Thai population on course to drop by half in 60 years

Michelin plans to invest 300 million euros in Thailand

The government said on Friday French tire maker Michelin planned to invest 300 million euros (11.63 billion baht) in Thailand over the next three years to increase production capacity.

Michelin has already invested more than €1 billion in Thailand with five plants and 8,000 workers, the government said in a statement issued during Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to France, where he met with company executives. Continued …

When the lights dimmed on the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand awards in Bangkok on Dec. 13, history had been made. Chudaree Debhakam of Baan Tepa had become the first Thai female chef to lead a two-Michelin-star restaurant and Garima Arora the first female Indian chef to clinch two stars for her dining room Gaa.

Both women are very much in the minority, not just within Bangkok’s culinary community but in the international food world. Rama II Road upgrades will be completed in 2025, government says

There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

The Department of Highways (DOH) and the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) recently moved to address some of the challenges brought about by the extensive construction work on the road, which is one of the main routes to Cha Am and Hua Hin. Continued …

January’s economic data shows Thailand on track for recovery

Thailand’s economic figures in January showed signs of recovery, with a rebound evident in tourism, consumption and exports, though private investments have slowed down, the Fiscal Policy Office said.

Pornchai Theeravet, FPO director-general, said on Wednesday that several economic figures, especially exports that expanded for six consecutive months, showed signs of improvement for the country. Consumer confidence hits 47-month high

Consumer confidence rose in January to the highest level in 47 months, propped up by the economic recovery, says Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) Director-general Pornchai Thiraveja.

Airports of Thailand (AOT) and Immigration Division 2 are joining hands to tackle a pressing issue at Suvarnabhumi Airport: inordinately long passenger queues. The urgency to address this problem was triggered by the concerns raised by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin about the prolonged processing times at the airport.

While flood risk is projected to intensify globally, the main driver of major weather-related economic losses in Southeast Asia, are tropical cyclones, according to data from the Swiss Re Institute.

These are just the lower bound of potential economic losses, as the study does not cover all weather perils (e.g., heatwaves) and account for property losses only. Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Data from the Royal Forest Department indicates that the kingdom had a total forest area of 162,909 sq.km. in 2023, a figure that has gradually dropped in recent years. Continued …

First 4 weeks of January sees 28% higher foreign arrivals

Thailand has welcomed over 2.7 million overseas visitors from Jan. 1-28, a 27.8% jump compared to Jan. 1-31 last year, government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said on Friday.

Unsafe dust levels in 51 provinces

Fifty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with hazardous levels of ultra-fine dust on Monday morning, most of them in the central plains, the north and the northeast.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said five central plains provinces were blanketed by red (seriously hazardous) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Continued …

Public advised to use N95 mask as PM2.5 in Bangkok at unsafe levels

The public has been advised to wear N95 masks whenever they go outside on Sunday as air pollution in Bangkok remains high, with PM2.5 levels reaching unhealthy levels.

As of 10am on Sunday, the air quality index (AQI) in Bangkok was 187, which is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”. The AQI for PM2.5, which are fine particulates that can penetrate deep into the lungs, is 118. Continued …

PM to submit dust control plan to court

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday that he will submit a plan to solve the PM2.5 fine dust problem as ordered by the Chiang Mai Administrative Court within 90 days.

He said the court requires him and the national environment panel to draft a plan in 90 days following a complaint filed by a network of people in the north. Officials will be invited to discuss the matter and draft the plan as ordered by the court, he said. Continued …

A new blast of cold air is set to lower temperatures by four degrees Celsius, warns the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD). This weather shift, prompted by a strong high-pressure system from southern China and northern Vietnam, is anticipated to affect the northeastern and eastern parts of Thailand today.

The cold weather and strong winds in the northeast are expected to result in a drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius, while the eastern region will experience a 1-3 degrees Celsius decrease. Thailand produces 9.7 million tons of food waste per year, or 146 kilograms for each resident, says Pollution Control Department Director-general Preeyaporn Suwanaged.

New tiger discovery in Chumphon province

Three tigers, believed to traverse between Thailand and Myanmar, have been discovered in Chumphon province’s forests. The big cats were detected last Friday in the Tanao Sri Mountain Range, which forms the border between the two countries.

The tigers are suspected of patrolling the forests of Duang Charoen, Nern Thong, and Chong Kamew in the Ta Sae district’s Song Pee Noing subdistrict. Wild gaurs in rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima

Tourism business operators from Wang Nam Khieo district in Nakhon Ratchasima have put forward initiatives to tackle the escalating number of incidents involving wild gaurs. These large, wild bulls are causing havoc, attacking individuals, and wreaking destruction on crops.

The most recent incident occurred on Jan. 11 when a mother and her seven-year-old daughter were assaulted by a rogue gaur while they were traveling on a motorbike along Highway No. 3052, connecting Wang Nam Khieo and Pak Chong district. The gaur charged at the motorbike, causing it to skid across the road. The young girl was caught in the gaur’s horns and was carried off into the nearby forest as the animal dashed off the road. Court orders government to form urgent plan to address PM2.5

The Administrative Court in Chiang Mai yesterday ordered Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the National Environment Board to draw up an emergency plan within 90 days to deal with the PM2.5 pollution problem in northern provinces and to develop short- and long-term plans to deal with it.

The court’s ruling marks a rare victory for civil society in the northern region, putting pressure on the government to take concrete action to deal with PM2.5 pollution, which has been a threat to the health of people in the region for many years. Continued …

Split-second decision saved mother’s life at Suphan Buri fireworks plant

As Thailand and the province of Suphan Buri, just to the northwest of Bangkok, mourn the deaths of 23 people in a catastrophic firework explosion, it emerged that one fortunate woman survived. Namfon Bunkom, in a tizzy, just minutes before the explosion, hastily departed the building. Her son, who normally collected money from her, had failed to turn up and was at home instead.

Namfon’s flustered decision, a near-run thing because of her commitment to work, saved her life. However, any joy or relief for the Thai woman was subdued. Afterwards, she confirmed that her mother and many of the people she knew had perished. Continued … 

500kg of explosives in storage at factory

Authorities estimate that the fireworks factory in Suphan Buri may have had at least 500 kilograms of explosive materials stored in its compound before the blast on Wednesday afternoon.

The explosion occurred at village Moo 3 in tambon Salakhao of Muang district at about 3.30pm, killing 23 workers instantly. The explosion also caused damage to four houses located about 300 meters from the factory. Continued …

The new cannabis control bill is a face-saving move in response to a public perception that marijuana usage has spiraled out of control, according to cannabis right activist and entrepreneur Chokwan Kitty Chopaka.

The bill, which envisages a 60,000 baht fine for recreational smoking inside one’s residence, as well as prison sentences and fines upward of 500,000 baht for other offenses, is “a knee jerk reaction to the general belief that there are no current rules controlling cannabis,” Chokwan said. Ministry continues to monitor product prices

The Commerce Ministry is keeping a close watch on prices in 18 categories in the first quarter, with costs nudging up for animal feed raw materials, the minimum wage is adjusted, and transport costs rise as a result of the Red Sea attacks.

According to Wattanasak Sur-iam, director-general of the Internal Trade Department, the 18 categories being monitored are: instant noodles; fresh food; canned food; bagged rice; seasoning sauce; vegetable oil; carbonated drinks; milk and dairy products; electrical appliances; laundry products; fertilizers; insecticides; pet food; iron; cement; paper; medicine and medical services, and services through retail and wholesale channels. Govt clarifies on lithium discovery after experts debunk claims

The 14.8 million tons of mineral resources discovered recently in Phang Nga province may not be entirely lithium, a rare mineral that is a key component for making batteries for electric vehicles, a government official clarified today.

“The 14.8 million tons discovered are the total amount of mineral resources and not lithium resources,” deputy government spokeswoman Radklao Inthawong Suwankiri said. “Mineral resources could contain several kinds of minerals, including lithium.” Continued …

Thailand halts poultry imports from Belgium, France

Thailand has suspended poultry imports from Belgium and three provinces of France in a bid to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The announcement by the Department of Livestock Development, published in the Royal Gazette on Thursday, will be in effect for nine days.

The move follows a World Organization for Animal Health report on the spread of HPAI in both countries. The announcement noted that the disease could spread widely due to transport of sick poultry or their carcasses, adding that it could affect Thailand’s poultry farming and people’s health. Experts urge policy rethink as elephant population boom sparks escalating conflicts

Last year was a bloody 12 months in the ongoing saga of human-elephant conflicts in Thailand, marking the sixth consecutive year of escalating incidents. Records for 2023 show a disconcerting surge in encounters and casualties due to wild elephants across the country.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), more than 13,000 incidents of wild elephant intrusion outside protected forest areas were reported during the 2023 fiscal year. Air pollution worsens in Hua Hin

Like many locations in Thailand, Hua Hin has seen a significant rise in air pollution, as levels of PM 2.5, the fine particulate matter known for its adverse health effects, have reached concerning levels over the last 24 hours.

On Monday, the air quality index recorded a PM 2.5 concentration of 42.3, surpassing the standard safe limit of 37.5. This increase in pollution levels is beginning to have tangible impacts on public health. Continued …

Old and sick brutally abused tigers in condemned Asian breeding horror

We have just helped rescue 15 elderly and sick tigers and leopards from a condemned breeding mill in Thailand and likely helped save them from death. But there are up to 15 critically endangered Indo-Chinese leopards and sick and elderly tigers that still need rescue right now or face life in a zoo (if they survive). These are wild creatures who have lived chained and beaten their entire lives.

Last year, we told you that a horror big-cat breeding facility in Thailand had been shut down, and its resident cats were in urgent need of relocation to our partner sanctuary. We were there in December when the first 15 rescued big cats arrived at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). Thai data privacy watchdog uncovers massive breach involving over 5,000 organizations

Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) recently uncovered a significant privacy breach involving 5,261 organizations. Among these, a majority of 4,886 were government agencies from both central and local sectors. The lapse in data protection was observed between Nov. 9 of the previous year and Jan. 12.

The violations were primarily due to excessively revealing personal data on various websites and a noticeable absence of necessary security measures to safeguard this private information. Concert and music performance are the most popular Children’s Day activities, while top music artists are the individuals Thai youths are most interested to meet in person, according to a poll jointly conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Suan Dusit Poll. In Thailand, Children’s Day is observed on the second Saturday of January, which falls on Jan. 13 this year.

The Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for hosting Children’s Day activities nationwide, collaborated with Suan Dusit Poll to survey public opinion about Children’s Day this year. A total of 21,627 children nationwide — 58.6% males and 41.4% females — participated in the survey. Continued …

Thailand’s escalating smog crisis: Choking smog in 55 provinces

People in 55 of the 77 provinces were breathing dirty air this morning, with red-coded pollution levels in 20 provinces, mainly in the Central Plains.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 38.7 to 113.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers. A Ukrainian man drowned near Bailan Beach on the island of Koh Chang in the eastern province of Trat. He reportedly tried to swim from Koh Chang to Koh Man Nai after an argument with his family.

Foreigner Filmed Urinating Off the Back of TukTuk in Phuket

A video clip of a foreign man who was standing and urinating on the back of a tuk tuk in Patong has gone viral on social media this week, causing outrage and anger from many Thai social media users who demanded the foreigner be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.

In Thailand, it’s very easy to encounter an elephant. Some sites allow quiet observation, as you admire the massive animals from afar. Other tourist venues offer activities like feeding, riding, or bathing with elephants. Many places toss around the term “ethical” when describing the encounters, but they often are not the sanctuaries they promote.

(Editor note: Expat News visited the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, and we have to dispute one warning about not physically interacting with the elephants. Unlike some “sanctuaries”, where the elephants are basically penned in – or chained or caged, pachyderms at Elephant Nature Park mostly are allowed to roam free in the mountainous jungles of the park and visitors are allowed to mingle with them for bathing, feeding and walks. These are rescued elephants and their young, and as long as there is no riding of the elephants, we see no problem with this activity.)

190 Killed In New Year Holiday Road Accidents So Far

With four days of New Year holidays having now passed, as many as 190 people have been killed in 1,570 accidents nationwide, while 1,574 were injured, and it was Kanchanaburi where the highest number of accidents occurred, while Bangkok recorded the most fatalities.

Covid-19 cases reach nearly 6,000 a day

The number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand has been on the rise in recent weeks, reaching nearly 6,000 cases per day on Jan. 2, the highest reported caseload since August 2023.
