approval. The policy, suggested by the Council of State (CoS), requires Thais to maintain a minimum of 50 million baht (approximately US$ 1.5 million) in fixed deposits for at least six months to gain entry to casino entertainment complexes.

Anutin, who also holds the position of deputy prime minister and leads the Bhumjaithai Party, expressed skepticism over the proposal’s feasibility. He reassured that as a coalition partner, Bhumjaithai remains committed to supporting government policies, provided they don’t negatively impact society. Continued …

“While we forecast rice production in Thailand to increase by 0.5% year-on-year from 20 million tons in 2023-24 to 20.1 million in 2024-25, we also expect that exports will post a decrease in the coming season,” BMI said. Continued …

Thailand’s biometric system overloaded with 50 million records

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has hit a critical roadblock, with its biometric system reaching its maximum capacity of 50 million records, preventing new foreign arrivals from being automatically recorded. The bureau is now forced to manually document arrivals and rely on an online database for security checks until a new system is developed.

Pattaya Bars Empty Amid Low Season and Shifting Tourism Trends

Pattaya’s tourism dynamics have shifted significantly, transforming the city that was once bustling with Western tourists into a hub primarily frequented by Asian visitors. This change has led to bars that were once thriving during the traditional high season now finding themselves empty.

Historically, Pattaya attracted a surge of European and North American tourists during the winter months, who filled bars, hotels, and nightlife venues. Unlocking Solar Potential: Thailand’s Regulatory Shift on Rooftop Solar Systems

Thailand is taking a step forward in accelerating its renewable energy transition. A recent amendment by the Ministry of Industry to the Factory Act eliminated the requirement for a factory license for rooftop solar installations with capacities exceeding 1 MW. This regulatory change presents new opportunities for businesses, industry and the solar sector, while supporting the nation’s sustainability goals.

Under the previous regulation, rooftop solar systems exceeding 1 MW required a factory license. This process was often time-consuming, bureaucratically complex and financially burdensome. By removing this requirement, the Ministry of Industry has effectively lowered the barriers for businesses to adopt large-scale rooftop solar systems. Continued …

Amid Climate Uncertainty, Floating Solar Builds Resilience

Southeast Asia is responsible for nearly a quarter of global energy demand growth through 2035, but it is currently heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels and hydropower. Given recent volatility in both fossil fuel prices and increasing severity and regularity of heatwaves and droughts, which make hydropower less reliable, diversification into domestically located renewable energy sources like solar will have energy security benefits.

This is particularly true for countries like Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, which have significant existing hydropower in their power supply and also significant untapped solar potential. Floating solar (FPV) is a low-cost way to quickly diversify the power mix in ways that complement existing hydropower, support water conservation efforts at existing dams, and reduce the need for expensive new dams, which have negative social and environmental impacts. Bangkok Bank sends expat customers financial requests

From Expat Tax Thailand

Last year, Kasikorn Bank (KBank) began issuing emails requesting compliance information under the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) and FATCA (for U.S. citizens). Now, some expat clients of Bangkok Bank have received similar requests. Example here.

This is a standard procedure, in line with Thailand’s commitment to global tax transparency regulations. This comprehensive resource: Thai Banks CRS/FATCA Compliance can help navigate this. This article includes a detailed video explanation, step-by-step guidance on completing the forms, and answers to common questions.

Bangkok Bank is complying with CRS and FATCA regulations:
  • For Americans: FATCA requires banks to report account details to U.S. tax authorities.
  • For non-Americans: CRS ensures tax residency information is shared with international tax authorities to prevent tax evasion.

This is not unique to you or your bank — all Thai banks are required to implement these measures following Thailand’s adoption of the CRS agreement in 2020.

Under CRS rules, banks must:
  • Confirm the tax residency of all account holders.
  • Identify any connections to other countries for tax purposes.
  • Share financial account details with local tax authorities, who may exchange this information internationally if needed.

This ensures overseas income and assets are properly declared. While this may feel new in Thailand, it’s a standard practice globally. Switching banks won’t avoid these requests, as compliance is mandatory across all Thai financial institutions.

What Should You Do?
  • Stay calm — there’s no immediate rush.
  • Check your request for the specific deadline.
  • The advice from Bangkok Bank is to complete the form and take it to your local branch.
  • You can direct questions to Bangkok Bank’s helpline 1333 (Extension 2 for English).
  • Refer to our guidance: Visit this article for detailed instructions and a helpful video.

Is it time to pack and leave Pattaya?

Pattaya has always been a city of extremes — vibrant yet chaotic, affordable yet increasingly expensive, exciting yet sometimes overwhelming. As the low season approaches, many long-term residents and tourists are asking themselves: is it time to pack up and leave, or should they ride it out until conditions improve?

There’s no denying that Pattaya has seen better days. Many feel that it’s going downhill fast, with increasing crime, economic struggles, and a changing tourism demographic. Some argue that Phuket isn’t much better, as the type of tourists coming to Thailand nowadays are often perceived as low-spending, disruptive, and inconsiderate. But in truth, there are problems everywhere — nowhere is perfect. Continued …

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced ambitious economic targets for the coming year, revealing plans to accelerate investments in emerging technological sectors, while confirming stronger-than-expected recovery figures.

Speaking at the “Matichon Leadership Forum 2025” on Tuesday, the PM confirmed that Thailand’s GDP grew by 2.5% in 2024, exceeding the government’s initial 2% target. The PM attributed this growth to successful domestic consumption stimulus packages and a significant tourism recovery following the implementation of visa-free entry schemes for key markets. Thailand bows to US tariff threat: Feed mills eye $2.8 billion in imports

Thailand’s animal feed industry is pitching to buy about $2.8 billion worth of agricultural commodities annually from the United States instead of other suppliers, as the country seeks to narrow its $35-billion trade surplus and head off possible tariffs on its exports.

Thailand’s Flu Outbreak Resulting in Tourism Concerns

Thailand had been experiencing a sharp rise in influenza infections, with 107,570 reported cases and nine fatalities this year as of Feb. 18, according to the Public Health Ministry. The surge in flu cases had raised concerns among both domestic and international travelers, leading to speculation about whether tourists would reconsider or alter their plans to visit the country.

Thai Tourism Sector Shaken by US Tariffs and Market Uncertainty

The Thai tourism industry is currently navigating choppy waters as it faces potential disruptions from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and shifting global markets. Airlines and hoteliers are on high alert, with fuel prices and an unpredictable Chinese tourism influx being pivotal concerns in a landscape marked by economic challenges.

Recently imposed U.S. tariffs are anticipated to affect global oil prices, a critical element for the travel sector, especially airlines. Tassapon Bijleveld, executive chairman of Asia Aviation, which holds the majority stake in Thai AirAsia, stressed that while low fuel prices currently advantage airlines, fluctuations tied to trade policies could upend this benefit. Instant White Lotus Effect: Koh Samui interest surges after popular TV show

Thailand is enjoying the global spotlight following the season premiere of the popular HBO show “The White Lotus”. For the island of Koh Samui, in particular, the series’ main shooting location, Agoda noted a 12% increase in accommodation searches.

Interest from the United States grew by 65% compared to last month’s average. The search increase from the United States sees the market enter Koh Samui’s inbound top five based on accommodation searches made on Agoda. What a more sustainable tourism industry could look like

This weekend, the much-anticipated third season of the HBO show “White Lotus” dropped its first episode. The show famously shows a dark side of tourism, illustrating the class divides between wealthy Westerners who travel to high-end resorts oozing with entitlement and the locals whose livelihoods depend on catering to their needs.

Even without the boost of the show, tourism to Koh Samui — Thailand’s second-largest island and a popular travel destination — has been in conflict with the island’s natural beauty. The local population of 70,000 is dwarfed by annual visitors in the millions, and the sheer volume of visitors means that local water resources are constrained, waste management is a growing problem, and construction has damaged the nearby reef and other ecosystems. New Casino Rules May Bar Thais Without $1.5M Fixed Deposits

Thailand is eyeing ambitious advancements in its tourism sector by proposing a multi-faceted gaming industry centered around new casino laws. However, these regulations have sparked discussions, given their stringent conditions for Thai locals wishing to enter casinos.

According to a draft released by the Office of the Council of State, Thai nationals must maintain fixed deposits totaling 50 million baht (approximately $1.5 million) for at least six months to gain entry to these casinos. Additionally, an entry fee, capped at 5,000 baht, will be imposed. These regulations are part of a broader initiative to stimulate tourism, a primary income source for Thailand, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. Continued …

Mercedes-Benz anticipates another gloomy Thai sales year

German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) expects another tough year for the Thai car market, caused by difficulties for consumers in accessing car loans, as well as high interest rates, which led to a 23% decrease in newly registered premium cars last year.

The total number of registrations stood at 33,472 units. Mercedes-Benz also saw a 30% year-on-year drop in its car sales in Thailand in 2024 to 9,189 vehicles in 2024, the lowest level recorded in three years. Continued …

‘Rose-colored glasses’: The stressful reality of being a digital nomad

Working from a tropical paradise, taking calls with an ocean view, and then unwinding at the beach afterward sounds idyllic. But the day-to-day reality of the digital nomad life can be far more chaotic than what’s shown on social media.

When Deryn Russell and her partner were working remotely in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, enjoying the sunshine and surf, things started to go downhill. Their Starlink router refused to connect properly when Russell needed to log onto a video call for work and forced her partner, a video editor, to take the week off of work. Adding insult to injury, he also dealt with a bad bout of food poisoning and their laundry service lost all their clothes. Continued …

What it’s like to sail Thailand’s wild Andaman Coast onboard a catamaran

I didn’t anticipate starting the day by accidentally slapping a jellyfish. Yet it’s hard to maintain a personal sense of space underwater when surrounded by dozens of these pastel-pink, deceptively ethereal creatures.

As they pulse and undulate around me in the serene waters of the Andaman Sea, my unintended victim floats away, seemingly unfazed — but that brush sends my limbs into uncontrollable panic, like branches buffeted by a hurricane. Continued …

Thai Beachfront Resorts Featured in White Lotus — Here’s What They’re Really Like

For everyone who watched the premiere of hite Lotus and is now planning a Thailand vacation — albeit one without the drama — staying at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is an obvious choice. The first season of White Lotus filmed at the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea in Hawaii; the second season shot at San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel in Sicily. The spike in tourism to both destinations (and hotels) even became known as “The White Lotus effect.”

But as a devoted fan of the show and repeat visitor to Thailand, I instead chose to start my White Lotus tour at Anantara BoPhut Koh Samui, because it’s the first hotel I spotted in the new season’s trailer. During my White Lotus-inspired trip, I stayed at three resorts where the new season filmed: Anantara BoPhut Koh Samui, Anantara Lawana Koh Samui, and Anantara Mai Khao Phuket. Continued …

Wealthy Bangkokers consider this their weekend country getaway, since it’s home to Thailand’s first national park, the UNESCO-listed Khao Yai National Park, as well as bucolic fields, farms, and wineries that are championing the notion of “tropical wine.” Continued …

My Harrowing Gym Experience in Hua Hin

I’ve joined an exclusive gym here in my new hometown of Hua Hin, a fitness mecca where only the rich and astute, like myself, may enter. This is where I’ll get back in shape, turn my life around, reinvent myself, and most importantly meet a proper woman.

Mrs. Smith is out of the picture now. She got too fat while I was away to even try and plonk her anymore, so I gave her 6 million baht, cash, and sent her on her way. No more tatted bar prozzies, maybe just on special occasions. From now on, it’s only classy, self-made Thai ladies with abs and Platinum Amex cards for Bob. Or so I thought. Continued …

Foreigners Face New Hurdles in Opening Thai Bank Accounts

Foreign nationals in Thailand are encountering increased difficulties when trying to open bank accounts, following a new crackdown aimed at combating financial crime. This development is part of a broader initiative by the Thai government, led by the Bank of Thailand, targeting mule accounts linked to fraud and money-laundering activities.

Starting today, even foreigners applying for bank accounts required for visas, such as the Destination Thailand Visa or the non-immigrant “O” retirement permit, face potential challenges. Popular agencies in places like Jomtien have announced they can no longer assist foreigners in opening accounts until the situation stabilizes. Continued …

Relaxation of Alcohol Sale: To Do or Not To Do?

Last week’s government-proposed lifting of the bans on alcohol sale on Buddhist holidays and from 2pm to 5pm in a bid to further boost tourism revenue, and to be in line with this year’s tourism theme, “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year”, have raised concerns among religious people, as well as health-conscious anti-alcohol campaigners.

There are concerns that more Thais, particularly young people, would become alcoholic, that there will be more alcoholics, higher medical costs, road accidents and that it is something that is not approved in religious teachings, particularly in Buddhism and Islam. Continued …

Food Is Medicine — Health Innovation for Modern People

Food is the foundation of good health, yet in today’s world, many people find themselves “taking medicine as food” rather than using food as a natural means to maintain well-being.

“Today, the global population is experiencing significant health challenges due to fast-paced lifestyles, improper dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and high levels of stress. These factors have contributed to a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease, kidney disease, and cancer,” said Associate Professor Dr. Kitipong Assatarakul, head of the Department of Food Technology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University. Citing the 2023 World Health Organization (WHO) report, he highlighted that an estimated 41 million people worldwide succumb to NCDs each year. Continued …

Industry restructuring is a key engine for driving the country’s economy, particularly in boosting the national GDP. For this reason, the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) is advancing measures to restructure nine target industries as part of the policy “Industrial Reform for a Modern, Clean, Convenient, and Transparent Economy”, aiming to increase gross domestic product by at least 1%.

Gauging an elusive growth target

With the first month of 2025 passed, the economy still faces uncertainty and unclear growth drivers. The government set an ambitious target, aiming to increase GDP growth to a range of 3%-3.5% this year, banking on tourism, foreign investment and state stimulus measures.

Yet, many industries are sceptical about this goal as tourism slows with the low season approaching. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has not reached anticipated levels, while the government’s 10,000-baht cash handout was widely criticized by analysts as a feeble attempt to generate economic momentum. ASEAN, in disarray, needs to recalibrate

Since its inception in 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has represented a story of success in regional cooperation among developing countries. Its founding nations of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand chose to support the free world and oppose communism, refuted the domino theory of communism’s spread and positioned the region to emerge from the Cold War era intact, enriched and self-confident.

Upon the completion of ASEAN’s long-held aspiration to encompass all 10 nation states within the region in the 1990s, former ideological enemies reconciled and became integral parts of the ASEAN family. ASEAN, as an association, became a community based upon a common set of ideas and rules, as demonstrated by the ASEAN Charter, which came into full effect and force in 2008. Continued …
